Summary: THE BEST First Person Shooter (FPS) - PERIOD!!!
Review: HISTORY:

Since ID games invented this genre with Wolfenstein 3D and Doom, there have been many entries into this market that have proven to be unworthy contenders. While most games had impressive graphics (for their time), they lack in playablity.

For the longest time, one of games that stood out as achieving a balance between innovation and playability was Duke Nukem 3D. What made this game a multi-player frag feast was that besides having a unique style and great attitude, it had cool weapon set and almost perfect balance. This is almost the central component of a good first person shooter (FPS). What this led to in Duke Nukem was almost infinite frag variability and a whole lotta of fun...

Several years after that the action-game market remain without any new titles that captured the multiplayer crown from Duke Nukem, but then finally in the Winter of 1999 along games the new master of the FPS arena...

HAIL TO THE KING BABY!

Unreal Tournament is the new king of this genre. It has a perfect weapon set that is completely balanced. Unlike Quake, where the guy with the rocket launcher has traditionally had the upper hand, UT has some great frag alternatives like the now classic "head shot".

In the end this balance leads to better game play because it fosters equal opportunity fragging with everyone having a fair chance to kill, instead of just the guy with the biggest gun. Because as we know once has the RPG, he keeps the RPG for awhile, and that is inheritly unfair.

In addition the game has well designed, and well thought-out levels especially for deathmatch. UT also offers some great alternative multiplayer games including the awesome Capture the Flag.

So heres to Unreal Tournament, the best FPS, and in my humble opinion THE BEST GAME to come along in a long long time. I suppose it will reign supreme for awhile, until perhaps Duke Nukem Forever makes its long overdue appearance on the store shelfs.<(...)

Summary: A great game! BETTER THAN QUAKE BY FAR!
Review: I have played Quake for some time now. But ever since Unreal Tournament has come out, I have not even wasted precious space on my computer with that. Many people think that Unreal Tournament is a exact replica of Quake. I disagree. I think the developers of UT did a great job making a innovative game with amazing graphics. This game I think has the best graphics of any game (it's still with Half-Life, Max Payne, Red Faction, and Homeworld). UT has many modes of play and once you beat one, another is usually still waiting (not for me because i have completed every level besides one I HATE THAT ALIEN!). UT has so much potiential fun. It has a even better online game. I love playing online with other people. It is so much fun. I do suggest that you do have a broadband because it is nearly impossible to play with 56k modem (nothing will come out of your gun!). All in all, UT is a game for every gamer's collection and a game that true Quake fans should take a good, hard look at.

Summary: I Give it 5 Dwarf Stars because it Rocks!
Review: I Love the game, I have always enjoyed first person shooters but this one really takes the cake! I have beaten the game in a total of 4 hours but the internet game play keeps you hooked on the game.

Summary: GET IT!
Review: I was bored on my PC for quite some time until I purchased Black and White, I must say I was extremely dissapointed with the title so I looked in another department: Action. UT is an excellent game with many elements other titles such as Quake dont have. UT's Gameplay utilizes more elements than just hardcore action, strategy can be used as well for gamers who have that edge. Many things can be adjusted for the players stlye (such as the gravity for strategic purposes) and jumping around in slo-mo mode on 10% gravity is probably half the fun of the game. Excellent graphics also make it a beauty, but there are pretty high system specs, unfortunately. Besides that, Its a solid first-person arena style shooter and strongly reccomend it to anyone who enjoyed Halflife or other titles with similar gameplay, such as Serious Sam or the original Unreal.

Summary: Definitely my favorite shooter
Review: When I was younger, I played Wolfenstein and Doom, beat them, thought they were ok. Got a little older, played demos of the Quake games, thought they weren't worth buying. Then I saw a copy of UT, the Game of the Year edition, for a lil bit in a store. I figured since it was a fairly popular game and was being sold inexpesively, I might as well buy it.
I was completely blown away (by the redeemer ;) ). While Deathmatch is pretty boring to me (the main reason I didn't like other shooters), game types like Capture the Flag, Assault, Domination, etc. that add some strategy to the game really made this game worth the money I spent on it and the many, many hours I spent playing it. The AI was actually challenging (most of the time), which I'm not used to seeing in very many games. Plus, playing against human players online is a hell of a lot of fun. Whether you're a fan of FPS games or not, this game is definitely worth it.

Summary: EXCELLENT
Review: UT is probably the most refined and complete First Person Shooter to have ever come out. It is a complete single player AND multiplayer game. In my opinion, the game pace/action is just right: not too fast and not too slow, whereas Quake III Arena's pace is blitzkreig-lightning-like-fast; too fast for my tastes. Graphics and lighting effects are superb as is sound and sound effects. There are a plethora of weapons and most of them have ALTERNATE methods of firing, which is an added bonus. The weapons themselves are great looking, very detailed and some of them have digital counters which indicate the amount of ammunition in them. There are far more maps than in Quake 3 and far more modes of play, making this a much more complete game than Quake 3. The only flaw of Unreal Tournament that I can think of is that there are a limited amount of skins, and unfortunately, all of them are humanoid/military-like whereas Quake 3 Arena has all types of skins.

If you're a fan of Doom-like games and fast paced blow'em away style First Person Shooters, purchase this title and you'll soon discover that in your repertoire of action games, Unreal Tournament is your "piece de resistance."

