Summary: Ive seen attack ships on fire off the shoulder of orion.....
Review: I have been playing this game 6 hours a day for the last 3 days. Its all I do when I get home from work. The game, visually, is intense. Watching your squadrons of strike craft in sphere formation engaging enemy fighters while your capital ships pound your enemies frigates, destroyers and cruisers into debris is awesome. My personal favorite is watching the ion beams erupt through an exploding ship. The mechanics of combat are set up better than anything I have seen before. You have a true sense of scale, the fighters are tiny and motherships are huge. You could never pull something cheap like destroying a heavy cruiser with 2 scouts, the ion cannons have it rough targeting fighters etc.. Strategy is very important in this game. You can get stomped if you deploy your fleet the wrong way. Conversly if you execute your manuevers correctly you can smash your opponent with minimal losses. Combat is easy to manage. Definitely not a click-fest. Its enough to keep you on the edge of your seat but not enough to be overwhelming. Once orders are given you can sit back and watch for a few seconds, and its worth watching. Target selection is very easy, there are several different ways to select either you own or your opponents craft. On top of that when it gets hairy you can turn on a tactical overlay that identifies each ship as yours or theirs and what class of ship it is. The interface is pretty tight, you cant get lost, scrolling around in empty space and its very easy to manipulate the camera with the mouse and give orders at the same time. 3D movement which is tricky no matter how you implement it is done as easily as posible, you have to use it to understand it. Its hard to explain without at least a picture. There are flaws to everything and Homeworld is then just like everything else. There are two different clans of ships but only one campaign. On top of that there is only a minimal difference between the two clans. It would have been nice to see a substanial difference between the two clans ships and tactics like you do in Starcraft. The research and technology implementation is only mediocre. You get the chance to research new technologies after certain events in the game. But the research costs you nothing and you have as much time as you need at the end of each mission so the developers might as well have simply given it to you. The one major complaint that I have is that when I jump to hyperspace some of my ships tend to get left behind..... The bottom line is that this game delivers where it counts. The engine is solid and the gameplay is fluid. The missions are diverse and interesting. Homeworld 2 will only be better I imagine, with more diverse units and clans, and better animation. Homeworld does not feel like a finished project to me but the developers have made the right choices in focusing on the engine and gameplay. It lacks the glitz and lensflares, but if you have ever been burned by a hyped up game that fell flat then you know that its whats under the hood that counts. With the revenues and feedback from Homeworld I believe that further efforts by this team will be more refined and even more enjoyable.

Summary: My dream has come true!
Review: I've always wanted to play a really engrossing space sim, something like a movie / game. Well, after playing a lot of games without any engrossing gameplay, I decided to try out Homeworld. I'm glad I did! Homeworld is the BEST space RTS / Sim / Movie I've ever played! I feel like I'm taking part in a movie with the great music, voice overs, and cut scenes. The engine graphics are just amazing! I'm finally seeing the true power my of pc!

With that said, I do believe I will be playing Homeworld for quite some time. There's so much to do and explore, it really is a great game. If your one to try new games without all the hype, give Homeworld a try. It will change your whole attitude towards RTS games. Starcraft just doesn't seem to have any feel now after playing Homeworld.

Game of the Year bundle: The music CD is great! As for the Prima guide, it's as bad as all their other guides. Large print, lack of pages, and lack of rich content. Oh well, it's free anyway :)

Summary: I've played them all
Review: Once the game began, I knew I picked the right game. I've played C&C, TA, Red Alert, and other RTS-type game, but this takes the prize. The graphics is unbelieveable. Trust me on this one. I've never scene anything like this. The game itself is great too. The tutorial in this game should be utilized by many other games, so that one can simply press 'Play' and then just play. It's that easy. But then again, it will provide the enthusiast with a lot of challenges. Overall, this game is the best I've seen in years. Yes, it's better than all the RTS game I've played in the past. Forget Sims, forget Who Wants To Be a Millionaire, forget Quake III, stuff your pockets with $40 and go out and get this game.....NOW!

