Summary: Something to look forward to for x-mas season
Review: Although screen shots are the only tangible evidence of this game's glory, they are very promising as is the quality of the preceeding HOMM series. Can't wait for it to come out!

Review: Stumbling upon HOMM 2 a couple of years ago, I was very impressed with New World Computing's job in taking this kind of gaming genre to the max. Turn based strategy is hard to turn into an exciting computer game, but HOMM 2 delivered. HOMM 3 was a good upgrade with better graphics, easier gameplay, etc, but was still basically HOMM 2. The programmers have totally revamped the engine for the 4th edition though, and I am expecting nothing less than a blockbuster with totally new features while still retaining the character that made HOMM 2 great.

Review: I am a huge fan over heroes 3 but this game has its pros and cons. For example There IS NO RANDOM MAP GENERATOR!!!!!!If they made a platinum edition for this game like heroes 3 and also INCLUDED A RANDOM MAP GENERATOR! then i would run and buy it in a heartbeat. O AND ANYONE WHO HELPED MAKE THIS GAME MIGHT HAVE READ THIS REVIEW U SHOULD GET UP AND PUT ON WAT I PREFERED AND SO MANY OTHERS DID 2.

Summary: Excellent game - better and worse than HoMM 3 however..
Review: Overall, HoMM 4 is a great game! It has all of the elements that made the former releases a success (I've played them all since HoMM "1"), but a few of the changes may not be as exciting as they sounded before release. Heroes are now a major part of your armies.. this is good, and adds some new elements to the game, but on the other hand, building that killer team of creatures isn't as important anymore. Many times, I had groups of heroes stomping down the lands without opposition. Early on, it's too easy to lose a hero (and often the scenario), but later the heroes are too powerful, and there is little need to attain that angel or phoenix to top off your "killer troop". I also found much of the early campaign scenarios too easy. You meet the computer months into the scenarios, and the AI teams have barely built anything, whereas in Heroes 3, they had been hoarding armies for weeks and were very powerful. It's almost as if the game is on "pause" for the AI players while you build up.

Some of the new elements are nice - quests within the scenarios, quest NPCs and extra "things to do". The land is literally saturated with things to visit and level up your heroes, it's almost TOO much. NWC streamlined some of the towns; instead of having 8 and confusing the heck out of you, there's only 6 more distinctive towns, with a specific magic type assigned to them (order, chaos, nature, etc..) The towns coincide with some of the magical paths you took in Might and Magic 8, and make more sense. There are now "technology trees" in each town, where you must choose what direction you want to build (go for angels.. or champions? - you can't do both in the same town). One thing I really like is the addition of caravans to automatically send troops from town to town without having to manually march them down the map, or hire a hero to lead them. One thing I miss, are the hexes in combat mode.. It's hard to tell where your troops are moving (unless I just overlooked something).

The graphics are, of course, top notch and beautiful. The music is once again astounding, with choruses of angels and operatic chants. They make you feel like you are wandering through an elven land in The Lord of the Rings. All the M&M games have had simply some of the best music in gaming..

All in all, HoMM4 is worth the price, but I hope they address some of the simplistic AI in a patch, and maybe tone down the heroes some (they can learn WAY too many skills now, and there are now 5 levels as well, topping out at grandmaster).

Review: I was/am a huge fan of the Heroes series. Was actively involved in the forums and the fan base. Even have a Hero in this game named after my on-line persona.

Couldn't like this game, moved so slow and lost the charm of the previous versions.

It's a shame, hopefully Ubisoft can revive the magic in Heroes 5.......

Summary: 1st time player loves the format and game play, a great buy
Review: I have never run a game as often as I ran Heroes 3. I have owned every version since the first and I even stuck with it through the constant expansions of Heroes 3. That stops with this version. There are many good qualities to the new version: The graphics look better
The cities look better and structures are in consistant spots
Monsters have more unique abilities like genies casting spells form a list of spells
Added unusual features in maps
Cities have a buy all button
You can send armies out without a leader
You can purchase armies from recruitment centers without troops at the recruitment site
More magic schools and more spell variety

However there are huge steps backwards as well:
No random map generator
Cities produce less monster types
You must choose which type of monsters to produce at upper levels
Heroes of one type are all the same.
Game play is much slower.
The expansions out are all about the maps and campaigns not monsters and new features.
The patch from release to current version is bigger than the original program.

In short they have latched on to a give them the basics, add a few map expansions, add a few feature expansions and then release the whole package. I am just waiting for the release with the map generator and all the features added. I think if we got everyone to do this they might just release a finished product to start with. I ,for one, would have rather paid $$ for all the features III shadows of death offered in IV than buying them at $$ peicemeal for two years.

Now if they wanted ideas for expansions things like:
Modual monsters (add wings, xtra hp's, ranged attack)
City revolts
Chaos map that changes every turn
Many new artifacts
Castle walls must be built around each expansion (if your city is attacked non walled expansions are destroyed.
Armies that stay in place 2 turns may build a temporary citadel
Resource market purchases change going rates for resources
Monster upkeep costs

Now if you put two of any of those in an expansion I might buy it. For now I'll wait till I get new features.
