Rating: Summary: NOT FOR THE KIDS... Review: This game is great, as long as you have the guts to play it. The game is full of juicy ultra-violence, and it's definitely not for everybody. The game uses a modified (heavily) Quake II engine. It utilizes GHOUL technology, which allows for 26 (wow) target-specific zones on each enemy model. Each has its own programmed pain and death movements, making for frighteningly real gameplay. The weapons are great, ranging from realistic bullet slingers, to space age microwave pulse guns that fry the enemy from the inside. You may need to tweak the graphics options a little to fit your machine, but I found the game performs excellent on just about any system. The game does not feature software rendering so IF YOUR CARD DOES NOT SUPPORT 3D ACCELERATION THIS GAME WILL NOT WORK. It also does not offer any custom installation options, so you're forced to drop 800 megs of hard drive space. Sound is impressive and realistic, and the team did a very good job with the spatial effects. Gameplay is smooth and great transitions are made using impressive cut scenes. As for replay value, the game can be blown through in a few hours of heavy play, but the sheer fun of the game keeps you coming back for more. Definitely a great purchase, just keep it away from the kids.
Rating: Summary: The best thing since Goldeneye Review: It is unfortunate that a lot of the hype surrounding this game is all about the level of violence. Behind that shock value is a solid and highly entertaining game. You are put into the shoes, or combat boots, of a mercenary and sent to various regions around the globe to track down 4 stolen nuclear warheads. The game mechanics are, in the usual Raven style, very well thought out and implemented. Before each mission you are given a chance to load up on weapons and supplies. This isn't typical first-person shooter fare where you can haul around an entire arsenal, you must choose a few weapons and supplies based on a limited number of slots. In mission you are allowed to drop weapons to pick up different ones, a very nice touch indeed. The graphics look exceptional for being built on an aging engine. The environments are very well done and are varied enough between mission to break any monotony. The levels are designed to keep you on track with the action. Probably the most impressive part is the character animation and hit detection. The models move extremely smoothly and react to location based damage. Shoot someone in the shoulder and they are thrown back in that direction. Shoot someone in the leg and they hop around, point blank in the face...well. Although it is very extreme, it adds a lot to the war is hell gritty feeling. Raven has even gone as far as to include various violence lockdowns with passwords; or you can just opt to not install any of the violent features. Multiplayer includes the standard deathmatch in addition to a couple of excellent alternatives. There is a realistic deathmatch where one-shot kills are prolific and fatigue play a factor. There is also arsenal and assasin. All in all, this is a great game. While it blends some realism in, it is still an action game in its heart. The story is interesting, design well thought out and the graphics are sweet. You won't regret picking this one up.
Rating: Summary: Disappointing! Review: I played this game after playing Max Payne, and Soldier of Fortune was nowhere near in action and storyline. Half-Life and Unreal 1 are much better than this game as well. Cons: * You only have a few saves available, and they get reduced as you increase the challenge level. It [stinks] to have to go back to the very beginning of the level and do it all over. * You just move forward killing everybody who jumps in front of you. I'm personally tired of that idea in games. There is no looking for buttons and clues, turning things on and off, and that sort of things. * You have many weapons, but you rally need two of them to get the job done. Pros: * Each mission takes place in a different part of the world, and that is very cool because the environment varies greatly. I do not recommend you buying this game, but if you want to buy it, then buy it for a low price.
Rating: Summary: As Real as they have made them Review: This game offers an adult action gamer everything they could ask for. A very diverse selection of weapons and a solid action packed story. You play Mullins a mercenary for hire whom has to recover some stolen nuclear warheads. Your travels bring you to all corners of the globe to battle terrorists. The best part of the game are the superb graphics and AI especially on higher difficulty levels. The Gouhl redering system also alows hit specific damage (ie. shoot them in the head they are dead, in the hand they drop the gun in the leg they hop around holding it in pain.) Each mission is introduced fully by a excellent animated cutscene and the player truly feels immersed in the game from start to finish. If you love action games and shooters you should consider Soldier of Fortune, in fact it should be #1 on your game list.
