Summary: Not Worth the money
Review: This game grabbed my attention off the shelf, but after taking it home installing it and watching a great intro the game petered out quick.Gameplay is horrible the screen movement is even worse but the overall theme of the game is great.I also feel that the choice of creatures was lacking i found many downlaods for this game on the net. to solve this problem but it isn't worth the time.I feel this game was a bad investment...

Summary: Cool, but didn't last in the long run
Review: Black and White got a number of things very right. Graphics are cool, the sounds are fun, it has an unusual but effective interface, and the quests move you along nicely. Most successful are the little details that promote user-customization; I liked being able to create my own logo which then appears over my conquered villages (and is a big tatoo on my creature's belly). Renaming the villagers with everybody in my email list is fun too, and my WinAmp tunes having an effect in my Black and White world is a nice touch too.

But I have to confess, I got bored after a little while. Everything I did in the game was exciting the first couple weeks I played the game, but then it all lost its lustre. Being a Good god is a pain and requires a lot of micromanagement... which is pretty much the same for being a Bad god. I found internet play to be exceedingly boring - the creature fights weren't that interesting to me and there didn't seem to be much point in varying strategy (although I must confess I didn't do a lot of online B&W because I was so unimpressed the first couple times I tried it).

All in all, Black and White gave me a fun couple of game-binge days, but I got bored after a couple of weeks. I haven't played it for months now.

Summary: Great concept, medicore game
Review: The graphics and idea behind this game is spectacular, I just really didn't find it much fun. I thought it took too much effort to train the creature to do anything interesting and my interest waned quickly.

Summary: What a fantastic game!!!
Review: Black and White is a tremendous game! In it you play a god and you have control over all of your subjects, and that means being in charge of building their houses, deciding how many people will worship you at a time, and who will be sacrificed for the good of the religion. Those are just samples of the sort of control you have over your people. However, it isn't just a Simcity style 'God Game' - there is also the tremendously entertaining feature of the 'creature' in Black and White. You, as a god, exercise your influence over your creature - you can choose the tiger (a good fighter), the monkey (a good thinker) or the bull (a combo of both). These creatures start small and as you teach them more, they grow in size. After a while, from observing your actions (such as creating water for crops or forests for building), they learn many of your skills. So instead of constantly monitoring the state of your people, the creature does quite a bit of it for you.

In Black and White you must also conquer opponents by expanding your 'influence' - it grows as more and more people believe in you. By impressing opposing villagers you can gradually win them over, and they start to believe in you rather than their current god. This is not a one-way process; rather, you must always make sure your villagers believe in you otherwise they will lose faith in you. Ultimately, Black and White is a very complex game with subtle nuances all over it, and since it always has something new or unique happening in it, you'll never get sick of it.

Summary: I am The Black And White God
Review: This game is the greatest!! If your just starting to play this game be a bad guy. And pick the bad tiger as your creature! That tiger never loses a fight! ... And I have one question, I heard that you can play this game on the internet against other people who have the game! I was wondering how you do that. ...

Summary: Interesting, but too much work for a game
Review: Way too much micromanagement, and inside tricks you have to learn about via the internet or a strategy guide. It does have great graphics, and is interesting to look at. I personally don't agree with their interface choice when casting 'miracles' which require you to draw out a symbol with your mouse - just give us a key, or a key that pulls up a menu.

Summary: It's not Populous
Review: Yes, the graphics are stunning, but gameplay gets too bogged down in minute details. If you want to burn up some time this is the game for that. My overall impression of the game is that they took the Populous premise and dumped all the details of The Settlers into the mix. In Settlers attending to the many details adds flavor to the game; in Black and White all those details simply reduce the godlike status of the player to something like slavery. The AI Creature is a nice addition, but it should learn in parallel with the main character not take perhaps half the gameplay time to train. I give this one three stars only.

Summary: A.I. Good, gameplay bad
Review: Enough has already been said of the creature avatars in this game. Their AI is fantastic and they are truly fun to play with. Once past that, however, one realizes that there isn't much else to this game. Movement is awkward and difficult, the cities are unmanageable, the citizens whine constantly and irritatingly about things that they should be taking care of themselves and the missions are poorly designed. One mission simply requires you to follow a monk to his secret prayer spot by staying behind him as he walks. This is a mission that seems desinged to capitalize on the challenge presented by the horrifically innacurrate movement controls. In another mission some of your people are kidnapped by barbarians who demand animals as a ransom so they can start a circus (?!?) And where does one find folk with the unmitigated gall to make ransom demands to a very visible deity and not expect to be smited for it? Yet another mission has a pied piper figure leading away the village children. For some undisclosed reason, you can't simply pick this problem person up and toss him far out to sea; you have to have your creature capture him. Great ideas, poor execution. But did I mention that the creatures are fun?

Summary: A Good Game, But Some Offensive Material
Review: This game is really amazing, don't get me wrong, but there are a few "minor" flaws with it. First of all, what is up with the fact that you can see your creature going to the bathroom?!! That's just a little disturbing... Also, the game is VERY sacreligious, letting you be a god when there is no master creator in sight. Otherwise, if you can ignore these MAJOR discrepancies, the game is good. The zooming is incredible. You can zoom out to see the entire island and surrounding ocean, or you can zoom in to see a worm in an apple on a barrel. Gameplay is very smooth, with a good solid story and plenty of action. Also, there is the fact that you are free to do basically whatever you want, only strapped in by a few Gold Story Scrolls, which make you follow some kind of plot. The graphics are great, with a very real-world feel to everything. I also think the fact that you use a floating hand to do everything is pretty cool. You can pick up(and toss!) villagers, and if your creature's being bad, why, just slap him around a bit. The Leashes you use to control your creature are very easy to use. All in all, I'd rate this game about 3.99999 stars, because of the "minor" issues I mentioned.

Summary: Potential Wasted is Worse Than No Potential at All
Review: I was excited to first read about this game. Advertising, screen shots, and packaging all served to get me pretty excited about this game. The premise of being able to play god, no constraints, no need to conform to a programmer's notions of good and evil, just free form, do what you like, make the world the way you want it to be sounded like what I've always wanted from a computer game.

So much potential...

The game's concept is wonderful; You are god, you have a creature you train to do good or evil who represents you to your people. You may either help, or hinder your people, making their lives either heaven or hell.

The problem with the game is the interface. At no point in the game, other than the training scenarios, can you simply kick back, and enjoy what you are doing.

The game actually PREVENTS you from having fun.

As was pointed out in earlier reviews, you can never take your eye off your creature. If you do, he will go around making trouble, and generally being a pain. You can never take your eye off of your people. If you do, they immediately start to die off, complain, and generally stand around and do nothing. Add to this, the MINUTE you get a handle on scrambling back and forth between training your creature, and helping your people, BAM!....the game goes and yanks you away from what you are doing, and sends you on an artificial quest where you get to do exactly what you were doing before, but at a higher level of difficulty.

I have that problem in real life! I don't spend cash for that kind of head-ache and call it entertainment!

DO yourself a favor and steer clear of this wrist busting, brain numbing, angst ridden mess and go get Diablo II for some REAL gaming fun!
