Summary: I have no life now...
Review: This game is so terribly addicting.

It's a far cry from the former Civilizations. Combat is much more challenging in this new version, and the new Culture feature is making this a lot of fun. My only critique is that the "official" timeline of the game stops after 2020, but I guess it has to stop sometime :).

Thank you Sid, you've given me a fun time.

Summary: no improvements for the money!
Review: ok first off, this game is WAY too expensive. the only redeeming quality to civ3 is that the graphics are much better than Civ2. maybe a few new units? (i didnt play long enough to find out). alright if you have never played a Civ game before and are thinking about buying civ3 as your first, DONT. buy Civ2 definetly. it is far easier to understand, not as confusing. I own civ2, it is one of the most incredible games for the PC. I couldnt wait to play civ3,but when i did, I was not impressed at all. its the exact same game for...extra...bucks and the layout is much more confusing. now, if you have played civ2 or own it, PLAY CIV3 BEFORE YOU BUY IT!!! i cannot stress this enough. my conclusion, for first time civ players, buy civ2. if you own civ2 already, play civ3 b4 you buy it. i hope this was helpful for ya :)

Summary: I try and try
Review: This is one of those few games that I purchased, played a few times and just put away for good. It's way too slow (I have a dual Athlon 1.8 gig processor box, what do you need a Cray?). You always have the feeling that the "AI" is nothing but a random number generator (I don't how many times I've seen a guy with an ax kill a more experienced guy with a machine gun).

Plus they keep releasing patches and I keep finding bugs. I personally am giving up on the Civ3 series (and as an aside to other comments, I didn't like Empire Earth either).

Summary: I've Had Better
Review: If you don't already own it, I'd recommend that you get Alpha Centauri instead of this game. I like this game, but Alpha was definitly better. Basically, this game is Alpha Centauri with different names and pictures. Of course, since its AC its a good game, but the difference is that Alpha Centauri is ten dollars and can be bought at any store, whereas this is 50 dollars, for the same game. Also, Alpha Centauri is much less of a hard drive hog than this game. Alpha Centauri also had a primative multiplayer, whereas this game offers NO MULTIPLAYER, and just the tenuous possibility of an expansion pack (for another 40 dollars, of course.)

As a side note, both games have a heavy learning curve. I'd recommend that you get a friend who knows how to play to consult, if you can find one, when you try to learn this game or AC (the games have pretty much identical gameplay.)

So, basically, this is a great game, but you can get a BETTER game for less by buying Alpha Centauri.

Summary: Still too many programming bugs
Review: I love the Civilization games. I have spent far too much of my life playing Civ2 and so I really looked forward to Civ3. I got it, installed it, and was disappointed. It's slow (even on my Pentium3 600MHz system). It also crashes way too often. The crash seems to be in the way the players are positioned, since backing up and re-starting from there does not avoid the crash. ...

Summary: I liked Civ II much better, but . . .
Review: Sid Meyers' games seem to go through three phases, a very good game platform (e.g., Civilization I), a second and much improved version (Civ II), and then a third "over-improved" game. I played Civ II to death and found the added bells and whistles of the various Civ II improvements disappointing (either they were buggy or added little to the game). My biggest disappointment was finding that Civ III, instead of building on Civ II's awesome strengths and improving its few weak spots, seemed to be an attempt to make it look like "Age of Empires." The complicating factors and changes from Civ II were a detriment, not an advantage.

However, if you have never played Civ II or are willing to invest more time than I was in learning the game, this is probably an excellent game for you. Civ II was probably the best strategy game of the 1990s and Civ III, for someone who missed that experience, may be the best choice currently.

This is not a real-time game (where action takes place whenever the game is active), but allows you to carefully select your strategy. If you prefer a real-time game, look at the "Age of Empires" series.

Summary: A Real Challenge for Strategy/Civ lovers
Review: First off let it be said that I was an avid Civ II player who had learned to win on the toughest levels with ease. The first time I played Civ III on the easy level, it kicked my [butt]. THIS GAME IS CHALLENGING AND CAN BE FRUSTRATING so if you don't have patients...then it is not for you. One of the big differences between this version and it's two predecessors is that your civilization has specific qualities such as Scientifc and Militaristic, or Industrial and Religious, or Scientific and Expansionist, etc. meaning that each civ with develop in different ways and needs to be treated diplomatically in different manners. Each Civ also has it's own specialized military unit with unique advantages over others, example- Roman Legion, Greek Hoplites, German Panzers,..
There also is the new concept of cultural influence which allows you to take over cities without firing a shot or using a spy. If your culture becomes so respected by the other civs you can also acheive victory this way. Each city improvement is wieghted differently to add points per turn to your cultural turn. Seems a simple concept but can create unseen problems during during wartimes when you conquer a city only to see it deposed a couple turns later back to the other civ due to cultural influence. As I said this came is much more complex than the first two. If you have never played civ you may want to start out with one of the earlier versions. If you have mastered one of the earlier versions be prepared for a real challenge. No more producing a ton of howitzers and pounding your opponents. No more buying cities with spys. No more hurrying production of Wonders of The World (also a wonder can only be worked on in ONE of your cities and if another civ beats you in construction and there's no other Wonder to switch to, you can't put the shields into capital, you just lose them.
...Be prepared for hours upon hours of play even though this game plays faster than the other two. If you are smart and like a good challenge buy this game...

Summary: Civilization 3 used price is higher than in the stores new
Review: For the most part this game is boring as is a couple other simular games.i.e.Pharaoh/etc. I guess I like creating things that I have control over and therefore Roller Coaster Tycoon has been something I have throughly enjoyed. For interaction I think Black and White is great/creative.

Summary: Could have been better
Review: The hype was probably too much to live up to. It's got some great improvements over the past versions. But, it still has some real quirks. Like, why end the game at 2050? How could cavemen with spears take out tanks. Why does virtually every bombing run miss its target. How come you can pound a city for 10 or more turns incessantly and it still doesn't lose all its defenders? And why can't some items be airlifted? Frankly it's still too slow and why does it keep making so many of certain types of units over and over (like those stupid ironboats...)...and oh that deal where you're trying to attack a city and the map shifts you over to some other continent over and over......yikes. And some of those things we "build." How do you "build" universal sufferage? That is a stupid function which I could probably get in and change the code for in about 15 minutes.

On the plus, the music's good and so are the graphics. But the cities look stupid. All in all I still waste too much time on it.

Summary: this game is sick........
Review: This game is poor. i have civilation call the power, the game play isvery slow, this mode of game is very sick, because you can play allday and don't win or lost, you can play more days forwin?

when the PC attack you, you can think with suficenttime what do.

Games of strategy have to be in real time, in realtime you need have strategy to win, do you need stay prepared for allmovement of yours enemies.

do you want thisgame?
think this before buy.
