Rating: Summary: Wow, this is cool. Review: At first it seems a little odd. A seemingly light storyline, a bit tricky to play at first. Two things make it worth playing: the graphics and sound. The music is good, very clear, good sound effects. The graphics are friggin' awesome. On my little Voodoo 2 the display is wonderful, the movement of, well, everything is very realistic. But for those I stuck with the game, and it turned out to be incredibly entertaining. Each and every NPC has a distinctive attitude (though you don't get to interact with them as much as I'd like), the ships are quite detailed, the battles are captivating (though you really have to hold down the R key, you'll understand why if you play). I recommend it.
Rating: Summary: Wow...what a game. Review: Despite the fact that it is the buggiest game I have ever played, I can't stop playing it. Despite the fact that the patch recently released for it did nothing to reduce that bugginess, I can't stop playing it. Despite that fact that there are certainly some important features missing altogether (meaning things I wish had been included in the game), I can't stop playing it.The graphics when on the ocean, whether firing cannons at enemy ships or trying to avoid a storm, are simply breathtaking. Make sure you have a GOOD video card, because a decent one just won't do. I had been looking for a good pirate game since Pirates! Gold. Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, come one, come all, for this is it. Yes...yes...I bashed it good on the bug issue. And yes it does have bugs, but bugs can be patched. What patches do: They cover a pirate's eye (stereotypically). What patches don't do: Add playability, eye-popping graphics, and overall interest. No sir, the game must already come with that. This one does. P.S. Despite the fact I am very tired, I can't stop playing it.
Rating: Summary: One of the Best! Review: Don't be scared off by some of the bad reviews. Although I'm not a pirate gamer, I certainly enjoyed this game. First the Cons, It's true that tutorials are badly needed in this game and the fighting mode is easy to learn but you die easy too. The game is very difficult at first but you really get engrossed in the game and story lines after a while! Also before you do anything after installing, go to their website and download the patch or you'll go crazy! Pros, This game has one of the best music I've heard in long while! It really fits the mood of the game. Make sure that you have a very good graphics card, cause on a GeForce this game rocks!! Very good graphics during the sea battles make this game very addictive all around!Attacking a fort can be very challenging, so be prepared with a heavy warship or be blasted to Davy Jones Locker! Definately worth the money...P.S. For those of you interested in a corrected version, Sea DogsII is coming out this summer! They say it's got lots of extras!
Rating: Summary: Would be more fun if it was easier Review: Even with the patch (v1.06) which lets you select Easy difficulty level, the game is still pretty hard. The ship you start off with is absolutely pathetic! You have the weakest cannons, so the range is shorter requiring you to get super close to the enemy ships who then just pound you because they have more, better cannons. Then if you try to board, you die. I haven't successfully boarded a ship yet. One swipe from the enemy captain and I die. Isn't that a bit silly? So to build up your ship and cannons, you have to travel back and forth between the same two islands trading goods. Very frustrating. Yet somehow despite these frustrations, I feel like if I can just get better there is fun to be had. Will give it a couple more games and see...
Rating: Summary: Good Game Review: Great game amazing graphics a few flaws thats patch fix the second sould be better
Rating: Summary: If ye don't like this game then ye should walk the plank. Review: Hey this is a great game. It is very entertaining and fun. I can't stop playing it. A very good game, highly recommeneded, although tutorials would have been nice.
Rating: Summary: Hard aground despite shallow draft Review: I agree with the reviewer who says it's buggy. It is. It's the buggiest ...game I've ever owned, with the possible exception of "Victory At Sea" (MAC). Instead of making you walk the plank; it seizes up and makes you hard boot your machine. Graphics are quite good, although the characters you interact with are a disappointment. They shuffle around town like the little figures that come out of a clock -- for the most part stiff and right on track. After reading reviews for "Corsairs," which I do not own, it appears that "Sea Dogs" borrows heavily in terms of UI and overall game context (or vice versa). It IS fun, but the fun quickly turns to frustration as you try to follow the storyline, which, in my opinion, is shallow and even intrusive. The gameplay requires you to interact with various characters to "resolve" the story; there is not enough in the way of freebooting it around the sea according to your whim to see what's where unless you're already on a "quest." There are too many loopholes in the story, and no matter how many times I played it (before I uninstalled it and banished it to the Land of Misfit Toys), none of the plot's loose ends ever really came together. The irony is, it doesn't take you too long to guess how they are SUPPOSED to come together; the story is just adolescent. Basically the characters present nothing new to you whenever you talk to them, except in cases where what you say to them advances the game story beyond what you've actually accomplished in the game. In other words, your dialogue options sometimes presuppose that conditions in the game are met, even if they aren't. If the game thinks you've done what it requires you to do to win, even if you haven't, why play? A final nitpick: the geography of the game appears to be absolute fantasy. I felt like the captain in "The Simpsons" -- never really goes anywhere, just sits around saying "Yar..." a lot. If you want to sail around the Caribbean or some such real-world environment, forget it. You spend a lot of time going back and forth between various fanciful island communities trading goods in a simple "buy low, sell high" economic market. You spend A LOT of time doing this to buildup your gold reserves, and it's very easy to get picked off by the AIs in doing so (although it is possible to better the odds with the Parthian Shot Strategy -- aye, the Parthian Shot, yar...)
Rating: Summary: What were these other reviewer's thinking? Review: I bought this game based on the enthusiastic reviews below, and now I have to wonder what these people were thinking. "Sea Dogs" is indeed 3 games in one. However, none of them is particularly complelling. They consist of: 1. A roleplaying game, which consists of walking around and asking people things. However you generally ask each person one thing, and they give you one response, so there's not much room for thinking. 2. A naval simulator, which is mildly interesting for the first couple of fights. However, since every fight is basically the same, this quickly becomes boring-- endlessly sailing in circles and lining up broadsides against your opponents. 3. A video game style fencing sequence that is simply annoying. It's ridiculously primitive compared to the martial arts style games on the market, and one has to wonder why it's even in here. Over all, there was nothing particularly compelling about the game play. The graphics are pretty, but how long can you stare at the waves and the storm clouds when the game itself is dry as toast? Also, the game is SERIOUSLY buggy, even with the new 1.4 patch installed and running. The game is completely incompatible with a number of video cards. So if you do buy the game, there's a modest chance that it simply won't run on your machine.
Rating: Summary: Great Pirates Game!!! Review: I bought this game on a whim and love it! The graphics are good for a 3 year old game. The ships rock and creak in the wavy sea and seagulls fly around. The key to starting the game is to avoid combat until you do some trading (BTW: Coffee sales for high price at Dead Island). Once I did this and amased enough money to hire a crew, I was able to fight pirates. Just dont take on more than you can chew. The gun battles are fun and you must use srategy to win, especially when you are outgunned (Buy Bombs!!). The NPC's give you information and quests. The voice overs are pretty good too. The game gives you the freedom to fight for Spanish, French, or English, but you will have to find where to get the letter needed to fight for them! I have dueled several times now and won over half of them! The key is to read the manual and talk to a local about sword fighting. The controls are simple and easy to learn. My only suggestion is to download the patch from Bethsoft.com before starting a new game, so that you have all the patches in! I have played for 15 hrs now and found no bugs yet!!
