Summary: awesome
Review: This game is one of the best games of all times! Even if you have already bought it on ps2 you should buy it just to edit things or and new cars/islands/missions to the game.

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Great as a stress reliever
Review: Wonderful game, one of the best I have ever played, a far, FAR step up from GTA2. Lets list the ways:

1. Fully realized simulated 3D city
2. Over 50 different vehicles from boats to sports cars
3. Tons of characters ...BR>4. More than one view (birds-eye view of GTA2 gave me a headache)
5. Lots of missions and side-quests you can do that seem fairly logical (except snipeing the Don of the Sicilian from a rooftop 20ft away from the nightclub he is in)
AND LOTS MORE

I do recomend this for PC though because it has advanced graphics, sound, you can play your own music, load your own skins, THERE WILL BE UPDATES TO FIX BUGS, ect ect.
I have to recomend this to gamers of all kinds because of its truley addictive gameplay,... There may be some parts that are not suitable for 10 year olds (i.e. you can pick up ladies of the night) but all-in-all its a must buy for all great gamers!

Summary: the difinitive game of the past few years
Review: chances are you know this game. i have yet to meet a person who hasnt played or watched someone play this game. nothing short of amazing. perfect combination of style and action with a hint of comedy around the edges. sure, its been attacked for its supposedly very high violence levels (i remember seeing montel williams flipping out on TV because you can kill a hooker) but its really not much worse than any other violent game.

if this game is reviewed with vice city in mind, the rating might go down. vice city is superior. but gta3 is the original, and if viewed on its own as the first, it is nothing short of amazing.

Summary: Unbelievably Fun
Review: At my age and comfort level it is unlikely that I will ever find myself in the position of being chased by three police cars and a helicopter while doing about 130mph down the freeway, and with rock and roll blasting in my ears. It probably isn't going to happen. But thanks to this delightful, challenging and often hilarious game, I now have a general idea of how, er, exciting this type of activity might be.

My goodness, this game is a blast. The premise is that you are a small-time hoodlum in the baddest part of the baddest town in the bad ole US of A. Your job is to become the baddest of the bad. For me, this took a little getting used to. At the beginning for example, I would actually wait for pedestrians to cross the street and even stopped at red lights. It didn't take long to throw those law-abiding inclinations out the window. Those kinds of notions need to be tossed right out.

You start off doing small jobs for small bosses, and as you become more successful, bigger jobs for bigger bosses. The first few missions are simply to drive people places, which is good, because it allows you to learn to drive (and steal) cars, and to become familiar with the city. (Plus, it helps to know that all of the cars are different in their speed, the way they handle, and in their destructibility.) As time goes by, your jobs encompass more complex entrepreneurial pursuits such as stealing things; high-jacking armored cars; whacking enemies with guns, grenades, cars and flamethrowers; blowing things up; and, eventually, double-crossing everyone. To complicate matters, you have to deal with the police, who, corrupt as they are, still can't abide the mayhem you are required to cause and come after you big time. By far, they are your most dangerous enemy, which, I know, sounds awful, but remember: you are a BAD guy.

The missions are varied and routinely lead into heart-pounding, tense excitement. Most require skill with cars and weapons, but there is a real cerebral element also. There is usually more than one solution, and you have to think. For example, in one of the missions, you have to knock off a mafia chief. First, you have to get to his area in a limited amount of time Once there, you have about a five second window of opportunity to get him: he comes out of a building, is surrounded by armed goons, and immediately gets into a bulletproof car. What to do? Eventually, I got him with a sniper rifle from a storefront. But on another try I tossed a grenade at him from a roof across the street. Another time I let him get in his car and attempted to run him off the road, but this was unsuccessful. This was not as easy as it sounds. I think I had to replay it about twenty times--usually the goons got me--before getting him.

And that's another great thing. Although many of these missions are very difficult, you never have to get stuck on one while waiting for your brain to kick in. There are so many other things to do. Steal a police car and run a vigilante mission, for example. Or an ambulance mission. Or taxi, or fire. Or drive around and look for hidden packages. All of these are very fun, and even better, after running a certain amount of them, give you big advantages in either health, weapons, or money. In fact, I would recommend doing these side missions first: you will be much better equipped to face the more difficult boss missions.

The look of the game is really amazing. It is a full, functioning, large, bustling city, with everything in it a city should have. Elevated trains, subways, (both of which you can ride), tunnels, bridges, you name it. You look up sometimes and see the moon, or in the distance, a jet taking off. I walked up to the top of a large hill in Shoreside Vale and looked across the river at the other boroughs, and oh my goodness, the whole thing was laid out before me, stunning and realistically beautiful.

And the tone of the game is right, too. Yes, it's a little violent, but cartoonishly so, and often with tongue placed firmly in cheek. There's really no way anybody should be offended by this. I mean, c'mon: citizens armed with pistols and baseball bats roam the streets, the police are brazenly corrupt, your chances of being run over by an ambulance are better than your being saved by one, and your reward for running a certain amount of fire missions is . . . a flamethrower. The end of the game, you walking away--briefly--with your prattling girlfriend, is an absolute classic, and again brought the familiar grin to my face.

