Summary: Too many bugs to count
Review: A good game but way too buggy. There are so many glitches that the game is almost unplayable. Atari should be ashamed for relasing such an untested, unfinished game. Their technical assistance is nonexistent and the game's bulletin board is deluged with disappointed customers. Atari has lost my trust. I will never buy another game from such a shoddy company again.

Summary: I agree, unfinished, unpolished, untested
Review: Most of the crash and instability glitches come in the last third of the game so it presents itself fairly well for at least a couple dozen hours of gameplay.
This also tends to leave a positive impression with many people that write reviews before the progress to the end -- they havent experienced the worst yet. Still, having seen the worst, and having spent hours reading the unofficial support forms for answers, I still like this game and await a patch. In good conscience I can not give ToEE a good rating however.
If there was a catagory for rating the publisher, ATARI, I would give them ZERO stars because they unprofessionally pushed this product out the door without beta testing it.

Summary: A Great Flash Back Game
Review: I'm going to go against the grain of most of the previous reviews and say that I really love this game. If you've ever played AD&D (any version) then I believe that you'll enjoy this game very much. Even if you have never played AD&D, this is a great game to learn about it!

I will concede that this game needs a patch. BUT...I do not agree that it is as buggy as previous reviews claim. I play alot of computer games and I have never played a game yet that didn't need a patch after its initial release. So I think the claims of "not finished" are incorrect. I have close to 100 hours play time on this game and have only experienced one crash. I've experienced alot more crashes on other games, so while I concede it could use a patch, I do not believe it is as dire as some claim.

The visual aspects of the game are simply stunning! The detail is rich and beautiful. The visual effects when casting a spell are grand! This far over shadows the fact that ever little dagger +1 doesn't have its own personal history. I think that is trivial when compared to the stunning visual display.

The game also fallows the origonal Temple of Elemental Evil extremely well. I DMed that module many times in my teen years so I know it well.

The combat is straight forward and I do not find it cumbersome. The "wheel" that comes up on your character to choose options is very easy to use, and you do not have to access it for every swing of the sword either. Usually I use it for a "charge attack" at the beginning of combat, but never use it again unless I cast a spell. Even then it is still easy.

I highly recommend the game. Its fun and very addictive. I've been playing it like a mad man. It is great right now and when the patch comes out (its only a week or two away at the time of this writting) it will only be that much better.

You'll love it!!!

Summary: Good Idea, Poor implementation
Review: If you are considering buying this game I would strongly urge you to hold back on your purchase. This game is laden (not the bin type) with bugs which give you numerous CTD errors. Not to mention that Troika and Atari are now having a lover's spat on who's responsibilty falls where. Please do yourself a favor and look elsewhere for your RPG fix.

Summary: Too buggy to play
Review: I wanted so badly to like this game. I love D&D and the game at times can be fun, but it is simply unplayable. This is my first ever review on here and I hate that it is a bad one. I would not advise anyone to buy this game. I would say stay away and do not touch when you see it on the shelf. Others have said wait for the patch. I do not even know if that would help. I have had more crashes playing this game for about a week, then I have had in my entire life of using computers. I cannot say it strongly enough, stay away from this game. If there were negative stars I would give them to this game. This game is still in EARLY Beta, unfortunately they released it as such.

Summary: Could be great !?!
Review: The game is the truest adaption of pen and paper D&D I've ever seen, and I've played just about all of them. The use of turn based gameplay does not slow the game down at all and adds a whole new level of strategizing to the D&D computer game genre. All that being said, the game is buggy. There are enough problems to seriously detract from gameplay and the documentation leaves a lot to be desired. Many aspects of the interface are not obvious (eg metamagic use). My sincere advice is to wait until a patch or two has been released and then buy this product. Once the bugs have been squashed TOEE will be one of the best D&D PC games ever.

Summary: Great in theory, but needs fixing
Review: Just like all of the other reviews this game needs a patch. My issue is that, unlike D&D rules, it takes 11 days for my level 2 characters to rest until healed, it should only be 8 hours. And when I try to rest, monsters are spawned outside of the area of fighting (like inside the walls). They can't be killed, but you can't move as a group or rest because you are in battle. This does render the game unplayable. Everything else is great and once they get the patch working, I strongly suggest buying it. But right now, do NOT buy the game, because it won't work enough to do anything.

Summary: Wait for the Patch
Review: This game is unplayable in it's current form...it might be good once they get it out of beta (maybe alpha) testing, but I'm sorry I spent any money on it before it was ready. In the future I intend to stay away from all Atari Products

Summary: If Only It Worked, Sigh...Wait for the Official Patch
Review: The other reviews have covered the situation well.

This title has so much potential. The combat system, turn-based, an implementation of D & D rules are a great starting point. The problems, however, far outweigh any joy derived from playing.

Most problematic is the fact that game does not work. Many have experienced the game crashing to desktop, locking up, or freezing for over ten minutes (yes, some have apparently waited). After many reloads, my journey through the temple finally became unplayable. No matter what I do, the game crashes.

There are numerous bugs, in the rules. In other words, the 3.5 rules did not make it into the game correctly, even differing from how they are described in the comprehensive manual.

A patch is on its way. Nevertheless, I would definitely suggest waiting for it and reading the forums at Atari before buying TOEE, to make sure it works. Otherwise, and most unfortunately, it is not worth the investment

Summary: Buggy, problematic, and addictive as heck!
Review: Okay, so this game got pushed out the gate a bit on the early side, but despite some quirky behavior (e.g., crashing to desktop if your party uses the World Map while a bard's singing, monsters spawning inside walls, ranger's entangle spell working a bit TOO well, etc.), I've found this game to be an addictive squad-level tactical dungeon crawl where I've managed my fledgling party through some utterly hairy fights. On one hand, this game requires a much longer attention span than what I was accustomed with Diablo II, but on the other hand, the party development and melee combats make for some rewarding gameplay.

I suspect the diehard D&D-ers may balk at the questionable and/or buggy implementation of the pen&paper rules, but for someone whose last D&D rulebook was the early 80's AD&D Dungeonmaster's Guide, I'm still finding ToEE an enjoyable experience.
