Summary: I beg to differ...
Review: Since the second X-Pack (Secret Weapons) is going to be released in about two weeks, I thought it might be interesting to provide my thoughts on the very first X-Pack (Road to Rome) which was released some months ago...

Most of the reviews for the first X-Pack on this Amazon page are quite old and were made right after the Road to Rome X-Pack was released. They are positive reviews; but I would suggest that should those very same reviewers write about 'Road to Rome' today, they may indeed have a different perspective on this first X-Pack.

As much as I loved the Original 'Battlefield 1942', I was ultimately quite disappointed with 'Road to Rome'. Indeed today, current on-line 'Battlefield' players seldom play the 'Road to' maps anymore and instead prefer to play the original 'Battlefield' maps. The 'Road' x-pack provided inferior weapons, unacceptable map gliches (to be mentioned later), silly placement of defensive fixed weapons (such as AA guns in unlikely defensive deployments), and an overall uninteresting and rather boring gaming experience. As one writer (at another on-line forum) put it, 'why would I want to spend money on an X-Pack that gives me weaker weapons than in the original Battlefield?' Granted EA was trying to be 'historically correct' as the weapons of the 'French'or 'Italian' armies (in 'Road to Rome')were certainly inferior to the armies (US, Russia, Germany, Japan,)found in the original 'Battlefield' game. But 'historical correctness' does not make for a fun x-pack game; especially when your weapons are weaker than the original 'Battlefield' game and are less fun to play or use.

Regarding the 'Road to ...' maps, they are beautifully detailed, and richer in devlopment and scope than the original 'Battlefield' maps. Unfortunately, they are also much more boring to play--hence today they are rarely played on the Internet; while the original 'Battlefield' maps continue to be played daily. They 'Road to Rome' X-Pack maps are boring for a number of reasons, some of which I will detail here:

1) Unfixed Map gliches: Of all of the 'Road to Rome' maps, the best map is 'Husky.' Husky however also has a map glitch which renders it almost unwinnable by the Axis Team unless the Ally team is populated by veritable newbies to the game. I speak of course of the 'infamous' wall gliche which allows Allies to sneak around the back of the map by climbing (not x-pack jumping which was even worse until patched, this is a permanent wall glitch)a wall/hill which was designed to be insurmountable. Well, the designers made a mistake and haven't fixed it. Therefore the Ally team wins this map virtually every time (unless newbies are involved). It's really a shame because except for this (albeit huge) glich, the 'Husky' map would be one of the best of any of the maps, including the originals.

2) Poor design and deployment of fixed placement defensive weapons: Well, the AA gun emplacements come to mind. The 'Road to Rome' X-pack seemed to have been designed during a period in which the EA designers were too heavily influenced by 'pilots' on their own staff, or perhaps by game-testers who were too heavily airplane oriented. Thus we got the 1.3 patch and the 'Road to Rome' maps with some very strange AA gun locations which render them almost useless. To give EA credit, they have since tried to rectify this particular issue with the 1.4 Patch which brings the AA gun back into the game by making them more effetive against planes (In essence, they reverted back to the 1.2 patch). Unfortunately the 1.4 Patch cannot help the AA guns too much in the 'Road to Rome' maps as the permanent deployment of most (not all, just most) of the AA guns are too far away from the normal traffic patterns of airplanes and just about everything else.

3) Maps like 'Cassino': I must state that I actually like the Monte Cassino map though I know that most people detest it. The idea was sound, and the map was designed for the (French) allies to win with heavy artillary, ala The Priests. This, of course, requires a strong coordinated effort by a like-minded team willing to work as a team and as an army. Well, unless you are in a clan or you play with a bunch of team players (whom you know), this 'heavy artillary' strategy is rendered in-effective as soon as this map begins. Instead the true 'usable' strategy which has devloped (and works mainly vs. poorer axis players) is to try to sneak an infantryman through the killing zone, sneak to the back of the map, capture the monastery flags and work your way down the hill. Not a sound strategy against truly good players.

3) Santa Croce Map: Well the problem with this map is that it's really just the 'BattleAxe' map (round and round you go capturing and losing flags) only not as fun...

In summary, the 'Road to Rome' X-pack just isn't very fun to play and THAT is the first rule of thumb for any game or X-pack. It's gotta be fun. Hopefully the upcoming 'Secret Weapons' will include weapons and maps that are a) fun and b)not inferior to the original 'Battlefield' weapons and maps.

