Summary: Amazed, awed, and shocked
Review: I played the modification of Half Life, Counterstrike, and was amazed at the realism. I played it at my friends house and only thought of Half Life as a barrier between me and counter-strike, I played counterstrike for a couple nights, and sucked it up because I hadnt even tried Half-Life, so I thought Id just use Half Life as a trainer for Counterstrike, again not expecting much. I was sucked into the story line by the second chapter. My only complaint with the game is that it didnt rely much on me helping out the other scientists in sticky situations, but Half Life 2 is coming out and Im sure that that will make up for the badstuff. The game took me almost 30 hours of game play to beat on normal settings, and except for like 2 parts in it that i got frustrated, they were the most intense 29 hours of my life. (The two parts that werent fun were in the trams, and killing the nihilith or whatever its called. Take my advice and buy this game right now, its only 17 dollars, id gladly pay twice that for just the single player, buy it for both counterstrike and the singleplayer though.

Summary: Awesome Sci-Fi and Great First Person Shooter
Review: I fell in love with this game just playing the demo. In a unusual twist the single player version is AWESOME!!-unlike countless other games in the genre. I have not played the multi-player version yet but I have seen EVERYWHERE you can find info that it is great. The settings and environments are truly awesome with a great sci-fi feel, and the graphics are incredibly amazing. The first 30-40 minutes of game play is overly gory so queasy gamers should beware, HOWEVER if you can stiffen your resistence and get through it you will be endlessly rewarded. The first area alone is huge, and you progress seamlessly to new areas which progress the plot.. The best thing is the powerful way the game sets the mood it can be truly creepy, humorous, or just awe-inspiring as you gaze at unique and creatively designed aliens, even when you are in extreme danger as they come to attack you. Aliens and sci-fi are nothing new in this genre but the unique presentation and high quality make this game stand out above the rest. When I say creepy i do not mean "when is the enemy gonna jump me?" I mean "oh my god these aliens are unbelievably scary and I'm all alone and and...hey wait a minute its only a game" The aliens themselves are truly unique you wont see the overused roswell type aliens but ingenious creations that make you think these people must have studied biology they are well structured, act realisticly for their body construction and situation and means of survival- i mean these seem like REAL creatures not some dopey artificial intelligence monsters.and this is just from the beginning of the game, I have not played it through all the way but it just gets better!! You do not need to take my word for it just look this game up just about anywhere...If you play it you will immediately realize why it got its well deserved game of the year award. It is one of the few games today that restores your faith in 3 dimensional gaming when you happen to be a lover of traditional 2-dimensional game classics like i am. and part 2 is on the way!!! if you play first person shooters you MUST BUY THIS!!!!!

Summary: Half-life...slow and dull
Review: This game bills itself as an action game...well good luck finding any action. I hope you enjoy finding your way around mazes, searching for buttons, climbing insanely long (and easy to fall off) ladders, and fighting the ugre to simply turn this garbage off and delete it from your system.

Summary: Half-Life
Review: Imagine, this. (especially in 1998.)....It's the year 2000+, you work for a top-secret super futuristic scientific research facility, located some-where in New Mexico, your co-worker sciencetists every day conduct more and more crazy experiments(considering interdimensional rifts between energy forces and portals, aliens, and so on.), and are surrouded by america-attituded security guards that seem to wear their helmet on too tightly. Imagine, always being watched by your boss, the G-man, the administrator of the research facility you work in, in a black suit with a suit case. Freaky, you think. Working with amazing next-generation technology in the most massive intricrate place ever on earth and much more. It's called the BLACK MESA RESEARCH FACILITY. Imagine hearing scientists complain all day about having things break that they break themselves. But one day, "science wen't haywire". It was just another day at the office. TO begin with, you took a nice morning ride in the black mesa research facility trains. There appears to be some problems in the facility the morning things go wrong, but your not worried. Until you enter the office. As your train stops at the entrance to the Anomolous materials labotory, the part of Black Mesa you work for, the one with the most crazy scientists that conduct the craziest and most bizarre experiments, the wierdo ones. The guard escorts you out of the tram, and opens the machine-controlled gate to the Labatory you work for, by entering a special code only HE knows. You slowly walk into the labatory, and the door behind you closes. You walk deep into the hall way, as the next gate opens, You step into the labatory. Immediateley, the security guard at the desk says that scientists have been having problems and that his computer has crashed and he's trying to find the files he lost. As you continue to think and explore another day at the office, you make your way down to the labratory after you snatch on your hazard suit near the restrooms. You got the last one. As you make your way down the experimental labatory, you are asked to enter the generator area and start the rotors. You do so. After it's 100% completely start up and ready for the experiment, a futurstic like shopping cart is brought up out of the storage, holding a spectacular unique crystal, and you are told to push it into the beam. You do so, and BAM. There's where Half-Life's brilliant story truly begins. Featuring amazing graphics, Artifcial Intelligience, Sound, Multiplayer along with team fortress, innovative incredible game play experience, extremely well done storyline, great character design and vocie acting, and more, Half-Life is truly a unique experience. And a powerful one. Beat it all the way through and see what I mean. [NOTE, you may notice under the half-life box you purchase, there are minimum and preffered system requirements. If you have a system that is equivilent to the minimum or preffered sytems noted, half-ilfe will be really laggy depending on your settings. I suggest you at least have a Pentium II with a major 3D graphics accelerator supporting OpenGL or/and Direct3D (TNT, Voodoo, Banshee, etc...)with at least 128 megabytes of RAM with Windows 98 or higher, an advanced major 3-D sound accelerator(Sound Blaster, Aureaal Dimaond Monster 3-D, etc)supporting EAX, or A3D, and at least IDSN, prefereably adsl or higher for the ultimate smooth half-life experience. I have a new Gateway with a Pentium 4 processor at 1.5ghz with 512ddr266mhzMegabytes of RAM with an NVIDIA GeForce 2 TI along with Sound Blaster Live! 5.1 MP3+ And Windows XP and ADSL for the ultimate gaming experience, the game runs quite smoothly.) If you play half-life through, you will be impressed. I just can't wait till I get my hands on half-life 2 this autumn. Have fun playing half life until then:)

