Summary: Without Contest The Most Enjoyable Game I've Played
Review: I'm a big fan of action games, first person shooters, and just about any type of combat game that is not side scrolling. When I heard about Max Payne I didn't think much of it, but when the price dropped to 19.99 here at Amazon.com I decided to go ahead and check it out.

The game is excellent. Beautiful graphics, extreme detail (get some water from one of those water things offices tend to have, and bubbles will rise up in the tube, gunshots on tile produce tile-like shards, gunshots on couches throw up fluffy stuff, etc.), the story keeps you wanting more of it, and finally the gameplay is outstanding. The bullet-time and shoot-dodge menuevers are incredible (you saw the Matrix right? now you get to play it!)--also it is very realistic, even the bosses only can take one or possibly two headshots, and Max will die even if he has full health if he takes a shot to the head.

The only downside of this game is its length. I beat the game (on the easy setting-you have to beat it before gaining harder settings) in 3 short afternoons. However this is overcome by the extensive Mod community that have created modifications of the game for free download. The mods I've seen range anywhere from Xiao-Xiao (if you don't know what that is, search on google-stick figure kung-fu, quite cool) to an authentic Matrix Lobby Scene, and the Matrix Reality Mod which allows you to play as Neo throughout the game (he has lots cooler moves than Max Payne, but Max is still cool).

The music of the game is good, but it can get somewhat repetitive at times, however most games seem to be like that.

I would give this game a 9.5 but becuase of amazons 1-5 scale I'll give it a 5.

Summary: Excellent stress relieve for a very casual gamer
Review: I haven't played much of any PC games in a few years, but recently was given Max Payne. Well, I find it to be a very good stress reliever. It is a shooter with excellent graphics and a very very lame story. After a few levels, I ended up just clicking through all of the story sequences and focus on movements and actions.

What I like the most is that I was able to play through the whole game and only once got stuck and had to consult one of numerous walkthroughs available on the net for free. Granted, I played the lowest difficulty level of the three. After, I completed the game, harder levels were unlocked, but the only difference with what I played was the increase in the number of bad guys and their resilience. The story and scenery remained the same.

Another thing I liked, was an extreme ease of operation - mouse and a bit of keyboard with no extra special keys/movements to memorize.

I also liked ability to save at any point, and utilized it pretty frequently.

Amazing graphics, even for my non gamer computer.

The game is about 95% shooter. With 3% labyrinth type of movement during the "dream sequences" (which was completely annoying) and about 2% of puzzles, which was fun to figure out.

On the negative side, terrible story and a few dream sequences are about the only flaws I can think of.

Good luck!

Summary: Awesome value
Review: I got this game when it was new and it was worth it, it's incredible! Initially I thought that the slow motion thing would be hard to use and pointless but it is really easy to use and incredibly fun; all you do is hit right mouse button and a direction and you dive in that direction in slow-mo. The story is really interesting, it's almost like watching a movie, you really get into it. The overall gameplay is superb, the weapons are cool (even though there aren't that many of them), and the realism is there. This game is definetly worth the money and will give you hours of fun, the only downside is that there is no multiplayer gaming...

Summary: Revolutionary
Review: When it first came out, it was revolutionary for its excellent execution of "The Matrix" slow motion bullet-time scenes. In fact, bullet-time wasn't just an effect, it was actually a critical technique to master in order to dispense with the bad guys which was no easy trick to pull off but the developers did. The story and cut scenes are well made. The mood is perfectly created with appropriate incidental music, cut-scenes, and well-defined characters. There are even a couple of eerie nightmare scenes and levels that are memorable long after you've beaten the game.

