Summary: Too Hard to Play Honestly
Review: Challenging? No, Impossible is more like it! Just remember to download the cheat codes first before playing this game, you'll need them. The graphics, sound and user interface are exceptional but those features are over-shadowed by the short amount of time players stay alive in the game. This is not really a serious gaming experience, its more of an exercise in futility. The only time you'll last longer than an alka-seltzer tablet in a glass of water is when you play as the Predator and even then your life span is not that long. The alien can't heal and the marine is the ultimate victim. The game settings should not be "Easy", "Medium" and "Hard"; they should be changed to "Slow Suicide", "Quick Death" and "Don't Bother Fighting Back".

Review: EXTREME CAUTION: this game will run slowly on a computer that has windows xp, most likely because the game is so old in itself. the framerate is very poor, which is confusing, since i have a 1.5ghz pentium4, with 128mb RAM,and and nvidia geforce2 graphics card. did i mention that my computer is a gateway? that might be the problem. i have played this game before, where it ran smoothly. it was a lot of fun,and a little scary at times. i especially liked playing as the alien. another good feature for this game is that it comes with an audio cd. it has 15 tracks, all with in game music. great, huh?

Summary: Several years on and still good fun
Review: I first started playing the original AVP when it was first released around about the same time as half life.
At the time it was bloody hard but fun and its a shame there are not more games released these days that offer the same kind of challange. one of the best parts of game design unlike in mololith's AVP 2 is that the aliens do not appear at the same place each time you play that level, instead they are continuously respawining from random points on the map which gives the whole "they're comming outta the goddam walls" feeling, especially when playing as marine.
although it was difficult opening the bonus levels just took time and skill. I bought AVP Gold after loosing my original AVP Discs. there are not many major changes except the usual stuff you expect to find in an expansion (maps, weapons etc...) but the most significant is the added feature of being able to same the game mid point which, while i think this just allows people to use the quicksave button as a substitues for skill, the community as a whole applauded the feature.
The new weapons are fun my fave being the twin pistols which are supprisingly powerful.
One major gripe for my over the original AVP is that the staff at rebellion decided to replace the voices of the officers on the TV screens with themselves. unfortunatly they just sound stupid and break the atmosphere that the game gave.
Better to pick up the original if you can find it but if not AVP gold is a good second best Note: there are issues running this on windows XP but the problem links back to an old .dll file in the game folder. this can be solved by downloading an updated .dll from one of the many fan sites out there

Summary: Great Game... With One Major Problem
Review: I loved the game. I had downloaded one of the Single player demo's and decided I had to have it, even if it was old. The graphics are intense, and it seems like you are almost IN an Alien movie. The sounds are great, and the In game movie's help with the atmosphere. I particularly liked the Melee game, even though it was almost impossible to survive for longer than a minute or so. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to play the Single player mission games very much yet. The problem I have with the game is it doesn't run right under Windows ME. It doesn't say that anywhere when you buy it, and the tech support is practically useless. With ME, the game freezes your computer RELIABLY/ So if you are running ME, wait til you upgrade to XP or you will have to run another OS on your computer. Or get the sequel, AVP II which runs on ME.

Summary: SWEET GAME!!!!!!!
Review: I played this game for about 6 months strait before i got bored with it. It has sweet movies and the graphics are just perfect if u have a good computer. For all u people with good video cards and fast computers this is the game u want. And like other people have said it takes time to be good....it took me about a month of playing on the internet which is the only way i play it and in that month i became a pro. The Aliens are cool because they can heal by eatting died bodys or eating a head of a dude WHEN HES ALIVE. The marine takes time because u have to find all the weopons and u need to find ammo and health when u need it, but they have the best fire power in the world. I love pred because they have a vision mode for every race so u can see your enemy all the easly. For all u people with time on your hands and love everything about aliens this is it dudes. Some of the bad things is that it takes 400 MB of room and well.....i cant think of anything bad really.Ohh well the controls are easy once u learn to use them..and if u dont like them u can change them to what ever u like. This game gave me 6 months of fun so i would go get it if i were u. :)))

It turned out to be a good game all in all but if you like games like RAINBOW SIX ROGUE SPEAR or SOLDIER OF FORTUNE stick with them From Now On I Will!

