Summary: HUGE SURPRISE>>>HIDDEN SURPRISES---BAD ONES!!!
Review: After playing the first mission I would have given this game 5 stars for sure! The graphics were incredible, the sound was great, and it's obvious that a lot of research went into this game. However, as I played the subsequent missions I began realizing HUGE FLAWS in the game that were quite obvious and, in my opinion, seemed to me to be blatantly overlooked. First and foremost is the friendly AI which, as a previous reviewer stated, is all but useless. Secondly, the enemy targeting is preposterous; many of the times I've been shot were while crouched behind a boulder while my incompetent number two man remained unscathed in the wide open. This makes it very difficult to accurately target the enemy when your man is constantly the one going down. Third, are the missions involving escorting or being escorted by tanks. In most of these missions, the max of 2 teams of 3 men each are needed to defeat the enemy. Unfortunately, it's nearly impossible to control the movements of two teams in order to keep them behind the cover of the tanks. Also, on the last mission I played, all of the tanks completely ignored an enemy tank only to leave the trailing second infantry team to be annihilated by the untouched and in-plain-view enemy armor. I also find it highly doubtful that an enemy without a night vision device could spot an adversary with night vision first. I've found this game to be 90% trial and error and 10% military tactics. Other than these MAJOR FLAWS (all noticed within a few hours of gameplay), this game is great, however, I don't know if I can bring myself to overlook these flaws, as undeniable as they are. Though incredibly frustrating, it is still somewhat enjoyable.

Summary: A Game to Play
Review: This game is good for playing. If you go to freakycheats dot com you can find all of the cheat codes. the only thing I don't like about this game is that you have to unlock new players before you can get new weapons. this is so even with the cheat codes.

Summary: Some good, some bad
Review: First things first. I loved Rainbow Six and Rogue Spear. I've also played Operation Flashpoint quite a bit. GR is a combination of the three (sort of).

The good: the graphics are astounding. Enough said. Tutorial is good. No bugs on my system.

The bad: realism is questionable. Sure, the firefights seem real enough with tracers flying and damage and weapons are realistic. However, since when do Green Berets go on missions with one rifle and one secondary weapon? Answer: never. They go with 70+ pounds of gear including rifles, backup pistols, several grenades (and several types of grenades), claymore mines, night vision, knives, explosives, radios, etc, etc. They carry anywhere from 300-1000 or more rounds of ammo. In GR, you get one primary weapon (e.g. M16) and one other thing (pistol OR explosive OR binoculars OR grenades, but only one of these). And you can't mix and match items in the kit -- you can only choose from certain combinations (e.g. rifleman use the M16, not M4 or MP5. demo guys use the M4 but not M16, etc.)

Second, the selection of weapons is poor. Since when is an elite commando limited in his selection of weapons? The second single-player mission is a hostage rescue. You've got to rescue two guys from two locations about 200 yards apart. So my first thought was to use a silenced MP5. But it's not available even though they're standard weapons for specops soldiers. Instead, you go with the M16 and when you shoot up one location, the enemy elsewhere on the map won't even react or put up their guard in any way -- even though they would have heard the gunshots.

Third, the friendly AI is pretty limited. One reviewer called it user-friendly. That's true, but it's almost TOO simple, and does not provide the flexibility necessary to simulation special operations warfare. You cannot control formations, stance, or rules of engagement. And even with the limited control available, the soldiers pretty much suck -- no AI tactics, no reaction to the enemy, no nothing -- even though they're supposed to be elite commandos.

All in all, I expected more from Tom Clancy and Red Storm. This is basically Rainbow 6 or Rogue Spear transplanted outside and called a tactical shooter/combat sim. A lot of potential, but I'll stick to R6/RS for hostage rescue and OFP for combat sim.

Summary: Easily the best shooter of 2001!
Review: Ghost Recon (GR) exceeded even my best expectations, and I was really looking foward to this game.

The graphics are absolutely great, far better than those of Rogue Spear or SWAT 3, if anyone tells you differently, they must simply have an old computer and can't see the improvements due to hardware limitations, there is simply no comparison. Which brings me to the only problem with GR, you will need a fairly powerful computer to run the game at full detail.

