Rating: Summary: The Multiplayer JUST DOESN'T WORK! Review: So I figured it was just me... maybe I hadn't read the instructions well enough, maybe my computer was messed up...But there were 50 people on GameSpy (Civ III's authorized multiplayer site) and not ONE of them could figure out how to get the game to run without either crashing the software or getting errors... I'm not saying it wasn't stable... I'm saying IT WOULDN'T WORK! (Note that I had downloaded the latest patch - 1.04f already - before even TRYING to play.) Maybe the game is just to complex to run multiplayer... if you want to be frustrated, you can do it for much less than the $ price tag. (Also note that GameSpy is FAR inferior to other sites, i.e. Zone, which I blame on Firaxis. For example, some juvenile user was demeaning just about every user and their interface has no "ignore", no "report" and no support at all.)
Rating: Summary: Greatest XP ever! Review: Civ III PTW is an incredible value for your money as it adds 8 new civs, several new units, a few new city improvements and wonders, a bunch of extra tile sets and scenarios, and it even adds multiplayer to boot! All eight of the new civs are extremely interesting and only have me craving the next XP. Well done Firaxis!
Rating: Summary: Usefull but expensive. Review: I wrote a review of this pak a few months ago, and was a bit overwhelmed by the inability of the publishers to get the multi-play portion working. Now thats it a few months later, I have managed to cough up 2 more stars, as i really like the extra civs. Online play is better, but it's still a slow playing game, so elimination seems to be the only choice of play unless you are sick with mono and have a spare 48hrs to play. I've been playing civ3 relgiously now for allmost 2 years and still think it's the greatest game of all time, but I think 'Atari' (wutever) hyped it up to be sound better than what we got.
Rating: Summary: Civ 3 Play the World is an unstable, laggy, bugfest Review: Absoluety abysmal code. The game does not work - the lag is incredible even with my cable modem and the game is so unstable I've not been able to "play" for more than 15 minutes without a crash. It is the worst bugfest I've ever seen. If you read this review and don't believe me, check the online gaming websites. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.
Rating: Summary: Best Strategy Game just got better! Review: As a veteran of more hours of Civ3 than my wife cares for, I can honestly say that this expansion pack vastly improves the game. The new factions, new improvements and units, not to mention the many ways to play multiplayer ... this is a solid hit, an impressive upgrade to an all-time classic, and sure to provide hours of enjoyment. Kudos to the coders in Owings Mills, y'all rock.
Rating: Summary: Great Addon Review: I just got this game from EB, and its quite an incredible game! You can play as many different civs, and have leaders such as Genghis Kong, or however you spell it =/ . The real feature of this game, though, is the multiplayer. I think that the game is well worth the thirty dollars. The only gripe I have had about the game is that there is a bit of server instability, but this happens with every game. Once people get more servers up, this will be a very good Playing environment, and it will inspire other similar games to walk in their shoes. It is good that someone has taken the balls to step into the multiplayer world with a turn based game. Some people argue about the multiplayer addon that it should have been added on first. Now, there are a few main aspects you should consider before saying this: If they had included the multiplayer addon in the first place, we wouldnt even HAVE civ3 until now. They needed to see, also, if the game was successful enough to take online. They dont want a game they bombed on with million dollar servers running, and only, like, 3 people on the servers at once do they? We needed to get used to the gameplay. This civ game is the game, that, for some reason, has the most newibes join in. Because of this, newbies and experts alike must learn and adjust to the new gameplay features that were not included in civ2 and call to power. And the last reason, they need to make money some how. I mean, Turn Based games dont sell for that much, although this game has sold A LOT of coppies, but why not sell even MORE by making a BOX set for example that includes both versions of civ3? It will raise their sales for sure! Lastly, others argue that this multiplayer addon completely changes the gameplay, and, in other words, ruin it! I COMPLETELY DISAGREE! Take many other games, like Return To Castle Wolfenstien, for example. The multiplayer and singleplayer games were COMPELTELY different. The style of gameplay was different, and the multiplayer had ZERO connection to the single player game! A very good reason for this addon is to add more styles of gameplay, which this addon very happily and luckily does. I mean, civ3 is boring now, after playing it day after day for a year straight. Good thing that I have a change in gameplay! Now I will be playing this game for ANOTHER year until civ4 comes out :) All in all, this is a VERY good addon, and any civ fan should buy this. And if you dont play civ, now's the time to get started. Hope this review helped! ~Andrew
Rating: Summary: Multiplayer is good idea, but is SLOW Review: I Bought this the other day, expecting to play multiplayer. I did end up playing but not after first downloading a patch, and several tries. No big deal though. I was horrified the first time I played it. It is so slow. It takes probably 10 seconds just to select a unit and move them one turn. It took me over an hour to play about 32 turns. My computer is not slow. I really think that what they have for Multiplayer is great, but until they speed it up (somehow) I wont play Muli. You may still want to buy it for its added features, such as additional units and civs, but without playing Multiplayer because of speed, the price is a little steap. Overall the Multilplayer really outways any goodthings about this game, since that is basically the whole point of the expansion pack. Buy it if you want, but if its just for Multiplayer, hold off until improvements are made!
Rating: Summary: It's a good add-on. Review: I really like this add-on. Yes, it should have been stuff added in the original game BUT gamers should realize that it costs money to program the near perfect game. If companies don't charge for "add-ons" then we can't expect newer versions of our games and entirely new games in the future from these companies. We'll be stuck with terrible games from companies that are just trying to make a quick buck and won't support the game properly. It's a good add-on at a fair price and makes a great game even better (even in single player mode)!
Rating: Summary: A Giant Stride Backwards Review: As the average age of those who are supportive of this deploreable act happens to be <12 years old, I can excuse them. After all, you were too young to remember Civ 2. In Civ 2, airbases and a powerful editor were available from the beginning. The game had far less bugs (Play the World already recieved its first patch-on the same day it was released!), and special features such as AEGIS Cruisers having anti-aircraft abilities (such as in real life) and pikemen having anti-horsemen abilities. Then there was firepower-no longer would modern units lose to extremely lucky ancient spearmen, a problem that had plauged Civ 1. However, this was inexplicably removed from Civ 3, and now I could rant on for hours about the time the HOPLITE defeated my MECHANIZED INFANTRY! Not to say that Play the World doesn't have a few redeeming qualities. Regicide, capture the flag, and the new civs should prove interesting. But even this is tempered by weaknesses. Why the Viking Berserker has as much attack value as a WWI infantry unit is beyond me.
Rating: Summary: Not what it was supposed to be! Review: I bought this game expansion as soon as it was released and now I'm sorry I did, for it turned out to be a total waste of time and I have already uninstalled the game from my computer and returned it...OK, the single player mode works perfectly and it was nice seeing some new faces (eight to be exact) among the world leaders, though I would have expected the Celts to be listed amoung the barbarians, not as a new civilization. Also, if you are a Muslim, you might have been offended to find the Arabs and their holy cities (Mecca and Medina) represented, since only Muslims are allowed in those cities and the idea that they may be subject to conquest or destruction by enemies would thus be blasphemous to any Muslim. But the most troublesome aspect of the game is that the multiplayer mode simply DOES NOT WORK!!! Every time I tried to join a game online, the game crashed, and every time I tried to host a game, I found that I was the only player that got in, with not even any AI opponents to fight! How could Firaxis have screwed up so badly when the original Civilization III was such a great hit???...
