Summary: Been here since before the beginning
Review: I've been involved with WWII Online since before the launch. Due to circumstances beyond their control, the developers had to release the game against their will, about 8 months too soon. The first few weeks were rough, as demand for the game was about ten times what was expected. Although it had a rocky start, the game has matured considerably since its release in June of 2001. The upcoming 1.6 patch, which is in open beta testing, routinely has over 300 people in pitched battles lasting for hours. This patch marks a new beginning for the game, with a new underlying code base, and completely reworked infantry models, with recoil, reloading, and fatigue affecting bullet dispersion, just to name a few things. There is a brand new user interface and keymapper, making custom control layouts a snap.

There is no other game on the market with the scale and scope of this game. You have a two mile line of sight instead of 400 ft like other shooters. One town can be 4 times the size of a Wolfenstein multiplayer map, and there are almost 300 towns! This doesn't include the countryside between towns. All buildings are enterable.

You can be a trooper (rifle, SMG or "sapper" with demolition charges), a tank, an anti-tank gun, an anti-aircraft gun, a fighter pilot, a bomber pilot, a gunner/bombadier on a bomber, pilot or gunner on a patrol boat, even drive a truck or half track to haul troops and guns. You and a buddy can also split duties in a tank, with one guy driving and the other gunning.

There is literally nothing like this in the world. This is the game that the "big guys" in the gaming industry said couldn't be done. The graphics have improved since the beginning, but you still have to remember that today's video cards can only draw a certain amount of "triangles", and with a two mile line of sight, there is a lot to draw. You can't have 20,000 triangles to make one tank with the scale this game has, so you won't see Medal Of Honor type graphics. Considering this, the graphics are pretty darn good. ...

Performance continues to increase, though you'll want at least 256MB for optimum performance.

Amazingly, this is one Massive Multiplayer Online game that does *not* give you a huge edge if you have a cable modem or DSL. I have a friend playing on a 38k connection from New Zealand, and he flies fighter planes! The only bonus to having broadband is being able to download the patches faster. The way the game is structured, framerates in the high 20's feel very smooth.

The one complaint I hear most is from folks trying to just jump in and have instant fights. The way to find a fight is to read the mission board before spawning. That way you can find where the fights are. If you like to play house to house infantry, look for the city icons with an explosion. That means both sides own part of the town, and usually means a fight. When traveling from one town to the other, there is some time involved, because they are modeling all of Western Europe at half scale. This means that if two towns are 100 miles apart in real life, they are 50 miles apart in the game. Right now, all of Belgium and most of Holland and Luxembourg are modeled, along with Northern France and Southern England.

All vehicles are as close to realistic as a computer simulation can be, with actual factory drawings and performance data used to make the tanks, trucks, and aircraft.

This game has ruined Day of Defeat, Medal of Honor, and Castle Wolfenstein multiplayer for me. There is simply nothing to compare to being on an attack with tanks, bombers, fighters and trucks of infantry. It's even fun to defend, seeing tanks prowling in the brush outside of town, and hearing the scream of a Stuka divebombing your base. It isn't perfect, sometimes you will see airplanes warp or skid as the predictor catches up with them, but once you find a group of people to team up with, it can't be beat.

Summary: Just gets better & better
Review: Yes this game stunk when it first was released.
However, with version 1.6 almost ready fro release, this game is 1000 times better than it's original release. The game play is awesome, the scope and depth of the battle field is incredible and the community is very helpful and welcoming.

It DOES require a lot of horsepower from your pc. The guy who left the review regarding framerate issues, just needs more ram. I have 384 ram on a P3 933 on a standard DSL connection and I experience very little lag. Version 1.6 is currently being tested for release and the memory improvements that they have made make it so that you'll be fine on 256 ram.

Summary: Blitzkrieg needs massive fixes to live up to advertisements
Review: I downloaded the free Gigex trial period and played it nightly for two weeks. I joined a squad and downloaded an IP chat program for near real-time voice communications with others in your squad (3rd party utility). ... Tanks are a blast although key mapping needs drastic improvements and tanks need some sort of more rapid "look-see" such as opening the hatch. Overall graphics and frame rates for me were excellent on the ground with occasional lock ups and weird audio problems with game sounds.

Flying is a disaster. Not only does the flight model stink but the frame rate over densely active areas with lots of players and graphics drops frame rates to unbearably slow rates, expect 10-12 FPS even with ultra speed connections. I run a 1MB Cable Modem and pay extra for 256K upload and my frame rates stink in the air, so bad that I cannot hardly win a dogfight and I am a pilot for real!

Overall the game is very exciting and has tons of potential but paying for the game and then paying for a monthly subscription is not going to happen for me at this point as I do not feel the game is ready for the public yet. ... Want to play it? You'll need at least a 1Ghz machine with high speed internet access such as DSL (ISDN would be way too slow). Modem play is a joke, even at 56K. You will need at least 128MB RAM but 256 or 512 would be much better! You will aslo need screaming graphics, at least 32MB video card. I have a Radeon 8500 32MB and it is pretty good. GeForce4 would be much better. 17" monitor would help. Maybe the developers will add multi monitor support in the future, say 3 monitors for front, left and right. Bottom line, great fun and great frustration too, play at your own risk. Just dont cry when you have to go out and upgrade your PC just to get minimal performance on this game. Gargantuan MipMapping and texturing files, massive cross communications and opponent tracking, lagging kills and dissapearing tanks and troops are common. Chances are if your the fastest PC and connection, you'll win in battle. Worth a look but don't pay for it yet for god sakes!

Summary: It could use a make over
Review: With the tech of today and the so called tech the people who made this game it could use a lot more graphics and a story of update when you get in. it costs money to pay for a game that a 2 year old made. it does have a very good map but it gets boring waiting on a tank or opel blitz or even running and walking to the battle feild. while i did the waiting a got a small paper wheiht to keep the walk button down while i read and watch it from time to time checking my map to see my map. and also when you get under a tank and shoot the bottom of the tank you destroy it. you die in 1 or 2 hits and when you get shot your screen gets blinking with red which is redder when u have more damage.

Review: This game is compltetly different from launch. New patching has squashed every major bug, new vehicles have been implemented, etc. It's worth it, trust me.

Summary: Fun and addictive
Review: Holy cow, this game is fun. WWII online has worked through its early problems and, while not perfect, is still just about the most fun I've had playing an online game. It's amazingly immersive and well modeled. Just the driving a tank, for example, is better than most tank sims I've played! And that's only one part of the game...you can fly a plane, man a gun, or attack as infantry. All the parts are modeled differently, and all the vehicles have different strengths and weaknesses. This is a tough game to get tired of since there's so many things to try.

A few warnings - you will need a decent processor and video card to play this. 512MB of RAM is also a big help. The learning curve can also be a bit steep at first, but it's not too insanely tough to get the hang of. Also, a note to FPS fans - this is *not* Quake II. I f you expect to jump in as infantry, run off by yourself and take on the enemy you will last about ten seconds. This game requires strategy, teamwork, and patience - one shot can kill, and the guy who will get you is the one you don't see.

Minus one star because of the high system requirements and a few remaining gameplay issues. The game has evolved so much since its initial release, however, that I am confident it will only get better and better.

This game rocks - go buy it!

Summary: This Game Rocks!
Review: This is by far the most absorbing and fun game I've ever played. This game is not for people who want fast paced action. There is a lot of strategy and co-ordination that goes into the game. This game is highly addictive.
