Summary: Take your money and run
Review: If you enjoy paying to play a poor beta then this is your game. DAoC has virtually no high end PvE content. RvR is broken. Mythic has isolated themselves from their customer base, probably in large part because of all the frustrated bulletin board postings regarding this game. At least one third of the classes in every realm need major work done to them, with all classes needing some work. Basically, once you get past the eye candy of a new game and really get down to playing it, you realize that this game simply was not ready for retail release. On top of that, Mythic is already discussing their upcoming expansion pack!! I'm amazed that they can say that with a straight face. Save yourself a few dollars and don't buy this game. I certainly wish I hadn't.

Summary: Best game I've played this year
Review: Dark Age of Camelot (DAoC) is the first MMORPG that I have played since Ultima Online many years ago. These graphics are astounding compared to the old UO. I think it is very fun to get into groups and just have a little chitchat while killing some bandits or fire ants. All the different character types are useful in a group. You need someone who can resurrect people who die, someone with a ranged attack that can draw monsters out of a group, etc. And it is most enjoyable to know that I am talking to actual people who have their own personality and opinions.
Now to counterpoint the gamer from C'Ville Illinois, whose review was upsetting. One piece of advice, RTFM! The manual will tell you how to walk (the ] key). If you want to have serious social chats, go to a chat room. DAoC is a game with less emphasis on social mixers. The sound..ok the sound is not the best, but the monster sounds are varied. And you do NOT have to provide credit card info the first month, if you read the box that pops up it says you can cancel and will receive periodic reminders. Another person complained about holding down the up arrow for ten minutes. There are 2 solutions there-- 1) rent a horse or 2) press the numlock key to turn on autorun (also in the manual).
This game has held my attention for a while now; when I try to play other games, I keep going back to DAoC.

Summary: Utter disaster...
Review: Having no mention of the monthly fee was bad enough (I now see that it has been added to the end of the description) but even if this game were free, it still would disappoint. My system easily exceeds the minimum requirements yet I have been unable to play for more than a minute before locking up or simply crashing. The concept is great and I'm sure there are those out there successfully enjoying the game, but for me (and I'm sure many like me) it has been a disaster. Stay away until the necessary improvements are made. Now if only I hadn't given it as a gift!

Summary: How about pointing out the "small monthly fee" before we buy
Review: $10 a month is not a small fee when there is no warning about it when the purchase is made. The thing should be free, not $30. I checked again and found no reference to the fee, only that "an internet connection is required". My 12 year old is pretty dissappointed in Amazon for this.

Summary: DAoC DOES work on Win 2K and XP
Review: I've been running DAoC on a Win 2K system since beta. And we have a system in our home running it on XP with no issues.

Summary: Wonderful game #1 game of the year!!
Review: Was fortunate to be a part of the first beta 3 people, and guild beta. Did much of our research on how to play and what to play then. Mythic has not disappointed me, with this wonderful game!!!

This is by far NOT a "jump in and make Uber Levels in one night" type game. It's challenging to a fault and you can't "WIN" or "Finish" the game. You can't create the Ultimate Fighting Machine that will slaughter all that comes near, just won't happen. You can't find a buddy that is 20 levels above you to power level in record time, just won't happen. Twinking (the art of giving a character items way over their normal ability to gain, so that it will give them an unfair advanatage over the monsters they will kill for experience) is controlled in a way that you can use the items you're twinked with, but they wont' work quite right and degrades quicker since at your level you don't know how to use it right :P If you hunt in an area that is far over your ability YOU WILL DIE! So you will need to use your brains to figure out where to go that will be more for your level.

I've seen people get frustrated because they were on their "15th death in 2 hours", the game now "Sucks" and EQ is better...." .. "HELLO!!! Maybe you're hunting somewhere a bit over your skill level? No matter how many times you bash on those monsters they are still going to kill you if you're a wuss to them ;P"

Experiences are capped so that no one has an unfair advantage over others when leveling. If you're hunting way above your level (with a twinked character, or hunting with buddies way above you) you can only make so much (and in some cases experience Penalties)... So hanging out with your buddies, level way above your own, will yield little advantage at any level. You are pretty much forced to contribute in the game, not just sit back and leech :P

Every Realm (Brit, Norse and Celt) has it's plus' and minus', each class in those realms have their strengths and weakness'...... OMG like real life!! Go figure!

You must work as a Team if you want to defend your realm, or you solo and just work your way up the leveling ladder in safety within your Realm by doing Quests or hunting. You can pursue trade skills and support your fellow realm-mates by making armor, weapons and items to create a siege engine.

Do you want a challenge of a perpetual world, which combines an RPG (Role playing and leveling within your own realm through quest and hunting MOBs), strategy (making battle plans with other realm members, building siege engines to take over other realm's forts) and Capture the Realm's Relics (a la Tribes)? If you actually want to use some gray matter in playing a game, then this is the game for you.

