Summary: Eq addict from MO
Review: I bought this game within the first week it was out and was so excited to try it I could hardly wait for stores to restock their shelves before I was able to get a copy....... then reality struck.

I had 386 with plenty of free space and their other recommendations met and still had lag galore forever. I couldnt play on the moon for a long time and all I kept hearing from verant was "reinstall your vid card".... so I did, several times, using their link from their website. I also was told to reinstall all my expansions (which wipes out ur custom buttons btw). Not a good idea. Eventually figured to try reinstalling the vid card from manufacturers site and that did the trick for the most part but still had to get the full 512 for it to run better. It says min requirements 250 but dont believe it.

As much as I love EQ I have never seen any other game with 512 needed for proper gameplay.. and it still had problems. Now several patches later things are smoothed out a ton but I dont believe they even spent 6 mths in beta testing.

The game itself is phenomonal. Brillant colors and textures with wonderfully improves graphics for the char models. More options for personallizing your chars but I still think that for 512 we should have had more options. Many of the male chars, esspecially, still look all alike in the face.

I am still an EQ addict but I tell you my confidence is wavering about the next expansion unless it is a step back to fix things and just offer more options.

Summary: An ambitious undertaking...
Review: First, SOE (Sony Online Entertainment) never said SoL (Shadows of Luclin) would be playable on a laptop. For that matter, Classic/Kunark/Velious were never touted as laptop games either.

Second, although SoL was rushed for the Christmas 2001 season, SOE has been committed to fixing the bugs on a weekly basis so that the game is playable by more people. Yeah, they messed up majorly by releasing a subpar expansion that needs more than the recommended system requirements just to play it smoothly. But, they are fixing it. You gotta admit SOE is doing a better job here than the creators of Anarchy Online (and Ultima Online).

Third, SOE's biggest competitor at the moment is Mythic Entertainment, the creators of Dark Age of Camelot. I have to admit DAoC is impressive. But, I don't like being limited to one realm and only a handful of character races/classes (each of the three realms has its own). If you cross realms, you're automatically at war with all races in that realm. And, you cannot create characters in different realms on the same server. IMHO, EverQuest does a better job.

Summary: Game Bugs + Major LAG + Poor Customer Service = GAMEOVER
Review: I've had a love-hate relationship with this game for 10 months. EQ's depth is UNPARELLED! However, it's PLAYABILITY has already been SURPASSED by other MMPOGs.

Basically,

1. Numerous bugs: All games have bugs, but EQ's are excessive due to lack of testing by developers. This lack of testing is most likely due to VI's rush to meet SoL's scheduled release date.

2. LAG: If a 1Ghz, 1GB RAM, 64MB video card, and a cable modem can't run an MMPOG well, then something's not right with the code (refer to 1).

3. CS: Nonexistent. GL my friend on getting any help from VI.

EXACTLY WHY I QUIT: My 55 Warrior was running thru Grimling Forest (with T-boots) heading towards Hollowshade Moor (I was the only one in zone). I had 2 bubs of health left. No sweat, since this zone is well below my level. Accidentally agro'd a single lite-blue grimling (of all the luck, one of the highest in the zone). I should easily be able to run away right (got T-boots)? WRONG! I encountered such severe LAG when the grimling got near me that he was able to beat the life out of me within two-three minutes. I am talking PEANUT BUTTER LAG! In summary, this little death was the final blow amongst numerous others that severed my relationship with this game. It just didn't seem worth it to try to do a CR, get a REZ, and then try to regain lost EXP. This game is good but NOT that good.

Now I play DAoC. If I die in DAoC, I laugh. DAoC makes EQ look like work!...

Summary: Great Game but Only for Powerful PCs - recd specs too low
Review: Ok, I am now officially an EQ addict, have 3 accounts so that my family and friends can play. 2 with Luclin upgrade. However, I have to warn purchasers of the hardware requirements needed to run this ideally.

Box says Minimum P2 400 256MB, recommended P3 or better (no Mhz stated) 512MB. Yeah right. I have a 1.5 yr old Vaio P3 750, 512MB, 16MB AGP Card, cable modem, win 98 and I had to run it with a bunch of options turned off. Even then it would go into slow motion every once in a while. It runs acceptably on my Thinkpad A30 1ghz, 640MB Win XP at 1024x768 mode, with most graphics options turned on but the sound chops up even on the lowest audio mode.

I upgraded the Vaio with a ATI Radeon 7500 64MB card and was able to run great with all memory models turned on in the older zones. However, in Shar Vahl on Luclin, there is still some slowness when panning quickly due to the high detail graphics. Not satisfied I bought a new custom built PC, 1.7G P4, 1G mem, 64MB NVidia GEForce 3, SB Audigy Gamer, Win XP, and finally after downloading the latest drivers was able to run the game with everything turned on to the best settings.

