Summary: Seems like a solid program - no bugs as others reporting
Review: I've been a user of Quicken 2001 and this year decided to upgrade. After reading all of the negative reviews on here, I decided to first try MSN Money 2004. It works great, but I wasn't as comfortable with the way things are presented, so decided to also try Quicken 2004 Deluxe. Here are a few thoughts on the two programs:

1. Presentation-wise, I like Quicken better. On the view pages, boxes are lined up with each other, while Money just positions them as there is room. I also like Quicken's graphs and charts a little more, and the fact that Quicken's options allow you to see your net worth on the first page, while Money just shows account values on the first page so you have to click to another screen to see your net worth).

2. On investments, I think Money gives you a lot more information, including information about your best and worst performing investments, etc.

3. I think Money also has a bunch more features than Quicken might, and you get a lot of free options like MSN bill pay, free subscription to Money Magazine, etc.

All said, I think either program is a decent choice. After using Quicken for 3 years, I think I'm just a little more partial to Quicken just because it's more what I'm used to. Otherwise, Money I think gives you more bang for the buck.

Just to let you all know, I haven't had any bug issues with either program. Not sure if the other posters screwed things up on their own or just got early versions of the software that were buggy, but things have been smooth with respect to both programs. I also haven't experienced a bombardment of advertisements as some users are reporting.

Summary: No big problems...
Review: I was using Quicken 2002 Deluxe. I didn't upgrade to the 2003 version, because I read there wasn't any improvements. There are not any real big improvements in 2004 either.
I was a little worried after reading all of these negative reviews. So far... I haven't had ANY of the problems any one has mentioned here. But... I did do my upgrade differently.

First... I made a back-up of my current data.
Second... I deleted my previous version, COMPLETLY! After the Windows uninstall procedure, I then deleted all Intuit and Quicken folders I could find.
Third... Reboot the computer.
Fourth... Shut-down all running programs.

I will NOT put another Micro$oft product on my computer.
Yes... I am sure Intuit will release a patch, as they have always done for all of their products.
Come to think of it... I think 99% of all software products have patches and updates.

Summary: GOOD BYE QUICKEN 2004
Review: I am can not express my self how frustrated I was after I had loaded quicken 2004 on my XP system. I have been using 2003 successfully but 2004 version is soo slow. my system is 3.0ghz and 2 gb of ram and I could not believe it how slow it ran. The most ridicules part is that quicken 2004 will not revert database to 2003 version so I have to retype about two weeks of transactions!
Need advice - steer away from this product!!! I would not use it even if it was for free!!!

Summary: Major BUG
Review: I have been using new version for about a month, today got a sort of memory error that causes Quicken to shutdown. They don't have a fix. I am stuck. Tried reloading software, didn't fix problem. This has to do with Net Worth graphs looking at more than 12 months of data. Tried running performance reports and could never get any % always got N/A.

DO NOT UPGRADE

Summary: Intuit can't write software
Review: It appears that Intuit's product design and product quality control teams have no idea what they're doing and they deserve no financial support from anyone, so don't help them by buying new versions of Quicken.

I'm a long-time Quicken for Macintosh user that just bought Quicken Premier 2004 Home and Business for Windows. Quicken has continued to get worse and worse on the Mac, and I thought I'd look into switching to Windows, unfortunately, before I read all the bad reviews (including non-Amazon reviews).

Quicken Premier 2004 for Windows basically can't import QIF files properly, even from QIF files created by something as recent as Quicken Deluxe 2002 on the Mac. Some information doesn't get imported at all, even though, when looking at the data in the QIF file with WordPad, the data is definitely there, and accurate. Duplicate transactions, missing transactions, etc. are other problems that occur during the import process. Not exactly something you'd like to see on 10 years of financial data.

For those who want a refund, Intuit _claims_ they have a 60-day unconditional refund for both physical and electronic downloads of Quicken ...

Summary: Buggy...disappointing...and NOT for WIN 98
Review: Wow...16 reviews so far and not one positive. I eagerly bought the '04 Quicken Deluxe...as I have been for the past 5 years...and was extremely disappointed when it crashed my WIN 98 system which had NEVER crashed in 2 years. "Chatted" with tech support (since I don't have the $40,000 to talk to them personally on the phone) and they said it was "intended" for Win XP. Couldn't even navigate around the program without windows app errors and crashes/reboots. Time after time. Put it on my XP system...and while it seems more stable...seems more cluttered and difficult to use than ever. They had something so good in the late 90s...and in the process of the last 3-4 years...have managed to ruin it. Terrible tech support...buggy software...complicated. I am so disappointed. I have given Intuit a lot of $$$ over the years...I think MS Money 2004 is in my future. Way to lose one more customer, Intuit.

