Summary: Stunning visuals, but outrageous resources requirements...
Review: I am going to make this very simple, the quote on the box states "best looking RPG ever". This is not an exaggeration -- this is pure fact. The monsters, weaponry and game space are without equal -- anywhere, in any game. But at the same time, imagine trying to play Doom 2 or Civilization on an Atari 2600. You got it: it won't work -- just like Morrowind on most modern day HOME computers.

Unless you're running it on an NSA mainframe (think Cray supercomputer), then expect three hours of wait time for every hour of play time, or worse. And even though the visuals are stunning, it becomes maddeningly frustrating to have to deal w/ all the load times, oftentimes in the middle of battle.

To give you a sense for the system requirements, I run an HP 9895 with 256 MB of RDRAM with an Intel 1.7 Ghtz Pentium 4 processor and a video card with 32 megs of video RAM. And this game cooks all system resources and consistently crashes my machine about every 45 minutes. If Bethesda Softworks (the company who eveloped this game) is reading this: yes, this is an indictment of your ability to manage code and system resources -- you've done a terrible job of this in Morrowind.

Net/net:
1) Awesome visuals
2) Cool monsters and weaponry
3) Huge, and I mean huuuuuge world to play in
4) Unfortunately, do yourself a favor, put your money and time elsewhere -- this game is simply not fun due to the exasperatingly slow play caused by flawed programming

Summary: A Truly Great game with very few flaws
Review: A while back I played one of the first old Elder Scrolls games and while the graphics were terrible (by today's standards) I was impressed with the open-ended RPG system and storyline. Morrowind has caught up to the age of graphics (and then some) and keeps the same freedom of "go wherever, do whatever." You can create any kind of character, customize her look and abilities and do anything you want as long as you're prepared for the consequences.

The graphics were beautiful and the detail impressive. The weather changes, clouds move, the sky has constellation, the sun rises and sets, flags blow in the wind--several times my wife and I have jumped at the crash of lightening from a surprise thunderstorm in the game.

The NPC's are interesting, I just wish they could join you in a more of a "party" system. I have had allied characters follow me around, however. The only bad part to the NPC's is that strangers and shopkeepers have a tendency to insult you in town if you have a low personality score and simply walk near them, even if you aren't really pausing in front of them. But it IS interesting how you can befriend, beguile, bribe or irritate the other characters. Doing favors increases how much they like and aid you.

As far as performance, I don't understand how one of the earlier reviewers had any problems with his "2.4 ghz" machine. I ran mine on an AMD XP1600 (a 1.4ghz machine) and a 64MB Nvidia Geforce 2 card. The performance was almost flawless with the default settings. Very rarely does the frame rate pause or the game ever skip or crash. The few times it has crashed have been when I was trying to load another saved game so it wasn't detrimental. I did install the patch shortly after I started playing the game so I may have gotten to skip some of the earlier ugliness some gamers experienced. Installation was quick and painless.

Combat, while not perfect is exciting. You can swing your weapon in different ways, and the armor and weapons are realistic. There is no guarantee of survival. There is some strategy to it and in melee you find you and your opponent circling each other like boxers. Archers and mages back away from you so they have room to pummel you with arrows or spells and you find yourself doing the same. Baddies will chase you up stairs, thru rivers and around obstacles fairly intelligently. Only occasionally was I able to "cheat" the artificial intelligence.

I would like to see a multiplayer version of the game, not in the Massively Multiplayer sense such as Ultima Online or Everquest, but more of 2 to 8 players roaming a map or completing quests cooperatively. Also it would be interesting if a DM type person could change things and interact with the characters during play like Vampire: Redemption.

My only other complaint is the game lacks a cohesive value system, but that is my own personal prejudice. The world of Morrowind is kind of "dark-gray" and I don't feel there is much "heroism" to it, but some players might like not being tight cast. I like games like the Ultima series that had a moral and ethical sense to them and the drama that went with it. Maybe as I get farther into the storyline, the game will have a more "good vs. evil" theme that I'm not getting so far. Again, this is just my preference. But part of this is because of the freedom you enjoy in playing your character-you can be completely evil if you want.

Overall, Morrowind is a great game and I look forward to playing more of it this weekend. My wife is getting into it even though she isn't as into Computer and table-top RPG's the way I am. I'm glad someone got with the program and made a game that let's you be whatever and whoever you want instead of tying you to a specific character and storyline. Thanks Bethseda.

Summary: Beautiful Game -- Well Worth It
Review: I bought with trepidation after hearing all the bug reports, and the first thing I did was install the patch. I think I've probably played for about 50 hours, and I have only had two crash-to-desktops. The only reason I am not giving the game a perfect 5 is because there were small bugs -- like the local map/character portrait not working. Still, while that made things a little more difficult, it didn't make them impossible, and I enjoyed the game immensely. Beautiful graphics, lots of plot lines, very engaging; and the ability to configure different characters gives it replayability. The game world is huge. Still, this is a game about finding things and killing monsters . . which could get tiresome for some people after a while.

