Rating: Summary: Good game Review: EQ, but with the boring parts taken out and some new frills added.
Rating: Summary: Serf discovers class war means more than hating the rich Review: While you may envision Camelot as being a white-washed castle of delight, I discovered my gaming experience to be more typical of the serf whos arch enemy is the contents of the bed pans that villagers carelessly toss out their windows. I started this game with a bright future, one in which any number of swashbuckling careers involving exciting adventures with maidens to rescue filled my imagination. I quickly found my true Camelot existance to be filled with wrestling rats and other vermin for modest scraps of bread. Not only that, I was forced to avoid the wrath of the various wealthy warriors and priests that would stomp by while insulting me for my lack of suitable clothing. Let me explain, with Winter approaching in this terribly cold country (camelot on TV always looked like it was an eternal spring, I cry false advertising), I had to get the easiest obtainable clothing item to warm me, which was a nice cotton midwife dress I found in an alley. Well let me tell you, that was obviously the wrong thing to do. The people were more judgemental than a Southern Baptist convention and I quickly discovered that even poor sods like me were subject to brutal gossip. I heard frequent jeers like, "look at the little girl, she's covered in urine, is that the best perfume your mother could give you" followed by frequent laughter. The other poor fellows like me weren't much help either as they tended just to mindlessly follow me around, but never seemed interested in helping me kill vermin or find scraps of food. The game is advertised as "the DARK age of Camelot" and they weren't kidding. I found the average traveler to be ignorant of most cultural things, and the libraries there were to be abhorred! Even though I had a nice dress, I was filthy and despite my attempts at begging, I couldn't find anyone to let me use their bathroom facilities to clean up! If you are of noble birth and can dress in the latest plate mail fashions, you'll fit right in. If you're cursed to be a poor man like me looking for a chance in the world, then you're better off in Gaul.
Rating: Summary: Good game, but not perfect Review: If you are looking for a game that will keep you interested over a long period of time, this could be it. However, if you are easily annoyed by minor problems, or are looking for a wide-open RPG, this game isn't it--at least, not yet. You may want to wait a few months until the game has had a chance to mature. And if you are looking for a first person shooter, this game isn't it and, I hope, won't ever evolve into one. This is an online only game and requires that you pay an ongoing fee (about $12 a month) to play it. For this reason, the game doesn't have an "ending." You are supposed to just keep playing it indefinitely. The danger here is that the developers of the game will find ways to waste your time, frustrate your ambitions, etc., in order to keep you playing. Some of that does happen in DaoC. For example, the fastest way to get from one spot to another in the game is on a horse. But when you purchase a ride on a horse, you don't immediately show up at your destination. You do literally have to ride on the horse (with nothing to do) for 5 or 10 minutes. Of course, if you decide to walk instead, it will take 5 times as long.... The game also hasn't quite decided what it is. It isn't a shooter, as PvP is one of the last things available. But it isn't a role playing game either. Some aspects of RPG are there, but some have been intentionally disabled. E.g., you can be a trader or a craftsperson, making your living outside the combat arena. But you can't really be a hunter or fur trapper, as creatures stop dropping loot once they are no longer strong enough to represent a threat to you. Some problems may be corrected over time, such as the lack of an automap or minimap. There are a number of such gaps/problems. E.g., if you want to perform tasks/quests to gain experience, you will need to hunt around for someone to give you a task. Most of the time, the answer is "come back later." I've spent hours looking for someone who could hand me a task. If you need directions on how to find an NPC, in order to complete a quest, you must ask a guard. If you ask a sentry, or any other NPC, they won't know. Only a guard knows that?! And when you get a task, be sure to write down the location you're heading to. The auto-notes feature doesn't retain this information. The documentation is weak, and as yet there isn't much on the internet to fill the gaps. E.g., my character has lost Quickness points, but no one I've met, no site I've visited has any idea how to get those restored. The simple answer "visit a healer" doesn't work. Apparently a specialist is required? In summary, I have a low tolerance for things that waste my time or annoy me. So far, I am still playing DaoC, which says a lot for the underlying gameplay and--to some extent--the potential the game has to evolve into something great. Because I do notice that my time gets wasted and that certain things annoy me when I play.
Rating: Summary: Ex-Uo,EQ Fan...surprizingly! Review: Camelot is a true delight to play..Not only a great story..awesome adventure(no orcs for a change) and graphics that will take your breath. I have dial up and ISDN and even with dial-up networked I experience very little lag...Wow! what a change..I have been back to UO and EQ and the lag at both make me want to spit! For me it is Camelot..until Shadowbane arrives! My family has 4 accounts of each of these games and our PC's seem to only play Camelot at this time...The Game Junkie!
