Rating: Summary: Not Quite As Good as It Appears Review: Well, I'd say I was a little disappointed when I booted up Operation Flashpoint for the first time and saw it's weak graphics and low detail. I have a very fast system with an Nvidia TnT card and on the highest settings it doesn't look so hot. Trees, foliage are just opaque clumps when you get up close to them. You can hide in the bushes but can't see through them unless your head is sticking all the way out. My point is, for all the hype and excitement the developers should have spent much more time on the terrains, and renditions of objects, soldiers etc. The voices are very poor, sounds like a couple of high school kids worked on this. Games like Deadly Dozen, even though the gameplay is much more basic, will be much more fun for most people because of the excellent ambient sounds, amazing lighting and textures, and even the grass sways in the wind. In my opinion Operation Flashpoint could have been much more than it is. I'd say save your money for Medal Of Honor/Allied Assault, or try Deadly Dozen at half the price. Another game that surpasses Operation Flashpoint is Hidden And Dangerous, which is 2 years older, the game play and enviornments squash that of Operation Flashpoint.
Rating: Summary: It's wourth buying a new computer Review: This game is exactly what you dreamed of having when you REALLY wanted to play soldier. Having actually served in a European army let me tell you: this is as real as it gets without having to pick up the brass, i.e. all the fun parts without any of the boring stuff (unless you count the mediocre voices in the game). I don't own the game, my company laptop only has 64 RAM which is too slow, but I have played this game for hours & hours at friends, in internet cafés, frankly anywhere I could get my hands on it. I have also checked out the updates and let me tell you, it just gets better. The StG-77 (Steyer-AUG) performs exactly like it really does, tanks (mostly) move like they really do, and you will sweat real bullets when the lead starts flying. Most importantly, this games WIPES OUT Ghost Recon & the rest of the Big Business Boys. It's hot quality from a small company in a small ex-Warsaw Pact country that put a lot of love and care and BRAINS into it, which is better then Tom Clancy's scam artist can produce for one. I envy nothing more then those who can play the game in multiplayer mode with large set teams and good equipment. BUY IT
Rating: Summary: Excellent War Sim. Review: This game is by far the most realistic War/Battle simulation I've ever played. The plotline is intresting and the battles were sensational. The game allows you to drive everything and fly anything in the game. Unheard of in any past shooters. Also it allows you to pick up weapons and ammo from dead soldiers but unlike the 007 shooters you do have the realistic limitations. You can not for example carry a rocket launcher, machine gun 50 hand grenades and you ever important sniper rifle(better make sure you brought along a combat sherpa). I have always found that games that do not limit your carrying load to be unrealistic. In addition unlike the Rainbow 6 games the enemy AI can't just kill you with 1 short burst, They miss their first few shots. And this is definately not Close Quaters Battle. You have to nail the guy a Visual Range making it more challenging. My only complaint is that Operation Flashpoint 2 isn't out yet. And that the Campaign is too short. I have recommended this game to all my friends who play PC games. The US Marines have even purchased a modified version of this game for training their troops. Hands down an excellent game. Why are you waiting? BUY THIS GAME NOW!
Rating: Summary: The best combat simulation game I've ever played Review: You can have two different feelings about this game: You like it very very much or you really hate it. I like it very much, but I can imagine there are a lot of people who don't. The reason why there are so many people who dislike it is the extreme difficulty of the game. One bullet is enough to kill you and one grenade can be enough to kill your whole squad. The multiplayer possibilities are also fantastic and exciting. With this game, you are really close to war and I guarantee you don't want to come closer!
Rating: Summary: Good game, bad support Review: This game is very nice. Quite fun. Not enough missions in the campaign. I dont know how cool the multiplayer support is yet though because I cant get any of the upgrades to install. Every time I try to run the upgrades it asks for the cd, yet the cd is in the drive. Oddly the game itself works just fine, you'd think they could write an upgrade that can check the cd-rom drive too. Anyway, beware the upgrades might not work for you.. I'd write to their support to see what the statistics are on this sort of problem.
