Summary: One of the most amazing games I have ever played.
Review: In Deus Ex, you play JC Denton, a nano-augmented agent for the United Nations Anti-Terrorist Coalition(UNATCO). Throught this game you quickly discover not all is as it seems, and that UNATCO is just a tool for a group called Majestic 12. One think that makes this game so great is the freedom. Your told to save hostages from a subway huh? Don't feel like it? simple, trigger the explosives and kill all the hostages. Problem solved. Every decision you make, being it as small as talking to an enemy before killing him, can effect the entire rest of the game. Also, above it stated a con to the game was dumb AI. Not at all true. Thats the freedom of the game! dont want to get overwhelmed by enemies? Sneak by! Dont like turrets? Hack the security system and have the turrets kill your enemies instead! The enemies sometimes will hear something and then dismiss it. This isn't stupuidity, this is ingenuity! By allowing you to sneak up on the troops, you can distinguish your character based on your personality. You can be modest, or selfish; sneaky or gun-crazed. Evil or good. Its up to you. Bottom line: Buy this game.

Summary: Outstanding game play
Review: If you like the find and shoot type game this is for you. Takes alot of power to run but is outstanding. It is like the Doom/Quake series however without monsters. It is built on conspiracy theories with the US goverment I.E. FEMA, Rowell and several others. The games outcome can change based on various paths you take during play. It has some minor low points such as slow loading and saving but well worth the wait. In fact it gives you time to recoup before going at it again...

Summary: This game makes "Daikatana" forgivable.
Review: Yep, it's that good. The folks at Ion Storm have showed us that they can make a good game (albeit with the help of Warren Spector). This game is great, encompassing, and an all-around life destroyer. I found myself playing well into the night, unraveling the mysteries and enhancing my character's abilities. The "unrealistic plot" which everyone complains about is getting bad press. Video games are supposed to have improbable plots. And besides, improbability makes the plots interesting and draws you into the game. Ok, a brief synopsis: (I haven't finished the game yet, so I can't tell you much. No spoilers will be given so read on) You are JC Denton, a bionically enhanced government agent working for UNATCO, an anti-terrorist branch of the US government. A deadly virus has swept the world and the state of the planet has fallen to shambles. Terrorists and criminal orginizations operate openly without fear, and governments battle like warring urban gangs. The only hope for protection is an antidote codenamed "Ambrosia" (The nectar of the gods). This stuff is in very high demand, so naturally it is only available to a select few. You fortunately have been vaccinated upon birth, so you don't have to worry about the nasty germs. Your brother Paul is a veteran in the agency, but soon he begins to act very strangely and distrustful. Conspiracies are revealed, intentions brought into light, and mysteries are unraveled. Throw in locations in Hong Kong, New York, and Paris and you've got a nice game environment. The game works by using a skill points system, not unlike the system used in Diablo and other RPG's. After exploring certain areas or completing goals you are rewarded with skill points that you use to enhance your ability in several fields. THese include sniping, computers, electronics, lockpicking, swimming, medicine, and weaponry. The real treat though, is the Nano-augmentation canisters. Throughout the game you'll encouter little blue vials which, through a medbot, can enhance parts of your body with cybernetic implants. This is where the free form of the game really shines. If you're a sniper, use the canister on your eyes and see farther, or even in the dark. If you are a stealthy character, enhance your legs to run faster and softer, or make them have more jumping power enabling you to scale tall fences. It's entirely up to you. All in all, Deus Ex is a great game, enjoyable from start to finish, with excellent voice acting, great locations, and most of all, IT'S FUN! Happy gaming.

Summary: Could This Be A Sleeper Hit?
Review: Okay, okay... it isn't a 'sleeper' by any deffinition, but with the monster hit, Diablo II, can ride the charts, and this is #85... well... that's just sad.

I've read many a review here at amazon and have read one that I'd like to point out here, the one near this review that gave the game 1 star. Ignore that review, s/he obviously knows nothing of games.

First... Warren Spector (designer, writer, messiah) is the best in the buisness (yeah, screw Ramero and Caremak (sp?)) and this game proves it.

Second... one of the few faults, load times. I've never waited 5+ minutes for a game to load. But: a) that's the fault of the modified Unreal engine, not the programmers b) the game's worth it.

Third... the game is endlessly fun to play, with intense replayability. You can (and occasionally have to) run and gun a bit, but there is usually another way around a situation, you can snipe out the guards and move on, you can avoid fighting all togethor by going through the vents, you can hack security and turn turrets on the guards, or even (occassionally) release a caged beastie to handle it for you. If this sounds alot like System Shock 2, that's because it is! But bigger and better (and with alot less pants peeing).

Fourth... unfortunatly on my meager TNT1 the game occasionally locks up, but the game's so worth it.

If you liked SS/2, Thief, or even Half Life you'll love this game!

I could go on and on (and I have), but what I'm getting at, despite a few system conflicts: what are you doing reading this, order it RIGHT NOW!

Summary: Deus Ex is not a good Machina!
Review: My take on the game as equaling or even bettering Half-Life and Opposing Force is this: Get real!