If you're looking for an easy "Hack/slash and get to 50 quick so I can be Uber" stay with EQ and AC.

Summary: something for everyone
Review: I was able to resist the call of modern MMOG games like EQ until now. But this one pushed me to buy it. I bought the game in October just after their initial release and haven't stopped yet. Coming from the old text MUD world this is everything I hoped/expected.
Yes, the running from place to place can be slow at first (a pet peeve of mine also) but after a few levels you take horses everywhere or learn how to run faster.
The world is HUGE, with 3 realms (continents) with overlapping frontiers that allow for PlayerVsPlayer (realm vs realm) conflict, or stay in the safer zones within your continent where it's you against the monsters. Tired of killing monsters, there are dozens of quests at every level, including ongoing epic quests.
Tired of killing monsters and doing quests (there are more that I can imagine) then take a break and practice tradeskills like woodcarving, armmorcraft, herblore, weaponsmithing, etc...even siegcraft. Those skill will help you as you progress in the world.
Tired of that, switch to player versus player conflict, and join with your guildmembers and those in your alliance and try to take over another realms keep and secure their sacred relic for your side!
The Mythic team addresses all bugs quickly, and adds enhancements biweekly. They are preoccupied with keeping their customers happy and are doing a great job making this world more and more fun by the day.

Summary: I am disappointed - expected more !
Review: i might be one of the few people who is disappointed w/ DAoC, but i can exactly list WHAT i do not like in this game. Please note that i play this game now only for two days...and in case i missed something or my information is wrong then i am sorry :)

(*) DAoC renders in 16bit graphics. I dont have any idea what the advantage should be rendering 16bit instead of the usual 32bit...the result anyway is ugly graphics and textures. Eg. stand in front of a door and see there is NO smooth color transitions etc...

(*) All people in DAoC run/sprint....i have NOIT figured out yet how to just WALK. This gives the game a hectic and non-social feel. You cannot just walk...and/or talk with someone walking by because everyone seems in a hurry like they're stung by a bee !
Why the developers chose that - god knows !!!

(*) The graphics in general are 'ok' (see above). Could've been far, far better...but they're ok.....3d models are primitive..eg trees etc...and the terrain consists of blocks with textures glued on...my god i had that similiar graphics 5 years ago with tombraider already - and now we have 2000! !

(*) where in DAoC are the places where people just gather, talk...chat, have fun ? I didnt see any tavern or similiar.
Instead, everyone is like in the area killing and slashin animals, like wolves, snakes etc..for gaining experience points. Everyone has something 'important to do' (killing) - ant the social aspect (the real RPG feeling !) is totally missing !

(*) it may be fun to be in groups - and then go for monster killings...but as said above...i miss more social interaction and more of a RPG 'flair'.

(*) soundeffects....are more sparely and could be better too.

(*) server lags and disconnects

(*) even if it says 'one month free' on the packaging...you are asked for your name, address and credit card number before you even can play the first time...i think that's odd. <---

Sorry...had to say that....i have very high standards regarding graphics and flair - and i am a bit disappointed with that game.

Overall...however i think it's an 'ok' game...but w/ lots on the 'ToDO-list' if i were a developer !

Summary: Few problems need to be fixed for game to prosper...
Review: Game is great however more bugs and issues are surfacing...

1 - Realms are not balanced... MIDGARD much too powerful, Albion average and Hibernia weak.

2. - Not all dungeons are itemized...ie: games not filled with content. (this is another case of product being rushed to street)

3. In-Game customer support [not good]. You submit an appeal and never hear from them. You do one offline and support tells you to contact on-line customer support.

4. Dungeons often too crowded also.

Realm wars are fun however MIDGARD always wins. Just too powerful and too many for other realms to compete. Game needs more balance. May wanna hold off on this one and look for Shadowbane at the beginning of 2K2

Summary: good concept, but who has the time?
Review: as someone who didnt play EQ, UO, AC, AO, or any other MMORPG before this, i thought before i bought that it would be very cool. and it is, to a degree.

the problem is that unless you pour at least three hours a day into this game, you will never get "good." and if you don't get good, youll die 5 times a day. and each time you die, youll have to spend at least five minutes running back to where you died. and it is largely due to this horrible convenience(sic) that i have come to dislike this game. unless you like holding down your up arrow for 10 minutes at a time, don't buy this game.

(...)

if you like the concept of this game, go to google and search for "mmorpg" and click on the first few sites that come up. search out other games genre that interest you. as far as mmorpg's go, im waiting for "World of Warcraft" by Blizzard. but for now, ive gone back to basics like unreal tournament, starcraft(you really miss this game once its gone), and diablo 2.

i seriously hope this review has prevented someone from buying this game. if wanna play a game of this type, wait six months and see whats out then.