Summary: Great Game
Review: Battlefield 1942 is a fun game... The physics of the vehicles aren't terribly detailed and you need a pretty high-end computer to run it smoothly, and broadband internet to play multiplayer but even single-player you can have a lot of fun. Many aspects of the game are somewhat like an arcade style shooter/simulation... There are a lot of controls, but once you get used to them it's pretty simple. I have read that people thought that there weren't enough maps with the original game without any expansions, but I do not have any of the expansions and don't really plan on buying any of them but I am perfectly happy with what I have now. If you look around on the internet (www.planetbattlefield.com is a great site with a lot of mods) you can find mods which add vehicles, weapons, and lots of other stuff. You can download new maps if you are really bored with the ones provided. My personal favorite mod (and the only one I have) is called Desert Combat. It takes place in modern days and adds new weapons for the Americans (or Coallition) like the M16, M249, M203 grenade launcher, and many more. New vehicles include helicopters (Blackhawk and Apache for the Allies/Coalition), Harrier, A-10, M1 Abrahms, and more. The maps are the same (but there are some extra like on El Alamein there is a day 2, 3, and maybe more than that... I forget.)
If you are still there you are my friend and are really cool and should win lots of money...

...Anyway... Overall, I think Battlefield is a great game, tremendously fun, and (although a little bit pricey for a game that came out so long ago), a great value. You can spend many hours just playing single player... Don't even get me started about playing at internet cafe... Place... Things...

...Go! Wash your ankles!

Summary: Multiplayer Madness
Review: I have played this game and its expansion pack at my local LAN gaming center, and it is such a rush. With 5 character classes (scout, assault, anti-tank, medic, and engineer), many vehicles, maps, and fast paced play, i would highly recommend it. This deluxe set is a pretty good price compared to what else you see.

Summary: Awesome Game with some flaws
Review: Of all the WWII simulation games out there, Battlefield 1942 is by far the most fun. In the vein of Unreal Tournament, BF1942 is a multiplayer on-line game in which teams of players compete in games such as capture the flag, 'control' type games that require you to hold positions from the enemy, and other such games.

The graphics are excellent and the thrill of battle is always there. Playing online is fun, if you can get past some rather idiotic players spewing unintelligable jibberish all over the screen, and players tend to work together to achieve the game goals.

There are a few flaws in the game, mostly from the single player perspective. The AI of your computer controlled teammates is, for lack of a better word, retarded. Since the single player game consists of 'Control' missions, you must hold off yor key points from enemy take-over. Unfortunately, your computer teammates do nothing but work against you. More often than not, they kill each other with friendly fire. They are never capable of holding their positions, especially in later levels, requiring you to do all the work for the map. Maps that have 5 or more control points are extremely difficult to handle, especially on your own. Since computer AI is so dumb, you end up having to fight off legions of enemy forces by yourself, most of the time unsuccessfully.

Other problems include AI control of vehicles. While it is easier to let the computer teammate take control of a difficult to manuever vehicle such as a plane, often times their flight patterns are bizarre. They will sometimes go off the map(where you will beging to take automatic friendly fire), or just circle one area of the map, not doing anything, while all the action takes place somewhere else. Other examples include manning tanks, with the AI teammate just sitting in one position, not doing anything, while you're stuck on top manning the machine gun. Little problems like that get very annoying, and drag the quality of the game down an entire star.

But otherwise, this game is alot of fun. The thrill of fighting in World War II is all there and it is a great simulation. This is probably one of the better computer games available right now. Unfortunately the aforementioned flaws will try your patience and you will have to learn how to be a one-man army while the enemy uses your computer teammates for target practice.

Summary: Game of the year??? Thouroughly disappointed!
Review: I got this game because of all the hype. Also, this is from the singleplayer experience, and not the multiplayer.

I've played MOHAA and Ghost Recon a lot, as well as Halo on Xbox, and I thought this would be a comporable game, if not better from all the hype I heard. Its not. There isn't much to it - AI is either too stupid (you can run right past the enemy and wait, and then shoot them in the back before they even notices you're there - or you can crank it up and its too hard (being sniped by someone pretty much invisible).

Also, my biggest gripe is I don't like having a very limited amount of time to clear a level. Often when I thought "hey this game is getting fun", the level would end and its on to the next one.

They do a poor job recreating historic battles of WWII. D-Day is a joke. HOHAA is much better in that regard.

You also spend a lot of time just trying to get to and find the action. How fun is that? Walking around until a sniper kills you. Then, you always have to click a new spawn point - that gets tiresome fast, and you always have to wait between 10 and 20 seconds before you spawn.

