Rating: Summary: Its a good game, I suggest you buy it Review: Even though micromanaging your villages can be a chore and the creatures serve very little purpose at all, there are lots of unique things about this game. For instance... There are no icons in it. Meaning you dont click a button when you want to walk, pick up things, or cast a spell. You move with grabing the ground with your hand. You cast miracles with gestures you make with your mouse. Its pretty cool. And alot of fun. I would of given it a 5 star rating but making your villages perfectly happy and paying attention to your creature is a real pain. If you do decide to get this game.. Which I hope you do... Dont bother trying to make all your villages flags go down.. Because you wont be able to. pay attention to your creature instead.
Rating: Summary: I thought it would be more fun. Review: I'm nine but i know my games and this one was a three star. The Movement is just plain irritating.I mean grab the landscape......Its just plain maddening!I wouldn't reccomend you buy it but it's up to you. Jonathan Davis age 9
Rating: Summary: Over-hyped- NOT fun Review: This game is NOT fun. The interface is awkward. It is too tedious to move the creature around. I am surprised that all the game sites gave this game a (very) good review. There are a few fun aspects of the game-like when you throw rocks into people's houses and stuff, but overall, the game is very boring. I probably won't play it again.
Rating: Summary: Insomnia is a must for those who play B&W.... Review: I looked at other reveiws where gamers said "Ouch my wrist hurts" and "Such bad cameras and movement". I mastered the keyboard w/mouse option scrolling in 6 minutes (3 minutes were spent getting a soda). Ctrl+up,left, right, down arrow spins/zooms. Shft+up,left, right, down arrow pitchs the screen. Where in the name of heck is the trouble in this? They are right slightly though, because my wrist did hurt after 63 straight hours of gameplay. I taught my monkey to poop near trees, to feed himself, get drinks, be nice and playful. If I could only teach my son this easily (without the backhands of course). Occasionally I would "lag" while playing which can get semi-frustrating if your in the middle of rubbing your creature and accidently smack him around. At the peak of my frustration I would snatch a rock into my godly hand and fling it into a cluster of houses, problem solved as I watch real-time damage being caused. Although Im very sadly disappointed I can't connect and play on the internet for some reason. That WILL be fixed and im sure I would play this game untill the CD's front art is faded. Get it, take your vaction week off work, ship the kids off to camp, and have a blast.
Rating: Summary: I love this game! Review: This is one ... of a game.I have only started playing it for several hours but I love it! Basically, you are a God and as you get more worshippers, you get more power and thus your influence also grows. You control everything from moving to picking things up via a disembodied hand on the screen. What I love about this game is that anything goes. You can opt either to help your people or make their lives a living ... Someone's brother needs to saved, you can save him or you could just ... him or his sister! Bored? Toss some giant rocks at your people. Or grab one of them and toss him! Eventually, you get your own totem creature who will be your avatar and will perform deeds on your behalf. I have not gone to far into the game but so far it looks great. Stabilty wise, no slowdowns or crashes yet in almost ten hours of play so it looks okay to me.
Rating: Summary: Good, but not good enough. Review: The game looks pretty good. Most people are much more impressed with the graphics than I am, but I don't think they were that hot. This game could have been awesome, but a few things ruined it for me. -Inability to skip the splash screens. -Irritating tutorial. -Virtually no options. -Complex controls. -Too many game types in one. Not being able to skip splash screens isn't a major flaw, but all I want to do is play the game. Not stare at the B&W logo for three minutes. There was no way that I found to skip it. I also couldn't find an easy way to skip the tutorial. Grated, the game needs one, but it didn't have to be as rigid and annoying as it was. The graphics options are. well...missing. You can't adjust the resolution or the color depth or anything. There's just a vague "Quality" option, that adjusts god knows that. Since the game doesn't run very well on most computers, being able to tweak it would be a great advantage. The controls are an example of what not to do in a game like this. They suck. Ground Control got it right. Homeworld was almost as good. Neither of them was as muddled or difficult to use as the ones in B&W. If you're a god, you shouldn't have to drag yourself along the ground, and having to adjust your tilt and rotation by clicking on the sides of the screen is ridiculous. Stick to Quake-like controls. They're proven, and they work. The last thing you should have to think about in a game as complex as B&W is how to move. If this game had stuck to being just a God simulation/SimCity/Civilization type of thing, most of my other complaints would disappear. But as it is, they added a plot, and combat, which makes it just too hard to play. It is really difficult to move around efficiently enough to accomplish combat objectives. My last gripe with it is that it doesn't have any good cheat codes. I never advocate cheating and then claiming you're good at a game - but often some cheats can pull an otherwise no-fun game out of the pits and make it entertaining. No such luck here. I think the game suffers more from arrogance on the part of the programmers than actual glitches. This game isn't bad; it's just not what I expected. Make your own decision.