The sound just blew me away, if you have even a decent sound system you can actually feel the precussion of the shots.

I can't say enough about the new command interface, I own and love all the Rainbow 6 series games, but GRs new interface is so easy to use and works so well I'm going to have a hard time going back to R6. In addition, the way your soldiers gain expierence with each mission makes you really attached to all of them, you hate to loose even one man.

The A.I. is impressive, I have never played a game where your computer controled teammates were as aware and as capable as they are in GR. I have had missions where the computer controled members of my team got the vast majority of the kills, which I have never seen happen in any other game. It's great to know that my team members will back me up in a fire fight, or will catch an enemy soldier sneaking up behind me if I am intent on what's going on infront of me and don't see him.

Several other reviewers of this game complained that the teammate A.I. was rather stupid and their teammates were constantly getting killed. I just have to answer this accusation, they will only get killed that way if you, their commander, don't know proper field tactics and walk them into very bad situations. If you employee sound tactics and move carefully, your teammates will handle themselve wonderfully.

The enemies are just as good as your teammates, they hide, take cover, use cover and advance tactics, and work together to outflank you. They even retreat if caught in an indefencible position.

The game is extremely stable, I have been playing it for two monthes now, and have never had it crash once. I have read several reviews further back complaining of "bugs", but I can honestly say that I haven't experienced a single one. Those people must have just been using old hardware, in which case, I can understand their frustration, just don't blame the game for your problems.

All in all, this game is Red Storms best offering yet, easily topping all the Rainbow 6 and Rogue Spear games. It's thoughtful, fastpaced, ferocious, and incredibly fun.

Summary: The Best Tactical Shooter Ever
Review: The team that defined the tactical shooter genre has really outdone themselves this time, I hardly know where to start...

(If you want to just get to the point and see my final thoughts on Ghost Recon, just scroll down to the "bottom line" section at the bottom of my review.)

Gameplay:
Ghost Recon's planning has been shortened from previous Red Storm games to only an overview of the situation and a team selection process in which the player chooses from catagories like Riflemen, Support, Snipers, and Demolitions.

In lieu of a pre-action detailed ingress and egress planning phase, Ghost Recon employees an in action command window that is down right brilliant in it's simplicity and intuitive use. I have played a lot of team based shooters and I have never used a command window that works this well or this easily.

While some people familiar with the Rogue Spear games have complained about the abbriviated command system, the system used in Ghost Recon is far more appropriate for a military field action shooter than the police action command system employed in the Rainbow 6 series.

A.I.:
The artificial intelligence in this game is the best I have ever seen (and this is coming from a HalfLife vetern). When shot at, enemy soldiers will hit the dirt and dive for cover. They will try to outflank you if they spot you first and will retreat to a new, more defendable position if they are on the losing end of a fire fight.

Graphics:
The graphics engine Red Storm created for Ghost Recon is very impressive, trees and bushes sway in the breeze, the landscapes are breath-taking, and the sun glare, especially when seen through the trees, is abbsolutely the best I have ever seen.

The character animations are nearly perfect as well, you can really see that the design teams put a lot of effort into them. While the graphics are not quite as beautiful as those in many Quake III engine based games, they actually look more real, in my opinion, due in no small part to care taken to make every character movement as natural as possible.

The only real problem with game is that it takes a fairly powerful computer to run the graphics at full detail. I have an AMD Athalon 900 MHz processor, 256 Mb of Ram, and a 64 Mb NVidia GeForce 3 graphics card and the game still slows a bit when I run it using 32-bit textures (but at 16-bit, the graphics are smooth as silk and still look amazing).

Sound:
I was very impressed with the sound, the noise of automatic gunfire is just dead on target, to the point that I can actually tell whether a shot was fired by a team member or a soviet soldier by sound of the weapon. Sound usually doesn't add or subtract much from a game for me (unless it's absolutely atrocious), but hearing the quiet of the outdoors suddenly shattered by automatic weapons fire brought to bear on an unknowing column of soldiers is a huge rush.

