Review: I'm glad the folks that made this game are full of originality, because I can't fathom creating something as unique and excellent as Undying. I echo all the reviews on this game (gamespot.com, gamespy.com, gamepower.com) and share in their enthusiasm on the Undying experience!There's no such thing as a perfect game, but Clive Barker's Undying is the single most rewarding PC game I've played since Half Life. While solid games like Dues Ex, No One Lives Forever, and Sacrifice made strong statements in gaming convention, not one of them left me feeling quite as rewarded (or scared) as Undying. From the minute I cracked the box open, I felt like I was being pulled into another world. Casual and hardcore players alike will love what they see, even when it scares them more than any game ever! I highly recommend picking up this game.
Rating: Summary: The wait for the pre-order was well worth it!!! Review: UNDYING is probably the most revolutionary 3D FPS since Half Life! When I first heard about it (from American McGee's Alice), I *knew* I had to pre-order this game. Being a big fan of macabre horror [Clive Barker], I knew I would enjoy it. But when I received it on my doorstep I slapped the CD in and began my journey into brialliantly designed 3D enviornments with atmospheric marvels and blood-chilling special effects! Faaaaar from the typical FPS, this one actually has a story that makes you want to play it for hours on end. Many FPSs loose their luster when you wander through the same-looking levels shooting the same, old unchallenging enemies -- Not Undying! Using the power of the Unreal Engine -- the Undying team took "3D worlds" to all new heights, using textures and geometry that cannot be described by anything short of 'beautiful'. Standing in Jeremiah's grand manor hall, looking at the ornate carvings in the wood, the flowing tapestries, and the lightning flashing in through the windows and billowing curtains....EXCELLENT! Another thing that really caught my attention was the sound. The sound effects used in UNDYING are 2nd to none! With a good sound system, you are thrown right in the middle of a freightening horror movie, battling Jeremiah's undead siblings -- each with their own creppy personality. Ghost and demons, occult magic and 19th century weapons, amazing storyline and thrilling paranormal encounters that will keep you up for nights at a time! Buy it and buy it now!
Rating: Summary: Possibly the scariest game out there. Review: I am a big fan of the horror genre which includes movies, novels and the very few true horror video games. And no I am not talking about thrasher run around horror movies, I am talking about the true horror that keeps you on the edge of your seat and actually leaves you dreading to go to bed at night. So after finishing Clive Barker's the Undying I have to say I was very impressed. First of all the graphics were amazing for when the game came out. The sound effects along with the music added to the creepiness of the game which gave it an overall very creepy atmoshpere. Top that off with an amazing story with some awesome plot twists and you have an award winning game. I have beat the game about 5 or 6 times now and keep going back for more when the need arises. I don't think that there is any other horror game out there in my opinion that compares to this. I would truly like to see more horror computer games made in conjunction with Clive Barker. Surely that is a winning combination. Lets just hope that the Call of Cthulhu game coming out is worth the wait.
Rating: Summary: One of the scariest games of the new millenum Review: Even if you're not a fan of Clive Barker, this game is still well worth playing. Its got a solid and very scary plot, and manages to avoid most of the survival horror cliches'. You start the game a Patrick Galaway, who is summoned by his old friend Jerimiah to investigate some strange goings on at his island manor.
The levels manage to convey a sense of connectedness without becoming repitious and boring, and there are enought variations in enemies to keep things interesting.
My only complants are
1) It takes a while to load levels (even from quickloads)
2) The last couple of bosses are repetitive, and drag the game down at the end.
Rating: Summary: Best bang for your buck. Review: What a great surprise! This game managed to totally slip under the radar of most gaming retail outlets. It doesn't cost $50+, you don't need a $250 video card to play it, and the story is well developed thanks to the imagination of Clive Barker.
