Rating: Summary: So much fun! Review: This game has the best features ever seen in any game! The AI is beutifull, physics is included, and it it, the best game for a long while, of its kind!
Rating: Summary: Simply amazing! Review: I remember reading about Black and White a few months ago, and saying, "That will take another two years to make!" because of all of it's innovations. Well, imagine my suprise when I saw it sitting on my store's shelf! I snagged a copy and popped it into the computer...The storyline in a nutshell is that you play a god, and you have to make the people in each land believe in you. You have miracles to help you, along with a pet animal that helps you accomplish this. Graphically, this thing is AMAZING. There is day and night, weather effects, spell effects, sprawling landscapes, and of course, your pet. Every detail is represented beautifully. And if you register the game (if the process ever works out as of 3/31/01 with the website), the weather conditions actually coincide with your current weather in real life! In fact, you can even let the game use Outlook Express to name the inhabitants of your land. As for the sound of the game, it is of course top notch. From the sounds of the inhabitants screaming as you pick them up and fling them into the air to the of your full sized-pet walking around, each sound is captured accurately. But what about the creature itself? Imagine an incredibly complex Tamagachi. From the start, it is small and doesn't know a whole lot about the world, but if you teach it how to do tasks by your example, your pet will learn them. When your pet does something you like, rub it's stomach to tell him that you like what he is doing, or if it does something you don't like, slap it to let him know that he shouldn't do that! After a while, you can go off and do other things, and not have to worry about your pet because it will eventually be able to take care of itself. It will also eventually grow to titanic proportions. The way the pet's learning is handled is simply amazing. And if you want, you can put your pet on the Internet and have everyone see it. Black and White is one of those rare games that makes you spend days in front of the computer, stopping only to eat and use the bathroom, and sometimes you may not even do that! Bear in mind that you have to spend a LOT of time taking care of your pet, because depending on how you feed or teach it, and the creature that you choose, it may take from twenty to forty hours for your pet to grow to full maturity!! Once you're done, of course, you can go on and compete in multiplayer. This game is set to become one of the greatest games of all time. Say goodbye to your social life!
Rating: Summary: A Brilliant Technology Demo Review: I looked forward to Black and White for months before its release. The day it came out, I went out and purchased it immediately. For an entire week, I played B&W relentlessly. It was at the end of that week that the novelty of the graphics and the control system wore off and I realized just what I was doing in the game. I was spending hour after hour casting spells, uprooting trees, and farming to support my villagers (they can do very little on their own). My creature was very good at watering plants and filling my woodpile, but I had to babysit even him and force him to eat and stay healthy. On top of coping with those problems, the game forces you to solve ridiculous puzzles and perform a multitude of mundane tasks (find sheep, play musical rocks, shadow a monk, etc.). Overall, I think that B&W had a great concept, perhaps too good (and broad) of a concept to be properly executed. My two star rating reflects the initial level of fun that can be had with this game, as well as the frustration that it dissolves into. With so many good games out right now (Tropico, Baldur's Gate II, AOE II, Europa Universalis, Tribes II, No One Lives Forever, and many others), I cannot see any reason that anyone should waste precious time and money on the stupendiously flawed Black and White.

Rating: Summary: I just didn't get it and you shouldn't either!! Review: I read all the reviews and since I love god-games, I ran right out and bought Black & White as soon as it hit the shelves. Let me start by saying the graphics are great. Very lush environment and an extraordinary amount of detail. The AI is also incredible and far surpasses anything created up to this point. The controls, for all their faults, are generally good for the scope of what they're trying to do. The problem with Black & White is that is tries too hard to do WAY too much. There are a million things to do on each level (save people from drowning, solve stone puzzles, etc.) but the devil and angel guides say nothing about what has to be done in order to advance. And approximately 1% of the missions are fun. The rest are BORING. It takes literally FOREVER to get your creature to grow, so there wasn't enough reward for me to continue to train him. And the villagers, ack!, are as stupid as your creature is smart. I actually tracked individual, employed villagers and watched them wander around in a circle for days. Plus, nothing really exciting ever happens. Seriously, on some levels, the cutscenes were the most exciting part, next to beating up on another creature. That doesn't happen very often and seems pointless when it does, since creatures don't die and it doesn't impress the villagers much. The graphics, the creature AI and great environment are ruined by the gameplay. What will be interesting to see is who uses these phenomenal elements to create a game that is actually fun and less of a chore than Black and White. Until then, in my opinion, don't bother with this one.
