Rating: Summary: A very nice game. Review: If you're looking for a one line review : buy it. It's a nice game.....Now let me get to the details...... 1.First of all lot's of people say it's a short game.I don't really have any frame of reference (as the last mission based game I played was Half-life).Compared to that, this is a blink of an eye.But if you're like me and can only get to play about an hour or so a day to relax, well, then this game should last you about 2-3 weeks.Game play involves anything between 15-25 hours (for the first time) 2.The system requirements....a lot has been said about the huge system requirements of the game.It is possible to play on lower systems but you will sacrifice gameplay quality. It doesn't really matter a whole lot except in a few levels/gunfights which take place in darkened environments and you may not be able to see enemies wearing black coats.I played on a p3 933 128 mb ram with a pathetic video card and I couldn't take it above medium settings. You want to ensure that you have at least a GeForce2 card to really play it well. Otherwise.... 3.The game puts you in he shoes of Max Payne,an NYC cop on the run because the police suspect him to be mafia and the mafia know him to be police. He has to avoid getting caught while at the same time hunt down those who framed him for the murder of his friends. In the beginning you start going up the ladder in the mafia killing everyone who stands in your way.But just as you think that you got your answers, a whole new conspiracy unfolds and suddenly you get a new target in the game.... The cloak and dagger in the game is done very slickly and it ties in very slickly with the story. 4.Now let's get down to the game itself....It's a really great game. You must have heard of bullet time-it's the best innovation in shooters for a long time. Many people say that you get bored of it in time but I didn't.If you can play with all the effects turned on it must be a fabulous visual experience. However the gameplay is very linear. Most of the time you are either infiltrating or escaping from buildins etc.In hindsight, all the levels are cliched : a disused subway station,a seedy new york night club,an empty shipyard,a top secret research facility etc.But it's all woven into the story brilliantly.Soon you might get into the habit of going through a door, seeing which bad guys are there, then restarting where you last saved it and going through the door prepared (all just to save health). It happened to me for a few levels till Ii figured out that it was spoiling the experience. If you do buy the game, beware of turning it into just a quest to get throught the level with full health etc.Another point which should be mentioned... this game has adult content (and it's not the kind where game developers have to put ratings on their boxes because gibs fly etc)It truly has adult content and sensitive players may want to excercise the content control option. 5.The question is, after you've played the game once...then what? When you play the game once over,2 new modes of playing are unlocked. The first, playing the same game with harder settings and the second, playing the same game against a clock ie. you have limited time to finish each level. But I can't for the life of me understand why anyone would want to play the game again! And herein lies the game's biggest weakness....After you play the game once, there is nothing you can do with it again. It's not like multiplayer games where you can play again and again and it's never the same game twice. In fact there is no multiplayer mode at all and the game has no netcode (I think) so you can never really play against anyone. When the developers released it I think they thought that the game would continue due to mods. Well right now there are only small mods which convert certain aspects of gameplay (like different weapons, cool backflips etc. which don't really enhance the gameplay experience.....they just make it look better). If you buy this game you should definitely download theultimate mod by uxraf. It's the best of the mods I just mentioned. However what you'll really be looking for is total conversions. There are quite a few in development but I think most of them won't be ready till the early part of next year. So that's the deal....if you buy this game, you won't regret it.Not until you finish it anyway. After that you'll be clueless as to what should be done next. That's where I am right now.Let's hope some really good mods are made.I'm keeping my fingers crossed....
Rating: Summary: For all 007 and Syphon Filter Lovers! Review: I love this game. Yes there are many great games with action, adventure, great guns, great effects, and excellent graphics. But not all games have great matrix-type slow motion effects and lots of other graphic action moves. This is a great game for everyone who likes 007 and Syphon Filter type games. It is exciting and has fantastic moves and levels. This game is definitely one of the best modern games ever! -------------------------AHMED MASHHOOD--------------------------
Rating: Summary: help Review: I bought this game for my son for his birthday and we can't even load it, we tried on two different computers and both times got a 'not enough memory ' message, a huge dissapointment to say the least, he has friends with lower memory computers and they have had no problems. My computer runs at 500 mhz and my sons is a brand new computer at 600 mhz, any ideas anyone?