Rating: Summary: Its amazing ! At least when you start to play it . . . . Review: Ok, I know your wondering why the 2 stars. Let me explain. Just to get it out of the way, yes the graphics are astounding, and the body-sensitive damage on the enemys makes for a pretty fun way to kill a person (especially when you cap someone in the "nether regions"), plus, the weapons are pretty cool. Now, to the less than stellar aspects of the game: AI (artificial intelligence): Its [bad]. I guess I was spoiled with Half Life, but when I rush into a room full of baddies, let some shots fly, then run around a corner, I expect at least one or two try to come after me. Never happened in this game ( OK, maybe ONCE). Like fools, they just kept shooting at the wall...over and over and over and over....I think you get my point. Storyline: It can hold its own, although it didn't draw me in at all. There are no real puzzles in the game, and the ones they do have stink. There was actually a cut scene where I was told I had to "Find the helipad switch!", where I then walked into the NEXT room and *lo and behold!* it was right there! They could have done a better job than that. Level Layout: Absolutely, completely, unequivocally linear. Very, very few options to make any choice in the path you choose to get through the levels. Its usually a straight "path" to the end of the level, which takes away from the experience of the game. Every door other than the one you need to take to get to the end of the level is *Locked*. Not too cool. I know it sounds like I'm a party pooper over here, but these are the things that can really make or break a game, and they need to be stated. It is fun to shoot enemies in different parts of their bodies and see area-sensitive damage, but that novelty runs out, and you wind up just rushing through the game pretty quick. Better map layout and storyline could have really boosted this game from "mediocre" to "fantastic"...unfortunately, it just turnes out to be another average FPS. Buy it if you want, but don't expect to be blown away.
Rating: Summary: Good for Gore Review: Good: - More realistic damage model; - Addtional player's actions (such as "look around the corner"); - GORE! - Some interesting dymanic missions, untilizing the above elements. Bad: - Not that existing overall; - Most soundtracks are annoying at best. - Some missions (especially in the later half of the game) are not well-ballanced, relying on shear firepower and number of enemies. - The "spawn" system is by far not the best way to achieve the goal of making player carefull it his destructive actions. It can be really frustrating when suddenly enemy appears in a place where you know no one could possible be. Good: - More realistic damage model; - Addtional player's actions (such as "look around the corner"); - GORE! - Some interesting dymanic missions, untilizing the above elements. Still more good than bad. If you have not played any "new generation" shooters yet - do buy this one.
Rating: Summary: A good Romp Review: Holy cow!! Intestines, intestines! Yes, this is a very very violent game. In fact, a lot of folks have dismissed this game as nothingness encapsulated in a lot of blood and gore. However, they're the ones missing all the fun. Basically, this is a first person shooter with cool weapons, body-pin-pointed damage, and lots of levels. The multiplay is sheer joy, especially in the office levels that have lots of cubicles, corridors, and computers to destroy. Nothing beats the pleasure of sniping at different parts of an enemy's body. Or how about the "lean" feature which lets you peer around a corner and tag an enemy. Good stuff. Buy it, but not if you are of the faint of heart!
Rating: Summary: rocket science Review: In all my years of computer illiteracy, this junker takes the cake! I really can't tell you how good the game play is because I couldn't even get it to run.It simply turned the screen grey and locked up the machine!I also attempted the labyrinth that was activision/raven tech "support".The list of possible problems is immense and the planets must be perfectly aligned to even attempt it.zero stars is being kind to this rocket science clunker.Incidentally, the manual ... too!
Rating: Summary: This game is truly frightening! Review: well, having just bought a new compaq presario 800MHz to replace my Dell Dimension 233Mhz i decided to take advantage of my opportunity for playing a high-preformance game (i.e. something with good 3D quality) So i chose SoF from the shelf at the local computer games store because they were sold out of half-life and i needed a game desperately! My first reaction is yes this was a good buy.. very real- smooth- great graphics etc.. however on the first level especially this game is quite disturbing. the first level is a dark subway- which i would imagine to have some awful smells- occupied by crazy terrorists who are shooting and whipping hostages as you walk through the level. the gore factor is crazy, especially at close quarters with the shotgun. Now I am a pretty typical gamer- R6, Rogue, Swat3 etc... but the gore did take some getting used to... i am on about the 5th level i think, taking place in Iran and by now i am less affected by the death sequences and more worried about how to beat the level, so by now the game is pretty much perfect. one downside to the game that i must adress is the Quake-Doom aspect to it (wreckless shooting, only after being hit by a couple thousand rounds u die) the game would be more frightening if you really had to worry about bad guys and getting shot and more was at risk etc... Over all a great game-great graphics- gameplay- guns- explosions- oh yea and realistic death sequences
Rating: Summary: Excellent piece of gaming! Review: The best Quake-like game I ever saw.The sniper rifle I find especially handy. This was defenitly the best shooter I ever played,it's great!
