Summary: Very good FPS game
Review: I just finished going through the game for the first time, and I have to say I was totally impressed. Everything I'd read about it is true. Anyone who buys this game is sure getting a lot for their money, even without a multi-player mode.

I'd like to make a couple points. First of all, the only really bad things I have to talk about are the long load times. I can understand them because there's so much audio and visual detail in the game, but it does get frustrating when a level reloads as you're turning around in a hallway.

Second, I've played one of the Star Trek Voyager FPS games, and my experience from that game taught me that I should download a game guide to get through Undying. I didn't use the cheat codes but the game is so complex that it made things much easier. You can defintely get lost or choose the wrong weapon or spell when you're being chased by something that's trying to kill you. If you think using a guide is cheating, you can always use a higher difficulty level. Remember, the guide says what you should do, but you still have to do it. That isn't always easy because you don't have much time to kill the bosses before they come after you again.

Also, the guides aren't always completely clear, so there is a good deal of improvising. They say where all of the ammunition, spells, and health packs are, but it sometimes isn't possible to get or use them.

In short, I'd recommend this game to anyone who is a fan of the genre, but be prepared for blood. Seeing you're footprints in blood after you kill something is an especially nice touch.

Summary: Best Game No One Played in 2001, plus other awards!
Review: Gamespot recently gave Clive Barker's Undying three Special Achievement Awards for the 2001 gaming year: Best Artistic Graphics, Best Sound, and Best Game No One Played. This game is truly an under-appreciated work of atmospheric creepiness, and it's a damn shame that it didn't sell very well.

When I played Undying in Feb 2001 (when it was released) I thought to myself that I hadn't been as terrified and jumpy since I began gaming with Thief: The Dark Project in 1999. The monsters are very ferocious from the start, especially the athletic Howlers that can leap like Carl Lewis before slashing you, bloodying your vision, throwing your perspective VIOLENTLY askew, and basically tossing you around like a bloody ragdoll in close quarter combat. What's more, you often hear the sounds of Howlers around corners, off in the distance, coming from the roof of a monastery, etc., filling you with a bone-chilling sense of dread. I had to wear a sweater when playing this game for the first time, I was getting the chills so much, I kid you not! Fans of RPG elements will appreciate the spell system that allows you to amplify whatever spells you prefer, as well as the constant improvement of your character (Patrick Galloway) as you find new spell scrolls. There are offensive spells such as Ectoplasm, Skull Storm, and Lightning. "Shield" is a defensive spell for fans of armor, and the game also features Invoke (a spell that resurrects fallen monsters who will fight on your side, my favorite), Haste (for extra speed to flee from the Howlers and other horrors), and the ever-useful Scrye (for extra-sensory perception as well as the innumerable dark corridors and corners.) In addition, Undying features an absolutely beautiful level in which you time-travel into the past to a monastery in winter. Gold-robed monks beside campfires under a night sky with snow falling around you as you seek a magical melee weapon.

I won't say that Undying is a perfect game, and the linearity and frequent load screens are obvious flaws, but I can think of no other game that so successfully combines the frenetic action of Half Life with the immersive terror of Thief. At this late date, Undying should be a bargain, so fans of dread and fear should not let this one slip away!

Summary: Barker Succeeds With First Game
Review: Despite some of the shortcomings in the combat and difficulty balance, Undying is a classic video game that succeeds in immersing a player into a classic horror movie.

The story takes place during the 1920's in Ireland, where a debt is owed, and a family estate with a history of black magic practice wields the ghosts of a bitter sibling rivalry.

It's a viable story involving likeable, interesting characters, and pulls-off some of the scariest moments in the history of video games.

The Howlers come out of nowhere and their blows are felt as your screen develops a red glaze and your vision becomes disoriented for a moment after each hit.

Your weapon of choice is in your left hand and spells are cast in your right, which is odd at first but becomes comfortable enough. The interface is different, but well done and intuitive. You can also level-up your spell of choice, giving Undying a minor RPG touch.

The Unreal engine for the most part looks great and the it's the actual artwork of the designers that makes the graphics so impressive and immersive rather than the Unreal engine's capabilities alone. At times the sky textures are very ugly and "Doom-like" for such a new game. But the great character models, foreground textures and over-all level design make up for it big time. Make no mistake Undying is an impressive game visually, you won't be disappointed in that area.

The latter levels are a bit out of place but are fun regardless, and the boss battles involve patterns, that take a few times to get down, but are generally enjoyable as well.

The gameplay does have a bit of variety, requiring you to find someone or blow something up, or find an object, which takes some exploring and logical thought, making it more than just your typical FPS.

Finally Undying scared [...] me at times, the Howlers stuck with in my dreams at night while I played this game, and you know a game's done it's job when that happens.

The only complaint I have is that the game's difficulty settings are too far apart, but playing on Normal is a good way to go through the first time, it still can be challenging in various areas.

