Rating: Summary: Brian Roberds Review: Apparently most of the people who write these reviews either A) Don't play games B) Don't have a brain.Q3Arena was not made to be a single player game... the single player section of Q3 is supposed to be a way to practice. Q3 is the dominating force in Multiplayer games Online and has been since Q1. I have read so many reviews on both this Expansion Pack and Q3 that say "The single player is terrible". Cry Cry, Tear Tear. Let it be known that these games rule. You can play on a Modem or a High bandwidth connection! Don't buy this game if you want to just play with yourself. But until you have tried playing online with 20 or 30 people from around the world in real time... don't waste my time or anyone elses trying to bash these games. I'm Spent
Rating: Summary: Finally a new type of game Review: Finally, quake 3 is more than just shoot them up. It is still a shooter don't get me wrong, but this time it is more than that. You have to go skull harvesting, destroy the enemy base, etc. It is a great addon pack. It will make you even more addicted to the game!
Rating: Summary: Does work with W2K Review: Fun to play and DOES work on NT and W2K. I did actually play it. Folks seem to be confused.
Rating: Summary: No Windows 2000 support.... Review: I am disgusted that Activision makes Quake III Arena compatable with Windows 2000 but does not with the expansion pack. That's pathetic! These guys at ID need to get their act together. I am sure the mission pack will be great but because of the morons at ID I will never know. If your running Windows NT or 2000 go buy a game worth your Money...Soldier of Fortune
Rating: Summary: A Must for Quake Fans Review: I am overjoyed with this expansion. I was sucked into hours of gameplay this weekend right after I installed it, a very good sign. The gameplay is simply fantastic: complex and extremely well balanced. I'll explain how in a moment. Suffice it to say for now that I have really been enjoying this add-on: in my opinion all fans of Q3A, especially those into Capture the Flag, will definitely like it a lot. First, for what's new. When you install the expansion it functions sort of like a huge mod. I had expected more integration with Q3A, but it needs to be played on its own, like a mod. You can't use the new skins or bots in Q3A nor can you use the Q3A bots or skins in the expansion. However, the expansion does update Q3A as well with supposedly superior bot functionality. I haven't explored that yet. Also, included with the expansion are new versions of some of the old Capture the Flag maps, slightly altered with some new areas and spawn locations for the new weapons and powerups. The new game types, which I'll get into in a moment, are not available in Q3A; again you have to play the mod on its own. Now about those new weapons: chaingun, nailgun, proximity mine launcher. The chaingun is somewhat reminiscent of the old chaingun from Doom and Doom 2, but with more kick, a much faster bullet-spewing rate and more spread. It's excellent for spraying the enemy from a medium distance, but at long distances the spread is too great for the gun to be useful. It is devastating close up, and doesn't have the annoyingly long spin up and down times the Q2 chaingun had. The nailgun is nothing like the old Quake nailguns. It is more like a shotgun that shoots nails: it fires a large burst that spreads rather more than the shotgun does. The gun is more powerful than the shotgun, except for the increased spread rate and the much slower speed of the projectiles compared to the shotgun pellets, thus the blasts are semi-dodgeable. It is more useless at long range than the shotgun, but packs much more of a wallop at close range. The proximity mine launcher is pretty self-explanatory. One item of note is that it won't cause self-injury in team play if the friendly fire option is off, and that the mines can be detonated with other explosives (other mines, grenades, rockets). The mines sit there for a period of time before going ka-blammo on their own (that is, if the unsuspecting enemy hasn't blundered over them yet); they don't last indefinitely. They'll stick to walls, ceilings, etc. The powerups are the most interesting additions to the game. They add a whole new dimension for strategy and teamplay, especially in CTF. There's a ammo regenerator, a guard powerup that sets health and armor to 200 with regenerating health, a scout powerup that functions like permanent haste (but you can no longer user armor), and a doubler which does what it sounds like: doubles weapon damage. You can only have one powerup at a time, there's a limited number available on any given map, and they last until you get fragged. Also there's a new item, a self-destruction bomb that will explode with unmatched fury, taking everyone nearby out be they friend or foe, and will set the ground quaking even at the other end of the map. The bomb also goes off after a brief delay if you've been fragged but the enemy left your carcasse intact. The last feature to mention is the inclusion of three gigantic CTF maps. Yes, there are the usual added maps expected with any expansion, but these are something new. They are large enough that newcomers to the game will actually find themselves getting lost, particularly in one set in an icy, arctic location. The new maps support very large teams and need them. I found that about eight on a side is a minimum. You won't get lost for long, and the size of these maps creates whole new possibilities for teamwork and strategy. You can man a bunker, camp in a sniping post, streak in for a crazed, kamikaze-style attack, prowl looking for lost and confused enemies, etc. Really, it only takes a little while to find your way around, one caveat being that you'll need a fairly beefy system with a good, current technology graphics card to really enjoy these maps. With the new add-ons, though, these maps will support untold hours of strategic warfare. Simply put, the more organized and cooperative teams will almost invariably win. In my opinion, this is an improvement on the old CTF maps, in which team anarchy usually prevailed. After hours of initial game-play, I believe the new powerups are extremely well balanced. The old powerups are still around, and you can find devastating combinations (such as guard + quad damage, ammo regen + haste, etc.) I've simply been having a ball toying with varying strategies depending on what powerup I obtain. Individually scoring is enhanced as well: you get more credit for defensive actions. I haven't tried the new game types much, since the huge, terrain CTF maps are so much fun, but they seem interesting. Overload, one flag CTF, and harvester. Overload involves blasting the opposing team's obelisk, which regenerates when left alone. One flag CTF is self-explanatory: one flag in the middle, bring it back. Harvester involves collecting the enemy team's skulls and carrying them back, and/or running over your own team's skulls to make them disappear. The new games are fun, but I'm hooked on the new, large scale CTF. The new maps are all excellent, even the non-terrain ones. I checked them out briefly before returning the terrain maps. In a nutshell, the expansion offers something greater than the sum of its parts. A cynical buyer might think, well so what, some new maps, a couple new weapons, new powerups, some new game types, uh, on second thought that is a lot. Nevertheless it's the combination of these that makes the expansion so compelling, and so rewarding to play for a long time. Free-for-all servers have lagged behind servers with CTF in the past several days since the expansion has been out, which is a little bit disappointing since I'm eager to try the new weapons in FFA. The same is true for servers with the new game types: CTF has been the biggest draw. In any case, team play is what this expansion is all about.
Rating: Summary: The game Quake 3 should have been. Review: I don't care what people think, all this is is an improved Quake 3. This is the game that Quake 3 should have been when it was released a year ago. Instead we were given a half finish, sophomoric menu driven, rehashed game...which was beaten out feature wise by the more polished Unreal Tournament. Now we have to pay AGAIN to get the finished product. I find if funny that the most popular online action game right now it Counterstrike, which is basically just a Half-life mod base on old Quake engine technology, yet it's destroying Quake 3 for players online. I'm glad Quake 3 is dead...because it died a long time ago.

Rating: Summary: team power-ups Review: One of the really cool things is the Team Power-Ups; Ammo regen, Scout, Doubler, and Guard. All of these enhance your player allowing you to play a different role or use a different strategy eg when you use Guard, your player is stronger and you can tie up two or three opponents before getting killed while your teammates capture the flag or whatever game. Or in games with a lot of people. weapons can be hard to come by, so Ammo Regen is preferred. My biggest problem is getting connected. Half the servers don't work, they default into a Quake 3 game or create an error. So I am frequently downloading new servers trying to find a place to play with more than one or two others.
