Rating: Summary: Satisfying to the core Review: I played it to the entirety and relished every part. I felt immersed in the characters and I was mesmerized by the detail and complexity in the world of Planescape. Torment was my first foray into this domain and I am not disappointed. The game taught me patience and perseverence, a far cry from the instant gratification of Quake and other bloody games of skill. The theme of self discovery and loss of innocence is almost beaten to death and used again and again, in many other works of creativity, but here it is presented in a somewhat unique manner. Nonetheless, is that not the quest we are all on? To seek our true destiny in this world? As a game, the proximity of the angle to the ground was comforting, and I have not seen that since, though I have played through Diablo and Baldur's Gate series. The selection of spells and their relevance in application was well done. However the character development was an even higher point. Truely groundbreaking and satisfying!
Rating: Summary: AWESOME GAME Review: This is probably the best game I've seen since Final Fantasy 3, which in case you are wondering absolutely rocks (bad graphics, though). This game is about 10X as good as Baldur's Gate II, even if the graphics weren't good. You can run, walk, and even talk to your friends. Very nice touch. As soon as they join you, they are under your control, but still people with reactions, beleifs, and so forth. I would definately advise it to any gamer who is serious about role-playing and gets tired with simple hack-and-slash adventures. Many of the quests are rewarding, but the quests are always tough. A definiten must for serious gamers. Cons Bad Graphics. Really tough quests. Not many other NPCs who join you. Pros Really tough quests. Best plot I've ever seen. Coolest Player Character I've ever seen. Most quests, in-depth plot, and little thought out twists ever. Everything that isn't a con, and has to do with RPGs This game is the best game I've ever played. Good plot, good ideas, awesome conversation, and all the stats (str, dex, con, cha, int, and wis) are used well.
Rating: Summary: Games are becoming Art Review: For any RPG or D&D novice, it takes a lot of the hassle out of playing an RPG. It also includes a story worthy of a Hollywood screenplay (or is that an insult). There is truly something going on in this game, it is only the second game to actually get me to care about the characters and story, the first being Grim Fandango. A must buy.
Rating: Summary: Some Advices Before Buying This Game Review: If you like killing many monsters, killing and killing and killing, just like in diablo and diablo 2; or if you usually play RPGs with only one character for more experience, then it is not a game for your taste. What makes torment a great game is the interactions between your group members, quests (that many of them dont even involve killing), and wonderful reflection of the planescape universe. If action is more important for you than non-killing quest experience, if you easily get bored of long text dialogues (some of them dont have anything to do with the storyline, but very helpfull to understand the planescape universe if you had no experience with it before), then buy ice wind dale or diablo2 expansion. Ice Wind dale involves linear story line, much less interaction with npc s, more monsters and more experience. What may be a con-pro for this game? 1- It shows its age. Its been about two years since the release of the game, and although it uses the same graphic engine with icewind dale and baldurs gate2, it is not advanced as they are in the graphics. Resolution is limited to 640x480, but because it had very well designed backgrounds and character models, you dont even notice the negatives. What makes it better than icewind dale and baldurs gate2 in graphics, in my opinion, is the way the npc s are designed. In baldurs gate and icewind dale, if you have a thief character for example, unless you buy a different armor it looks like the rest of the thiefs in the town. While in torment each npc that can be added to your group, has its own design and sound. Believe me ,in baldurs, it really gets boring to hear the same voice from all mages while they are casting, while in torment your npc mages has their own voices. 2- slowing down bug: The game has a bug that, whatever your processor speed is, under some circumstances the game really slows down. 1.1 patch reduces much of it, but still happens sometimes. 3- POSSIBLE SPOILER! Map: Unless you reach the lower ward, you cant click on some place in the world map and go there. You have to run through the whole sigil to reach somewhere far away, until you complete about 1/3 of the game. It really gets boring sometimes. 