Summary: Best C&C Title, Possibly Best RTS Ever.
Review: I have been an avid strategy gamer since the days of Dune 2000, Warcraft I, and the original Command & Conquer. I have extensively played the most popular RTS games out there, such as Warcraft II and III, all Command & Conquer titles (with expansions), Starcraft, and Brood War. However, after playing all these both online and single player, I have to say that C&C: Generals is a contender for the best RTS I have ever played.

The graphics engine has vastly improved from Red Alert 2, and it is now on par with (if not better than) Warcraft III, bragging fantastically detailed 3D units and buildings. The size scale has also been realistically altered, so that now tanks are considerably larger than infantry, and buildings are considerably larger than tanks. The game uses a Warcraft-like bottom-of-the-screen command bar, which is an improvement from the right side command bar. The flashy FMVs have been replaced with cinematic in-game scenes (again, like WCIII!) which are very well done. You'll notice a few Matrix-style slowdowns and freezes in order to capture the action in these cutscenes.

The game is fairly realistic, taking place a few decades from modern times. The sides are the USA, GLA (Global Liberation Army, terrorists), and China. Each side is relatively balanced and vastly different in their strategy. The USA has a huge airforce and is technologically superior to the other two sides. China has strength in numbers and its units get bonuses when grouped, but it also has several unique technologies such as nuclear siege weapons and flame tanks. The GLA excels in hit & run technology, boasting such units as Bomb Trucks and Terrorists (suicide bombers) and several vehicles that use enemy parts to upgrade themselves.

While some may find the campaign a bit drab compared to other games, I found it very enjoyable and realistic. The difficulty is challenging, and there are many quirks that make it even more fun, such as reinforcements coming in by train and POWs that need to be rescued. However, if you play Skirmishes, or standalone battles, you will find yourself occupied for many hours. Online play uses a matchmaking system, and a world builder utility is included with the game, so you are practically guaranteed many sleepless nights of campaigns.

There are plenty of other features that make the game worth playing, such as the General system, but I need not say more. You won't be disappointed if you like strategy!

Summary: Multiplayer and skirmish fun, but [not good for] single player
Review: I had big expectations for this game. The ads made it look like a revolution in graphics (It is over it's predecessor, but not over the competition), so when I started it up I immediately felt disappointed and started looking for everything wrong with it. I began playing one of the campaigns and beat it. It was okay, but I was still finding myself complaining about it a lot.

After being dissatisfied with the campaign I started playing skirmishes and then multiplayer (This is the real reason these games are made). I found that this was a balanced game with three unique teams to choose from. Every team has good units that can oppose any other team. There are a variety of ways to play the game. I find myself digging in at my base and saving money for the big weapons like the nuclear missle.

So after actively looking for everything wrong with this game I ended up addicted to it. Buy this game and team up with a friend against six brutal computer players. That is a challenge I haven't met' yet.

Summary: Overrated
Review: A good RTS game but I actually thought Red Alert 2 was a lot more fun to play. The missions were better and the game had a cleaner look in Red Alert 2. The design for the 3D vehicles and the infantry looked like a hack job, like something you'd see in a Power Rangers movie. The cartoonish look of Red Alert 2 gave it charm but the cartoonish look and feel of Generals gives it an element of disappointment. For me the models ruined the whole game for me, the game play is actually quite good but everything looks too silly.

Summary: I hope "Zero Hour" adds some difficutly
Review: Like many reviewers, I've been a fan of C&C since the first title (loved all except Renegade). That being said, here's some major points of consideration for anyone who doesn't have this title yet and is considering buying it:

1) No FMV between missions

This seems minor, but I was really looking forward to them. Sure, they were always somewhat campy, but I just enjoyed the cut-scenes. They never enhanced game play, but they did enhance the enjoyment of playing.

2) 3D graphics

Westwood did a great job on this. Every review mentions it so we'll stop there. What most reviews also mention is the Herculean system you have to have to run this game at max detail w/o getting choppy!

3) Animated explosions

This was really surprising! The first time I saw a technical explode and launch the gunner into the air (whilst screaming) was it - I really appreciated the detail that was taken to craft these.

4) Animated explosions pt II

They get a little tiresome after the 100th time - every time with the same screaming sound... In fact, all the sounds get tiresome quickly. Does every unit have to say something everytime you click on (or direct) them? It's a little excessive. After a while you have to kill the effects and stick to the music.