Rating: Summary: Don't bother Review: This game looked cool. This game had fairly good reviews. But... I hated having to micromanage every little detail. I found the controls confusing and buggy- I was unable to attach my creature's leash to anything at all, for example. The tutorial was lacking in much basic information, and I couldn't find where to learn this stuff. I was thrown into a game with my villagers whining about needing food, housing, mercy (whatever!) etc, and I didn't know how to help the little jerks. Plus, the biggest drawback was how you navigate around the world. I guess I have a bad sense of direction, because I couldn't find anything. And all the swooping and twirling gave me motion sickness- honestly! I tried sitting down to read after playing, and almost got sick! Try something else.
Rating: Summary: If you have Windows98/ME & A LOT of Ram. You need see this.. Review: I saw some people have problems running this game. If your system is Windows98/ME and you have more than 512 MB memory in stalled, you need to see this ... otherwise you will get game crashes more frequently ... not just in Black & White, but other games as well. You need to follow the workaround method as follows.
I first come across this knowledge from www.nvidia.com FAQ : Windows 98 and ME were based on the original Windows 95 kernel which was never designed for handling a lot of memory. These systems will experience various operational difficulties if more than 512MB physical memory is installed. These problems are due to how the 32-bit protected-mode cache driver (VCache) for Windows 9x/ME reserves memory. With more than 512MB memory, VCache may reserve most of the virtual addresses available. This issue does not affect Microsoft Windows XP or Windows 2000. Directions for correcting this problem are outlined in Microsoft's Knowledge Base article number 253912: [...]
CAUSE :
The Windows 32-bit protected-mode cache driver (Vcache) determines the maximum cache size based on the amount of RAM that is present when Windows starts, or 800MB, whichever is less. Vcache then reserves enough memory addresses to permit it to access a cache of the maximum size so that it can increase the cache to that size if needed.. These addresses are allocated in a range of virtual addresses from 0xC0000000 through 0xFFFFFFFF (virtual address occupy between 3 gigabyte and 4 gigabyte area - a space of only 1 gigabytes) known as the system arena.
On computers with large amounts of RAM, the maximum cache size can be large enough that Vcache consumes nearly all of the addresses in the system arena, leaving little virtual memory addresses available for other system process.
This problem may occur more readily with Advanced Graphics Port (AGP) video adapters because the AGP aperture is also mapped to addresses in the system arena. For example, if Vcache is using a maximum cache size of 800 MB and an AGP video adapter has a 128-MB aperture mapped, there is very little address space remaining for the other system code and data that must occupy this range of virtual addresses.
WORKAROUND :
- Add the MaxFileCache line as follows in the System.ini file to reduce the maximum cache size that Vcache uses to 512 MB (512x1024 =524288 KB. Note: The value for these settings are in kilobytes) or less :
[VCache]
MaxFileCache=524288
- Then reboot computer to have setting take effect. You should suffer FAR LESS crashes in many games. Your game can still crash, though. But it will be due to other problems - game bugs, drivers too old, etc.
Rating: Summary: Bugs? What Bugs? Villagers? Curse Them! Review: Well I read a whole load of reviews here stating that the game have more bugs than any game ever made. I don't know about PC version but the Mac version of the game is nearly flawless, never crashed on my iMac and I've been playing it for several months now.
Yes, I agree the villagers are the biggest whiners (now we finally understand God why is that when we ask for something He doesn't respond and so we think He is busy...well may be he is). They can't do anything until pointed by you they will; sometimes I just want to blast them all into the oblivion!!!! They will rather be homeless than actually try and build homes BY THEMSELVES! I can give those instructions on how to do it, it's very simple ;)
Another thing is the manual. It does not tell you what makes you good or evil. I'm trying to do everything good but for everyone in the game I am Lucifer, but my Titan is Archangel (And he thinks I am a good god, smart guy). So what the heck?
Out of 100 I give it 90.
And I HOPE!!! they will improve those things in B&W2.
Rating: Summary: The Black and White of Black and White Review: A wonderful game of playing god, where the people are at your mercy. The bad part about this game would have to be the length of it. Once you complete the game you are left hanging for more. The good part... those five levels are a blast as you raise a creature to be a giant.
Rating: Summary: Pretty good! Review: I really love this game. although taking care of the villages can be quite grueling, it's still a good game. you are god, you control your villages, you have cute little creature and you do quests. here's the story: you are a new god, you have your own little village and creature, when this other god, Nemesis, comes and destroys everything, wanting to be the only god. you're supposed to defeat Nemesis. I recommend this game.