4- Loading scenes: In baldurs 2 and icewind dale, loading times are reduced. Also in baldurs2, most of the time, entering a house does not need a load. Torment uses the unmodified version of the bioware engine and every time the environment changes, it loads from the cd. You may reduce the loading time by doing a full install, but there isn't an option for it in the installation screen. You have to manually copy some files from the cd s and do some editing in ini files. Go and check the black isle web site for that. 5- while playing, you feel that there is a living city around you. Npcs walk around, talk with each other, react when a fight occurs near them. Also for npc s in your group, you really feel that they have their own ideals, their own stories which are incredibly connected to your characters past. 6- Nameless One (you): It is the only reason enough to play this game. An amnesiac immortal, in search of his past and his mortality. As you learn more about him and how he caused the things that others called fate, it becomes harder to quit playing. Suggestion to hardcore gamers: If you want to get much more pleasure from the game, before playing it read something about planescape universe, bloodwar, sigil and lady of pain. You will catch some small details about nameless one's past and understand much better what happens to him at the end of the game (many people dont understand the purpose of the ending demo) and will have increadibly more enjoyable playing time than an average gamer has. Play it as a fighter than as a mage, they are much different in playing. Whatever class you choose to play, always create a character of wis:18 and int:18, even if you are a fighter. Torment is mostly a non-combat rpg and these attributes determine your exp level, amounts of memories you recall(and you learn much more abaout his past)and the number of dialogues that appear during the speech. You gain attribute points as nameless one remembers his past, so a low str or con is not a problem for a fighter, also dont forget that you are already an immortal. :) Buy it, it is an incredible game.
Rating: Summary: Wow, what an experience!! Review: I just finished this game after a long time playing it. I haven't really played any RPG's before, but I had heard good things about this game, and it was at a bargain price, so I said "what the heck."What a lucky, lucky man I am. This game is simply marvelous. The writing (both storyline and dialogue) is simply outstanding. You really start to care for your character (the Nameless One) and his companions. You almost feel his pain when he gets hit, and you can certainly sympathise with his frustration as his past eludes him., yet feel his determination to find out what he's missing. The companions are more than one-note characters. They are almost three-dimensional, with pasts, motives that may differ from yours and things that they may be keeping from you. They are all related to you in some way, and it's really fascinating to watch the story unfold. The graphics are suitably dark to fit the tone of the game, yet they are very well rendered. You can almost feel the heat of the Outlands and Baator. The city that you start in, Sigil, is almost claustrophobic (and yes, that's intentional). Everything works. I can't think of a single thing that annoyed me in this game. Maybe the pathfinding at times, but that's easily fixed by not clicking on a space too far ahead of the party to get them to go there. You can't expect them to find their own way back in a cavern where there's lots of tunnels. I did that once on accident, and they decided to go through the territory I was retreating from to get where I was telling them to go. Needless to say, I reloaded a save game there. :-) Anyway, buy this game if you have any interest in FRPG's. You don't even have the money excuse, because it's so cheap. Buy it. Play it. And then realize that, as good as some of the other games you're playing are, there is something that tops even those.
Rating: Summary: Amazing Review: The title basicaly says all you realy need to know about this game. But as this is a review I feel I should say more.... I was rather dubious about buying and playing this game... but I was off work ill, with little money and a lot of time on my hands. I was looking for a game that would take a lot of playing... I found this in a bargin bucket for a couple of pounds so thought what the hell.... why not. Rarely have I ever been so glad that I gave into that boredom and bought this game.... It is simply astounding... it did take me about 25 - 30minutes to get into it then I was hooked.... I had to be dragged away from my computer screaming to be forced to eat and sleep before rushing back to see what else was in store for the nameless one, or what funny thing Morte would say next, or anyone of a thousand things that made this an amazing game. I would honestly say that I am more of a hack n slash Role player than a thinking one. I hate those "quest" games like Monkey Island where you have to do x to get y, then place y in c and h will happen that allows you to get to the next level, they drive me insane and i give up after about 15min usualy. Torment isn't like that... everything is logical, you are pointed in the right direction all you have to decide is when you want to do it, OH and how you to choose to do it.... this is very important as it completely changes what happens to your character, who he is and what he becomes. I could go on for hours saying how great this game is but I ain't going to.... As you will have noticed if you look at all the reviews here everyone loves this game... so just go out and buy it... its dirt cheap now its been released on budget and I promise you.. YOU WILL BE HOOKED.