There are eight radio stations to choose from while you're driving around. Some of the music is okay, but what is really hilarious is the commentary and commercials in between. I especially love the talk radio guy, Lazlow, and his nut-case guests, who regularly threaten to tear the tongue out of his head, or make him intimately acquainted with what the inside of his brains look like. It is really funny stuff, and it must have been an absolute riot creating it. The amount of attention they paid to this--a minor aspect of the game--is very telling.

This game is a blast, an absolute, unqualified blast, and as fun as anything out there. You can even keep playing after all the missions are done, but, sadly, after getting my wanted level to six, stealing a tank, and realizing that there was nothing anybody could do about it, I knew I had reached the end. But, I guess there's another one out there. God help me.

Summary: Bought, Shoot, Hooked
Review: I first bought this game for the PC having no idea about the game. When I hit some one with the baseball bat, I was shocked; I couldn't believe you could just run around and kill people. As harsh as that sounds, it's just a game, and a fun one at that. The missions are really good, and it seems that every inch of land has some use to it. The do-what-ever-you-want style game play is very cool. One of the best features of this game is the gang fights, they just randomly occur when the two different gang members see each other, and from then it's an all out war.

The plot of the game is that you were robbing a bank with your girlfriend and when you get the loot and are about to escape she shoots you. You end up going to jail, but on the way their some gang members stop your convoy and take one of the members back and blow up some of the bridge your on. You and another guy named 8-ball grab a car and he tells you to drive to a safe house, were you can store one car and were you can save your game, and get a baseball bat. After you get to the safe house 8-ball tells you to go to this one guy's club named Luigi, and Luigi gives you a job, and your Mob work begins, and the story unfolds.

The great thing about this game is the twists and turns, one minute this is going on the next this is. I recommend this game if you about 13 years old and you like cars, guns, and fast paced game play. Grand Theft Auto III is great and I can't wait for Grand Theft Auto IV to come out.

Summary: Disturbing, violent, sadistic, and loads of fun...
Review: Have you ever wanted to be the bad guy in a good crime saga? Here's your chance. "Grand Theft Auto 3" is for the people who've always wanted to make somebody "an offer they can't refuse".

During a bank robbery an unnamed man is shot and left for dead by his partner. He survives and is tried and convicted for the robbery. While he's being transported across town the convoy is ambushed, giving our hero and an associate of his the opportunity to escape. The story continues from here as our hero works his way up the underworld food chain, all the while awaiting an opportunity to take revenge on his former partner.

The locale is Liberty City, consisting of three separate districts/islands: Portland, Staunton, and Shoreside Vale. You begin in Portland and the other two islands are unlocked as you progress. Each island has a number of bosses for which you'll run all kinds of errands, ranging from driving a hooker around town to you and your fellow escapee sinking a cargo ship. There are also numerous side missions with which you can occupy your time. Along the way you'll have many choices in terms of cars and weaponry to get the various jobs done, as well as objects to collect that will make future missions easier and/or save you some time.

The gameplay ranges from ridiculously easy to moderately difficult. With most of the missions, it's simply a matter of using the right strategies and getting good at evading the cops. It also helps to memorize important locations, as they won't always appear on the map during the missions.

In my opinion, it's the side missions that can get difficult. Not so much the few races, which aren't too bad once you get used to driving, but things like the obstacle courses can get mighty frustrating. So frustrating, in fact, that I only bothered to complete two of them.

Some of the more entertaining side missions are the vehicle-specific ones. Tying for easiest is the Taxi. For anyone who's ever played "Crazy Taxi", this one should be a cinch. The other easy one is the Fire Truck, where you drive around the city dousing various burning vehicles. More difficult, and possibly the most annoying, is the Police Car(or another law enforcement vehicle, including the Tank). It would seem a simple task to chase down criminals, force them out of their cars and kill them, but the Police Car has terrible handling. Traction is weak, making it way too easy to lose control. Add to that its tendency to flip over and you have a recipe for aggravation. The hardest vehicle, though without approaching the Police Car's annoyance factor, is the ambulance. You have to pick up and deliver people to the local hospital. Sounds easy, but each hit you take(from a vehicle or other object) takes a bit off your time. The ambulance also has what none of the other vehicle missions do: levels; twelve, to be exact. Here's how it works: each level has a corresponding number of people to be delivered, but the ambulance only carries three. Running out of time is the least of your worries, though. Since all levels have to be completed in one run it gets incredibly tough because there's no way to repair the ambulance during the mission; in other words, you have to deliver a total of 78 people without damaging the ambulance to the point where it catches fire and explodes. Easier said than done, believe me.

When it comes to vehicles, GTA3 has just about anything you could want. There are huge vans, pickups, hummers, roadsters, and more and they all handle exactly as you'd expect. Later in the game you'll also gain access to an airplane which is nearly impossible to pilot, and a tank. Boats are used in a few missions, as well.

