Rating: Summary: A Classic Review: I am glad to see that Civilization boiled down the basics of a great game and made a superb empire building game. Having played Civilization 2, I was a little worried that I'd be stuck micromanaging my empire with trade routes and trying to figure out how taxes and food all went together. They've streamlined the interface and made the game run smoothly. It is very hard to step away from. I also like the online help. I wish they would've put more movies in (like Call to Power) and show the histographs of how your civilization is fairing in the middle of the game. I also wish other civs would respect your boundaries as much as they want you to respect theirs. Overall, I am very happy with my purchase and would recommend anyone wanting an addictive empire building game to purchase Civ 3.
Rating: Summary: Great promise gone bad Review: I was hoping that this game would surpass Civ 2 in both enjoyability and replay value. It didn't do either. It was filled with bugs and it got pretty boring after only a couple days. Save your money and buy something else.
Rating: Summary: Great Simulation! Review: Well I wanna start by saying I love this game I play it whenever I can! I like the realism (in terms of the characters interacting with one another and etc.) in the simulation, and how most characters are realistic to history's portral! Except Chancellor Bismarck's aggressive bevhavior!!! But other than that it is AWESOME! It took time to learn how to keep cash flow and learn the basic functions, but it was fun on the way! If you love strategy, history and war/conquest type games...BUY THIS!!!
Rating: Summary: Add a few good ideas, loose a million Review: ... Civ 3 adds a few cool ideas and better graphics. It looses all semblence of working, and crashes like an airplane without wings. It removes the civolpedia and discriptions of the technologies. It ruins the game with "enchancements" like capturing catapaults. The scenario system pales in comparison with civ 2. And the ...background music... . Buy civ 2...
Rating: Summary: Fun at times, but incredibly annoying! Review: I'll start out by saying this is a great game. It's very well done, the graphics and sound are good, and the gameplay is great. The music is definitely not as good as the Civ2 music, it's just kind of background music with very very repetitive themes. Gameplay is the same, build cities, train units, colonize, negotiate, etc. Here comes the annoying part. Diplomacy is incredibly annoying. The computers will seem to gang up on you, even on low level AI. You will have to struggle to keep up with the computers as they race through the tech tree. And there are moments when you just want to bash your monitor in. Moments like when a longbowman defeats an infantryman, or a cavalry destroys a tank. And there are NO CHEAT CODES. Espionage, also, has been made very expensive and risky. In addition to all this naval combat and artillery have been rendered almost worthless. This game doesn't seem to have been designed with the intentions of making a fun game. It seems like it was made to follow up Civilization 2. I think this is its mortal flaw. It's historically inaccurate and incredibly frustrating.
Rating: Summary: Great way to waste time Review: I've played this game a lot since it came out and have not had the problems some people have mentioned. It's extremely addicting and that can be a bad thing. Next thing you know you've been playing for 6 hours straight. My only complaint with it is that the scenarios are basically just different maps and you do not get the setups of history as in Civ II. That's a major letdown as far as I'm concerned. However, there are many improvements also, the main one for me being empire boundaries.
Rating: Summary: Excellent! A fine game Review: Firaxis has outdone themselves on this one. I love it. The only cons I can think of are: 1 You can't play it all day. 2: The larger the civ is, the longer the turn, and 3 The AI can beat an inexperienced player almost at once. The basic plot of the game is you are the leader of a civilization, and you have to outwit other AI leaders to become the top civ in the world. Each civ has their own traits and a unique unit Ex. Persians built immortals instead of swordsmen. Along with this, you have to expand and build culture so your cities don't revolt. IF YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND THIS REVIEW, TAKE MY ADVICE AND BUY IT IF YOU LOVE STRATEGY GAMES. This is the best one I've ever played.
Rating: Summary: Extremely irritating Review: Why are Ironclads sinking my battleships and Knights taking out my tanks??? Have the game designers never opened a history book or something? This game is slow and extremely, painfully tedious, especially toward the end when you have to control upwards of 30 or 40 units, one at a time. It has a few interesting add ons, like mobilizing your civilization for war and strategic resources, but I just can't deal with my marines being slaughtered by muskets! Civ III is a huge step back from Alpha Centuri, where they specifically addressed and solved this BS. I highly recommend getting Alpha Centuri over this game.
Rating: Summary: A good money waster Review: Civ1 and Civ2 were always my favourite games and I bought Civ3. It was horrible! The developers have tried hard to destroy everything. Such as: Absence of Zones of Control (ZOC) makes available only 1 strategy in the battle: Brute force "Reality" means that many units (Catapults, Cannons, Artilleries etc.) cannot kill the enemies but only damage them. The same with air bombardments and bombardments of naval units. Furthermore one can capture enemy's catapults etc. and as result these units are useless. Diplomacy has been enchanced by some new features but the artificial intelligence which should support it is really poor. Also the new features in many cases are inadequate. For instance there can be no negotiations in order to cancel or modify an aggreement. War or 20 rounds is the only ways to cancel an agreement. Except of that there are many other "improvements" with the result that the player has fewer options than in Civ1/2. Examples of that are the technology tree, the way a wonder can be build, absence of spies and caravans etc. Because of such "improvements" all the games are looking similar despite the randomly created maps and rival civilizations (as in previous releases). If you can acquire Civ1, Civ2 or SMAc don't waste your money with Civ3.
Rating: Summary: Shabby...Bad Buy Review: Sorry for the name but it's true. Okay, first of all it's a really bad buy. ... It seems to be a great game at first, because you can be so many people. But after a while you start to realize that it's hard to pick which one to be. I've played it over and over and I've won a lot, but the thing that got me really mad was the name of the hardest level-Deity. Okay, so they're not really mentioning their views on religion, but seriously, what if someone wins on Deity? What do they call themselves? God? Also, their choice of "quotes" weren't good. Unless you're too dumb to look it up. And, do you seriously think that the Zulus should be in there and not Israel? Sadly, It's not really my opinion that matters. It's up to you, but I wouldn't recommend it.