Also, sometimes the AI grabs the coolest weapons before you get a chance and you're left walking. Things like the boats are sometimes impossible to figure out how to get out of when you're by yourself. Which reminds me, its unrealistic how alone you often are in this game - just you and the enemy it seems - not realistic at all.

Other vehicles are nearly impossible to fly and attack with, like the planes. The maps are also so small you fly out of them in a few seconds. Not fun. I gave up on flying the planes several times.

The Battleships are also almost always useless as well, as you can't see the shore or other ships you're shelling.

This game says its both single player and multiplayer, but its obviously built for multiplayer first, and the singleplayer parts were obviously designed as an afterthought. I feel I was mislead about this game, wish I could get my money back and buy Half Life or Splinter Cell - or I'm hoping the PC Halo or Half Life 2 is cool.

For multiplayer, you'd better have a fast machine and broadband, otherwise forget it.

Being able to control different vehicles is fun, especially the tanks, but game of the year? I think not. I feel ripped off. If you gave this game 4 stars you've probably never played Halo or MOHAA. Sorry, but I just don't get it.

Summary: The huge multiplayer real wwII action shooter has arrived!
Review: I heard a lot of great comments about Battle Field 1942: Awesome action, real-time war--realistic wwII hardware and equipement use, great engine, very fun play; and more. Indeed I was intrigued, and eventually after experiencing a very fun demo, i had to pick this one up. It is a must-have. Battlefield 1942 is set in the World War II stage of time, where times are most dire and demanding. The game features a rendered functional and beatiful engine, with very nice geometry, optimizations, a mix dynamic lightning maps and static bitmaps, good shadow renders, nice character detail and environment detail, great animations, realistic sound effects and the standard awesome use of hardware 3-D sound support, great interface, etc. SO on. The game is quite laggy online, but is fine on lan. IT is really fun, you can control all kinds of vehicles on wide open-ended gorgerous realistic maps, such as tanks, jeeps, airplanes, ships, etc. The maps are set on places such as islands, etc. It's a great game and well worth the price--on my 9500 pro the game performs at 1024x768x32 with all other settings maxed out averagely at 60fps, but drops while playing online and in intense combat. The game is very laggy online, even on high speed internet broadband(Cable/DSL) access. Overall I see why Battle Field 1942 won multiplayer game of the year! I seriously recommend this game...:)

Summary: Great game, if you have top-notch 'puter and hi-speed cable
Review: If you're reading this, most likely you're debating whether or not to buy this game. My recommendation would be "absolutely." I picked it up a month ago and for a guy who's not addicted to computer games, I've had a heckuva time drawing myself away from this one. To put it simply, it kicks butt. Here's why I think so...

I enjoy most First-person-shooters and this one is no exception. The gameplay is smooth and intuitive and the options for attack are plentiful. Each of the 5 classifications of soldiers provide an interesting way to take on the enemy, but none are guaranteed to keep you alive, hence the challenge of the game. Not since Team Fortress Classic have I seen an FPS that has done such a good job balacing the different character classes. (My favorite is the Engineer.)

One aspect I really love is the inclusion of vehicles; air, sea and land. They are all incredibly easy to use ,(although a joystick for the airplanes is pretty necessary in order to fly to your full potential), and add a fun, new element of gameplay that you're probably not accustomed to.

For example, it's one thing to round a hilltop and see enemy infantry running your way, but you haven't lived until you've had tank turrets tracking you, planes swooping down on your position and enemy battleships launching artillery at you from miles away. To quote a friend, "You know the games a blast when you're sitting in the ball turret gunner position on a bomber, you see a guy in a parachute floating by, and you realize it's the pilot of your plane. Sweeeet."

Another pro is the wide variety of maps included. I only have the basic game, (not the expansion), and I'm fully satisfied with the number of map choices I have. Maps range from winter locals to tropical island battles, including a well-made Omaha Beach recreation. A few maps are just a tad too large, but I just don't play those maps very often, so no big deal.

One other thing to note is that some people have griped about the system requirements for this game. True enough, you need a top-notch computer to fully enjoy it, as well as hi-speed internet access. Without either of these, it's probably not worth buying at all. (Kind of like buying a Ferrari in a town where every road has 25 MPH speed limits.) But, if you've got a good system and fast Internet access, you're golden.

That all said, this is a great game and one I'll probably play for quite a long time.

One more note...I had Medal of Honor before this and one reason I held off buying B'field 1942 for awhile was because I figured it was more of the same. Waaaay wrong. MoH is wonderful for single player, but B'field is just leages ahead of MoH when it comes to Multiplayer.