Summary: Maybe I am missing something.
Review: This is by far one of the most boring RTS games I have ever played, and I have played alot of them.

Just like in most RTS games, you have to collect resources. I spent most of my time waiting for the resource collectors to bring the resource. It was so boring. The single player mission was spent over half the time waiting. Waiting for resources. Waiting for your ships to build. Waiting for researches to finish.

The graphics were ok, but given the fact this was a 1999 game, I can see where the graphics would have been pretty good though I believe Total Annihilation, Starcraft, and especially Age Of Empires (which all 3 came out before Homeworld) looked better. The ships looked cool, but if you zoomed in on them, they looked pixally. And the cutscenes were just ok. It was cool to be able to see a 360 view of every ship though.

The battles weren't anything spectacular. You couldn't really see of hear any of the fighting going on. Just the same droning music over and over (the music was cool the first few missions, but gets rather boring later). It was also impossible to follow the battles as your camera follows one of units or the other.

The best thing about this game was the story. The story goes like this: A spaceship was found buried in sand here on Earth. Using that technology and the history found on the ship, they built their own ships so that they could head to their real Homeworld. As the story unfolds and new enemies and friends are made, the story keeps this game going. At least for me, that is the only reason I continued to play this game.

I read all of the reviews on many gamesites including Gamespot and Gamespy and many of the reviews here, and maybe my expectations were high, but one review said that no has since done what homeworld has done. And I believe the reason is who would want to. The idea about completely 3D space game is good in concept, but it takes away from the gameplay too much. This is definitely nothing like the games I mentioned before, but having played over 50 RTS games, this one didn't do it for me.

Next up is Homeworld Cataclysm. I bought all 3 Homeworld games at the same time because the price was cheap. So I don't feel like I was cheated too much. Game wasn't for me, but maybe it is for you.

Summary: user unfriendly
Review: I found this game very difficult to play. After a few sessions of about 30 to 60 minutes each I put it back in the box and tried to return it to Best Buy. They wouldn't give me a refund or store credit or anything but sympathy. I could probably learn to play it ok with several more hours of practice but that seems more like work than fun.

Summary: Very hard, to pick up but great anyways...
Review: This game is about conquest, exporation and it's got ever thing you needed for a great RTS. But the game is so hard to pick up I stopped playing it the first day. But with age it become a echo in the back of my mind I could remember how hard it was to even figure how to play. But a year later I rediscovered it and now it is a lot easier, probably because I am older now, but we will never know.

3/5 For the tutorial: As for me, it was hard to pick up like I said, and it is still pretty hard, but hey.

5/5 For the music: I am, one of the few teenagers out there, who hates Rap music. But I think anyone even Rap lovers will love the music.

4/5 For the graphics: They looked cool I was breathless with the destuctation of there homeworld in the like 4th mission. But some of the weapons pulse could have looked better.

5/5 For the story: This is what I look for in a game storyline, if it didn't have one. sorry not paying for it, not even if it was a dollar.

My final reveiw of this game, it's got a great storyline, perfact voice overs. But as for the tutorial it was sucky as in not enough descipetion. But the battle action is very cool to watch, the movies are amazing. As for the last word, not the best game to go and pick it right up. But hey, you have to to buy it.

Your Comrade, and your Brother-In-Arms, Gen.Ratman.