Rating: Summary: Disapointment.. Review: After waiting for about two years, I must admit the game is indeed revolutionary. The technology used in this game -- where villagers learn things, your creature learns things -- are indeed amazing. However, after playing for two hours I quickly realized what this game was - an enhanced Tamogachi. You ... your pet around, or pet it so that it 'learns' from its actions. Peter Molyneux once said something to the effect that he thought it would be so easy to add a 'button' into the game, but didn't do it because he wanted it to be all mouse driven. However, adding a button at this point, would let my hand feel a LOT better. The camera angles get to be rather awkward, and irritating. Another bad part about this game is that the 'quests' are difficult with the controls given. For example, when you have to find sheep around the land, it takes a LOT of searching and running around. And since the sheep are so small on the landscape, they can easily be missed. I had to retry that quest 3 times until I got all the sheep. All in all, this game is indeed great -- technologically. However, the game controls are awkward and the fun factor is not its highpoint. However, if you want a visually stunning game, that has some really great technology in it, buy this game. Otherwise, you will find yourself getting a headache from trying to control the stupid camera, and having to ... your creature because it refuses to 'listen' to you.
Rating: Summary: Black and White Review: I thought this game would be real cool because of all the hype. When I bought it and race home to installed it I had no problems . The problem was playing this piece of junk. The game has it fun points like that fact you can smack around your creature. I did this alot because the [stupid] thing doesn't do what it is suppose to. It is very hard to move around and it was driving me crazy, everytime you race to get someone the screen gets in the way. I do not recommend this game, good idea bad planning.
Rating: Summary: Civ repackaged Review: After playing this a little while, I realized that it's basically Civilization with a new face. Instead of managing cities, you manage a village; instead of settler units, you have villagers, instead of keeping the people happy you keep them faithful, etc., but basically it's the same game of juggling resources, etc. The graphics are pretty good. You have to give them credit for trying to reinvent the game interface, but the interface they come up with probably isn't worth the trouble. Also early in the game they force you to go through a lot of annoying cut scenes and "tutorial" bits, and as far as I can tell you can't turn that off. This gets annoying if you want to start the game again. Also, a lot of the characters have affected British (or possibly pseudo-British) accents that got really annoying after a while. This "you play god" premise is something of an exaggeration. In fact, when you play this game you jump through a lot of hoops and your actions are put in a highly structured context. You're certainly not omnipotent in the game -- there are lots of things you simply can't do. It would be more accurate to say that you're a wizard or giant or something like that.
Rating: Summary: It might take a little, but it's worth it Review: Black & White is one of the best games made, both from an innovative gameplay aspect and from and artistic sense. However, it does take some time and patience to learn it. Many say that the game requires a lot of micromanagement, which can be true, but you can also set up your villages and creature properly to make everyone self-sufficent. While your creature is on the learning leash, you teach him the miracles you want him to perform, where and when you want him to perform him. The creatures are extremely smart, and I am glad that Molyneux has seen the benefit that AI can bring to a game. Your creature can do every simple thing you can do, but in addition you can teach him to do complex tasks, such as moving trees from around the map into a small location to create a forest, and you can teach him to keep the forest watered so your town will have plenty of wood. You can also teach him to water the fields, or supply the town directly with wood or food through him gathering it. The game can be played in so many ways -- it is up to you, the god, to shape the world in the way you see fit, for good or evil or anything in between. It takes some patience and actually reading the manual to learn how to get the game to run itself in the precise way you want things to be done.