Summary: Half a decade and still great
Review: I have owned Half-life since it hit the shelves. My first computer was not powerful enough to play it, so i had to hold onto it for a year. I just reinstalled it yet again this weekend. What is it that keeps me coming back? Replayability. I have played the game through at least twice a year. Its like a great book or movie that requires frequent revisiting. I also have an addiction to Counter-Strike, the greatest mod ever made. It also has a ton of addons (made by valve and gearbox). Also, when mentioning the mods, I would be remiss if i didnt mention the Romero-inspired "They Hunger". If you like horror, this is the mod for you. Purchasing this one game opens the door to an endless world of Gameplay. If you do not have it, get it. get it now.

Summary: The only game that made me buy two copies.
Review: Normally I'm not ... for buying extra copies, but Half-Life did just that. I myself have a personal story of going into the store to get something...only to end up with a brand new original copy of Half-Life, in that famous original box (not the somewhat worse, but still palatable one you see here for the GotY version).

Yes, you know that you can easily patch any version, and that Half-Life's Counter-Strike modification has kept this game pulling more players than the top other games combined. The number of mod projects for this title are staggering, and Valve Software is making sure to get every last bit of performance out of this one until the "Next Big Thing," which sources have us believe will be quite soon, and quite big (and no, I wouldn't say it's CS 1.6...we're talking about something else). Are there any bad things about this game?

Well, the graphics still are the best thing that my venerable old Packard Bell with 200 MHz Genuine Intel Pentium ran, with its 16 MB of EDO RAM and extremely primitive 1 MB S3 ViRGE card. Still, it ran. Often the graphics seem ugly in comparison to other, newer, and supposedly better things, but they work, and if you care about winning in CS, this seems a secondary concern.

If anything, don't buy this for the standalone game but--for goodness sake--get online and try out some of those mods. You deserve it!

Summary: Still Is the best game Evar
Review: Many of you know this game, from the publicity it got from Counterstrike. Many of you counterstrike player's might not know of this game. But you should, this game back when it was released (1998) was ahead of its time, it introduced the puzzle element it FPS games, the cinematic feeling you got when you play the role of Gordon Freeman, a scientist working at the Black Mesa Anomalous Materials Research Center. If you haven't yet bought this game or haven't yet even tried it. It is definately a game you should have on your shelve at home. I have been seeing reviews right here on this sight saying that the graphics are dated, well duh... they are the game is 5 years old, and still kicking, with a multiplayer gaming community that is larger than Quake 3, Unreal Tournament 2003, & Battlefield 1942 combined. And is still growing. This game is a part of history, if you want to be involved in this history than I suggest you buy this game. This game has by far the most modifications out for it than any other game out there, with striving mod community's such as SvenCoop, Natural Selection, Science & Industry, & the yet to be released Half-life Rally.

I also noticed some reviewers saying the game is really buggy, or people cheat alot. That is true the game can be buggy at times, and people do cheat, but there is no way of avoiding that in any game. VALVe has tried their hardest to stop the cheating with their VALVe anit-cheat technology. They have also released many patches, from the start to fix most of the bugs.

I end my spiel right here saying please buy this game and come join the ever growing community of Half-life. Who knows maybe I'll see one of you in-game. If you do see me, dont mind to say hi, most people that play are nice.

Summary: This Game Rocks
Review: This game truly deserves the best video game ever award. It has the perfect mix of puzzle solving (tell your parents its educational!), mystery, and, of course, blasting stupid freaky aliens! The aliens aren't just little fluff balls, they scare the heck out of you when they pop out of no where. The array of weapons is stunning. Graphics are pretty good and it runs on pretty much all windows so you should all be able to play it. I can't wait to get the sequel and add-ons (Blue Shift and Opposing Force).

Summary: Classic, brilliant game
Review: This is definitely the best of its kind that I've played. Half-life wasn't really revolutionary - it was just a top, top quality game. It has got everything - huge attention to detail, great graphics, great storyline, realism, atmosphere, excellent A.I., great multiplayer (see Counter-Strike), great challenge. My only reservations are that it loses its way slightly when you enter the alien world. Once completed, the one-player version is still great fun, although maybe it doesn't have the playability of say, Unreal Tournament.

Summary: THIS GAME IS THE BEST -- BUT DOES NOT WORK ON XP!!!
Review: I had this computer on my 98 machine and it was truly the best pc game I have ever played (i have since moved on to ps2). I just got an xp machine, and it will not run!! So, beware. Anyway, if you are still on 95 or 98, this is a must have, especially at this price!!
