Rating: Summary: Set Phasers TO KILL! Review: I am exited for this game because it has the Quake III Arena ingine under the hood. Let me remind you the Quake III engine is a work of art. Soo smooth and pretty. The network code isnt like Counter-Strike's but that is because it is a all out fastpaced and graphic filled wonder. OK soo what about that. The game play will be great in this Trek of all Treks. The framrates will be smooth and action will be intense. The sound will emerse you with full sourround sound. It will be interesting seeing how they pull off the enviroments. The Q3A engine hasent been tested like the Unreal engine has for large, expansive areas.I recamend this because i truly believe any Star Treker with a good system will enjoy playing as a character in their show. =Þ
Rating: Summary: Best first person shooter since half life Review: For those gamers like myself have been waiting for the next challenge since half life, star trek elite force fills the need quite nicely The sound is excellent, the cinematic sequences set the scene well, if only a little bit too long in length sometimes. The mixture of blasting ala quake 3 and stealth missions adds some variety. Some mini missions have a time limit to add to the tension. This isn't half life though but its the best game I've played recently that comes even close.
Rating: Summary: Great for a Trek Game; good FPS overall Review: The Good: It was designed by Ravensoft (who have a lot of Id people on their team) and it's running off of the Q3 engine. Graphically, it's gosh darn purty. The lighting is superb and the architecture, creature designs, and weapon designs are all top-notch (as one would expect from Ravensoft). The only graphics niggle I have is that the mouths aren't made of polygons, but are synced bitmaps (of course, to date, Half-Life is the ONLY game to get that right). The missions are, overall, interesting, with a nice mix between puzzle and action. A lot of the missions include team members who are more than just grunts (many of the scripts work trigger individual members for individual tasks). The puzzle missions are, for the most part, well designed and more interesting that the standard key-find quests that are typical to the genre. The sound is very nice too, although I wish they had included explicit EAX support. The one "stealth" mission, in particular, made good use of that. Most of the weapons are quite interesting, with all of them featuring a secondary fire mode -- the default phasers, in particular, are very fun to use, I love beam weapons. I especially liked the rationalization for the traditional FPS Bad o' Weapons: a portable replicator that you carry with you. And finally, the Borg have that cool laser-eye thingie that's just oh-so-cool. :-) The Bad: Well, it *is* Voyager. For the most part, that didn't bother me, although the long (and uninterruptible) cinematics involving the REAL LIVE (tm) voices of various actors got on my nerves. There's also a certain cloying PC-ness to the game that annoyed me, especially given that it IS, after all, an FPS. The game's attempts to sanitize a massive kill-fest left me a bit woozy, at times. The plot is also less than impressive, although (frankly) it was more interesting than most of the Voyager TV episodes I've seen, and it was more than adequate for a genre that is often allergic to the whole notion of plot. There were certain points where the game suffered from "What do I do now?" syndrome, although nothing too bad (when it doubt, look for a tunnel to crawl into). Likewise, on Voyager, the doors are unlabeled so one is often required to blunder around in the between mission phases. On that note, some of the architecture is a bit "crowded". This is especially true on Voyager where there are loads of fake doors that you can't enter (and I just HATE that in a game). The game length is a bit short (but I've been spoiled by Half-Life, so take that with a grain of salt). Finally, the great big bugaboo of most FPS's -- The AI: it sucked. All too often, the game resorts to simply swarming you with enemies. There were few cases where you couldn't even discern that there *was* any AI (although there were a couple of great skirmish sequences where the enemy actively sought refuge behind crates). In terms of combat, much of the game resembles Doom. Overall, I enjoyed it. I'd recommend it if (like me) you're feeling a bit starved for a decent FPS. Just don't blow any significant amount of money on it.
Rating: Summary: Good content and gameplay Review: I'm not huge on FPShooters -- I have a shareware version of Blood in case I feel the need to blow things away -- but I must admit that STV:EF captures the flavour of an actual episode and mixes that with good gameplay. The visuals are excellent -- this is the first game to actually give gamers a feel of what moving around a starship is like -- and the environment of the Trek universe is wonderful to explore. It's unfortunate that this kind of representation in a game was not available in the heyday of ST:TNG, but alas. Good FPS, good graphics and feel for the Trek representation -- everything points to good; not great or poor, but "good."
