Summary: Not for the easily bored or scared.
Review: I'll admit, this game is somewhat hard and frustrating at times, but beleive me, if you put effort into the game, it will pay off with some good old fashioned gory entertainment. I got the game yesterday and it is true, I did need to get help on the internet when I got stuck. However there are abundant resources for whenever your in a jam. The reason I did not give this game 5 stars is because it had a flaw in it. The sound gets all messed up about 3 levels in and I did some research on it and you have to download a patch to fix it. Regardless, the patch worked fine. Beware though, this is a very very violent game. I would say that it is even more violent than Max Payne. There are some scenes in it that made me want to throw up along with my comrades. The old lady at Target was right to ask me if I was 18.

Summary: A great game
Review: I'm a gamer from india, i bought The Thing a week back and i never got disappointed, like what happened for half life.
Game play is great, u get nevrvous some times and even sometimes scared , graphics is really inspiring!!!.
The negetive part of the game is, u lose your life when u cross your team mate fighting with the thing, the story is not so good and objectives are not very clear.
overall u wont be disappointed with THE THING.

Summary: Violent, visceral, and rated M for Mature
Review: John Carpenter's The Thing, which is a remake of a 1950s film based on a story by H.P. Lovecraft, was nothing like what came before it. This game is very much like it, in the vein of survival horror you must lead a rapidly "evolving" team of special forces operatives and survivors of a terrible conspiracy. The imaginative use of sound effects, voice acting, and gory effects pioneered years ago is amped to the maximum for this unique experience. In addition, you have the ability to manage a team's morale and sanity with the trust-fear component of this game. If you think your Medic is your friend, give him a gun, if he becomes frightened, give him a bigger gun. If he starts to lose it, take away his guns! My only gripe with this game is the lack of Instant Saves; so that you must go through the annoying horror of trying to make it to the next Save Point to save your game. There is a simple mod/hack you can easily download and install, but if you're not comfortable with using mods or don't know what that is, then be forewarned. However, the game is very addictive and well-written. Also, the flamethrower, perhaps by intent and not by error, is dangerous and tends to set your own feet on fire, but then again, it's an incentive to learn to aim before you shoot. Finally, multiplayer was sadly omitted.

Summary: A further review of The Thingee...
Review: Ok, I'm back. I've played the game for over a week now and as I said before, it has some really fun and exciting spots. And yes, it might even scare you at times. And yes, the trust thing is kind of interesting, although I never really like squad-type games where you have to babysit somebody else. One thing that really bugged me with finding an "engineer" to fix some junction box and open a door for you, is that the SOB wouldn't stay put! I'd tell him to stay in one spot and as I went to clear the way of evil critters, I'd find the jerk standing out in an exposed position, where he could get killed! I finally resolved that by crouching and pushing the idiot into a corner or locking him in a room. There are a couple (so far) spots where you have to battle a HUGE alien critter. THOSE spots really got me screaming and cussing. The character moves too slowly, and firing is awkward and it always seems like you have no place for cover! I don't like that. But overall, I really DO like the game. I think the graphics are excellent, and for the most part, I enjoyed the scenery. I still don't like that you can't save on the spot and have to search for the room that holds the save machine. It's always a mile away from the action, so you have to run forever to get to it or to get back to the action! I do agree with the criticism of the whining character when he uses the flamethrower. I mean, c'mon... I fired that and/or the fire grenade a safe distance away and got killed! That really bugged me... And, right after saving the game, I get a loud "BOOM!" sound and my health is down by half - which I certainly don't appreciate, considering the lack of health packs... Right now, I'm stuck in a room with a huge critter hanging from the ceiling and another in a glass case and no way out. I finally figured out that I could push the engineer towards the door to get it to open and then shoot the critter in the glass cage and kill it. Then I just killed the engineer... No need to keep excess baggage... I found out that I could kill the critter hanging from the ceiling by firing constantly by running in circles and then when I see it's weakened, switch to the flame thrower and circle it while I sprayed fire on the ground surrounding it and it would die. But, I got way to the end of the game where I have to kill a humongous critter outside, from a helicopter. Problem is, the computer keeps crashing at this point! I don't know why it does that! I tried to download the two patches, but every time I do, it totally screws up my computer! So, Like Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb and Angel of Darkness, I now have a ANOTHER game I can't finish... I don't like that... Is this game worth the money? Not if you buy it new in the store. I'd recommend buying a used copy to get the value from it. It's not as bad as the detractor's say, but it DOES have some considerable flawes that seem to make it very frustrating at times...

