Review: Oh my God

this game could have been awesome, but there are some bugs that get SO FRUSTRATING that, while playing, you suddenly realize you're not having fun anymore, but instead you are trying to get around all the problems to win that impossible dungeon battle out of sheer hatred for your overpower enemies and reckless game producers.

I have a LAWFUL GOOD cleric, worshipper of Pelor (a Neutral Good god) and he spontaneously casts INFLICT WOUNDS SPELLS!!!! WHAT THE HELL IS THIS???

I sure hope a patch is coming out. If it doesn't, damn it's gonna be a shame. The game just looks awesome... such a waste.

Summary: Best D&D based dungeon hack since Eye of the Beholder
Review: This game has the best combat Ive seen since the Eye of the Beholder series. If your a fan of Pencil and Paper D&D, you must own this game, hands down!

Summary: No Crashes... No gameplay either!!
Review: I have to agree with the previous review. After the Balder's Gate series (1+2+Throne of Bhaal) and the IceWind Dale set, this game is a disappointment. I have not experienced any crashes on Windows ME, but the bugs are just too frustrating. The scrolling of the screen is too slow. The comments made by the previous reviewer are spot on with regards to graphics, combat and character generation. I only gave 2 stars because the bugs prevent me from seeing more of the game. Anybody reading this should hold out for the patch first. The crashes must be due to Windows XP(extra problems!), but the bugs are very unprofessional for a first release. Come on guys, you cannot even complete first level quests due to bugs... how much beta testing does it take to discover that? Shame on you Atari. I remember TOE from D&D all those years ago, hence the interest. What a shame. Tis a few steps backwards from BG1+2, IWD1+2 and NWN.

Summary: Enjoyable in Between Crashes
Review: Not Bad, but Crashes

My initial view was skeptical, as the game seems unpolished. The interface for character creation was not intuitive, as you had to drag and drop text cells into other text cells to choose options. If that wasn't bad, I finally got to the portrait section, which is abysmal. There are a so few portraits, and the art quality is not very good. The portraits nowhere compare to the portraits in other D&D video games like Baldur's Gate.

Once I got started, especially once I got to the Temple, this game got really exciting. Interacting with evil villains, dungeon crawls, tactical combat. All of this is just awesome. I even have a freaking hill giant slaughtering all the units for me. But alas, the game keeps crashing. Maybe the hill giant takes a lot of processing power.... Sometimes these crashes are so bad; I have no choice, but to reboot Windows XP. This reminds me of the dark Win 95 days. There are some other weird bugs, where monsters appear in walls and are not approachable.

There are also a lot of little bugs that got annoying in regards to how the game implements the D&D, 3rd Ed. Rules: "Flat-footed" enemies get "attacks of opportunity", I cannot seem to surprise the enemy, even though my character attacks first before combat. Detect Magic, doesn't seem to detect magic, evil non-player characters seem to grab the loot first when searching bodies, even though they are on the other end of the screen.

I think that if you played NWN, IWD, or BG, some parts of the game may a disappointment. Once it gets started, the game picks up and gets really exciting. Because the game seems to have many bugs, I would hold off a little bit until patches come out, and feedback about the quality and stability is more positive.

Summary: More bugs than a termite's nest
Review: This is such a cool concept that I couldn't wait to play. Sadly, it's completely riddled with bugs. My favorite is when fighting types are penalized for using a weapon they are proficient with. My fighter (8th level, 18 strength, weap focus longsword) has a +8 bonus when it should be +13. Oh and a dwarf I made got the same penalty for using a dwarven waraxe. Come on guys.

Summary: If you like awesome tactical combat......
Review: The combat in this game is so deep you will need scuba gear. The game has wonderful graphics and the spell effects are grade A. Yes there are quite a few bugs, but a patch is coming later in October so I wouldn't worry about it. I have a 1GHz Athlon and with a 64 mb video card (Windows Me) and it runs decent, some slow up with lots of monsters on screen at one time. If you ever played the PnP version then it is a must buy! In summary, short on story but exceptional combat. (The adventure this game is based on was a hack'n'slash event, thus the computer version is also hack'n'slash).

Summary: Great rendition
Review: I have been a big fan of computer RPGs for years (Forgotten Realms, Wizardry, Ultima, Diablo etc.) and I have say this is an awesome recreation of the classic ToEE module. The level of character detail and the stunning graphics are amazing. Game play does get a bit sluggish (Im on a P4 1.8 w/ 500 MB RAM and 128 nVidia AGP) as the number of combatants increases and there are a few programming bugs (all should be curable with patches). This game is still well worth the ~$40 US and I would love to see the Slaver, Giants, Drow, and other classic D&D modules made with this engine also.

Summary: Bugalicious
Review: Well, just wait till the bugs are reduced (3 months or so should cover it) and by that time it will be half price.

This is the worst game I have ever played as far as bugs are concerned. I was crashing for 2 days straight because my barbarian was wearing a barbarian helm.. Go figure. I formatted and reinstalled my OS and all drivers, just to get to this realization.

Down with this system of release games, fix them later. Give us something we can play instead of making us test your games for you Atari and Strokia.

Summary: Wow is this game buggy!
Review: ToEE, like NWN when it first game out, is one of the most bug ridden games I've ever played. When switching areas, the game crashes to the desktop about every other time for me. I've got a fast computer too, and the performance on this game is way under par. Not to mention the real show stopper bugs like hired party members taking all the loot until they can't move.

However, I still give this game 3 stars. Character creation is excellent. I love their adaptation of pen and paper RPG's to the computer. You play a small sequence, then view a short cut scene where a DM like character narrates based on what choices you made and your party alignment. As far as plot and gameplay, ToEE is excellent. With a few patches, this game could be much more enjoyable though.

A few things I would like to have seen which won't be addressed with patch still exist though. I would definitely like to be able to zoom in during fights without dropping resolution. Being able to map the controls to different keys would be really nice too.

Why do all the RPG game companies try to sell us beta software? RPG game fans will buy anything that says D&D, five expansion packs, whatever they try to sell us. The least they could do is test their software before releasing it.

Summary: Unrealized potential
Review: I'm a big fan of CPRGs... I played all Baldur's Gate series and loved em... I even tried Pool of Radiance, but returned it the next day it was so bad.

This game falls somewhere in the middle... There are LOTS of bugs, but the basic design of the game is good... A basic dungeon crawl with nice graphics and kewl spell effects.. the user interface is ok once you get used to it.. There are some major problems with the current game however:

1. You can't escape combat if your guys are starting to die off... running is not really an option. (It takes forever and you can't exit to a different level - even if your standing right next to the stairs.)
2. When camping inside the dungeon, wandering monsters sometimes appear WITHIN WALLS! You can't get at them and they cant get at you, and if you get into combat mode your only option is to try and run away from them, one painful move per character at a time.. I've spent literally 20 minutes trying to get all my guys far enough away so that it exits combat mode.
3. There is a bug where the game will hang on one of my characters and cntrl-alt-delete is the only way out...
4. Game will sometimes exit completely when trying to move my party to another level.
5. Broken quests
6. Weapon bonuses dont appear as they are suppossed to.
7. Even running on a 3GHz machine with a GeForce video card, the scrolling stutters.
8. If I click to move my party to a different spot, sometimes the NPCs will stay in their current location, while the rest of the party moves away.
9. There is no custom AI scripting you can set for your characters. (Best you can do is set them to fight defensively, or cast defensively)

If you like dungeon crawls, and 3.5 edition DnD, you might still like playing despite all the problems... Too bad they didnt finish the game before it was released though..

Anyone know if there a new Baldur's Gate coming out soon?