Summary: GREAT GAME BUT WATCH OUT FOR MISLEADING SELLERS! (GAMESTOP)
Review: Homeworld is one of the best games I've ever played. I first picked it up 3 years ago but was unable to finish it due to time constraints. I'd bought the Game of the Year edition and the soundtrack is great and the Strategy Guide is helpful. A year ago I sold the game and guide, (but not the OST). I've had a yearning to finally finish the game, as well as play the two sequels, (Cataclysm and Homeworld2), so I got online and started looking for a used edition.
Lo and behold I find that the Game of the Year edition is available from Gamestop through our favorite online store Amazon. I have visions of my freshman year playing HW with the guide and actually finshing the game this time, so I order it.
Imagine my dismay when the game I receive is not, in fact, the Game of the Year edition of my fond memories, but a cheaper, release version. Many game companies do this. They repackage their most popular games and send them out as "Classics" or "Best Sellers". In this particular instance, Sierra Entertainment has re-release the "Game of the Year Edition of Homeworld" as a "Sierra Best Seller Series" game. This version does NOT include the strategy guide. It does NOT include the OST. It doesn't even include the game's manual which, as I recall, was quite significant, containing much of the story line. No, my friends, this version of the game does not even include a jewel case for the CD-ROM. It's a box, with a CD in a sleeve, that's all.
The game is still great, and I'm ordering the strategy guide used, but I've given Gamestop bad feedback because they apparently didn't feel obligated to let potential customers know that they were being misled.
So if you're looking for the Game of the Year Edition of Homeworld, DO NOT look to GameStop for your answer. Find it somewhere else on Amazon, or online, or even in an EB Games or other "real world" store.
Good luck and Happy Gaming!

Summary: Good Game for its Time.....
Review: This game was a good game. I played ORB first and found myself always comparing the two. The graphics were ok but could have been better for 1999. The story was mediocre. It was about a stone found in the middle of a desert on Earth and it had a map of the humans first home called Hiigara or something like that. The people of Earth built a spacecraft and transplanted a girl named Karen into the mother ship itself. She is similar to the master computer in the show "Star Trek." Are you getting all this.....That's what I mean. It's such a ridiculous story but the game gave birth to ORB, HW Cataclysm, and HW 2.

I hope HW 2 graphics is similar to ORBs. Next up for me is HW Cataclysm and then HW 2. I will do a review when complete. See my review on ORB.

Summary: Home World1 By ViciousHomeWorld
Review:
Greeting people. Home World 1 is one of the best RTS (real time strategy) games that I have ever played. It is absolutely awesome and I think that everyone should have it. I will most definately rank this game 5 out of 5 *****. This game is worth its money. I am looking to purchase it again because I have played it for so long that my original CD I bought when the game came out 5 years ago is so scratched up. I am even using a burned copy of my original right now and even my burned copy is getting scratched up.

I at the moment in Home World1 am in the Lost Souls clan. My name is ViciousLS. I design and develope strategies for the game. I have designed over 5 strategies within the past year. One is SSS known as Sphere's Scout Strategy. The other is VGS, the VicaGaran Strategy. I have gotten more than my money's worth of this game and I can assure you that everyone who plays it right now has as well.

The people of Home World range from ages 10 all the way to 60. They all get along. There are also many clans. One clan consists of just people 35 years of age and older. They are known as the OMO (Old Men Online) They however, play many many games besides HW1. HW1 far out ranks HW2. Many of us HW1 people do not like HW2 because of its lack of strategic planning and the skills needed to rush the enemy and over come what he or she might have in store for us. Some of us HW1 players get on TeamSpeak, a voice chat. We play the game and stay on the voice chat to coordinate and plan attacks in the game. I myself have voice chatted with many of the people from HW1 and many from other countries. These countries include: USA, Canada, Mexico, Spain, Italy, Poland, Germany, UK, Holland, Bosnia, Belguim, France, and Russia. As you can see, it is indeed a wide variety of countries and it is very fun to chat with people of different cultures and to experience how they play on HW1. I a 16 and have chatted on voice chat and played in HW1 with many many people throughout my career. In time we grow and learn to respect eachother in the game. There are some wiseasses and morons in the game yes.. But most of us still have respect for others. New players are allways welcomed by most and I hope that if you get this game, to PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE! Learn the basics of the game... Play the single player missions... Read the manual, it provides a good knowoledge of the game.

I hope to see you soon playing HW1!
