Summary: Payne to the Max: Windows 95/98/2000/ME
Review: Don't but this game if you are running Windows XP Professional. I am running it on my machine and whenever I try to install it I am met with a frozen computer and no Max Payne. I thought it was just my CD rom until I tried installing it on another XP Pro machine and got the same problem. Believe me I have played and beaten this game. Its one of my favourites but save your money if you Run XP Pro.

Summary: One of the best...
Review: Max Payne is one of if not the best 3dshooter/action game. The story is what makes it so good. It is unlike anything else. I was tired of 3dshooters and rpgs but this game is great.

Summary: Great Game!
Review: Good Points:
Question: What are the good points about Max Payne? Answer: EVERYTHING!!! When you start the game, the first thing you learn to understand is this: Max Payne does indeed live up to it's hype. I guess we should go through this step by step: Graphics: beautiful, detailed and uh ... beautiful. Great textures, great design, the whole nine. Variety in levels everything. The levels take you through everyday gritty cities and alley ways, through underground subway stations complete with running subway trains, through criminal warehouses and through corporate offices. Each level is filled with little details that make the game that much more realistic. From sheets of paper on office desks to wrinkles in the characters clothes. From bullet holes in the walls to rust on run down metal walls. NOBODY can complain about the graphics in Max Payne. The Sound: you can hide around the corner ready to ambush the enemies and overhear the enemies talking about thier favourite movies. 'nuff said. The gameplay: Bullet time. Bullet time, bullet time, bullet time. Bullet time. Let me tell you how bullet time works. With the push of a button, the game goes into slow motion for a minute and during this time, you can aim for the enemies head, dodge bullets, and pick your nose. It's an origional concept in video games most noticeably compared to the scene in the movie Matrix where everything goes into slow motion and Neo dodges the bullets of the Gatekeepers. That's exactly what it is, and that's exactly what makes Max Payne, Max Payne. Nothing beats putting the game into slow motion, and dodging the enemies gun fire while aim for thier head and pulling the trigger, and watching the enemy fall to the ground in slow motion. Beautiful. Lastly the storyline: the story line is realistic. Although at first it might seems as if it's just your regular wife gets killed love story, upon playing the game you realise that it's much more than that. I don't wanna give away the story, but I will say this, the story breathes realism. Everything in the story is realistic and could happen to anybody.

Bad Points:
The only bad point in this game (and it's not really a bad point since it's done well), is the use of a graphic novel to tell the cinematic scenes between levels. Instead of the usual CG rendered movie scenes used in most game to advance the story, Max Payne tells the story with comic book stories. Although a good idea and pulled off well, my personal opinion (and keep in mind that it's only my 2 cents), I'm a sucka for cinematic scenes and would have prefered CD rendered scenes over a comic book page style of story telling

Summary: Not quite as great as it's made out to be
Review: After reading several glowing appraisals of this game I decided to purchase it and see what all the fuss was about. And having just completed it I have to say it left me with mixed feelings. Max Payne is a third-person shooter which throws up some pretty interesting ideas but at the same time has an almost equal amount of flaws. Gameplay consists of shooting some bad guys, moving on, shooting some more bad guys and so on and so forth. Whilst there is at least some interaction with the environment it's pretty standard fare, pull the lever, press the switch, etc. Graphically the game is quite impressive, and the music has a dark tone to it which compliments the grim urban surroundings. The slow-motion bullet-time feature is implemented seamlessly into the action and gives it an extra dimension. The use of the comic novel to unravel the plot is a fresh approach but I think using movie cut-scenes would have sufficed and in the end I became indifferent to it. I thought that in the two episodes where you have to guide Max through dreams that he experiences were well thought out and I actually found them quite unsettling. The game isn't particularly hard to complete and you can save your progress at any point. Having said all this the game does score high on atmosphere and tension and has a very gritty feel to it. And there's no doubt that entering a room and cutting down half a dozen or so enemies with some dual berettas is a very enjoyable experience. In conclusion then, Max Payne is a very linear, dark and brisk shooter which is just a little to repetetive and short for it's own good.

Summary: The best game
Review: I believe that this is the best game ever created. I like the idea of being able to be able to escape gun fire with the bullet time mode. This option makes this game easier but the game is still hard over all. Max Payne has a really good gun selection and offers a variety of people and levels. This is the best game I have ever played and I can't wait for a sequel if there is one. I am glad I was able to play this game and can't wait for another game of this quality

Summary: Nothing to lose.
Review: In the dead of night during a New York Winter, one man plummets into the the dregs of urban society, himself now a fugitive chased after by the cops and the crimelords. A family murdered and a his best friend dead, Max is a man on the edge, looking for cryptic answers and battling against impossible odds. Excellent graphics and a driven storyline make this game almost as unique as its bullet-time feature. Now, as he ventures deeper into the heart of darkness, there is no turning back. There is nothing left to lose.

Summary: False Hype
Review: Max Payne has impressive graphics and lag rarely interfered with the gameplay; the levels are pretty varied and I guess kind of fun to play; also, the levels interact well with the bullet-time feature.

On the flipside:

The gameplay is SO freakin repetitive--I just got bored: encounter an enemy and gun em down with bullet-time. Yes, I did this some seven thousand times. I mean, what kind of shooter doesn't have buttons to press and levers to pull that provide some variation from the monotonous shooting (from MP I learned that this is not an oximoron)?

And to make matters worse, the gun selection is slim with only sixteen guns, and boring ones at that. Sure every shooter's gotta have the classic baseball bat, shotgun, and desert eagle, but most make up for it with something cool like a gattling gun or chainsaw. But MP only had the same old, same old--uzis, berettas, grenades, a lame rocket launcher.

Also, the hype for the bullet-time feature was way over-blown. For starts, from some of the screenshots I chcked out before buying the game, I thought that, during bullet-time, the camera views would switch to something cool and cinematic. Not the case. You just dive at an angle and the camera follows where you point. In sum, very monotonous.

Another aspect that was seriously overhyped was the plot. I wont give anything away, but a lot is not addressed in the game--why was Max's family killed and he, subsequently framed? Also, I expected an intense, twisting plot. There was none. All the attempts at twists were failures and not once was I suprised by discoveries Max made on his quest.

What a dissapointment. When I had gotten sick of the game itself, all that drove me to the end was the anticipation of some closure with regard to the plot. But the game ended without any. Well, it was a boring ride and a stupid end. Dont buy it

Summary: Wonderful Game!
Review: This game is very good and lots of work was put into it. It even has its own engine (Max-FX) and the visuals are stunning. For younger players, there is a parental lock that removes adult scenes like Satanic icons. However, this game falls short of my expectations as it is quite short. After you complete a game, you will not want to play it again for a long time.

Some parts are quite scary, like the Prologues of the 2nd and 3rd parts of the game which involves Max walking on blood trails in a black environment, coupled with stereo sound effects of the sobbing of Max's wife and the cries of his dead baby.

If you are looking for a "one-off" game which you play once, this is definitely your choice.