Summary: Short and Sweet, But What Was the Point?
Review: This is not a bad review for Max Payne, because Max Payne is not a bad game. It is, however, incredibly short and it leaves you feeling disappointed. I was excited to get this game, because I had been playing "Grand Theft Auto 3", so I was definitely going through my shoot-'em-up phase. However, it didn't take me long to become bored with it. In the end, it maybe took me a week to complete, and I didn't spend hours at a time playing it. When this happens, you don't feel as though you got your money's worth. Sure, Max has some great features, like the very Matrix-y Bullet-Time feature, that slows down time and allows you to dodge bullets. Though very cool-looking, I found this feature very difficult to use, and found myself dodging few, if any, bullets while in this mode. The graphics are great, and the storyline is respectable enough (in the beginning, his wife and baby are murdered - who can't sympathize with that?). But by the time I finished the game, I didn't have that usual feeling of satisfaction. I wasn't sad that it was over. In fact, I was a little relieved. I'm sorry to say it, but I can't say I got my money's worth. I will probably never play it again; it will just sit on my shelf collection dust. But, I'm giving it 3 stars because it is a fairly clever game, it did present me with a few challenges, and it was considered PC game of the year by numerous gaming magazines. I guess I can see why most people like it, I was just expecting more.

Summary: Max Payne
Review: Max Payne is one of the most additive games I have ever played. I just cannot stop playing it. If I stop, even just for a day, I feel like I'm going through withdrawal. Further more, the Mods for this game are Cool. (Play True Matrix 1.7 by The Ranger)

Summary: I EXPECTED MORE
Review: DANGER! Do not buy this game if you running Windows XP not worth the headach. All you get is just the start screen and the hope that it well run. NOT! back too DESKTOP. *Sigh* To respone too the person that sad he got the late's patch and it runs fine, he is lucky I got the late's patch after Hour wate, to down load a 15sec patch. Not to mention you have to regester with some online station too get it. Well its not that you have to spend any money for the patch its free but if you are reading this and got Windows XP don't bother buying this game. I thought since the game is not that old that it would work just fine on Windows XP. WRONG! O Ya it tell you in the READ ME FILES for a dum ass like me.THIS GAME DOES NOT SUPPORT SYSTEMS RUNNING WITH WINDOWS XP. I refuse too change my drivers for this game, got way too many other games that work just fine. I expected more from this game everyone says its great and plays great looks great. Well it looks great from the little bit I got to see from the start before it kicks me back too desktop. My system is old well its almost been 2 years since I had it, which in the computer age is old. =) It has a old 1.6 Pentium 4 with ATI 8500 128DDR video card and 512RR ram. I bought this system to play EQ Shadows of Luclin which it does Great. Thats why I bought Max Payne too play when EQ has those 12 hour down time patches. *SIGH* =( wish I had my MONEY BACK!

Summary: Engrossing...
Review: I'll admit upfront that I'm no expert gamer. In fact, the last game I "won" was for the original Nintendo. Nevertheless, I was intrigued enough with Max Payne that I bought it when it was on sale. I played without cheats and despite claims that it was "too short," I had a great time. The game is funny at times and the shooting is realistic. Winning is an incredible rush. Max is fanastic and I look forward to Max 2.

Summary: A fun game with a fun gimmick.
Review: Max Payne, a cop who is framed for murder and running from both the framers and the New York police. The story has a couple of good points and bad points, and is exaggerated greatly. "The police sirens were like an offtune opera" is much of the writing style used. Anyways, on to why the game was so succesful.

Bullet-Time, in which you slow down time in order to dodge bullets and also for better accuraccy. Not only is it NEEDED in most of the areas of the game, it is downright [...]. Max Payne( He must love his parents for choosing that name) twirls through the air, guns in both hand, shooting anyone who gets in his way.

The levels are pretty detailed, showing a grim side of New York City. You will see alleyways, deserted streets, Laundromats, clubs, and many other dark areas before you reach the end of the game. The sound is good, weapons sound like they should, and the enemies' scripted voice acting is hilarious.

Refrences to John Woo, Buffy, and other things can be found as easter-eggs, and when the fun is all done, there is also a small mod community, or if not you can make your own levels with the included programs. A solid buy for any PC, and also, to the reviewer who said he has Windows XP Professional and his game didn't work, most likely didn't download the newest patch, cause I have XP Pro and my game is running fine.