Rating: Summary: Best war sim since... well, a long time ago Review: Operation: Flashpoint is a game like no other. Never in my long life as a gamer have I had an experience like I have had with this game. THe immersion is amazing. Open expances of the three massive islands, combined with incredible individual story lines makes this the most memorable and satisfying game I have ever played. No joke there. Ghost Recon got a 5/5 for gameplay mechanics, realism, replay, and the breathtakining visuals. This gets a 5/5 for story, gameplay, variety, immersion, replay, and the most accurate depiction of men at war since, well I cant even think of something to compare to this. The flaws are very minor, such as being able to kill with an mp5 from any distance, and the occasionalterrain glitch while flying by in an Abrams, but for what you get, you cannot even notice these little errors. The story is wonderful. No FMV, instead, just live in-game cutscenes move the story along, and boy does it move. As you follow the character's transitions from a green GI ready to go home, a specialist demolitions and recon expert (not sure if they called him a SEAL or not), or a helicopter or plane pilot making dropoffs and search and destroy missions, everyone is unique, and you can see the development they go through as you control them. I grew attached as playing as Lt. Armstrong, the 'main' character in the game, and by far the most fun to play as. The vehicle and covert missions are quite enjoyable too, but none match the tenseness and heart pounding battles that you will face as Lt. Armstrong. There are other very fun games out there, and Im not bashing them at all because Ghost Recon or the Rainbow 6 series are a couple of my favorite real-time wargames ever made. But this, this is in a catagory all to itself, and it gets my absolute highest recommendation.
Rating: Summary: War is not fun. Review: Several reviews on this site and on a couple game review sites led me to believe this game was fun. It is not. The creators do an excellent job of simulating real war. You as one soldier have only a very small impact on the results of each scenario in the campaign. Most firefights are at the range at which, even "zoomed in", you can't really see your opponent, so much as the flash from his gun. You can't aim your gun with accurate crosshairs as in ALL other computer shooters. Instead you get a vague bar that gives you a basic idea where your bullets might land. There's a lot of down time between battles. A lot. And you MUST sit through every excruciating second of it. Usually, when you get hit, you have no idea where the bullet came from, and, of course, you are dead. And, finally, you only get two chances. You can save each multi-battle scenario in the campaign ONCE. Don't squander it, or you'll have to ride in the truck for 5 minutes again. All of these factors serve to make the game a very realistic rendition of real war. And they also make it a miserable, bewildering, and boring experience. Gameplay issues aside, the so-called "Codemasters" are no such thing; there are many bugs that have entirely halted my progress through the game. It's going in the stack of old, sorry games I will never play again. And don't be fooled by the demo; amazingly enough, it is NOT representative of the actual gameplay.
Rating: Summary: Best Wide-Scale Combat Sim Review: I have always enjoyed playing Rogue Spear, and other close quarter battle sims. I also enjoyed playing the command sims(Close Combat). In Flashpoint, it is like the two were merged together. It is like Close Combat, in the sense that you have the ability to move entire platoons and command vehicles. It is like Rogue Spear(not quite as good),you can fight man to man. It accels in the command mode. The interface may seem overwhelming at first, but once you learn it, you will love it. Flashpoint gives you the ability to give very specific commands, like ordering your men to shoot just one person, or go to an exact point. With Rogue Spear you don't have the ability to give specific commands. The only major area that Flashpoint lacks in is Close-Quarters-Combat. You can only enter certain buildings and your weapons are not geared for CQC. Overall Flashpoint is a good game if you enjoy the Close Combat style gaming.
Rating: Summary: Operation Flashpoint delivers the goods! Review: Operation Flashpoint is by far the best and most realistic combat sim out there. It is more realistic than Ghost Recon or any of its predicessors but does lack one thing that those games have...exceptional graphics. Operation Flashpoint lacks alot in the graphics area as well as in gameplay speed due to the small install. However, I believe it is worth buying and you really do feel as if you are a marine in action. Just can't wait for Operation Flashpoint 2.
Rating: Summary: The best overall first person combat simulation yet Review: I've been playing this game for 3 months now and it keeps getting better thanks to the AWESOME mission editor. This is the most non-linear game out there. Simply awesome with limitless potential for any type of combat operation. I think why some people may initially get turned off by this game is because it is HARD!!! This is not a doom, duke-nukem, max payne, linear game that you can blow through for quick thrills, level after monotonous level. You have to spend some serious time thinking about combat tactics, routes of movement, etc. I am an ex US army infantry officer and from my experience, this game exceeds anything I have seen so far. The helicopters are awesome to fly once you play with them for a little while. The tanks are the only thing in the game I think they could have done a little better job on as far as targeting. I personally have no problems with the online play - if the host isn't there to start the game, that's the HOST's problem, not the game!!! I like to play OFP to get the squad level view of things and then Combat Mission for company and larger size operations. These games are getting good! Can't wait to see a WWII or Vietnam timeframe with the OFP game engine. OstFront6