Rating: Summary: The gameplay makes up for the clichés. Review: The story is one big cliché, the game even admits it at the middle of it. But this is still one hell of a game. To think of it this game started years ago, and I was sure it was heading down the utterly forgettable Duke Nukem 3D clone lane (yes, the game was announced that way back) but it seems that Matrix gave Remedy the correct dose of inspiration, for without Bullet Time, this game would be terrible. Bullet Time isn't a gimmick or a late addition trying to save the game (Can you say Red Faction's destructable scenario?). It's amazingly useful, and the game would be pretty much impossible without it. It saves the game from being just another run-of-the-mill shooter to probably one of the best games of the year (The only better game that pops into my mind this year is Operation Flashpoint) The story is told by very well drawn and voiced over comic book strips. Pretty much everything Max Payne says has been said over and over again a hundred times before in movies and other comic books. I kind of expected that after seeing his last name (Payne - Pain. Oh so clever!) but still... The graphics are awesome. This is the kind of game that makes you proud to own a good video card, or lower your head in shame when you watch the slide-show with a Voodoo 1. The textures are incredibly crisp, the lighting effects are awesome. But of course, the incredible engine makes it all look better when you slow it down with Bullet Time. The only thing I think they did poorly was Max Payne's face. It looks like he has some extremely serious problem in his bowels, and forgot to use a bathroom. Seriously, his face looks terrible. The sound effects are also top-notch. The voice-overs are incredible, something you only see outside console games (sadly enough). The guns sound great as well, so does the incredible music. Everything fits together perfectly, like a tight jigsaw puzzle. The game lasts about 10-15 hours, but with the additionable unlockable difficulty modes and the final extra (trust me, it's worth it), the game will last you a while. Plus, as a corridor shooter, the fun of finishing it again after six months is always present. Awesome graphics, incredible gameplay, great replay value, great sound effects. Max Payne pretty much has it all. Buy it. It lives up to the 3D REALMS name it has stamped on it's box. Not since Duke Nukem 3D I have enjoyed a "brainless" shooter as much as this. You can't afford to miss this masterpiece.
Rating: Summary: SLICK! Review: This game rocks! The average gamer will probably beat it within about 13-14 hours but it will be 13-14 hours of gaming bliss! The bullet time is awesome, the first time I jumped forward in bullet time, dual berettas blazing, watching bullets fly past my head in slo-mo, I yelled out loud "WHOA!" Gorgeous graphics, great in-game animation, I had no slowdown at all (P3 933, 256RAM, 64MB DDR Geforce 2) This is definately a PG rated game however, I wouldn't recommend it for any parents buying games for their young ones. It has some relatively graphic content and a disturbing plot. For anyone else, get it, you'll love it.
Rating: Summary: Ready for Payne? Review: Max Payne is the best game of 2001. Period. I was mesmerized from beginning to end by the gameplay, the action, the plot, everything. The graphics are superb, and Bullet-time is a very thrilling and useful feature that I'm sure will appear in many other games now.
Rating: Summary: Professional Drivers, Ski Jumpers, Vodka. . . Review: and Max Payne. The Finns have a new area of expertise and it's totally immersive single player 3rd person action shooters. I'm a complete convert. Until MP I had NEVER played a 3rd person game for more than an hour or so. I HATED 3rd person, it's for consoles. Now I'm on board. There's no more praise I can heap on this game that hasn't already been heaped, but I can agree with every other reviewer who has said. . . Game of the Year Hands Down
Rating: Summary: Great fun Review: This game was great fun! I don't have a state of the art machine just a PII 300, 384 megs of RAM and a Creative GeForce2 Ultra. It ran wonderfully throughout. I have no doubt that it would have been even better with a faster machine but just wanted it known that us Troglodytes can play too. Memory is cheap!
Rating: Summary: What type of gamer are you?? Review: Definitely "Max Payne" has a lot of innovations to show, technically speaking. The special effects of slowing time (the Matrix-style effects), bullet time, special dodge maneuvers are all unique to this game. Besides this it is quite a no-brainer of a game and quite a short one as well. Decide what type of a gamer are you... The "Deus Ex" type, where you have to think, interact, interrogate, read etc... in order to survive, or the Duke Nukem type where you go around shooting and shooting and .... Personally I was deeply disapponited in this game.
Rating: Summary: BUY MAX PAYNE NOW!!!!!!! Review: If you are going to get one action game this year, make it MAX PAYNE. The bullet-time moves and action will fill you with suspense! The weapons, textures, bad-guys :) and story are 5 star quality. There are options for video/audio for not-so-great computers. I recommend this to everybody who enjoys action games, or anybody who wants to try one. This IS the best game this year.
