Rating: Summary: Short Single Player/below par maps/buggy Review: I would have to rate Unreal Tournament as the game that got me interested in gaming. It has never been off my hard drive. However Unreal Tournament 2003 seems more like Quake three in many aspects except while Quake 3 had a lot of re-play value I have hardly played UT 2003 since I got it. I hate to say this, but the game is dull. I also want to protest the shoddy way in which the game was shipped. It came in the old-fashions "big" cardboard box, which in this day and age everyone knows is just wasteful. The box design is ordinary to say the least. The game disc's themselves weren't solidly anchored inside the box, and they were just in plain white paper sleeves, not jewel cases or preferably DVD-style cases. The manual was printed in a pinkish text on white so I could hardly read it, was very short, and contained errors. Worse still the key for the game for some reason was stuck on the back of the booklet, not on the (non-existent) jewel case as is customary. I can see that many people will probably lose or throw the useless booklet away, and thus lose their key. Obviously Epic have a deal with Prima to sell their game guide, but really, at this price, I expect the game to be packed well in jewel cases with at least some effort made to create a decent installation and game guide booklet. Not good enough, Epic!
Rating: Summary: Don't bother pirating, it's a waste of your download time. Review: While bringing a technically revolutionary and visually mesmerizing engine to the light, UT2003 is unforunately cast to the same gameplay of Quake3, which is pathetically hackneyed and unoriginal--to be nice. More of a movie than a game, the only real reason to play this silly ripoff is to get a screenshot, as it is actually below the original UT. It's a bit hard to explain, but even though it's taking full advantage of your video card and taxing the hell out of your system, it doesn't bring the goods that other games nowadays have. Unreal Tournament 2003 is more of an update to the original than anything new, but you can't call it an update because this takes away more than it adds to--yes I know there is like 7 other modes of gameplay and I guess some new guns so the fun could potentially "never end", but try playing with any of those new features without missing the same feel of the original UT and you will see what I'm saying. The engine on the other hand is great. You'll see the UT2kQ3 engine in many future games, and it's currently in one of the best FPS games--America's Army; and will soon be in many more good games: Splinter Cell and Raven Shield. the name "UT2kQ3" was spawned after people started to see that it took Quake more as an influence than the original, and instead of progressing in to something new they just copied Quake and put a great engine on it. It's like a nice car, it looks pretty and has a lot under the hood, but you can't really drive it--it's only purpose is to look pretty and have a lot under the hood. It gets 1 extra star because it's purty.
Rating: Summary: Cool Game Review: I have never played Counter Strick but I have heard that it is more of a team based first person shoter. This game is great but it is more of a rush in and kill as many guys before you get killed. Also, after you die you can just come back. So it is really what you would rather expiernce. If I were you though, I would either wait until Unreal II or Counter Strick Condition Zero comes out. Bother look even better than this game.
Rating: Summary: Technologically sophisticated, but no mojo Review: Let me begin by saying I am a big fan of the original UT. I probably have over 2 gigs of levels, music and textures archived to CD. I was looking forward to this release with great anticipation, and now all I can say is "where's the beef?" True, the graphics are stunning and the player skins are great. The concept of Bombing Run (rugby for psycho killers) is cool. BUT THE GAME PLAY AND LEVELS ARE UNSATISFACTORY. The original UT had levels that were as much fun to explore as to play in. UT2003 levels are boring after only a few run-throughs and are much too small. Weapons look too much alike, with the exception of the rocket launcher, flak cannon and sniper rifle. Speaking of the sniper rifle - it's not even a rifle. The original rifle in UT was cool BECAUSE it was a little retro compared to the other weapons. Part of the fun of the original UT was getting yourself into a well-concealed position and dominating the gameplay from a distance. The new Buck Rogers rifle gives away your position every time you use it, making this impossible. AI appears somewhat improved in the new release, but this does not make up for the rather sterile overall feel of the game. As other reviewers have noted, the graphics look cool, but the game really doesn't play well except on a bleeding edge, high-end machine. Like others, I run through a mid-high level P4 with a GeForce2 Ultra, and even at middling resolutions, I have frame rate issues. I give it 1 star for gameplay alone, with a bit more for the spiffy graphics.
Rating: Summary: Great for LAN and online gaming Review: I run this game on a Duron 1.2 ghz PC with 320mb SDRAM and a Geforce 3 Ti200. Like other reviewers have said, the graphics are amazing, but that's not what makes this game good. Playing UT2003 over a LAN or online is what it's all about. The character taunts and voices can be quite amusing, overall sound including music is great, the weapons are decent, and the maps are well made, not too large but not too small. Another thing I like about this game (and the entire UT series) is the availability of bots. Sometimes I like to practice in a multiplayer environment without actually playing against real people, and bots are great for that. The overall size of this game is massive, so make sure you have plenty of hard drive space for it (at the very least 2 gigs). There are 3 CD's total.
