Summary: Great Achievment... still the sims.
Review: Well it is kind of fun. Who doesn't like being a god? You can fling infidels into cliffs. You can send a giant cow to attack and destroy villages.

Resource management is tricky you can't manage it too much or you cripple the village. You can't neglect them or you cripple the village. But other than that it's the sims amped up to a 60 foot cow.

I got bored after the third island and haven't touched it since.

Summary: Heavenly idea gone to ...
Review: I really enjoy strategy games. They can be intellectually challenging and provide an environment where you can step outside your normal, day-to-day life, for a little while.

I have played many different games as the industry has evolved over the years (my first computer was a Commodore 64-how many of you have heard of those before?!). In all my years of computer game interaction, B&W is, by far, the buggiest program I have ever encountered. I feel uncomfortable being so negative because I really want to like this game. But I have had the privilege of being a Beta tester for some other commercial releases and I can not think of a single instance of testing where I have been totally unable to play the game. In contrast, I have tried, sincerely tried, to run this game only to be completely disappointed as the game froze, time and time again. I thought the problem might be my system, so I tried installing on multiple systems and multiple OS, all with equally poor results. As a consumer, who shelled out ... for this game, I can only state how very disappointed I am in Lionhead/EA. This is the type of experience which causes me to doubt whether or not I will ever risk ... on another one of their products.

Summary: 5 Stars When You First Start Playing It, Dwindles Down to 3
Review: Black & White has been heralded as a masterpiece by many computer game reviewers, but my experience with it was the same as my time playing The Sims. I was flabbergasted at first, but quickly lost interest as the "unique approach" of the game wore off.

The "unique approach" for this game is the training of a creature that you use as your Titan to watch over and convert the worshippers at various villages. The supposed A.I. of the creature becomes simple programming after you figure out how most of the creatures are meant to behave. Furthermore, the storyline, puzzles and sub-plots included are interesting at first and add to the overall experience but these too become tedious as they aren't interesting enough to make the game last.

This game is capable of an online multiplayer versus mode. I never tried it and it seems like a game that is better suited to the stand-alone (the game itself) version rather than a multiplayer matchup as the story is what the programmers used to try and push the game over the hump. It would still be interesting though to play a multiplayer game considering this isn't your typical shoot 'em up or strategy game. Furthermore, explore the internet as there are additional creatures to play that you can download. Also, there are the usual amount of bugs in this game (perhaps more than some first releases) and as I write this review, the patch for the game is only in beta stage. (Being tested. The patch is downloadable at the company's website but there is a disclaimer for it.)

While I liked the game but didn't think it was good enough to be considered a "classic" I can see how many people would thoroughly enjoy this game. Myst meets Warcraft would be my description of this. I would take time reading all the reviews because you can get a good idea if you're the type of gamer that would love this game. Not my cup of tea, but a good game.

Summary: bugalicious
Review: i have bought and played many games for many years. this is one of the first that i have bought and NOT played. can't beleive they'd release a game with so many issues. i have a P3 800, a Geforce2 PRO 64MB vid card, and blah blah blah none of the issues i have had are related to my machine as 34 other games i own, old and new, d3d and opengl, multiplayer or not, ALL OF THEM RUN FINE EXCEPT THIS POS. what a shame, in this case i have to recommend getting a warez version that u can hopefully play, as i have spent my money supporting these idiots and i unfortuneatly cannot enjoy it at all. it does not run at all, it is game issues, and not my machine. look at their forums, i'd say u got a 50/50 shot with this one. and that's with good hardware. good luck to you, please get the warez version i am so ashamed of having supported these "developers" - next time maybe they will think twice if people stop buying the game. i wish i could tell u about the game but i cant. guess i'll wait for the patch to come out, IF that helps, and normally it helps SOME things but patches never help all, btw, i have two more weeks to wait for that patch as of right now, and i have not been able to play it for longer than that. other games with such serious issues have had decent beta patches to tide u over, their beta is as much ... as the buggy retail version.

Summary: it doesnt even work
Review: I bought this game expecting great things, however i am pretty sure i was fooled, lionhead studios didn't make this game, microsoft did, because it was released well before it was ready to be played. I found a support section on their page (tech support forums have been locked by the site admins lol) that describes the problem i am having loading the game, however the advice they give to fix it does not work and although i have emailed them they have not responded to help me with the problems i am having. apparently people with an always on internet connection frequently have problems getting the game to load. seems like a monstrous oversite to me, considering how many people have dsl and cable today. i suppose they may fix this issue in their first patch, but that is not due to come out until july 2, and i have had the game for weeks now. still cant play it. and i've seen patches before, the problem may or may not be fixed, there is no way to know till it comes out. so i sit here with a worthless copy of black and white (and i've tried everything, believe me i build computers this game is BUGGED) well good luck if u decide to buy it.

Summary: too many bugs.
Review: black and white is a fun game with great graphics which could have done well.the main problem is you buy the game and find you cant play it for all the bugs and glitches.the games support is also poor.there is talk of a patch but i think b/w is gonna be one of those games that will never run as it should no matter how many fix it patches lionhead/ea come up with.i give it about 5 out of ten .but if your computer is not at least double the recommended minimum requirements stay well clear

Summary: So much potential... So much frustration...
Review: As many others have noted, Black & White offers so much; but it is still not without its shortcomings. The graphical look and feel of the game is tremendous. B&W looks beautiful. And the concept of "playing God" opens a number of interesting ethical decisions for the player. In a favorable review on NPR, they mentioned that Beta testers in the USA tended to be a "good" God; while those in Europe were inclined to be "evil." Of course, what wasn't mentioned was if the Beta testers complained about the difficult interface. The "hand of God" is harder to manage than it should be. This makes it a challenge to get where you want to go. Also, the villagers are as insipid as the creature is glorious. The AI that makes the creature learn is the best I have seen anywhere. If only 1/10th of that AI power was used in the villagers. They are the single most annoying feature of the game. All in all, this game can give you hours of enjoyment - if you can look past its shortcomings.

Summary: Decent...Borrow it
Review: I believe that many people buy this game hoping to have gigantic creatures and raining down hell and throwing villagers around -which can be done- but it is offput by a VERY annoying system of village management...and whenever you want to change your alignment it takes forever to change. As for your creature, It takes hours and hours of playing to make him big enough to really have FUN, and the game is only 5 levels long! It's simply not worth what it costs, despite an appealing show of graphics and humor. Worth trying so that you can have a bit of fun, but by Dune 2000 or Settlers or Citizen Kabuto instead.

Summary: Great idea, lousy execution
Review: This a a very clever game with rich design features that play very well through the first level. After that it becomes a matter of personal creative ability to stay in the game which continually crashes. I would love to play this game. I object to Lionhead Studios and EA games making anyone who buys this game a paying pilot program participant. A patch has been promised for months. The distributor and creator have had very little to say on the subject. Overall I am very disapointed.

Summary: Great game for the summer, bad game when in school
Review: I just got Black and White in the mail today. I was a little scared because I had read both good and bad reviews for it. After playing for game for about 3 hours my opinion is that this is a completely amazing game. The graphics are fantastic and the controls are also great once you figure out how to use them. However, this is the kind of game you will need to devote a lot of time to. If you are the kind of person who likes to beat this game in one day this isn't the game for you. Also, if you are in school I would wait for the summer to buy this game. However, since it is summer now I would seriously consider buying this game. It is worth every penny, I promise!!!
