Summary: the truth
Review: this is the only game that shows how warfare was in the 16th-18th centuries I am a hardcore wargamer so this was a breath of fresh air to me that they made this game all of the units are highly detailed and the combat relies on strategy not by number I personally have destroyed 1000+ units with 500 grenieders so if you are interested in renissance warfare then you must buy this game but chek for patches it is a little buggy and the gameplay is very hard to master but easy to learn

Summary: Not a worthy competitor to AoK II
Review: I got Cossacks because I was tired of AoK II and wanted a new game in the RTS genre. I am not impressed. The big advantage that many people cite is that you can have larger armies, up to 8,000 units in the game. Unfortunately, this decision has two negative results: 1) The cannon-fodder mentality, instead of throwing dozens of units at an opponnent, you can now throw hundreds. As an example of how the game caters to this mentality, you can create 5 units in a click by holding down shift. 2) Graphics obviously must suffer as the computer is drawing 10 times as many objects. I'd say stick with AoK II.

Summary: Great Game
Review: This is a wonderful, gigantic and engaging game. I have spent more than a few hours playing it and have barely begun to scratch the surface! I would recommend this to anyone with a taste for strategy games!

Summary: One of the best strategy games of the year
Review: If I could give it 4 and a half stars I would because there are a couple features that are really annoying such as having to click on the grain button to grow crops. Even though it says that you can have up to 8000 units in a battle the chances of that are not very high. You have to build 533 house to support them and make the. Besides that there are a lot of different units and the buildings look different for nearly every civilization. Units are made fast for buildings like the Diplomatic center and the barracks. Deppending on the amount of upgrads you have reaserched the artillery depot is fast. The cavelry center is extremly slow. Another reason why I would give it four and a half stars is because it is kind of a spin off of Age of Empires and a little Starcraft.

Summary: Frustrating
Review: I get frustrated playing this game. I have problems with the game locking up, or fatal errors occuring alot and ruining my game. It wouldn't be so bad if you weren't two or three hours into the game when it happens and usually only if you are winning. I have had this game for about three weeks and I have only beat one campaign level without the game locking up or fatal errors occurring. I guess it wouldn't be so bad if you didn't have to win to get to the next level in the campaign. If you press the pause button it locks up sometimes. The game moves pretty slow so you don't really have to use the pause button. And if you save a game it locks up sometimes too, and then you start from where you saved the game and it will lock up in the same spot. I have had better luck with the Random maps games though. I don't know it might just be my computer but I have unloaded and reloaded the game around five times and it still locks up sometimes. I would suggest spending your money on something else or waiting for them to fix some of the bugs before buying it. Unless you are stubborn like me and like banging your head against the wall when you have been playing a game for a couple of hours and then the game locks up just when you think you have discovered how to win. I like the concept of the game and you have literally hundreds of units and a large tech tree and the mines are cool, you can upgrade them and fit more units inside as you go along. And I like the idea that your resources of gold, iron, coal, stone, and wood are unlimited and you don't eventually run out and have to go find more resources(you just have to add more peasants if you are running low). They need to fix some of the bugs before it is a five star game. Maybe you will love to hate this game as much as I do?

Summary: The Empire Has Fallen, Cossacks Are Here
Review: I thought Ages was the best game around until I picked up Cossacks. It's what Age of Empires could never seem to be. Real time strageties, formations, neverending mines (except you gotta keep em protected), great graphics. This game is addictive with a capital A. Play a couple of games on Cossacks and you'll never go back.

Summary: A surprising hit
Review: I was first doubtful about this game. I played the demo and I am very impressed. The graphics and sound is outstanding. I was a fan of AOE and this game is simaliar to AOE but has better gameplay and you need to actually use strategy when launching an offensive. After playing the demo I am ordering the game today. I have read that the game has some bugs, but I did not encounter any during the demo. Also I was very impressed with the AI. If your not careful the computer will turn the tides of war on you. If you like strategy war games then try the demo. If you don't want to spend all day downloading the demo, the July 2001 issue of Maximum PC has it on disc.

Summary: Might convert me to real-time strategy games
Review: Most of my favorite games have always been turn-based. Age of Empires confirmed what I had read: that winning a real-time game was more about frantically clicking the mouse than about thinking: he who clicks fastest wins. When I discovered how similar in concept Cossacks was to AOE, I feared the worst-- but this time I was more patient and determined. Perhaps, too, the game helps by letting you slow it down enough to catch your breath, at least when no enemies are on the horizon. I'll probably always stick to the slower settings; but as I learn how to play this kind of game, I'm starting to enjoy it.

Meanwhile there are mental challenges enough, and although I hardly consider graphics a sine qua non for a fine game, they are very impressive and intriguing. The system requirements, only moderate by state-of-the-art standards, are used resourcefully. On both computers on which I have installed the game, the older of which barely meets the stated requirements and fails to run several other recent games, Cossacks has run solidly and without the bugs that a few others lamented. The only bug (as I see it) that I have noticed is that option settings are not always preserved in saved and retrieved games.

I am also happy with the substantial manual, except that it never defines, at least in any obvious place, some of the terminology (such as "life" and "time") figuring in the quantitative description of units and buildings. These are apparently important characteristics, but what, exactly, do they mean?

A few minor disappointments: at least in scenarios, the game gives no score. When you fulfill the objective, a quick screen announces "Victory achieved" and that's it. Nor does anything allow you either to measure either the passage of time in the game. So if you replay a scenario because you think you need the practice and can do better, how do you determine whether you're improving? It would also be handy to be able to determine the precise location of a feature on the map in terms of x and y co-ordinates.

All in all, this relative newcomer calls Cossacks well worthwhile.

Summary: Cossacks - Don't Pass This Up
Review: The game reminds me a little of Warcraft. It is easy to learn, and exciting to play. You don't get bogged down in gathering food and minerals. Armies are easy to raise, and the number of troops any side can have is impressive. The computer AI can turn things around quickly if you under estimate it. The graphics and sound are good. Taking advantage of the terrain can assist you in defense. I highly recommend the game.
