Rating: Summary: It's fun. What else is important? Review: This game is actually very fun to play. While it's not quite up to the same league as Homeworld, it is possibly the first Star Trek game that was pretty engrossing to play. Now the thinking puzzles of strategy are not calculus equations, so don't expect to duel with a real Artificial Intelligence, but it's at least as amusing as Starcraft. Oh yes, it is true. This is version 1.0 after all, and it is pretty buggy. I figured out how to avoid the bugs on my system by not going into any higher resolutions past 640X480, 16 bit color (although I tried 32 the last few times...seems okay...), and disabling all residual programs in the background-especially Antivirus programs. While it is disappointing that Activision couldn't make this a real wonder to the senses, at least the bugs are livable (Ultima Ascension folks know what I mean). What matters to me though is that I thought it was fun to play-we'll work out the rest later. (patches...sigh...why does it always have to be patches?)
Rating: Summary: Very surprised! Review: I wasn't going to expect much from this game, but I was pleasantly surprised by it! It plays just like the TV show, and the graphics are pretty good. I've shown the game to other Trekkers @ my job, and they've all gone out to buy it. Some people may need to tweak their systems to take full advantage of the graphics features of the game, but the actual game play is great! Can't wait for the add-on packs!
Rating: Summary: Standard RTS, Star Trek Theme, ... and Picard Review: The basic real time strategy algorithm is alive and kicking. This is inevitably true with releases like AOE2 which succeed despite trite RTS implementations.ST: Armada is basic RTS set in the Star Trek Universe. There is little here for the non-avid Star Trek fan. I personally love Star Trek, and have watched the series since the first episode of The Next Generation aired. This release lends itself very well toward Star Trek fans aching to take hold of the Enterprise-E, the Defiant, a Romulan Warbird, and so on. Although this game does have a 3D engine, and a cinematic mode, chances are that the most of the time will be spent in a top-down strategic view. The cinematic view is nice to pop to during controlled battles, but otherwise, it's pretty useless (although it does sometimes remind you of some of the Star Trek TV scenes). The graphics are decent, but no marvel. The engine is solid, but nothing fancy or extravagent. The thing that gets this release such support from ST fans is the sound. Your favorites can be easily recognized in the sound bytes. Phasors, photon torpedos, the stunning female voice of standard Federation ships. That, included with speech recorded by Patrick Stewart, Michael Dorn, and some of the other well-known Next Generation and DS9 actors, makes for a wonderful feeling of Star-Trek-ness. Although the ship commands do get very repetitive. Something about Worf continually screaming "Get us out of here, maximum warp!" continually when you click a space an inch away... However, the sound quality (at a decently high volume) isn't perfect. Lots of noise can be heard in the background of the voices. (You'd wish at least they'd have the decency to record these in a digital studio) As I stated, this title is by no means extravagant. Like many of the other ST titles, Paramount is milking its fans for all they're worth. Their motto is a little development, and rely on the name. I can envision a Star Trek armada with a true 3D interface, a stunning graphics engine that does justice to the universe. I can envision an Armada with brilliant, digital voices and sound effects that trumpet along with a beautiful crystal-clear soundtrack... Unfortunately, this is not the case. Due to lack of spending by Hasbro and Paramount on development, this game does not live up to all it could be. Don't get me wrong. There is still a lot of fun to be had with standard RTS in the Star Trek universe... I just wish I didn't have to manuever the Enterprise around concocted asteroid+nebula mazes. In any case, if you're a Star Trek fan, you'll enjoy it. If you're not, you might want to look at something with a little more development time.
Rating: Summary: A Star Trek Admiral's Dream! Review: I wasn't sure if I wanted to get this at first. I mean, after-all, if you really look at the previous Star Trek software that came out, it's pretty boring and useless. But not Star Trek: Armada. Not only do you get the decide how to attack the enemy, you have to have at least a general knowledge of the Star Trek TNG episodes to do any good. I also like the 'episode' way it plays. This way, you can complete one and don't have to worry about making sure you saved it to continue. Anyone who loves Star Trek, and who has ever fantasized that they could do better in a battle than Picard, this is your game.
Rating: Summary: It is a good day to be a Trekkie Review: From junk over junk games to humiliation of being only proud member of United Federation of Planets instead of Rebel Alliance, Armada finally showed what Star Trek is made of and can be. Well basic interface and screenshot companies and reviews posted looks very similar to Starcraft but do not get fooled by presentimental judgement of your eyes. Armada is far more than mere copy of Starcraft. Uniqueness of Armada lies on the combination of good things in lots of successful strategy games in the past. Those good things are clean easy interface of Starcraft, AI and multiplicity of command of Dark Reign, and view point and exciting combat of Homeworld. As matter of fact, Scout and Search & Destroy command (which was most useful in Dark Reign) was directly implemented. Furthermore, (my favorite) director's cut mode give you ability to see actual dogfight like combat in Homeworld. If you don't believe me just zoom the camera and you could see near TV version of starship combat. One thing I most liked was storyline. Well it's beat crappy but still interesting for to see plot develop instead of directly implementing from TV shows or movie. Nevertheless, there are few things I was really bugged. First is why did they make Defiant class warship and Klingon Bird of Prey so weak. Second is I think makers should design Borg lot stronger but expansive to build.
Rating: Summary: Good but buggy... Review: The game is excellent in every aspect, except that it IS FULL OF BUGS. It is very upsetting when you are playing for an hour or so and in the heat of battle, when suddenly the computer monitor flickers and your suddenly in windows. It's true and it happens a lot.
Rating: Summary: Resistance is most definately FUTILE! :) Review: I loaded it up and the next thing I know it was 6 hours later. A most thoroughly enjoyable game. The FMV sequences are amongst the best I have seen, and the inclusion of the actors voices puts the finishing touches on the game. Just beware of the Borg cube rush tactic in multiplayer.
Rating: Summary: I was assimilated by Star Trek: Armada... Review: "Aramada" is the best real-time strategy game I have ever played. You commmand either the Federation, Klingons, Romulans, or even the Borg in the name of conquest. What makes it even cooler, is that it's in 3-D. If you don't have "Armada", buy it today!
Rating: Summary: Star Trek Fans Rejoice! This title definitely does not suck! Review: I am about %30 through this game. It is a Real Time Strategy game which borrows several design and layout themes from Starcraft. This is not a bad thing. Armada delivers a hugely satisfying real time strategy experience, while also pushing every Star Trek fan's button you could hope for. After seeing the intro movie I was PRIMED to play this game. And the missions deliver; varied, challenging(not too bad on medium difficulty) and featuring great ship, environment and battle animations. Add to this nebulae, fog of war, cool ship capture options and special weapons and you get an experience that is fun to play and as a real bonus - a real time strategy where there are no true "throw away" units. Great job by Activision bringing this game to the masses!
