Summary: Large Disappointment
Review: Have upgraded everytime a new version came out. Unfortunately this version is a waste of time. Many functions are done differently then previous versions; the changes are not intuitive at all. Takes 2 - 5 times longer to do the same things. The only thing keeping me from trying MS Money is that my entire retirement plan is with this software.

Summary: Waste of time and Money--no support
Review: Quicken 2003 is a ...software package, not up to contemporary professional standards. I have been running it with W2k for 2 months with some off and on annoying problems, however, now my the program will not read my data file or my backups. Intuit will talk to you...for a fee...or restore the data that their lousy product fouled .... Do not waste your time. Do not waste your money. Another great annoyance is the commercialism in the software, constantly pitching Quicken credit cards, brokerage, tax products, etc. Avoid this product at all costs.

Summary: Beware of positive reviews
Review: Beware of people saying that the negative reviews are mostly submitted by people who have not used the product. PC WORLD and PC MAGAZINE both reviewd this product and both gave very negative reviews. Quicken was trounced by MS Money. It is not just not just disgruntled users bad rapping this product. Quicken has been slipping for several years now.

Summary: Doesn't download from even big institutions, has bugs.
Review: It failed to download from American Express, Ameritrade, and other credit cards. When it was able to download from NetBank it was hard to use because it added items from last year and was difficult to edit. Then, even after re-installing it 4 times, I was still unable to register it. I have uninstalled it and am selling it. If you want my copy, go to Ebay.

Summary: I'm in tears!
Review: I started with Quicken version 1.0 and was delighted. Each upgrade was like going to the candy store to see what great features were added. The last great version of Quicken was 6.0. Since then, each upgrade has been a disappointment. There are memory leaks that prevent using the product for over 8 hours on my computer before hanging and having to reboot (Quicken99). I was thinking of upgrading to Quicken2003, but after reading the reviews, I am at a loss. I think I'll just go back to Version 6.0 and be happy again!

Old versions had no advertising.

Summary: Don't take reviews strictly at face value...
Review: I've been a Quicken user for over four years, starting with Quicken 98, then Quicken 2000. Recently I decided to upgrade so I researched Quicken 2003 & Money 2003. I also evaluated Money just to see the competition and get a more thorough view of what's available. I was amazed to find several negative reviews of Quicken 2003 here but even more amazed that many of these reviewers never purchased or used the product. Just a little free advice; ignore reviews of a product from people who have never used it! It's completely asinine to read a negative review on a product and then write another negative review encouraging others to avoid the product without any first-hand experience.

As I said, I upgraded from Quicken 2000 to Quicken 2003 and I couldn't have asked for an easier process. The installation was flawless and the conversion of my data file equally flawless. Within minutes I was up and running, using all my old saved reports as well as entering new transactions without issue. The new interface took about fifteen minutes to master and it looks great. Everything is organized logically and MUCH easier to use than Money. Money is cluttered, less intuitive, and a little slow. Don't get me wrong, Money isn't a bad product on its own, but it just doesn't stand up to Quicken.

Many reviewers complained of rampant ads running amok within Quicken 2003; I found this to be untrue. There were really no more ads in this version than there were in 2000 with the exception of a few small buttons offering extended services offered by Quicken. Anything I saw was unobtrusive and basically unnoticeable. The complaints, I believe, are overblown. There were also complaints of Quicken converting the data file so one cannot revert to a previous version. This claim is untrue as well; the setup program creates a back up copy explicitly for reverting to a previous version. Regardless one should be smart enough to back up one's important financial data before making a major software upgrade!

Intuit offers a 60 day money back guarantee with Quicken 2003 so it should be, in theory, risk-free. I recommend this version as I have others and am glad I decided to upgrade.

Summary: What a letdown
Review: What a total letdown. I think I was dazzeled by all the rebates offered by buying Quicken '03 & TurboTax. I upgraded from Quicken 2000 & here's what I got:

1. Pity-ful import of previous quicken records. Things lost: my 401k (the whole thing- *poof* gone), paycheck, links between recurring items (house, car) and their respective accounts.

2. Incessant advertising. Used to just be on the bottom status bar of the application, now it's everywhere I turn- Quicken Mastercard, Quicken Brokerage, Quicken who-knows-how-many different lines of credit.... Blah!

3. List of Scheduled Transactions now includes any-and-everybody I ever 'memorized'. This is real neat, say I rented a movie at MovieBuster about every two weeks, now there's a reminder that I need to pay MovieBuster [money] in two weeks. How smart!! I had to answer 'NO' to about 600 of these. Even said I had an overdue transaction at JiffyLube, hilighted in red of course.

4. No printed documentation. Only wonderful money-saving offers from Quicken. Installation instructions come on a 5" x 7" piece of paper telling me auto-run should do everything, brief 3 question FAQ on the back. Oh, did I mention an expired (Nov '02) mail-in rebate form?

Based on reviews I've read, Quicken seemed to be a better product than MS Money. After having used Quicken for half a day now, MS Money must be an absolutely horrible product. I can't imagine how people think it's any worse..

I'm still digging into this application, think I'm going to wind up starting over with all of this import mess so far. Save your dime on Quicken '03, get a pen & calculator..

UPDATE (about two weeks of use): Still a letdown.

1. I just last night realized that most of my scheduled transactions (local phone bill, gym dues, student loan) were being deposited in my checking account. Spent an hour or so fixing the scheduled transactions alone, not to mention my checkbook register which now mysteriously had entries for these transactions thru June.

2. I have re-established my 401k account- what a mess. I only have the last 18 mos. of transactions online and haven't yet gotten close to the balance in my portfolio. However, knight in shining armour Quicken rushes to my rescue asking me if I want to enter some radical balancing transactions after both of the online updates I've done so far.

3. Paycheck is a headache. After ignoring this while clearing up other messes, I had to figure out why my checking account balance appeared so high. Quicken didn't match ACH DEP - XXX Co. from my bank to XXX Co. in my register. Took the liberty of marking the transactions as 'NEW' and I absent mindedly hit 'ACCEPT ALL' as I always have.

Summary: The messed up a good product
Review: Intuit took a great product and ruined it. There are so many ways to set up the screen that you can't find anything or do anything without searching through menus to see where it is. It is not intuitive at all. I've used this product (and Quickbooks) for years, so I'm familiar with the program. Now I get lost. Besides the unpleasant design of the software, it's also buggy. If I try to switch to VIEW 1, it crashes. I use Windows 2000 for stability, and very few programs crash. This one is an exception. Stay away from this software until they fix the interface and stabilize the bugs.

Summary: Yuk.
Review: I've been using Quicken since DOS days, and it seems each upgrade made things worse. I ran Quicken 2003 for about a week and then uninstalled it and went back to Quicken 2002. They've finally reached the end of the line for me. From now on, I'll be watching for something from a different vendor or perhaps from the open source community.
The 2003 version is wired with lots of commericals and tie-ins, plus the screen is full of useless ... that makes it more difficult to see the journals. When you've got a problem, you might as well try contacting the man on the moon.
As far as I can tell, "upgrade" to the folks at Quicken means to add some tail-fins and call it "improved". Well, I'm mad as ... and I'm not gonna take it any longer.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Quicken 2003 no longer has billboards
Review: I read that Quicken recently removed their ads from the product - I just bought the 2003 version and it's true, the ads are no longer there! They replaced them with financial tips and links to features - some of which I didn't even realize were in the product.
I upgrade almost every year and this is a welcome change - those ads were a little distracting.