You won't find yourself lacking in the weapons department, either. From a simple baseball bat to a flamethrower and a rocket launcher you'll have more than enough to complete the missions or simply wreak havoc on the city. I had a great deal of fun perching myself at the edge of a building and picking off pedestrians with the sniper rifle. All you have to worry about then are helicopters, which can be readily dealt with using the rocket launcher. Or you can run around the city lobbing grenades into groups of people or firing rockets into a busy intersection and see how long you can survive on foot. The possibilities for random mayhem are practically endless.

On the technical front, graphics are superb with hi-resolution textures covering the massive cities working together with dynamic lighting to create the most realistic environment I've ever seen in a game. Sounds pack the appropriate punch and the game even allows you to substitute its music with your own MP3s. AI is great, though still lacking in at least one area: character movement is still decided in two dimensions. For example, I can stand atop the Staunton parking garage and the cops will simply mill about on the lower floor rather than walk up the ramps to reach me. I bet it could be done through predefined routes, but I can only imagine the code would be hideously complex. As an easier example, though, how hard would it be to make those cops jump over a short fence rather than just run into it like idiots?

One complaint before closing: those "Welcome to -----" messages as you travel between islands need to go, pronto. When you're driving high speed through a tunnel the sudden interruption is not only annoying, but throws off your timing. Instead, just print it to the screen as is done when you go between counties.

All in all, this is easily the most entertaining and realistic game I've played in years. Though it hardly qualifies as wholesome family entertainment, teens and/or anyone who's not offended by profanity, sexual innuendo, and graphic violence should derive a great deal of pleasure from this adventure into the worst side of humanity. Just do everyone a favor and leave the homicidal tendencies behind when you exit the game. :-)

Summary: Don't Spank Mah'...
Review: Don't be fooled about what others say about this game.
I talk with proof!
This game is SUPERB!
First of all, let me assure you that i usually don't speak like that.....in fact i don't play much computer games. Not because i can't is just that i figured what is so great about some graphics moving on a screen that got alot of people involved in it until they could not care less about nething else. The only game i have ever played was Packman which i got installed on my workstation at work LONGGGG time ago.
But that all changed, when I decided to take the plunge into the GTA3 World, that seemed to have dominated the life's of some of my close office mates. I was curious.....what was the BIG deal about??Why this game???? I just had to know!
And before you can say "What the....." I am already half way through the game.......ADDICTED.
Yes..addiction is what keeps me coming back to this game....
the is sooo much things to do, so little time. The possibilities are limitless, that's what i can summarize about this game for you. You can drive a cab, save lives, and even be the good guy and hunt down criminals........add to that the myriad of vehicles that you can take over......PHEEEEWWWWWWW!
And if I like it i can take the challenge and do a mission OR make that MISSIONS.......and earn more cash......But don't take my word for it.....though this game gave me a totally new perspective of computer gaming. If it wasn't for my office mates, i just would not have even known that such a game as GTA3 exists!

Conclusion: Get this game and be prepared for tones of fun.........endless FUN if i may add.
Oh by the way, make sure you have a good machine to run this game.....good as in NOT great.....my recommendation a Pentium 1Ghz and above with about 256 RAM make that DDR and a graphics card somewhere in the GF3-GF4 range....
Also this game is NOT suitable for children, so parents you might want to play this when they are not around.......i know it's tough..but that's how i played this game when my 5 year-old is not around.
Happy Gaming!
Long Live GTA3!!!!!!

Summary: GAME OF THE YEAR
Review: First off, to all the people who said it wouldn't run on their "power" rigs, I have 384MB RAM, 1.79 GHz and it runs PERFECTLY. If you think the graphics are terrible just go to options and turn off TRAILS. This improves the graphics greatly.
Also, To the people who gave it 1 star just because its a port of the PS2 version, the game has been significantly improved over the PS2 version. First off, it utilizes full use of the mouse, making aiming MUCH easier. The graphics are greatly improved, you can fully customize your character, and an mp3 player has been added to the radio lineup. This allows you to play your favorite mp3s in the game while driving a vehicle.

Now to gameplay. Computer Gaming World named this GAME OF THE YEAR, and for good reason. The game spans over three HUGE sections of the city; all distinctively different. There are more stealable vehicles than one can count, and an assortment of over 10 weapons to choose from. My personal favorite aspect of the game is that you can actually drive up to a hooker on the street, and she will get into your car and have sex with you. ;) With over 40 missions to accomplish, numerous sub-missions to do, and the fact for once you actually play as the bad guy, makes this one of my favorite games of all time. The only people who I wouldn't recommend this to are those individuals who are easily offended by anything (i.e. voilence, drugs, cursing, etc.) For all others, this is definitely a $ well spent.

Summary: awesome
Review: I have finished GTA3 on the PS2 and the PC version is a gem to the eye compared to the PS2. The graphics are so much better, loadtimes are incredibly short. The controls are a little harder to get used to. I have no problems at all running this on Windows XP, a powerful system is recommended though to play at the highest settings to prevent the graphics from being choppy.
I run this on a P4 2.4GHz, 1064MB RAM and a Radeon Pro 9700 videocard.
It is a pity the PC version has nothing added to it and the grapics could have been even better.

All in all a superb open ended game with a zillion things to do, i cant wait for GTA VC to come out on PC.