Rating: Summary: Excellent job on this one Review: The people at Raven did an excellent job with this game. It utilizes the Quake III engine, thus the graphics are superb. It offers both a single player, story line, gaming experience (which Quake III is lacking) and a Deathmatch/tournament, Team Deathmatch and Capture the Flag game play like Quake III. It is like having two games in one, and as a matter of fact, the game puts two icons on your desktop to separate the two types of games. As mod/map/model makers get geared up on this title, there should be some very interesting things you can add to the basic version. In fact, there are a handfull of new maps already available. Moreover, there are many internet servers running this game so you can indulge in internet play. The weapons are pretty cool, each has a secondary fire mode, but too many are difficult to use well in the heat of the fire fight, and require you to be on target. Not enough of the weapons cause collateral damage. I actually like this title better than Quake III.
Rating: Summary: Surprisingly satisfying Review: Given the history of previous games based on the Star Trek license, I didn't have high hopes for this game. That's why I was really blown away when I finally played it. While it's not quite the ultimate FPS that UT or Q3 are, it takes the best elements of these games and combines them with the best element of Half-Life- the story. The Elite Force story, while not entirely original, is quite rich as well-told. Like in Half-Life, your character plays a pivitol role in the story and actually experiences a true character arc (unlike Gordon Freeman, IMO). Two criticisms- First, I found the physics to be a little jerky. Not quite as smooth as Q3, which is strange considering this game uses that engine. Second, the game play was just a little too easy- the creatures weren't all that challenging. Even the bosses. Oh, and one more thing- the AI of your teammates was pretty sad. They kept running in front of my line of fire and then yelling at me when I shot them. This game is the first one since Half-Life that, like a good book, I could not pull myself away from. And like a REALLY good book, it's worth playing a second time through.
Rating: Summary: Smoke but no Flame Review: For all the hype this game has received, there is nothing special about the game. While the graphics are excellent, the story is rather dull and the gameplay quite easy, even on the most difficult setting. You may have to repeat a mission two or three times, but no more than this, and you'll have finished all levels within a week (or a few days if you spend much time on the computer playing games). There is very little to think about when playing this game except whether you can gun down your enemies, which will disappoint those interested in exercising their wits as well as their trigger finger. With the Quake engine and the possible storylines, this game could have been something. Once again, Star Trek fans will have to wait for decent action game worthy of the name Star Trek.
Rating: Summary: Finally, a great Star Trek game! Review: As successful as the Star Trek franchise has been, I have always been amazed at how bad Trek computer games are. This one, however, is awesome. Rather than just repeat what others have already pointed out, let me summarize... Cool stuff: * Using the holodeck to practice with new weapons on gunslingers in the old west or knights of Camelot. * Choosing to be a male or female character. * Finally a "logical" explanation for how you can possibly haul around all that gear: a portable transporter buffer. Your weapons simply materialize! * Taking a character's-eye-view ride on the transporter. * The borg! * and a quite engaging story Could be improved... * Weapons are fairly typical, though the blast graphics are awesome. * Very linear gameplay. I actually like this, but others may not.
Rating: Summary: I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED! Review: I have been waiting for this game to come out for the last couple of months. I have read the reviews on various sites, including this one, about how impressed various people have been with both the demo and the final release version. I received my copy two days ago and I can't believe this is the game I waited so long for! It is terrible! The missions are WAY too easy and the maps are very lame! The 'great voices' and 'stunning graphics' I have read about sure didn't leave that impression on me! The voices were awful for the most part. The graphics were no better than half-life, which came out two years ago! I have twice the system requirements listed on the box and I still experieced lock ups and jittery graphics. This game is very buggy, which is inexcuseable for a major software company like Activision to release. The 'great story line' I have read about is laughable. There are so many things in this game that left me wondering how many 8 year olds it took to write the story line I lost count. There are mistakes and improbable circumstances galore - even for a Star Trek setting. Don't buy this game. If you want a decent first person shooter with a good storyline get Half-Life. If you want a first person game with good graphics get Soldier of Fortune. This is nothing more than a waste of your money and time.
Rating: Summary: This is a "MUST" Review: when i heard about Elite Force, i wasn't thrilled about it, but after i played a demo i got from PC Gamer, i saw that it was extremely good! I did know, it used the Quake III engine, and would therefor have the same graphics, not that the graphics from Q3 are bad, but i'd prefer the graphics used in Deus Ex and Soldiers of Fortune!... well i bought it, and i don't regret the 50$ Everything about the game is very detailed, and well done, such as... the graphics, the same as Q3, pretty nice... all scenario is very detailed and beautiful. The weapons are detailed, and the rails, or blasts, are extremely cool. Also storywise, it's great, and promotes the game. The plot is very much like a Voyager episode, and you really feel, like you are one of it's crew..... a guest star. a fantastic game, you won't regret it.... much action, good story... etc This is a "MUST"