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: I Don't think it's as bad as people say.
Review: Ok. A lot of people say its horrible. They can't look, its boring, whatever. The point is, this game was not made to be the best in gameplay. It was to be the most suspenseful and chilling game yet. If you liked Half-Life for its puzzles, plot, and sense of mystery, You'll probably like this game. As for lokking around, If you simply aim you can lokk well enough, and besides, You can take in enough with a few glances, which may be all you have time for with the possibility of ambush at anytime. I read a review in which someone complained about the fact that the rifle didn't shoot straight. Let me put it this way, The first time I see someone accuratly fire a rifle in one hand at moving targets in a life or death situation with his heart throbbing,I'll pay that guy $20. If you find it boring, There's nothing to be done, Some people like sensless slaughter found in deathmatches while others like games with an actual plot.

Summary: GREAT, FUN, INCREDIBLE, BUT...
Review: Okay, first of all, this game really takes it to the limit. The graphics, sounds, controls (minus the ability to look up and down) work. The Things, NPC's, and enemy soldiers come at you in a non-stop torrent with enough time to look around for some of the movie sets. The gore level is high and so is the adult language (I still cannot understand why a gamer who blows people away at close range and see's men kill them themselves by gunshot to the head would be upset at adult language-I thought the language was really right on). The smaller problems with this game come from programming issues (flame thrower shots down, you can be hurt occasionally by enemy on the other side of walls) but the lagrgest, also a programming issue, comes about when the games crashes (mine crashed right at the end). This can be fixed by downloading some patches ...Excellant game, pace, action! A definate buy!

Summary: So good, it's HORRIFIC!
Review: One of the best movie to game conversions. Good graphics, sound and handling. Tension and fear is included in this game! This game is as well great for people who didn't see the movie.

Summary: Very disappointing
Review: Sierra, let me give you some advice. I should not have to tell one of the biggest gaming houses in the world this. In the year 2002 when I play a game I damn well expect to be able to look up and down. I didn't mind with DOOM cos that was in 93, but not in 2002. This flaw really irritated me so badly I can't be bothered completing the game. You cant look at or examine anything on the floor or above you - its really annoying. Secondly, the weapons are just awful. That assault rifle I've got just seems to fire all over the place. It doesn't even seem to fire in a straight line and I can't aim the damn thing. And the flame thrower, what is that all about? Why why why does it aim at the ground and set the floor on fire in front of you instead of allowing you to fire it across the room from a distance? The only way you can set anything on fire, except for yourself, is by going right up to it. Finally, I found this game totally failed to capture the building suspense of the magnificent film. Every time you meet someone they say something like "hey, I don't trust you, you're one of those things" blah blah blah. They even copied some of the well known phrases word for word from the film which I didn't like, couldn't they have had the imagination to think up something new. It's 20 years since that superb film and this game tries to borrow on its name but doesn't even come close to doing it justice. Don't waste your money. If you do don't say I didn't warn you.

Summary: Very good game
Review: Some people here have complained about not being able to look up or down but you can look up and down without using the shift button by downloading patch 1.2 or 2 from the www.thethinggames.com The way you use your team is very cool. The trust factor is awesome. I found a couple of team members in one level and we helped each other out for awhile but then they ended up being part of the thing later on. The game is a bit easy but the one complaint I really have is that it isn't as freaky as I thought it would be. It isn't as scary as resident evil where you hear the foot steps and doors. There is a sound glitch in mine where it's hard to hear them talk but I don't think it's the games fault. Cool game.

Summary: I'd rather get a root canal than play this game again.
Review: The "3 B's"... Boring, buggy, and bstupid. Clumsy and difficult to control. For instance, there's an awful depiction of space. You can be standing about what looks like 3 feet away from a fire, and your dummy of a character will start yelping, "oww", "ugh" (just burn, you idiot...). Your stupid character can't jump or look down or up. It's like he's a kneeless, neckless monkey with a gun or something. One of the most important weapons in your limited arsenal, the flamethrower, only shoots the floor 3 feet in front of you. You literally have to run at the alien and torch it at close range, but of course you'll just start yelping again cuz you're too close to the fire.

The honest truth is that I didn't even finish the game. I got to the last boss and every time I was suppose to kill him, I would get some error and get thrown out of the game. I called support several times, downloaded two patches, with no avail. But, you know what? I don't even care. I forced myself to get that far in the first place.

It doesn't even have cool cheats...

This is the worst 3rd person shooter I've ever played. A word of advice if you still want to pick it up though. Hold on to the medical packs. The big Things are really really hard to kill so you'll need as many of them as possible.