Summary: Simply put: One of the best and most flexible games out...
Review: ...there. Unreal Tournament itself has amazingly good gameplay, enough to make you sit behind your computer all day and play. There are multiple gameplay modes, like Deathmath, Team Deathmatch, CTF (Capture the flag), Assault, and Domination. Assault is a mode where the assaulting team has to overcome the defending team and reach an objective (one of my favorite maps for this is Overlord, a WWII Normandy beach landing map). In Domination, the competing teams must take over control points and rule the map. If the game itself is not enough, it also offers an easy-to-use editor called UnrealEd, and there's already tons of mods out there (like the acclaimed Tac Ops, which is included on this edition). You don't need a top-of-the-line computer to play this, either. I used to play on a 800ghz computer and it ran just fine in botmaches and low-ping servers. That's another thing: there's TONS of servers out there calling out for you to play on them. Never will you be unable to find a place to play your favorite maps. Buy UT:GOTY right now, it's a steal at the low price amazon.com is giving it at.

Summary: Buy it ...
Review: I buy a about one game a year to track the state of game technology. I bought Unreal Tournament last month. I had to return it because the CD would not load, Amazon was super fast and helpful. The game is just amazing!! I'm using it on a Dell 733 PIII with GE Force 32meg graphics card and cable modem. The single player mode is great for learning the game. You can take defaults or program the computer bots yourself. The real fun starts when you hit the net. Tons of game servers available ... all free. Just be prepared to get your a$$ kicked something wicked till you master the game. Actually, there are many different games including several team versions. Online, you can observe as a spectator to learn other players strategies and learn the maps. The quality of the maps is just awesome, very rich details and textures, totally 3D gaming. The speed of play is blazing, takes a while to get used to. Lots of extras available on servers to customize your player and customize maps. You can design your own maps. It never ends. Way beyond the Laura Croft, Quake etc games of the past generation.

I'm a 40something IT Exec and this thing keeps me up at night to blow away the kids. Have fun, happy hunting.

Summary: If you voted less than 4 stars on this game you suck.
Review: This game is the best FPS I have ever played in my life. If anyone on this whole site has given it less than four stars, they must have low coordination, and suck at life. I first played it over my friends house and became instantly hooked. Now I live, eat and sleep UT. I wish I didn't have to go to work, so I can stay home and play all day. Friday nights I play from 6 PM-6 AM, Saturday nights I play from 3-pm to 6 AM. Yes, I do play it straight. I wish I didn't have to eat or go to the bathroom because it takes away from time I could be fragging. I just bought the Nostromo n50 because I must be the best. When I am not playing UT, I am waiting impatiently to get back. All I need now is to be hooked up to an IV and a piss bag so I never have to leave the computer. This game is highly addictive, but at least I can say I'm not addicted. Well I have to go I've spent more than 5 minutes away from UT and I am becoming depressed.

Summary: Fantastic Game, Fantastic Value
Review: There's a point in every good game where, for a moment, something sends tingles down your spine, much like a favorite song on the radio. In Epic Games' Unreal Tournament, that sight was setting Mars rising on the horizon as I dueled to the death on an orbiting space platform. Yep, this is awesome.

While waltzing through a local department store, I happened upon this game for only ten bucks. Being more used to games like Descent, I haven't played with too many FPS titles. Quake and Red Faction were the only major ones I had any experience with, but I had heard nothing but good things about Unreal Tournament. And for ten bucks, what the hey?

All I can say is WOW. That ten dollars bought a game that I will play and enjoy for years to come. Simply put, this is one of the highest-quality titles I've seen in a long time. A fun and addictive FPS, UT redefined my expectations for an FPS game and is easily the greatest "bargain bin" title I've ever bought.

Out of the box, you get tons of levels and gameplay modes. There is a single-player tourney, but you can play against the computer-controlled bots as well. On-line, expect to see packed servers even to this day, several years after the game released. UT also comes with an awesome game editor called UnrealEd that is relatively easy to use. Tutorials are everywhere and new levels are released everyday to freshen up the UT experience. Put bluntly, this game never gets old. The graphics aged rather nicely, and the soundtrack is remarkably great.

Even when I compare it to Unreal Tournament 2003, which I later bought on account of the greatness of the original, UT still shines. The awesome weapons, the varied arena settings, and the general "feel" of the game just aren't the same in UT2K3. There is a certain beauty and elegance to this game, despite the lack of insane details as in UT2K3, that keeps me coming back to it.

Critiques? I only have a few. One, the netcode is rather sensitive to lag, such that if you aren't playing on a sub 100ms ping server, you might find that its unplayable (course, that's just my opinion). Two, I wish there were more character models to use. There are about a half-dozen in the game with only two or three "skins" apiece. While it's enough to differentiate between players, there is too much repetition to it (UT2K3 addressed this by having tons of models to choose from). And last, I tend to think that the game's sense of scale is a bit strange. In many levels, including my own attempts, the players seem small compared to the environments around them. This is even more prominent in UT2K3. None of these flaws are major problems, however - more like tiny details and ways to improve what's already near perfect.

For merely ten bucks, you can't go wrong. If you haven't played UT, you owe it to yourself to find and buy it. Check the bargain software section at your local store. This could very well be the finest FPS ever designed.