It's an FPS-based game but the story and the atmosphere really serve well to support the structure of the game. Too often FPS games are shoot-em-ups for the sake of shoot-em-ups (Painkiller for one). Definitely one of the creepiest games I've played. Much more so than Doom III which prefers to go for the cheap shock ans surprise over tension building and a macabre sense of ruinous decadence.
The levels are well developed and there's lots of variety, from haunted houses to prehistoric villages to romanesque monasteries. Sure, the graphincs are old-school by 2004 standards but you forget this fact quickly once you immerse yourself.
I have to say it was one of the best games I've played all year, and at $10 for a used copy, how you gonna beat that? Before you shell out $50 for Doom or HL-2, donwload the demo and play it for yourself, I'm confident you'll be pleasantly surprised too.
Rating: Summary: Great game Review: It is maddening that this game was such a commercial disappointment for Clive. It really is one of the best FPS games that`s ever been put together. The detail is stunning. When you kill someone (or someTHING) it falls dead on the floor and a huge puddle of blood floods out of its carcass underneath. When you walk over the corpse and through the puddle of blood you can hear your feet splashing in the puddle. Then as you are walking away, if you turn around, you can actually see a trail of bloody footprints behind you. Your own. That is just one example of the many wonderfully gruesome details that the designers of this game stuck in there. Leave it to Clive Barker to pay attention to the little nuances. The scythe is my favorite weapon. And there are numerous ways for it to kill your enemies. Almost every weapon has an alternate attack. I found this out by accident. On the scythe you can either use it to just slash enemies to ribbons, or you can cut their heads off with it and then slurp the blood up off the blade, which will replenish a few points of your life.
The graphics are pristine, and the sound has depth. As something charges up from behind you, you can actually hear it getting closer and closer as it's feet clip clop on the floor, and its animal-like howls get louder and louder. The story is captivating too. The amazon.com review said that it is a little bit convoluted, and maybe their right, but if you play the game a second time after you've beaten it, it all makes perfect sense. Just as good as any of Clive's early horror novels. The characters in this game are deep and fascinating. Just like watching a film. The ending left me a little confused, though. Obviously they were planning to put out a sequel, but that probably won't happen since the game was kind of a flop. It's just a crying shame. Buy the game, though. Play with the lights off, in the middle of the night, and when you are all alone, and you are guaranteed hours and hours of horrific enjoyment.
Rating: Summary: Movie-Like Single Player Game Review: Although this game is pretty old by now, and although I have had it for a long time, I just wanted to add my review here to pay my respect for the developers, because this game has been under-rated by customers. Perhaps because of its rating. Nevertheless, this is a wonderful game with a very very nice story, excellent characters, really pretty graphics for its time, SUPERB sound effects, and a chilling soundtrack that all comes together magically to give the player an unforgettable horror-movie like FPS experience.
I remember the times I used to play this game at home with all the lights turned off. And seriously, there were many times I jumped with horror, or times I couldn't take the fear of waiting to be killed in the dark or fear of being attacked, and shut down my PC.
The weapons, spells, enemies, enemy AI, dialogue, script, plot, whatever you need in a great FPS, this game has it.
At this price range today, if you like the genre, this is a MUST BUY.
Rating: Summary: How did I miss this one!! Review: Wow! How did I miss this game when it came out? I purchased it on a whim recently and found one of the best realized, most entertaining and scariest shooters I've ever played. The idea of placing it in 1920's Ireland is brilliant. It oozes with atmosphere, and the time period combines the best of both the 19th and early 20th centuries (i.e. 19th century atmosphere with somewhat modern 20th century weapons -- at least the ones that aren't magical). The music, graphics, pacing, lighting, level design and "enemies" (both human and other) are right on. There is even an incredibly well realized magical city to visit and eventually subdue. This is one of the few games that has really scared me (the old adrenaline was really pumping). The most disappointing aspect is the ending (bad enough to warrant the loss of a star). The final "boss" or monster is so ridiculous it seems like almost an afterthought to the high quality shown in the rest of the game. Purchase it -- especially now when it's such an incredible value!