First of all, the game takes forever to load up each time you want to play it, and the same goes for saving anything -- which tells me that the programming team picked to write this game were definitely not the brightest bulbs in the box. I suppose it is hard to try and effect a good old cold war style brain drain from other more successful companies, like Sierra for instance. And Eidos simply did not get the bunch that were really on top of the gaming curve. Every gaming company wants to hire the best, if only to build an efficient footprint that will quickly get the game off the ground after launching it. But this game has to be at least worse for such transitions than even the more primitive games that came out six or eight years ago. And because DE requires at least a 333MHz system to drive it -- more like push it off a cliff -- makes it even more of a lame dog when it takes forever to transition itself into the next level of the game, in addition to the sluggish save and load times. This all forces one to then rate the level of sophistication of the software as being amateurish.

The control selection is also quite limited and cumbersome. Whereas in half life your right click mouse button and mouse wheel have a much more powerful range of control over objects, you don't get that here. Half-Life and Opposing Force also expertly solved the picking up of objects problem by simply running your character over the objects. Why can't we have that here? There is only one good thing I liked in this game, the ability of dropping objects. That's it.

The next irritating thing is that your character doesn't start off as a swift, efficient fighting machine. Instead you get a character that totters around at a fast crawl, like an old man, and is suffering from the DTs and various other attention deficit disorders when it comes to actually aiming a gun. To get the character tracking well, what you have to do is this: you are forced to acquire these proficiency modules and augmentation modules to make your weapons and feeble cyborg work well enough to fight a kindergartener. This lends the game an extra savory taste of tediousness from the word go.

There is simply also not the variety of interesting bad guys to shoot at. At least in Half-Life you get to shoot aliens and all sorts of cool critters that are sort of cute, funny and scary at the same time. Here it's just one dreary anonymous person after another. *yawnnnnn*

The ideological recurrent message is also illogical and lame. Here the character is given lots of killing weapons but then told by various liberal characters in the game to be a Pollyanna and only knock the enemy out, and not to kill them. Ridiculous! What a waste of time. We all realize just how contradictory management and policy is in a real government organization, but is it really an exciting environment to play in for a shoot-em-up game? Not really. And most free thinking individuals will not put up with working in a organization that contradicts itself and does not back up its players either. And it is hardly credible to think most gaming players playing this game consider themselves as anything other than free thinkers.

No, sadly DE simply does not track well in simulated or real time. It needs to go back to the debugging floor. I was hugely dissapointed in its performance, and really would like a full refund for this game.

Summary: A great mix of action, strategy, and fun.
Review: This is a great game, combining strategy, some atcion, and is on the verge of an RPG. I like the futristic world, and realiistic maps of the places they take place in. A great buy for a serious gamer.

Summary: A real gem, must buy
Review: I feel bad not giving this game five stars, it's certainly one of the best I've seen in a long time and I can't believe I haven't heard more buzz about it. I bought the game based on the other reviews here, and I have to say, they're right on target.

Deus Ex really delivers serious gaming fun. It's like a game with an X-Files-esque plot (without the aliens), Rogue Spear gaming (strategic FPS), and Soldier of Fortune(action-oriented FPS). It really delivers and gives the player the opportunity to take a balls-out, guns blazing approach or a more stealthy, sneaky method to get what you need done (either way, you get just as much skill points, so you're not penalized for not getting a maximum body count).

The graphics are great. Nothing particularly revolutionary (as with Vampire) but definitely nothing to complain about. Generally very smooth with lots of detail, nice lighting, good atmosphere (you really don't see this on a lot of the screenshots). The plasma gun really has a nice effect, as do the grenades, but when things blow up (like crates) it's just a bunch of polygons (yawn). I guess we can't expect all games to have the detail (and gore) of Soldier of Fortune.

There are a few holes in the plot (such as it's feasibility), but with a little willful suspension of disbelief, it's rather engrossing. (I've had more than my fair share of 5+/hour playing sessions with this puppy.) Travelling from New York to Hong Kong to Nevada, you'll see plenty of places and meet enough interesting characters to keep you going. I don't know if different responses to conversations give you significant variances in the plot, but it's interesting all the same--especially the different ways you can solve your missions.

I've become very picky in terms of the games I buy, I don't have a lot of time to play them and I don't have a lot of money to spend on them, so they've got to be good. This is one of those games I am delighted to have bought and -certainly- recommend to others.

The only reason this didn't get five stars is because of the unplausible premise in the plot and the lack of anything really ground-breaking in the realm of gaming (though, I'll admit, this is one of the best games I've ever seen at really having the feel of an authentic RPG.)

Summary: Poor A.I.
Review: Everything about this game is great except the artificial intelligence. At least in Unreal (same engine)the enemies did flips and tricks. Here the soldiers often get stuck, ping pong back and forth in a very low tech (ancient tech) way. Then, all at once they turn into superman and become hyper-agile and quick. Then you die. Oh well, it doesn't happen so often that I advise not to buy this game. It is way cool, but the A.I is weak.
