Rating: Summary: This is my favorite game of all time! Review: This is the most awesome game on earth! I can't wait to get that expansion pack for it, "play the world"!
Rating: Summary: Civ pee Review: To start off, I loved civ2 and civ1. They were both great games, and i looked forward to purchasing the next in the venerable series. Unfortunately, it turned out that the world must have gotten a bad streak. The AI is worthless and ..[makes] too much [noise], the unit stats are way out of proportion to what they actually were capable of in the field, and if I see my rifleman get taken out by a regular spearman one more time, I think I will scream. This game was barely tolerable only b/c I was able to set the units back to the way they should have been. Then the fact that they did not include multiplayer in this game to start with is one of the most insidious marketing schemes ever put into action. Overall, this game could be described as a half-baked, [inexpensive], and nearly without any replay value, despite its open ended engine. (mostly due to the unimaginitaveness of the AI)
Rating: Summary: I can't stop playing this game Review: This is hands down the most addictive game I have ever played. Even after I won for the first time, I had to play again to see if I could win in a different way.I can't comment on the difference between this and previous versions, but I have noticed a lot of people commenting on comparisons between this and the SimCity series. I can say as a former SimCity-phile...I love both. SimCity is great for what it is, but Civ satisfies a different side of gaming, the conquest bug gets at you after a while. Imagine if SimCity let you build a military and go conquer your neighbors...that's what Civ does in a way. Very therapeutic!
Rating: Summary: Addicting as ever... Review: This game is just as addicting as it's predicessors and I would highly recommend it to other turn-based players. It's good lots of new twists and turns that make gameplay a lot easier and 'new' when moving from an old Civ or Alpha Centuri game. Still, I wish they had included the Multi-player function as part of the main release instead of as a add-on pack. Nothing more frustrating than not being able to play on the home LAN. *sighs*
Rating: Summary: Shall We play a game? Review: Civilization 3 is a masterpiece of Stratigic gaming. I've played Civ1 and Civ2 they are both great but the interface is much better in Civ3. The graphics are also way better. The A.I. in the game is great they try thier best to defeat you. I think that Sid Meier really hit the nail on the head with this and I can't wait for the expansion pack to come out.
Rating: Summary: Good artistic work, bad strategic options Review: Graphics are excellent, sound is very good (but sometimes is reiterative), some decent music and diplomatic options are complete. What's bad, then? Strategy: it's so simple it doesn't seem a "Sid Meier's", and you cannot compare it with SMAC (Alpha Centauri) for example. Bad trade system, no more "probe teams" (spies) and some more things that are under zero, make CIV3 an option for beginners.
Rating: Summary: It is a freak. Review: The game simply uses the name of its predecessors Civ1/2. The creators do not demonstrate any creativity and most of the new ideas are either to the wrong direction or the creators have not worked properly on them but they added them simply because they had to add something new. As examples I can use the absense of Zones Of Control and the new diplomatic options, but i)they are not supported by the necessary AI so computer Civs many times take controversial decisions, ii)You have not elementary options like betraying your ally (i.e. in a mutual protection pact war is declared automatically. You cannot at least renounce this pact without war!!) and every diplomatic option should have its opposite match (i.e. offer in negotiations that you will renounce a mutual right of passage with a 3rd civ not participating in negotiations). No try to improve AI. On the contrary they decided to solve the problem of bad AI by reducing the options of the player (technological tree, the way a wonder can be built). Finally the creators did not take any ideas from the similar SMAC and reality has really destroyed the game. For instance bombers and artilleries are almost useless and definetely very expensive comparing to what they do. Similarly with ship bombardments.
Rating: Summary: a great fun game Review: Although some might say this is simply Civ II with new doodads and better graphics, i beleive a fun sequel doesn't necessarily need to be an extraordinarily original game brimming with new concepts. I have found Civ III to be just as engrossing as its forrunner, and in many cases easier to use thanks to a more streamlined interface. I've spent plenty of nights up till the wee hours of the morning promising i'd play just one more turn and ending up finally passing out an hour or two before dawn. One of the great things about the Civilization games is that you can take any direction you want; you're essentially re-writing history in your own way and the possibilities are endless. I highly recommend Civ III to anyone with the least interest in strategy games, and look forward to the expansion pack.
Rating: Summary: An excellent sequel of great series Review: Simply put, Civilization series is the best there is in turn-based strategy games, and has been since the very first one. If you've never played a Civilization game, you were probably born yesterday, and you need to catch up on the fun we've been having without you. :-) If you *have* played I and II (and Alpha Centaury): don't expect a religious experience, but it is a reasonable improvement, and is definitely worth your time and money. The graphics are great, and most of the changes are for the better. Culture adds a new dimension without complicating the gameplay, trading is simplified (no annoying micromanaging of caravans anymore), diplomacy is much more sophisticated, AI is smarter, and hero units are fun. As most people here, I did not like the high impact of corruption and the longer games, but customizing is easy. You can lower corruption and speed up the game with just a few clicks. I am not a big fan of tweaking with the defaults (even though for some it's half the fun), but easy customization is one of the biggest improvements, and AI seems to adjust wonderfully to whatever you do.
Rating: Summary: I reccomend this game, but its not flawless AT ALL Review: ...Civilization III is an excellent game! If you only like games such as Half-Life and Doom, this isnt the game for you. Even AOE addicts may find the turnbased system a bit slow. Civ III is not a hard game. If you dont win at first, dont be put off. With practice and strategies from fansites such as apolyton.net/civ3 it should be a cinch on easier levels. Features- -turn based strategy -highly regarded developer -recreate history -random elements for infinite replayability -fun combat system -RULE AN EMPIRE Civ III is a great improvement over the classic Civ II. Sid Meier, though he didnt have as much to do with the development as people think, shows his gaming genius once again. Improvements include: -Brand new culture system! -Much better resource system -Improved diplomacy and trade -Better graphics such as unit animations -MUCH, MUCH better AI that will give you a challenge on the harder levels without 'cheating' -New units, city improvements and wonders -Various features including seperate settler/worker units -other cool stuff No, I dont work for Infogrames/Firaxis marketing. Civ III has some thing that definitely need working on: -no scenarios! -bad scenario editor, even if an okay one is found in a patch -no multiplayer... -too hard for complete newbies, too easy and missing crucial elements for some hardcore civ fanatics -patches (found at civ3.com) were a help, but the release was too buggy and should have been delayed a little -annoying corruption and culture flips -sid meier did much less on the game than we think even though his name is on the box -big manual had lotsa info, but little strategy Overall, i reccomend this if you liked turnbased games like Civ II, or if you are a casual gamer who loves strategy games. definitely not if you only like fast-paced fragfests