Rating: Summary: Everquest should be jealous Review: This game not only has amazing graphics, but the essential part of eq which I feel was player interaction has taken a new level. EQ was one of the best for getting to know other players and interacting a virtual world. DAoC guides you and helps you generate friends and get to know an entire realm of players who play together with a common goal. It player interaction is amazing and in almost everyway inhances the positives from Everquest and got rid of the annoyances such as (I used to sit in front of a pond fishing for hours just so I get get a skill high enough to survive) very boring but I had to do that just to get on with the game and interact with others) Anyone who says this game (...) has another agenda other. They must be getting paid by Everquest or something.
Rating: Summary: Finally a MMORPG worth the time! Review: I have been a "gamer" for over 20 years, playing everything from AD&D to Zork. I have spent years playing MMORPGs, including Ultima Online, Asheron's Call and Everquest, so I believe I have an excellent grasp of how Dark Age of Camelot compares to other games of this type. Without a doubt, DAoC is the best MMORPG currently available and I highly recommend it. From the stunning magical effects, and the heraldic "coats of arms", down to the breath-taking scenary, the graphics are simple awesome. The entire concept of the game featuring it's Realm to Realm struggles {the "us versus them" philosophy) and the historical background incorporated into the game, truly sets this game apart from the others, and adds to the game's addictive nature. Though DAoC is not "perfect", it has more going for it than it's competitors, including a programming/support staff that actually LISTENS to the players and IMPLEMENTS new concepts and bug-fixes in a very expeditious manner, unquestionably faster than UO, AC or EQ. What more do you want? A truly great game with a great support team! 'Nuff said!
Rating: Summary: Wonderful Game Review: I played EQ for about 3 months this summer, and then my friend who introduced me to it was a Beta tester for DAoC, and tol me to buy it. Being the RPG lover that I am, I obeyed and have been playing it. Graphically? EQ can't compare, unless the new expansion (which I've not yet seen) does some SERIOUS overhaul and redoes the 3D system. Spell graphics are better, movement is better, etc. Game plot/social set up? I would put EQ ahead, I think. For instance, the thing that came to me first was the automatic ability in DAoC to swim. EQ you had to learn it as a skill (that was the first way *I* died, in fact). I liked the inventory setup better, the more limited space you had. I think in DAoC it's about 40 items (give or take a few depending on weight) that you can hold, which seems unrealistic. All in all? They're both great, I now own both with the new EQ expansion on the way. If only the two of them could combine somehow to create the EQ plot with the better DAoC graphics. My opinion: Buy this game, and if you have the money buy EQ as well.
Rating: Summary: Very Disappointing. Review: This game turned out to be a huge disappointment. All of the great reviews are by people who just got the game and are still caught up in the "wow" factor and newness. After playing for over a month, I found this game to be no different than Diablo II or other hack and slash. It has the same useless "leveling treadmill" and it gets very tedious and boring, very fast. Before you waste money on this game read about it on all the message boards and see what the thousands of disappointed customers have to say first. Don't believe the hype and all the "WOW, this game rocks" reviews, as those people are still new to the game. You are much better off staying with your current MMORPG. If you are new to MMORPG's, Asheron's Call and Ultima Online are much more "new player friendly."

I started this game with a bright future, one in which any number of swashbuckling careers filled with gold chests to discover and maidens to rescue were seemingly at my fingertips. I quickly found my camelot existance to be filled with fighting rats and various other vermin for scraps of bread as I avoided the wrath of the various wealthy warrior and priest classes that would stomp by glaring at my lack of suitable clothing. Even though I had a nice dress, I was filthy and despite begging random travelers, couldn't find someone to let me use their bathroom facilities to clean up! If your rich and can dress in the latest plate mail fashions, you'll fit right in. If your a poor man like me looking for a chance in the world, then your better off somewhere else.
Rating: Summary: This Game is Great! Review: I have played EQ the majority of my life and this game is far better. Alot of people are giving this game bad reviews because they are upset everyone is leaving everquest. this game beats everquest in gameplay, graphics, lasting appeal, and most importantly lag. This game is alot more fun than everquest and people who say it isnt wont be able to give you an answer besides it is the "same" as everquest. if it is the "same" as everquest, why give it a one star rating?