Summary: Great idea, came up very short
Review: All games have their pros and cons, things they did just right and other things that could have been done better. Morrowind is no exception, what makes it unique is how drastic the pros and cons are.
Morrowind is set in an enormous world for the player to explore. The size of the world is so big and so detailed, that at times it seems to good to be true. You could spend weeks walking around the "world map" in Morrowind, and never see the same thing twice. You have more freedom than in any game I have ever played, it truely is a breakthrough in this respect. So why do I think the game [disappoints]? Check out these cons:
The game's programming is nothing short of lunacy. The number of bugs in this game are uncountable. And these aren't small bugs, I'm talking about bugs that crash your system, I'm talking about bugs that you encounter every 15 minutes of game play. If you ask me, it is outrageous that this game was allowed to be shipped to stores with the number of programming bugs in it. Without a patch, the game is seriously unplayable, it crashes constantly. What really infuriates me about this game is that they designed a vast and complicated world that is a programming phenomenon, but they said "heck with it" when it came to making it stable. What a waste of a wonderful game. Another example is that they put a 3rd person perspective in this game, which I love. But they didn't put a crosshair on the screen to use to aim, there is only a crosshair in first person mode. In other words, if you are playing in third person, you can forget about long distance arrow shots or magic spells, you'll miss every time unless you have hours and hours to practice. If you go to their web support page, you will see that "how do I get a crosshair in third person mode" is a question in their FAQ. When you click to see the answer, it simply says "you can't". Thanks a lot for the help guys! If there are so many people wanting a crosshair that it warranted a FAQ question, you would think they would release a patch to allow it to happen, not just say "you can't". It would take a decent programmer about a half hour to accomplish this.
Finally, and this may be the most important flaw of all, the system requirements are outrageous. What is indicated on the box as the recommended requirements is a joke. There is no way you could play this game with the "recommended" machine. I have a 2.4 ghz processor with a 128 meg GeForce 4 card and I can't get a smooth framerate in this game. Every piece of my computer is state of the art and I can't play this game at decent quality. The graphics are good, but they aren't that good. Grand theft auto 3 uses a very similar graphics engine and it looks worlds better with smooth as silk framerates. Morrowind is so half assed it makes me sick. They designed the perfect world, and threw the gameplay and stability out the window. The interface is horrible and the fighting is also terrible. What a horrible shame. Hopefully someday someone will create a world similar to Morrowind, but take the time to include game play in the equation! As well as make it stable and not crash all the time. Now that would be perfect!

Summary: a solid, and VERY expansive rpg
Review: Morrowind is one of the most creative and immensly large rpgs i have ever played, and the plot isn't generic as well. although highly glitchy, the online downloadable patches solve most problemswith crashes. once you start, and commit yourself to an hour of play, hours turn to days, days turn to weeks, etc. the way they portrayed every NPC with personality and attributes is great. from bretons to kajjits, you can be whoever you want to be and do what you want to do.

Summary: Fun Game...and Extremely Difficult
Review: Being a fan of RPGs like Chrono Cross, Final Fantasy series (except for 7), I heard about this game that was supposed to be very revolutionary, time consuming, and fun. And after I played it, like whoa.

There were some things that were new to me. First of all, this game is not a hack and hit game. This game involves strategy that you've never seen before. In every aspect of this game, strategy is the key, otherwise you'll go no further. In fights, you're accuracy is like literally 30%, thus you have to dodge more than attack often times. The strategy involved and the AI (artificial intelligence) really impressed me. I dare say (sorry to all FF fans), that the AI and strategy of this game was the best I've ever seen.

This game took me about 300 hours to beat. Probably because I spent time beefing up my Argonian, looking for stuff, and powered myself up. Also, I realized the more factions you join, the more time the game extends. All in all, this game requires a lot of time and a lot of patience to beat. Even the best RPGer is not going to beat this game in a heartbeat.

Graphics in this game were splendid. It could easily be seen that this game took full advantage of the power the Xbox had. Whether it was the realistic raindrops seen on the water, seeing the waves of the water, or seeing a smooth transition from day to night, the graphics and presentation was definitely something worth being impressed about.

All in all, this is great RPG. The only reason why I docked this game to 4 notches was because the game was very difficult and the bulk of the game was a bit slow (unless you can afford transportation, you're talking about spending 1-2 hours walking from one town to another). However, the benefits of the game obviously destroys that one minor flaw. If I could, this game should be a 4.5.

For all RPG fans, this is a must-buy. For virtually any gamer, this is a must-buy. The only types of gamer that should hesitate to grab this game is gamers that crave fast-action games or panic games.

Summary: WOW this is great!!
Review: This game is great,I dont have it yet but i played my friends. I was just getting to the second town when I stopped but so far the game was great. One of the coolest things getting to make your own player with any face u want, any hair want, and any beard or mustache u want. You can be over 30 different races and be tons of people(Example: a thief a knight etc.). Whats also cool is that u dont have to follow the main story. You can unlock doors to houses and kill the people inside and steel all there stuff, or help people(but why help someone when u can take all there stuff).

Summary: The first video game to completely blow me away
Review: I was hesitant about buying this game and decided not to get it after reading a couple bad reviews. I rented it for X-box and tried it out and was completely blown away. I ended up buying it for PC (so I didn't have to share it with roomates) and I have been playing it every waking moment every since (around work and seeing girlfriend of course). The graphics are insane, the game play is incredible interesting and the world itself is enormous. Anyone would be crazy not to play this, let alone give it a poor review. This is easily the best game I have ever played, better than Diablo 2. PLease rent it or something and try it out. But I will warn you it will dominate a lot of your time.

Summary: A True RPG
Review: Morrowind is the single best game I have ever played. You create your own story by chosing name, species, class, etc. You can either decide to follow the games main plot or go on your own quests exploring the vast world in Morrowind. What set's this game appart from other's is that it let's you choose to use almost any object or resource in the game and that affects you accordingly. The more you carry the slower you move etc. If you walk into a city and find a fork on a table you can pick it up. This has the greatest gameplay, graphics and just about any other specification you can think of is exceptional. I truly recommend this game for someone looking for a real game where you create and affect the ending and story by your decisions and not have something happen every once in a while because you reached a checkpoint in the game.