The bottom line:

Game play: 5 (out of 5)

This is a nearly perfect tactical shooter that has real tension, fierce action, and amazing realism. If you are trying to decide between Operation Flashpoint and Ghost Recon, please, please, please, buy Ghost Recon, it is far and away the superior game. I own both and there is simply no comparison, Ghost Recon does everything that Op Flash fails to do, and everything that Op Flash does well, Ghost Recon does better.

For a proffessional opinion on both Ghost Recon and Op Flash, I highly recomend the reviews done on both games by PC Gamer Magazine.

Summary: Could be a 5 star game!
Review: If it just worked dang it!

Ghost Recon is a tense FPS type game with high marks for combat tactics and realisim. The key to playing and winning is "see the bad guy first" which is easier said than done. The single player game consists of 15 missions in which you control 6 Recon soldiers. The idea is to accomplish all of your mission goals. If you can pull this off, no mean feat, the game will open "specialist" soldiers that have somewhat better weapons and combat experience (stats) allowing you to "take" them along on your next mission. If you think you know small arms battlefield tactics this game will test you to the max.

Ghost Recon could have broken through to the top of the heap for type but unfortunately it is buggy as heck. I have had to do more work-arounds and adjustments to my computer in getting the game to run than any other game I have ever played (and I play a lot of computer games by-the-way). GR was originally scheduled for release after the first of the year however it hit the shelves about three months early (to cash in on holiday sales probably) and it plays and feels like it - just not quite finished. The developer promises to release a patch around the end of January and that should address most of the "bug" issues.

Do I recommend it? Most certainly, however you might want to hold off till after the patch is released.

Summary: Disappointing
Review: With a stable of Rainbow Six etal and Rogue Spear etal you would have expected Restorm to raise the bar. Looks yea, Playability and realism NO. The friendly AI is generally useless and the specialist are locked up in an all too arcade like manor.

Multiplayer enviroment is great and worth the buy if thats your interest but they have seemed to have forgotten the single player.

Operation Flashpoint does the single player infantry sim much better (Though the vehicle sims stink)

Summary: Love the game!
Review: Being a fan of the Rainbow series, I was expecting "another installment." To my surprise, Ghost Recon is dramatically different, as well as quite simple to play. I really like the in-mission planning as opposed to pre-mission planning. Also the fact that you can not only switch "fireteams," but also individual characters. The graphics are beyond compare (which is a Red Storm trademark), with realistic enemy reactions to getting shot to the swaying trees and uniforms that get soaked when you go through water or rain.. The AI is much better than Rogue Spear, with the enemy try and sneak up on you by dodging behind trees, and hiding if your sniper "misses" them. The gameplay is smooth, and the levels are enormous outdoor locations as opposed to the mostly indoor Rainbow Six and Rogue Spear. Blowing things up with the anti-tank launcher is cool, but I personally prefer the sniper, sneaking around in bushes and taking out the enemy w/o them knowing where you are. I am currently running the game on a PIII 600 mHz, with a 16 MB graphics card, and I have no problems running GR with the highest detail settings. I am also running it on a celeron 1.2 GHz, with a 8 MB graphics card, with the settings to medium with no problems. (Networking this game has been one of the greatest experiences since Unreal Tournament). If you like squad based action games, this one will leave you on the edge of your seat right from the beginning. Fans of the R6 series as well as newbies will thoroughly enjoy Ghost Recon.

Summary: (AMAZED) *scatching my head...
Review: I guess the third time is the charge. After loading the game first on a PIII 500 (512ram, 32GeForce2) and 1.2 T-Bird (512ram DDR 32Geforce2), i final got the game to run on my friends 1.5 P4 (512RDram 32Geforce2). Though i can only play tis game at my freinds house when he is working, i am willing to say it is the coolest game i have played since Half-Life TFC. The graphics are the best i have ever seen in a video game, even tops MAX PAYNE.

If you have a kickin PC and you want to try a good game for it this is one that will push it to the limits. If you dont have a kickin PC either get one or go borrow your friends, it is worth it. :)