Rating: Summary: Great graphics Review: I had a few comments on this game, mostly related to discussing the minimum requirements for the system, and how the game worked with those on my system. My system runs this game good but not great set on normal settings for most things. I have a system that is at the minimum requirement for RAM and processor speed, having 128M of RAM and a 650-MHz Pentium III processor. My video card is above the minimum for the system, an nVidia GeForce4 MX440 with 64 megs of RAM, but that just means it's actually a GeForce2, since they re-branded it. So I get some stuttering during intense death matches if I try to use any of the special effects like trilinear filtering, dynamic lighting, decals, coronas, or a high level of background, physics detail, or texture detail. If I run everything at normal detail levels and don't exceed 16-bit color and 640x480 resolution, I'm okay. I'm planning on upgrading to 1 gig of memory in the next week or so, so that should help. I used to play Quake III Arena and this is the best thing I've seen like that since it came out. As long as you have the minimum system requirements, which seem accurate based on my experience with my own system, you'll be okay. I have too slow a dial-up connection to have tried the online play feature, so I can't comment on that, but the death matches and other contests work great with just the computer controlling the other characters. Overall, this is a game with really beautiful graphics and fast action, especially if you use the 16-character limit, which I do. Maxing out this value doesn't seem to have as negative effect on performance as the other visual effects and makes for a much more exciting game.
Rating: Summary: A disappointment Review: UT 2003 was hyped to the stars ever since it was announced (late 2001) but it has failed to impact the way us UT fanatics hoped. The maps on the whole are quite samey and more positioned to show off the graphical capacities of the new game engine than to be fun to play long term. Some maps, like Plunge, cause any computer not made in the last six months to have a seizure. There are a lot of details put into maps to make them look pretty but there is no thought of the player model who just gets caught up on all the extra junk. (Speaking of player models, I haven't spoken to anyone who likes the "Space Hulk" clones.) Some old favourites have been re-modelled, like the once impressive "Facing Peaks" but as in this case, they have added too much detail till the map looks as ugly and tacky as Vegas. I would say save your money until this game comes down in price and is released with all the (many) patches that it needs and hopefully has a working editor that doesn't crash to the desktop every five minutes.
Rating: Summary: Unreal T. 2003 review Review: UT 2003-would be one of the best games our right now. If you played Unreal and Unreal T.(first ones) your a master at UT 2003, all you need to know is the combos and your the Unreal Master. This game could ALMOST get a 5 star, but it deserves a 4 star, why? The system requirements are way to high, you prob. want at least 256 ram not SD ram. Ddr or rd ram is recamonded. You want at least 1 ghz computer to get full satifaction, want at least a Geforce 2 Ti-after that you need the latest driver to play of the Nvidia cards. And if you cover all the specs. then UT 2003 will be your best friend. Best Graphics out now, and will be best until Doom 3 comes out. Fan of Unreal its a must get.
Rating: Summary: Intense action...when you can get it to work. Review: If you like first person shooters, this game is fantastic. I bought because of how much I liked the previous version. Unfortunately, I have never played this game without it crashing on me. I have upgraded to the latest patch (2166) and upgraded my video card to the latest driver. I have also installed the XP Service Pack 1 which has the DirectX 8.1b upgrade. I have every graphics setting set to the lowest setting possible. I am running a Pentium 4 2.53mhz with 512 megs RAM. It crashes all the time, telling me I may need to upgrade my DirectX driver. Sometimes it doesn't even start. I haven't started with support yet, but it's aggravating nonetheless that i should be having so many problems. I would stay away from this game. I know several people who own this game, they all have similar problems, but not as many. That's probably because they have newer graphics cards. In short, this game is really buggy.
Rating: Summary: Unreal is, well.... Unreal! Review: This is my favorite computer game of all time (and being a big gamer, that means that this game is a force to be reckoned with)! I love this game! The graphics are unbeatable and the Dolby Digital sound is superb. If you loved the original Unreal or any of the Quake games, then this game is for you. If you like any kind of shooter, this game is for you, too. The gameplay is flawless and you often forget that you are even pressing buttons and moving a mouse and feel as if you are in some strange world spectating people duking it out with futuristic weapons. The variety of weapons in this game is great, and each has its strengths and weaknesses (My personal favorite is the Flak Cannon!). The variety of game modes is impressive, ranging from your classic deathmatch to the new bombing run mode, which is what you'd get if a rocket launcher was standard equipment in the NFL! This game never loses its fun factor and continues to grow on you. I know that this one's gonna be hard to beat and will be at the top of my list for quite a while. If you like shooters, this is the perfect game for you. The graphics are superb, especially if you have a nice system to run it on- an old one doesn't do it justice. This is a must for a LAN party. This game will have you sitting at your computer for days cause once you start it is very, very hard to stop! I had to pull myself away from it just to write this very review that you're reading!