4) Difficulty levels

I made the mistake of playing USA first on "Hard", and walked through every mission. So I did China on "Brutal" - same thing. Then with GLA... now it gets difficult. Trust me: this is not the case of me being a great player, it's that the GLA (whom both sides war against) is just not equipped to deal with the US/China units. I suppose it's accurate in a real-world sense, but it'd really be better if they could bloody your nose a couple of times before you figured the strategy out!

So, I've complained a lot and still gave 4 stars? You bet: Generals is visually awesome, explosions are top-notch, it's fun (at least the first time through), and it's a good way to burn a few hours of time. If you played the campaign and were less than satisfied, then LAN up w/ some friends and REALLY get the full impact! "Zero Hour" will add more units and fuel to the fire, and I look forward to buying it as well.

Hope this helps in your decision!

Summary: THESE REVIEWS ARE OF A DIFFERENT GAME!!!!!!!!!!
Review: Beware -- many many of these user reviews are of previous games in the series BEFORE Command and Conquer Generals. Those games were very different, so Yuri's Revenge, Red Alert, etc. reviews are not reviews of Command & Conquer Generals. Beware.

Summary: Great continuation of the legacy
Review: I own and have extensively played the whole Command and Conquer series save Cover Operations Mission disc for the original. Generals is quite simply an excellent game that has continued to keep me interested in the series well beyond most gaming series. The graphics are above average, especially given my beafy system, and the sound effects to go with the game are on the same level as the original Red Alert. The interface, even though it moved from side bar to the bottom, is just as easy to navigate if not easier than before.
Unit variety amongst the three sides makes for an excellent balance in the game while forcing you to devise new strategies to combat the different sides depending on which side you play on. Unlike most games of the genre, unit variety is not the same unit with a different color and look to it. The units are unique enough to allow different combinations and highlight the major differences technologically and strategically that each side has.
My only complaint is the lack of a navy. The animation of the water is superb, some of the best I have seen, but there is no navy to complement the presence of the water. The expansion, which is on its way to my house, still has not addressed this hole in the game; hopefully future versions of the series do not make the same mistake by eliminating the navy. All in all, a superb game that is a better complete work than most of its competitors and offers tremendous replayability that is hard to rival.

Summary: C&C:Generals Kicks Ass
Review: I first played this game with my friend at a computer store. We found it quite easy to get a grip on as it is easy instructions. We found it to be highly enjoyable, and have been talking about it ever since then. Although there are only three armies to choose from, they have an extremely wide variety of technology. I always play as China, and my friend plays as USA. We tried the GLA but thought they were cr4p.

Summary: Great Strategy in Multiplayer Mode
Review: I'm a huge fan of the Command and Conquer series, so buying Generals didn't require any thought. We were rewarded with great graphics and amazing multiplayer gameplay.

First, the good. The graphics are quite impressive, definitely a step up from previous games. The various terrains - from snow to sand to grass to concrete - are well done. The trees sway in the wind. The units leave little tracks as they move, the construction of buildings makes you really feel like you're watching an army base get built.

The sound and music is well matched and makes the game feel realistic. Controls all work just the way you'd hope they would - after so many games they really have that down to a science.

On the down side, the usual problems in strategy gaming exist here. pathfinding isn't always perfect, units get stuck against buildings or in chasms. The campaign missions help you learn your skills but aren't extremely challenging.

Still, as with just about every game that comes out today, the built in gameplay is merely a training ground for the real challenge of multiplay. There's no way a computer could compete with the challenge posed by a real human being with experience and knowledge at the other end of the map. This game really shines in multiplayer. The three sets of units are well balanced, and if you get yourself onto a large map with teammates and opponents, you'll be hooked for months.

Skirmish mode is quite fun too, earning medals for different accomplishments.

Definitely a great game for any strategy gaming fan!

Summary: Generals is AMAZING!!!!
Review: The game I am writing a new fiction in a line dating back to 1996, and this game revolves around the events currently happening. This is Command and Conquer Generals, three sides go to war. these are China, the United State, and a terrorist group called the Global Liberation Army try to takeover the world. It sounds like the events of today in a game.
This game has EXCELLENT graphics (which shows what multi-Gigahertz procesors and 128 bit Graphics cards are for,) great gameplay, except for the easy artificial intelligence compared to other great games such as Starcraft, which was probably the best RTS ever made, Command and Conquer, and Warcraft 3. The realistic storyline is a great change from the previous games( such as Red Alert Yuri's Revenge, ect.) A great soundtrack is included, a "general" system lets you recieve different abilities and commands to use. I highly recommend this game:)

Too all of you who hate Generals, go buy Praetorians, thats good, or Warcraft 3 The Frozen Throne when it comes out in June.

GENERALS RULES (but Starcraft does too...)
