Summary: John Woo would be proud...
Review: I usually don't review a video game unless it really strikes my fancy. Max Payne did that and more. As a whole, it really is just another third-person shooter where you wonder from room to room killing as many bad guys as possible while a super cliched plot developes around the action.

What the hell is wrong with that?!?!

Stylistically, it would be hard to find this game's equal. This game has film-noir written all over it with nods to Hong Kong action visionary; John Woo. To the dirtiest of slums, to creepy Satanic feel of Punchenello's night club, Max Payne presents a gritty atmosphere that doesn't let up. Never does a level feel out of place in the game, which makes the game more engrossing.

The story is of the "been there, seen that" variety. However, not many can pull it off with the style the directors did in this game. While in many a moments very cheesy, it fits the tone of the game extremely well and plays to the overal hopelessness that is our anti-hero Max Payne. The story is told like in a graphic novel format that breaks up the action. The facial expressions of Max himself make these scenes a real treat. The graphics are quite good. Character models look pretty good as do the lo-cals and the weapons.

The mechanics of the game are what really makes this game shine. The action itself is smooth as silk, keeping the flow of the game seeming natural and never jarring. The save system is extremely liberal(meaning save anywhere)which makes things even better. The bullet-time is both beautiful to watch as it usefull to you sucess in the game, making more than just a pretty feature. Some slight dips in frame rate are the only minor problem I noticed in play mechanics(it occasionally makes gun fights more difficult). But when your blasting some punk with double barretts that would make Chou-Yun Fat blush, do you really care?

Its not the perfect game(it also tends to be a bit repetetive sometimes), but is certainly a good start. With a openended conlusion, one can only hope we'll be seeing more of our renegade NYC cop in action sometime in the future...

p.s. is it just me, or does the cover picture of Max Payne make him look like Jason Newsted(former bassplayer for Metallica)?

Summary: The game is pretty fun but the mod community makes it better
Review: Max Payne has quite a good plot, but I never really got into it. Probably because I was too busy hopping across halls in slow motion with my trusted Colt. This game is a step in the right direction for games. Innovation. Being innovative and unique is what gets a game into the shelf of greatness. While this game doesn't have great replayability in the game itself it's worth playing again to experience bullet-time.

What saves the game from having the attitude of "That was cool, lets sell it now" is the mod community. Go to maxpaynecenter.com and look at some of the mods like kung-fu, railgun, new levels, railgun, and so many more. Kung-fu is loads of fun although a little out of control, but still very cool.

While Max Payne is a very cool game it paves the way for a new style of gameplay. Perhaps the next game using this technology will have something to do beyond bullet-time. That game may be the Matrix. We'll just have to wait and find out.

Summary: The first game I wanted to play twice!
Review: Ok, so I've been playing video games since the days of the Apple II+. And this is the first -- the FIRST -- game that I have ever wanted to play again after finishing it the first time. My one criticism is that it is a tad too short. In my opinion, it is the best game of the last year and a half. I look forward to a sequal. Hopefully, the next one will have a better editor so that a good mod community can grow strong.

Summary: great game
Review: It has not been so impressive on me as the Duke Nuke'em 3D few years back, but still it is one of the best games in its class (FPP shoot them up). It has good plot, nice movie sequences and good graphics. It was so enjoyable that I played it until the very end, seldom using the walktrough or cheats (they were necessary onlu twice through the whole game). Well worth the money.

Summary: Great at first, not fun in the long run
Review: The graphics in this game are very realistic from the people, to the bullet holes in the walls. The only thing that isn't realisitc is when somebody dies and lays flat over an edge and doesn't conform to the step. The fire in the game looks very realistic.

The game lacks Multiplayer. This game would be loads better if it was multiplayer.

Bullet Time slows down time to allow you to kill all enemy's in a room with out getting killed yourself. Due to the time being slowed down, the graphics FPS will shoot through the roof, unless you have a really ...bad computer.

The game gets very boring after you beat it. You can get lost in the levels if you stray from the path, it's sort of annoying. I recommend playing it at a friends house or simply borrow it from a friend and play it, not worth buying.

Summary: An brief experience you must not miss!
Review: Max Payne is short, and that is what most will tell. What it lacks in length it makes up in sheer gaming quality. The action is non-stop, the graphics are spectacular, and you will never forget bullet-time. After you have completed this unforgettable game, you will be attempting to pull off bullet-time in other games out of sheer habit, wishing you could pull off that slow-mo barrel roll over a bartable chasing 2 baddies:). The storyline is great, and for action junkies the comic book format will help keep them focused. One of the great features that makes up for the lack of multiplayer tenfold, are the great mods available...

Summary: One of the Best, Realistic, and Amazing games ever made
Review: I heard some things about this game. One day as i passed it in an electronics store I picked it up and started looking. The game looked alright but for the price i was a little iffy. I said what the heck and bought it. Now this game is one of my favorites. The graphics are amazing. I cannot describe how realistic the images look. This game was worth every penny. If you like shooting games like GTA3 the i reccomend 100% be warned that this game is not for little kids.
