Rating: Summary: Awesome game Review: It all comes down to this....you have to get this game. It's such a good price, spend the cash get the game, and sit at your computer playing this for the rest of your life.there is ONE and only ONE problem with this game, SOME of the cinematics are black and white cartoons, not 3-D models. you can do so much with this game, controls are a bit tough to master at first, but once you have them down pat, you won't stop playing. the gameplay is 3-D, which isn't what you would expect for such a price, the graphics are exelent. this is the first space strategy game to demonstrate the vastness of space, your open to all new flanking tactics now, lure your enemy some where, then come down on top of him. anyone who has seen star trek II the wrath of khan will enjoy doing things like that.... basically, you have this one, lare command ship, and throughout the game you upgrade it, you research new weapons, armor and other technologies. build fighters in your command ship, or build larger ships on the outside, like a carrier(for your fighters), or destroyer ect. i recomend this game to anyone who has a computer, and a remote intrest in any strategy games. This game will knock your socks off!
Rating: Summary: wow! Review: I played the first Homeworld. It was pretty good. The plot wasn't very creative but very well done. The interface was easy to use (once you got the hang of it). There was only one problem with it. The early mission were way too easy and the later missions were way too hard. Cataclysm, which picks up where homeworld left off, does much better. The plot concept is kind of lame (brave crew of the Kuun-Lan mining vessel vs. the ancient "Beast" which is bent on galactic domination), but it was done so well that It doesn't matter. The mothership can move, which is a nice improvement. The graphics are at least a bit better. The plot moves faster. I actually liked the Support unit system. In the original, they stopped your fleet from getting too big by limiting the resources you could get, the problem with that being that if they manage to take out your fleet, you lose, whereas now you can build more ships (resources are definatly not a problem!). I liked cataclysm more then homeworld, and anyone who says that it "lacks the charm of the original" can pout.
Rating: Summary: Definately one of my favorite games Review: This game is in my mind one of the best games by sierra. It is definately involved and takes some memorization but once you have it it's awesome. It has excellent graphics but a somewhat limiting interface. you cant scroll freely through the environment but have to stay focused on one of your ships. theres a limit on the amount of ships you can make which is a bummer but the ships that you can make are spectacular.
Rating: Summary: Home World 2 Review: To begin the first Home World is better. In Home World 2 you can't turn unit caps off even in multiplayer! You dont need to refule. And now many non combat ships have guns! For example the resourse prosesers have 3 guns. All this takes a lot of the strategy out of it. The graphics are very good! The best I've seen. Mabe a little better than the first HW(Home World). And you can get very cool battle shots with the very manuverable camra. The music is better than the first HW's music. The music in the first is all hmmming or something. This HW has more of a battle type music. The story is not as good as the first HW eather. This one is more of a battle by battle story. Where as the first one had a story. But it is still better than many others. Multi player is also differnt from the first. You have to build storage things to be able to build more ships, but you can only build so many. I would say if you have the first HW not to get this one. But it's so cheep I say get it. It comes with a thick book about the game.
Rating: Summary: Get it together!! Review: This game has great graphics, but that's about it. The storyline definately needed improving along with the horribly robotic sounding voices. The additions to this game (like support modules and science modules) were the worst. A word to the wise get the original, it is one of the best games I've played. Sierra, I know you guys can come out with more levels and stuff for the original come on!!
Rating: Summary: No one said anything about a patch Review: In order for me to play Cataclysm I had to download a patch. I purchased the game and found out some one had walked off with my orignal Homeworld game. So I reordered it so I could play Cataclysm, but guess what It would not work until I found a patch and coppied it. So I was a little dissapointed, but other than that I have realy enjoyed the game. So if any one else haves a brpblum with the game a patch will fix it and you can enjoy the game. Best wishes Bruce
Rating: Summary: Good Game Review: I enjoyed this game but it is not homeworld. The story behind this game was terrific and would keep you playing for hours. As far as game play it was easy to gather hordes of resource and ships are cheap. Having a limit on my fleet through Source Units is a good idea but does take some getting used to, But I could not figure out why I never had to refuel any of my ships? Cataclysm is worth the money and I will keep playing it but I still have the first Homeworld within easy reach. By the way Cataclysm is XP compatible.
Rating: Summary: let's be fair Review: I think the concept of 3D strategy game is very fine. in fact there are only two up until now, which is the midst of 2002: homeworld, and homeworld catalysm. I own both of those, and spent some time playing them. I quite enjoyed the new concept, all the flat-out 2D strategy seem to lose their color after I played the homeworld series. I forsee that if somebody actually used this idea of 3D strategy and explioted it to the limits, most 2D strategy games would simply go out of business. For the sophiscated players, I too, look forward to something like this ahead. Now catalysm did not make the most out of this innovation. I am not saying it is not worth buying, as mentioned previously, I enjoyed them. But notice how some games lack new ideas but has a lot of goodies in it so people would like them? such games as Diablo2, which is really JUST button bashing and ONLY time consuming. no offense to Diablo2 lovers out there, I too, play that. But you must do a bit of comparison between the different qualities of each game. And for homeworld, it is strictly the opposite of Diablo2- It is rich in its ideas, but lacks the goodies to make it attractive, which in my opinion, explains why it is not even close to the popularity as Diablo2 or Quake for example. It has no movies, has no 'class' (you see a lot about this from other reviews), has no characters(I intend to mean both), no impressive things to put into a movie-trailor type of show-off other then some regular in-game sequences. You will not like it if you only play Final Fantasy X or that sort of thing. There are rooms for improvements. I definitly think there are vast potentials for this game and anything similar. The strategies are infinite and only bound to player's imaginations, and- button clicking speed which I meant to discuss. I need to point out, that 3D micromangement can be a lot of pain since it involves a lot of 2D clicking over a 3D dynamic environment. I hope homeworld 2 puts in some scripting options so people can load up subroutines for groups of units, this should automate a lot of things and reduce the clicking (not my idea origin, forgot who but definitly a brilliant one)(Perhaps this would make the game seem like object-oriented or LISP programming?). Whilest there are huge gaps to be filled by Sierra as for those neat little things to attract public, I hope the revolution continue. Homeworld is a great feat in real time strategy game for the new dimention it introduces. It woke up all the players out there getting bored at the present limits of gaming formats (RPG, fighting, fighting, shooting, shooting, shooting, shooting......). If you are bored too but have not played homeworld yet, get it.
Rating: Summary: This is a STEAL Review: At 9.99 this game is a steal! Cataclysm does not require the old Homeworld game, but I recommend Playing the old Homeworld first, for the sake of the intricate and engaging storyline that etends throughout both games. Although the controls for the game may seem daunting when one first looks at the manual, one quickly learns to command the armada with ease. The support systems used in cataclysm limit the total number of unit you can amass despite the amount of resources a player has. This game's graphics are some of the best I've ever seen, and the variety of ships under a players command is formidable. Slower computers will have some trouble with this game, but lowering the texture quality will speed things back up. $9.99 is a ridiculous price for this game!
Rating: Summary: If you love Homeworld, get one this too!!! Review: Again, great graphics and lots of challenge. If you like Homeworld get this game too.