Review: I've been a First Person Shooter fan since Wolfenstein, but for some reason didn't pick this one up until now. I'd heard it was insanely difficult and had no save game feature, which was true. However, the Gold version has a save anywhere feature that comes in really handy! The graphics are somewhat dated by today's standards, but the engine they used (Lithtech I think, but I could be wrong; I'm guessing by the look) was very imaginatively utilized, resulting in some really beautiful levels. I mean you feel like you're in the movie. Level one is mostly indoors, but level two gets you outside into a really beautiful bluish-tinted and rainy area. Very moody! I've only had experience playing as the marine, and I'm only on the second level, so you'll have to take that into account when you read this. You start out in a room, and the first thing you notice is someone is talking to you. Turns out it's a commanding officer talking through a video-phone on the wall. This feature is superbly used, as your friend keeps you up to date on your situation as you progress, and you can see him and hear him talking to you at various points. It doesn't sound like much, I know, but after some extended 'alone' time, running into one of these monitors and seeing and hearing your commanding officer again is a huge relief to your lonliness. It's a phychological thing mostly, but it really works. And I'm not sure how they did it, but they flawlessly incorporated these full-motion video scenes into the engine (into small screens on the walls and at computer stations) so it looks perfectly natural. After exploring a bit, I discovered another huge aid: The Image Intensifier. You'll use this a lot in darker areas, and once again, the makers did a fantastic job of making this effect look just like you'd think an image intensifier should look. Also, there's a motion tracker, just like in the movie, which lets you know where the aliens are. Just hearing that beep is enough to raise gooseflesh, without even seeing anything! The first alien I ran into was totally unexpected, and I about fell out of my chair when it came at me. The developers did a fine job of creating the beasts! The surroundings are surreal, and will cause your imagination to run wild. Sound effects are first-rate too, especially the ambient sounds, and they are positional, meaning if they're to the left, you'll hear them from your left speaker. This is possibly the scariest game I have ever played. That honor used to go to the "Thief" games, but those games used more tension-filled fear than true, gut-level nightmare-type fear.
The box gives a Pentium 200 as minimum and recommends a PII 400, but I installed it on my PII 266 (with 96 MB ram and a Voodoo 2 video card) and it ran absolutely smoothly at full detail. I also installed it on a PII 450 with 256 MB ram and a first generation NVidia TNT 1 video card, and it performs flawlessly there too. It is one of the smoothest-performing games I own. Sure, it's a couple years old, but it looks great, and is sure to become one of those classics you'll be looking for later if you don't get it now. Also, I highly recommend playing this with all the lights off, and at night. And not because of the mood (though playing in the dark will certainly enhance the mood). I recommend playing in darkness more because if there's any kind of light glaring on your screen, you won't be able to see well. This is a very dark game, and I've found that at night with all lights off, you can see all you need to. But don't forget to use the Image Intensifier--you'll need it in places. If you can stand the fear, this game is a must-have!

When the first movie came out in 1979 and I went to see it, alone, at a midnight showing, the whole Aliens universe has given me the creeps, and still does. AVP Gold has allowed me get immersed in that universe, walk in those combat boots. The fellow who rang me up at the store when I bought the game said-- "play it with the lights on," and he was right.
Yeah, some folks give AVP Gold a bad rap, but it has one obvious element that is sadly lacking in AVP 2: co-op play. It good to have a little help when you're in levels like Hive, or Trapped. There are numerous downloadable add-on levels that are anywhere from lame to sensational. There is a downloadable cheat utility AVP launcher that gets you all weapons and God-mode so you can sharpen your skills at shooting instead of respawning. I LIKE getting in there invincible and wasting bugs-- great stress release for me. In co-op, or species deathmatch, it's amusing to discover your parter's strengths or weaknesses. My own teenage son is a positive terror as an Alien; he thinks like them, which is s little worrisome . . . Great fun for the $$$, and if you like any of the related movies, you'll enjoy it. Just one thing, though. I wish they had put in some of Pvt. Hudson's lines from movie #2 for taunts! " . . . we got nukes, we got knives, we got sharp sticks . . ." !" " . . . now all we need's a deck of cards." (well, that was Hicks, not Hudson).
