Rating: 5 stars
Summary: MUCH BETTER THAN AGE OF EMPIRES 2
Review: I bought this game after a friend recommended it to me, claiming it is, "What Age of Empires 2 should have been. I gave it five stars, even though there are several cons about it.

As for the pros, there is everything printed on the back of the box, such as 8,000 units on a single battlefield, which you are probably familiar with from the other reviews. I personally think that the campaigns on Cossacks are much better than the AOK campaigns; there are more realistic, more difficult, and last for a very long time. The artificial intelligence is great. The computer players actually have some strategy, and you, the human player, can't just march up to the enemy and conquer them as in AOK, but has to have some strategy. It is much more realistic than AOK. People actually eat, for one thing.

One con is that people don't follow orders very well. You order them to attack one unit, and they attack another unit in another direction. Next, you can't destroy guarded seige weapons unless you destroy the huge formations of pikemen and heavy riders surrounding them. Also, there is no map editor. Despite these cons, I would highly recommend any real time strategy lover to get this game.

Summary: Will never de-throne Age of Empiress II but still a fun game
Review: This game is a good game for those of you who can't possibly play another game of AOEII and are waiting for the release of Empire Earth. That's where I found myself a month ago when I decided to give Cossacks a try.

Cool features: unlimited resources. Nice graphics. Units not limited to 200. AI of Cossacks is very good. Even on the easiest level, enemy armies will search for your weaknesses...They circle your city looking for an approach that you haven't protected well and that's where they will attack.

Annoying features: Enemy units can capture your buildings, builders and artillery if left unguarded. (this really gets to be a pain in the butt after a while.) Farm fields regenerate once and then you have to manually regenerate them. Firing cannons costs entirely too much coal and iron. Units require resources for upkeep. In other words, once you build a battleship for instance, it sucks gold right out from under you at an alarming rate. Then if you don't catch it in time and you run out of gold, a mutiny happens and your battleship becomes independent, attacking everything it sees. Keeping enough food on hand can be a challenge too. The enemy will distract you on one side while their ships sneak in and destroy your sea port and all your fishing boats. Then you go to fix that and fend their ships off and they sneak in from the back side and steal your mills from you. Before you know it, you're out of food and all your people start to die. ARRRGHHH!! anyway, you get the point... Annoying but neccessary parts of the game.
Most annoying thing about the game: Mortars. Boy do I hate those things...

Overall, Cossacks is a fun game and worth the 40 bucks. It'll make you pull your hair out for a while but once you get the hang of it, it's really quite enjoyable.

Summary: Love this game
Review: Can't say enough good about this game...it blows Age of Empires away. Nothing like watching a pike formation march into your grapeshot. :) I can't wait for the updated version!

Rating: 3 stars
Summary: Almost as good as Age Of Empires
Review: The building, units, development of resorces and gameplay is essentially the same as AOE. The interface is confusing and difficult to manage (right/left click). The graphics are slightly better than AOE and the game is slow compared to AOE.

Plus:
Great campaigns.
Large scale armies (much larger than AOE).
Better resources management.

Cons:
Not as good nor fluid as AOE.
Game is not as addictive as AOE or C&C or Starcraft.

Overall: if you like the historical period and want to play with units of that time, this is a good game. Otherwise it's just AOE stuck in the 17th century.

Summary: Best RTS ever
Review: The game idea itself is not much different from AOE, but the graphics, sound, and especially the ability to arrange units into formations adds some missing touches. I personally love the Battle Scenarios, which allow you to re-enact a historic battle ...saves time and gives you the opportunity to focus on tactics. Especially fun to play on the internet against another human - which is always a greater challenge then AI.
Great game! If you liked Dune II, Dune 2000, or AOE don't miss it!

Summary: Tactician's Dream
Review: I should imagine the technical & gameplay concepts have been covered fairly well by the other reviewers. I must re-iterate the complexity of the game itself coupled with the diverse tactics you can use makes this game a must for strategy loons. The graphics flow smoothly always, no hangups on installation or during running (even with 8,000 troops on screen). Apart from the selection of campaigns with preset missions, you can also design your own map & select your opponents. The artificial intelligence on this game is superb, but should you suspect your skills have exceeded the game (unlikely on hardest setting), try an internet game. This is utterly priceless, you can play in teams or alone and it's simply the best. I must warn you, 8 hours can disappear in the blink of an eye when doing this, you just keep playing again & again. Tip: When you start a net game that looks like it may take a while to conclude, make sure you have food near your PC as you'll be reluctant to leave the room!

Summary: Not enough time to enjoy it
Review: I used to be an addict player, especially spending time on strategy/warfare games, but being a father now, I don't have enough time to spend on the game anymore. I've bought this game because it sounded like a terrific war game. And I think this game is a great for somebody can spend hours and hours to play it and enjoy it. I have only a couple of hours a day, and some times that's not enough even to build all your necessary facilities to start really playing. The game has plenty of stuff to do: build houses, municipal buildings, factories, mines and so on. You need to raise armies consisting of different troops, train them, elevate them to different level, and lead hundreds of units to the war, or defend your own territory. You can change landscapes, use battle ships, conquer castles. I think this game has a fantastic potential for people who have plenty of time on their hands. I wish I could enjoy it. And by the way, this game loads very slowly, sometimes messes your system up, and creates lockups or freezes. And it is not because of the system I have. I have a brand new PC overloaded with everything one need to challenge the professional work schedule these days.

Summary: good game, with 1 or 2 drawbacks
Review: It's a small break from AOK, but the configuration makes it seem like SF copied off of one of Microsofts best-sellers. I like the 16-18 c. timeline, because I like the "mass"-troop(generaly speaking) tactics. The first drawback, besides the copy of the config., is that the training costs and speed seems excessive for the time period. The other drawback is that the upkeeps seem excessive because you have to build all these mills and goldmines, and then train peasants to run them, to maintan your army. I think that its a good game, but I also think that you should vist [the website] to download the demo and play it before actually buying the full version.

Summary: let's talk about it
Review: Yes, everyone is right. But you have to admit that it is an upgrade from the classics such Warcraft and Starcraft. The game is good with graphics and control. But yes one little guy with very hair on a horse comes riding in can take over your whole entire city that you have worked so hard on. I do love the game, though. I have read that someone compared this Age Of Empires. I have that one as well. It is also a very good game. [...]

Summary: Great...if you're into napoleanics.
Review: Decent graphics for the huge number of units. Moderate variety among nations. Very playable. Enjoyable endgame;whereas many games become tedious once victory is a foregone conclusion, this one makes razing the enemies town epic and fun. The computer player is too easily outsmarted by any serious gamer (although this is a problem common to many games).