Rating: Summary: a true RPG: great story, great characters, cool locations Review: I wasn't really excited about the game at first. But I found that the escape from the mortuary was just a tutorial: the real stuff was ahead. I got really emersed in the story and found myself talking to characters for hours on end, not because I wanted to earn some XP, but really because I was interested, I wanted to learn more of this strange world, I wanted to know about Sigil, the Planes, my lost memories, my destiny. I didn't play the game for the combat. I had choosen to be a warrior, but I found myself assigning more and more points to wisdom and intelligence, to improve my dialog choices and regain more memories. I played it for weeks on end, exploring every dialog option, trying everyting, just to find out more about the strange places I found myself. After such a great game, I found the final showdown a little disappointing, but, as I sayd - its not all about combat. It didn't stop me from playing it again a year afterwards. This game isn't my second all-time favorite for nothing! Get this game....
Rating: Summary: I agree, this really should be considered literature! Review: Planescape: Torment is one of the great CRPGs of our time...it's gameplay draws you in to a world of extremely real characters, with their own desires, ambitions, goals, and reactions (much like Shakespeare's works, famous for their depth). The game is solved through clever thinking and paying attention to the story, rather than the typical hack, chop, and slash of other RPGS...(Coughing fit that sounds suspiciously like laughing) How can we call most other RPGs (I.e. Diablo II) RPGs after we have witnessed this? There is still plenty of combat (not to mention beautiful graphical animations) for those that still cling to the old "RPGs". But the focus of this game is the immersive story, playing it is like reading a good book. What is most enjoyable about this game is not getting better and better weapons and stronger and stronger spells (I beat the game using non-magical weapons) but that the point of this game is the advancement of a non-linear story that envelops you. This game should be taught in high school English classes, it would add a lot of fun to the mix! =D In short, if you are one of those quirky, weird players (like me) who enjoys a game that drags you into the storyline and imprisons your attention in a flexible cage of iron plot, this is a game for you...and contrary to what a lot of people say, it does NOT take a game guide to beat the game, just enough neurons to bang together.
Rating: Summary: My God, What a Game! Review: If you are a person who really enjoys the rollercoaster of a really great RPG, then Planescape: Torment is for you. I just finished it, and towards the end of the game I actually started to cry! This game is that engrossing and touching. It makes several statements about the meaning of life and death, while leading you like a lamb toward the character's mortality. I must admit, I got a lot of help from the downloadable walkthrough from Gamespot. Without it, the game would have been, most probably, very frustrating. As it was, I spent more hours than I wish to count in front of my computer on the edge of my seat trying to solve a mystery or kill a particularly difficult beastie. WARNING: Do not buy this game unless you have a good deal of time on your hands, 'cause you won't want to quit once you get started. Warning 2: You can only save when there are no hostile creatures nearby, so towards the end of the game, be ready to go the distance. What else can I say? I have played a good number of adventure games (Longest Journey and Sanitarium) and Baldur's Gate (which is surprisingly very similar in game playing and controls). In none of those game hours was I so thoroughly engrossed, moved, enlightened and entertained as I was with Planescape. Some of the themes are very adult (...regarding...death and suffering) so I wouldn't reccomend this for anyone pre-teen. So, anyway, just buy it...
Rating: Summary: The Best... Review: I finished this game over a year and a half ago, but decided to buy it again for fun. Playing through again is like rereading an excellent novel. Graphic are great, sound is excellent, and the story is fantastic! The game is really a work of art. If you want an incredible adventure, this is the game to buy.