Summary: What a Desaster!
Review: I have been fairly happy so far with Quicken, but this version is plain terrible.

The upgrade seemed to go OK at first, and the setup reported it had all data converted. But as soon as the program ran for the first time, I was in for a surprise! First of all, the program didn't even show up. Then, I relized that it was simply positioned somewhere off screen, so I couldn't see it. I can maximize it through the task bar, and sometimes, I can move it using the keyboard. But doing this every time it starts up is a pain!

Also, many things just do not work. For instance, the net-worth graph is totally broken if you show more than a year of data. And if you dare to change the date range more than once or twice, the program crashes to the desktop. If you do that a few times, you have to reboot your machine, because Quicken crashes on startup!

Also, I just plain hate how Quicken now keeps make you do certain things a certain way. This seems to get worse with every version. It tries to upload all your financial data to the web. It also tries to sucker you into all kinds of other deals Quicken offers. There are advertisements all over the place. And there are a number of dialogs that come up every time and you can' get rid of. Reconcile a credit card account and it asks you ever time whether you want to write a check. No, I don't, thank you! (I am paying my CCs online). Next time again: "Do you want to write a check?" NO, I DON'T! And on the third card you enter, again: "Are you sure you do not want to write a check?" YOU ARE DAMN RIGHT I AM!

Aren't those types of things standard these days? They are in all the apps I build...

And finally, Quicken just doesn't seem to improve the way I want it to. I guess that's just because my needs are not mainstream. Or are they? I had been hoping for a way to automatically update currency exchange rates. I had also hoped for a way to indicate that I only own a certain percentage of a property, so it shows up right in the net worth calculation. I had also hoped for better ways to analyze my portfolio with much easier ways to see how well each holding does year-by-year, rather than all-time. This is especially true for stock I have all sold, but I still would like to go back and see how well it performed and (more importantly) how it developed since then to see whether I made the right decision. I would also like a better stock-wish-list feature that would allow me to track much more information about stock I am considering to buy.

Those would all be nice features. Of course right now I would be happy if the thing would run for more than 3 minutes without crashing. Maybe I should switch to MS Money after all...

Summary: A previously loyal Quicken customer who is fed up
Review: I recently installed Quicken Premier on a very stable computer running Win XP. I am appalled at the number of bugs in this program and the extreme difficulty in contacting Intuit or even finding any answers in their so-called support FAQs and databases. I am experienced with Quicken, having used it since the mid '90's and am very computer-tech savvy. I've experienced multiple program halts and crashes in the middle of simple transaction sessions. Frequently the Home page loads as a blank page or loads only some images. Despite customizing multiple reports and saving them, they continue to open without the custom changes. The 'income report' insists on showing transfers between accounts as income, despite checking the box that "excludes internal transfers" on or off.
Here's the WORST of it and the problem that will bring the fund companies down on Intuits neck: When you run the program, it analyzes your mutual funds, brings up an alert box telling you all about your funds and takes you to the Intuit Brokerage site to show you how other funds have much lower expenses than yours. Most of this information is extremely erroneous. It lists 'Load' funds as having no expenses, it lists some funds with significant expenses as having '0' expenses and it told me that some of my funds charge as much as 2.5% annually in fees, which was bunk - I checked other fund sites and the Fund companies own sites. This is astonishing and libelous. Do not buy this program. And don't think that Quicken support is available in any meaningful way without a fee.

Summary: Worst Quicken Yet
Review: This version of quicken is by far the worst release yet. I will not purchase the program again. The program has several bugs...the more serious one forces the user to shut down the program in the middle of transactions and reboot quicken. A call to quicken revealed that Intuit is well aware of this bug and the rep told me "they are working on a fix" Apparently the program was not fully tested prior to its release. At least not enough to find this bug.

To add insult to injury, intuit has the nerve to place annoying advertising within the program. There is a button with the quicken mastercard logo. If you click on that button you will be taken to the quicken services home page where they will attempt to sell you other quicken services such as quicken bill-pay and quicken mastercard. The programs user interface, in my opinion, is gaudy, much too busy and not at all professional looking....hardly the kind of user interface that would inspire confidence in the softwares ability to handle my financial transactions in a safe, secure and professional manner. Quicken has obviously lost sight of the value of simplicity. The interface is jamed with information whick requires the user to be extremely cautious (slow) least you click on the wrong button and delete your files. As a used of prior versions of quicken I am quite familiar with the program and can remember when quicken was streamlined, concise and fun to use.

Anyone considering the purchase of the program should first try the trial version so that unlike me, if you do not like the software you will not be stuck for the purchase price.

Summary: Terrible Product & Company!
Review: I wish I would have read these reviews first. MS Money can't convert this 2004 version yet and I know I can't go back to Quicken 2001. Trust all of these bad reviews!
