Review: I can sum this up in 20 words or less: THIS GAME IS, AND WILL BE THE GAME OF THE YEAR!!!

Summary: The most addictive game I've ever played
Review: It took a while to get a hang of the controls and the less-than-complete manual forced me to get some game play tips on the internet, but now that the fog has lifted, this is an incredible game. I'm on the internet right now because I know that if I start playing it tonight, I won't stop for at least four or five hours. I probably won't be able to stop myself, however, so I'm not sure why I bother. To those that complain that there is no real freedom I must ask: Did you really expect the freedom to do ANTHING? This is still a computer game. Controlled by 1's and 0's just like everything else. What amazes me is the freedom the game does give you, which greatly surpasses anything I've ever seen before. The number of objects, people, and animals that you can interact with at any time during the game blows my mind. Everything is three dimensional and the only things you can't really destroy, alter, or move are the water, sky, and the terrain itself. I've typically not be a big fan of the real-time strategy genre in the past, but I highly recommend this game. By the way, the game runs almost perfectly (a little choppy now and then) on my HP Pavilion w/ PIII 450, 128MB RAM, & 32MB ATI Radeon PCI.

Summary: Frustrating Fun
Review: I have played this game a LOT since I got it, and I'm still not sure what to make of it. One thing is certain - Black & White is more of an experiment than a game. The backbone of B&W is a god RTS - you have little villages on tropical islands which you watch over as their guardian deity. You can play either as Good or Evil or anywhere in between - anything you want to do is allowed. To top it off, you have a gigantic creature (like a 50 foot monkey) acting as your pupil/pet in the world, which you can train to do your bidding.

Your creature is definitely the highlight of the game - the Artifical Intelligence is revolutionary and absolutely amazing. They watch watch you, imitate you, and learn from you. You can teach them things like go find food when the village store is empty and poop in the fields instead of on people's houses. Eventually I've heard you can teach them really complex tasks like planting and growing forests. However, it takes hours of dedication to get your creature beyond the simplest of things. To me, the pace of creature learning is just too slow. Casual gamers will not get much from the game with only a few hours of playtime. Also, the methods which the game expects you to communicate with your creature are usually hidden from you and often subtle. Often my advisors would comment that my creature had learned something completely different from what I was trying to teaching him.

Take away your creature (which actually happens on one level) and you have a generic, shallow RTS game, with limited options. The hyped ability to play as either Good or Evil is also very shallow and limited. Both sides have to impress villagers into worshiping them - Good gods do so by casting Good miracles, Evil gods cast evil miracles. That's all there is to it. There is no strategy except to train your creature to do your work, so that you are effectively 2 places at once. Supposedly the land would change to reflect your alienment, but the only thing I have witnessed is my temple growing horns when I'm evil, and doves circle the temple when I'm good. Many promised features of the game obviously did not make it into the final release.

The single player story mode in Black and White is very good yet riddled with bugs and uncertain goals. Constantly you are presented with moral challenges that push you to do good while testing your patience. For example, 3 lazy sailors need help getting their boat afloat, but they are so annoying in their songs that you will certainly be tempted to chuck the little twerps out to sea without their boat. Then there are quests which are so vague you don't know what to do, or at least logical solutions do nothing. Plus, many many bugs seem to halt your progress as well. One quest with some stolen cattle I completely on my first play thru, but on my second time around the same actions did nothing. ???

In the end, I'd recommend you buy the game after the patch comes out, just to see what the fuss is about.

Summary: Not Just A Game. It's An Experience.
Review: When I ordered this game, other reviews I had read made me very concerned that it might not run. It turns out that I did have some problems - but not the problems I expected to have. When I ran the game, I got a fatal exception error every time. However, when I went into the setup menu and disabled the sound, the game ran perfectly. Ironically, it was the grpahics, not the sound, that I expected to have the problem with. I don't have a fancy video card, and my computer's hardware lies somewhere between the game's minumum and recommened requirements. Therefore, I feared the graphics might look poor or be choppy, but they're smooth and beautiful. That still leaves me with the sound issue. It looks like I'll need to get a new sound card because my current one isn't DirectX 7.0 compliant. Meanwhile, I'll play with no sound. The game is drop-dead gorgeous to look at. There is a learning curve to using the interface, but it's not nearly as bad as some have made it out to be. Once I get more used to it, I think I'll really be able to act quickly. The graphics and the game's concept make this an amazing experience, which will be even more amazing once I'm able to hear it. Despite the setback I had, I am recommending this game wholeheartedly.

Summary: Read the James Perkins Review
Review: For adults, the James Perkins review of Black and White nails this game. Read it, then skip purchasing this game. I was very excited about getting it after reading/believing the hype. The creature and its "leashes" drove me insane, and detracted from the small amount of entertainment I had begun having from solving the puzzles in the game. Maneuvering is (IMHO) counter-intuitive, especially which way the POV revolves based on the sliding of the mouse. And the forced tutorial is mind-numbing. The only worse "forced" passage in a game is the part of NOLF where you have to ask the fat industrialist all of those inane questions.

Summary: Overrated
Review: I really loved this game when I first got it. For about 3 days. Then you begin to see the bugs. Then you begin to see how scripted the game is. Open-ended? Give me a break. The single-player version is irritating and boring.

The multi-player aspect of this game is even worse. Even if you manage to find a game where the opposing creature hasn't been hacked using a trainer, there is simply no challenge. How to win? Learn how to throw fireballs well. The size of your town? Your "helpful" creature? Irrelevant. Multi-player is akin to the 8-bit NES game Duck Hunt. Scratch that. Duck Hunt was much more fun.

This game is a total waste of money. I do admit that it is entertaining when you first start it up... I was crazy about this game for a short period. Hence the incredible raves & reviews that are now littering the web. Give it a couple of months, see if they patch some of the bugs, and let the hype settle a bit. Most of the people who have spent any considerable amount of time with this game abhor it. No replay value, and very limited appeal the first time around. Good idea, poor implementation.

Oh and as far as the patches go... well the folks at Lionhead have apparently disappeared. A month has gone by since release, and no patches. I really wanted to give this game 1 star to drive the ratings down. But in all honesty, it is worth 2 stars of entertainment. Don't pay more than $10 for this game. Else, you will regret it.

Summary: 1 star because it doesn't work??
Review: First of all, I'd like to point that the reviewers who can't get the game to work should not be commenting on this top class game. Where is the sense on giving a game 1 star when they haven't actually played it!!!! Ive had this game for 2 weeks now and I have hardly stopped playing it. The are so many cool touches and the creature is an absolutely remarkable feature that make this game really stand from all the other God games. I just want to keep it short and say that B and W is tops and you really need to play it to see what you are missing.

Summary: The Game of the Year for 2001
Review: When I first saw this game in a magazine almost three years ago, I was hooked. True, the waiting for this game was too long as Lionhead delayed the game about three times, but it was worth it. This game combines many popular genres and is appealing to many audiences. The gameplay is first of it's kind and probably will never be matched. The creature and town people's intelligence is beyond Half-life remarkable A.I., which is quite a feat. Kudos to Lionhead for making this game and I will cast any vote for this game to be game of the year for any year.