If you have this you will really enjoy the game. It brings the several year old Everquest almost but not quite in par with some of the newer games in terms of image quality and interface. However, the size of the online experience and the huge community makes up for this.

The new graphics set does change the look of the characters quite a bit and there is no consistency. For example a my dark haired Druid in Luclin is Blonde when viewed in the old version.

Summary: You will NOT get bored
Review: I have tried DAoC and Anarchy Online, I eventually got bored with both, however, with Everquest, I have played since it went live several years ago and STILL not bored. They are forever adding expansions and revising so it is constantly fresh content. I have several of the highest level characters you can get and just make more so I can stay active and enjoy all levels of the play. SO VERY realistic.

Summary: Un-impressed
Review: I purchased Luclin, but in my opinion its not worth the money... The zones are poorly designed, basically every zone has mobs that gang up on you, which make for zero fun if you prefer to solo as most people do. If you start out as a Vah Shir (cat person), its literally impossible to leave your home land without a teleport due to the fact the adjacent lands are extremely high level.

For whatever reason Verant decided to make Luclin be on another planet. Apparently the game has already become star wars.

Like many others have mentioned, Everquest is a huge time sink for a game. If you play, plan on spending many hours every day to even have a chance to get anywhere in the game. Every single aspect of the game is designed, intentionally, to waste your time... therefore more money for Verant.

The game has been out 3 years now, and is to the point that just about everyone playing is playing with a twinked character (twinked=having high level gear that you normally wouldn't get starting out new) So I'm certain that Verant has tweaked the game to offset the twinking... which means its extremely hard for a non-twinked character to even level.

Summary: Recent review of Shadows of Luclin
Review: Graphics from everquest, to kunark, to velious were all pretty much the same... when luclin came out characers were 100% different, not just the head or so, the whole characters looks have gotten more realistic... the details on a monks robe shows even the patches... even a rangers Rygorr Battle Mail armor can be seen down to each mail... each piece of armor is completely different than before, and the designs that made it so worthwhile to seek have made it sometimes worth it. Also, you can change hair color, beard color, eye color...
Cons- the sky hasnt changed... doesnt look like a sky, no clouds! Not like i have the time to just sit and look around anyway.

Spells:
My class alone (and there are about a dozen classes) got at least 5 spells ranging from the teen levels to the level 50's. When casting spells, the character doesnt always use the same arm movements, there are several ways they cast now, one handed or even using two hands.

Alternate Advancement:
Like getting to level 60 is not enough turmoil (IT IS)... There are ways to improve your characters stats permanently, how about running 3 times faster than usual? How about adding 10points to your Dexterity, Strength, Stamina, Wisdom, Intelligence, and Agility, permanently?... and oh theres so much more... for us Paladins (and shadowknights) when we reach the highest of levels, we can summon the Ultimate Steed (horses); not paying obsene amount of coin for one.
Cons - the level 60 characters are coming down from the planes and other super high zones and running over the level 50 zones so they can solo and camp what the lower level guys are trying to get so the can gain in their Alternate Experience points.

Entire Game
I am level 55 and have not even been to half of the original everquest game... and been to about half of kunarks expansion, been to about 1/10 of Veliou's expansion... now luclin... I gave it a test drive and to my surprise... the zones were enormous in size, its like combining several regular zones to make up just one Luclin zone (I can see where horses would come in for the classes that dont have the ability to port or have spells to enhance our speed).
I went through the same patching blues as everyone else did... but knew from earlier expansions not to bother playing till about a week after the expansion came out. I guess im not as addicted as the others were who just "had to get" their "fix" (let me tell ya, there a a LOT of evercracks)

REQUIREMENTS:
I run a 1Ghz AMD/256MB RAM/Radeon 64Mb system... on a 56k modem. After reading the requirements for luclin, I just told myself... "great!, i was gonna buy some more memory anyway". Nor running 768Mb of PCI 133ram I zone faster than anyone i have met (remember im on 56k)... did I mention Im in Japan? I have confidence that the makers of the game will make/keep the game getting better (and getting rid of some bugs).

Catch me on Cazic Thule server as Lamini

Enjoy!

Review: To me, the newbies who say that DAoC is much better than everquest just say that because they can't understand how to play EQ. I went out and bought DAoC, and I played it for 1 hour. I sold it to my friend the next day. Sure, the graphics are flashy, but with the new Luclin expansion it more than doubles DAoC's polygon output. I had more fun playing the very first eq thatn DAoC. Theres about 15 times as much space. Trust me on this one guys, EQ is just better.