Summary: The best game i'll never play again.
Review: The whole time i was playing this, i was thinking "this could have been sooooo awesome".

and it is awesome... to watch. but when it comes to playing this, you get the sense that fighting the legions of hell in real life would be much less complicated than finding your way around this mess. the controls are pointlessly difficult. for all of your items (ammo, health, weaponry, tools) you have to search through a long list to find what you needed 5 seconds ago. all this while you're being bombarded by 8 monsters that just dropped down from the ceiling, or came out of the floor.
it would have been much easier to assign a key for each item.

the second, and probably most annoying thing about this game, is that almost every other door you walk through causes the game to load another "level". when you walk through these doors is when the game saves, and most of the time you can't go back. so, if you missed something out there, too bad. this is especially annoying when the Load screen starts at a seemingly arbitrary place.. an invisible barrier.. so that as you're exploring this new "room".. you're bound to step over the line again and have to wait on the Load screen, before stepping back over the line to get where you were trying to go in the first place.. (which, you guessed it.. causes another "loading" screen)

all this is tolerable at first. but the WHOLE GAME is like this.

It could have been the best game i've ever played, but all i can say now is "what were they THINKING?"

so, here's what i say.
buy it if its cheap. otherwise, buy Max Payne. it may not be as visually exciting, but its a heck of a lot more user friendly.. and its FUN!

Summary: Fun game, with some flaws
Review: Scary as hell. Absolutely a blast, the first time through. I haven't been scared this much since System Shock 2. I love the combat system.

I can see why the game tanked, though.

The fact that the game holds your hand to get you from one event to the next is completely lame. Having all the doors mysteriously locked, except for the ones you're supposed to go into, is a kludgy solution at best. A multilinear plot would have worked much better, so the player could explore the house.

The game's way too easy in Normal difficulty (I ended with eighty health packs) and quadruples in difficulty in Nightmare. Wish the game was scaled somewhat better. I can't imagine what Easy is like.

The included book "Jeremiah's Journal" doesn't make sense after you've completed the game. You'll understand when you finish.

Clive Barker: games are not novels. Undying should have been multilinear in design; if I want to tackle Aaron first I should've been able to. In fact, since that jerk pestered me from the start, I figured he'd be the first I fight. Result: confusion.

Good game, but not worth the cash. ...

Summary: Buy this game, it's worth it!
Review: An awesome first person shooter with incredible atmosphere! This game is actually scary- more so than Resident Evil in my opinion. The weapon/spell system is unique and the story is good. The only flaw is the lack of online multiplayer, but the single player game is so long that you won't care. I would recommend this game to everyone. "Buy it now"

And, yes, the game really is THAT scary. I cannot recommend this FPS enough. It is THE overlooked gem of 2001.

Summary: Great game, but too many installation problems
Review: I was given this game by a friend who bought it off the website, and although my computer was new at the time, I was missing several of the "reccomended" components, making the game hard to view and play. It only worked after I brought it to a school's public site computer which has a faster connection, and infinite space and programs. The game is absolutely fabulous: great storylines, graphics and challenging, however, if you are buying this for a friend or child, make sure that person's computer has the necessarry programs to run it.

Summary: Simply the most original FPS so far.
Review: Waiting for this game was a tough thing. When I first heard about the game (with Barker's contribution)I was so excited that counted days before its release. I was also a bit worried about the news that the game would include some rpg elements such as spells etc.How could a fps like this coexist with rpg basics ? But when the great day arrived all my fears gone away. It was more than I expected. Much more.
Undying is a classic fps and will always be remembered as one.
Reasons for that is simple. Firstly it has a great story which builds slowly throughout the game. Clive Barker did a wonderful job by setting the story in pastoral England with a chilling ghost story. The characters, npc's, enemies are very well made and exists along with the story rather nicely. The landscapes and closed places are very well made and graphics are excellent. The green British landscape, old victorian palace, ruins, dungeons and the floating alien landscape with Arabic/Middle eastern architecture etc are all remarkable. The creatures and enemies are also very unlikely. The eastern bandits, various evil creatures and strange beings from another dimension as well as the bosses (even they were all human once) are well designed and placed. The Uncanny atmosphere of the game is another thing. It is guaranteed that If you play it in a dark room at night , sure it will make you feel strange .
Aided by the great music and sound effects (especially the howlings)only a handful of games managed to get closer to undying. The rpg elements are very well balanced and adds to the playbility as well as games atmosphere. You use spells in this game like rpg's . But they are well constructed and most of the time used as lifesavers on difficult parts of the game when your classic weapons ( ye olde shotgun, 6 pack pistol, uncle molotov's favourite drink etc) are outgunned by the tough enemies. But the most interesting weapon is the sniper weapon on which I dont want to talk any further in order to keep it secret until you buy the game . The game has strange twists and turns and the ending is very interesting .But it does not end that easily, you have to sweat a lot since it is not easy and can be seen as a longish game. In sum , undying is an excellent game. It will make the fans of Barker to go and buy a computer after playing it just for a short period of time. Even gamers who dislike fps should give it a try, and lovers of horror genre will be obsessed by it.
Since the ending is suitable , all I can hope is a sequel.

Summary: Fun if you turn off the sound, textures, and music
Review: AHHH! This game is fun, but I had trouble having fun when the whole time I was shaking with fear. All the enviroments are spooky and when a monster pops out at you, I doubt you won't scream. Doors open and close by themselves sometimes. The sound of the monster wherever it is, behind you, in front of you, above you, will REALLY make you scared. The gameplay is great with good AI. (some types of monsters are stupid while others will sneak up on you or hunt you down) It's the kind of game that grabs you and shakes you real hard, then slams you down onto your chair. Sooooo, If you like horror games or fps, this is the game for you.
