Summary: From a DoD vet.
Review: First of all, this game is in no way related to CS, so all comparisons between the two should stop. It wasn't made "by the makers of CS and Half-Life", although the latest version does seem to have been created to suit the tastes of the CS community.

I think this is the best WW2 game on the market if you're looking for a realistic squad-based game. The scenarios are mostly in cities ravaged by war, with rubble and destroyed tanks littering the streets. The newer maps feel like small deathmatch arenas made in cities with doors chained shut instead of simulations of real battles, which have taken the place of large, diverse environments.

The maps are objective-based. There are two or three types of maps, which are area control, objective capture, and assault. Area control maps have multiple flags situated evenly throughout the map, with the two sides pushing each other back and capturing more flags as they move along, eventually controling the whole map and ending the round (Kalt, Caen, Donner). Objective maps have one or more objectives for each side to complete, such as destroying tanks or capturing documents (Jagd, Vicenza). Assault maps could be either of the other two, but with one side defending while the other side tries to outflank the defenders (Glider, Zalec, beach maps).

The soldier and weapon dynamics are much more realistic than those of DoD's counterparts, MOH and BF1942. Rocket launchers require shouldering, sniper rifles have sway, and if you sprint or jump around too much, you will lose stamina and be a sitting duck.

The game has gone through multiple beta stages where thousands of people contributed to the DoD community and helped the mod developers perfect the game.

Although now the dev. team is basically under control of Valve and Activision and has somewhat receeded from the amazing game it was in the beta stages, it's still being frequently updated to suit the needs of the growing community.

Summary: I've played all the big ones, but I keep coming BACK to DOD
Review: First off, let me begin with a little history. I downloaded the first beta version of Day of Defeat ages ago. It was a Half-Life mod dream come true. It was a truly exciting and addicting first-person shooter for WWII, and nice alternative to Counter-Strike. The voice communication addition was an incredible bonus. The Ally rifle "PING" when the clip empties and pops out was a sheer thrill. Great stuff. Then came Medal of Honor. After experiencing a more realistic feel for walking/running it was difficult to turn back, and so I left Day of Defeat behind. But with Medal of Honor, you couldn't prone (lay down)! Bad mistake, particularly for snipers. All in all, better graphic improvement and a lot of fun. Then came Battlefield 1942. I was in heaven. Every possible scenario in combat from boats to planes, tanks and jeeps, etc. The overall graphics of MOA were better, but the variety and fun was increased with Battlefield. After playing Battlefield 1942 for almost a year... now I come BACK to Day of Defeat.

Why? The other games certainly had their advantages and improvements in versatility and graphics/maps... but something about the 'rawness' and realism of Day of Defeat puts me in what feels like more real combat. The sounds I think are the best compared to the other games, and the KILL factor is much more realistic (no taking several rifle or machine gun hits and watching your health bar go down bit by bit) - when you get shot, you're DOWN! No spewing blood, no flailing arms or shouting, your body just goes limp and you collapse. The helmet 'ping' on the head shots are nice too. The grenades (though in earlier versions the explosions were massive and I miss that) still give off a better kick and are more lethal than either of the previously mentioned games - great shake and boom, followed by a cloud of smoke and debris. Not just a little 'pop' - oopps, I missed him kind of thing.

Day of defeat has more instant action in tighter quarters. Choose from a variety of weapons and use TEAMWORK to accomplish objectives. Teamwork is essential, as is the perfect combination of MG's, snipers, riflemen, etc. Since many maps have tight alley ways & corners, you need to communicate a good plan for either providing cover fire using a rapid-fire machine gun on a tripod to secure an area, or to climb to a 3rd story building to snipe the approaching enemy for example. That's why the VOICE communication is so important. Certainly you can type messages also. Concerned that this game is only for internet play? Worry not, there are many 'bot' programs out there on the net to leave you with some fun & challenge even when you have no connection or your cable is out (look for "Sturmbot", that's the best and 'official' one for DOD). I'll admit the gaming community has dropped significantly in numbers since the early days, but I still always have a decent amount of servers to choose from with great pings.

Even though I could download the game, I went & bought the retail for several reasons.

1) Support the cause - this game still stands strong!
2) I format my computer frequently and am sick of having to first install the never-played Half-Life, then the update patches, then Day of Defeat, etc., etc.
3) Nice manual, CD & box art (I'm strange that way & like the whole 'package').
4) It's the most current version, released in 2003, and even installs what you need for any other Valve mod you'd like to play, so you don't need Half-Life anymore.

If you want great, fast-paced infantry combat action that puts you RIGHT in the environment with incredible sounds and weaponry, choose Day of Defeat. In fact, with the sounds of planes roaring in the skies and occasional artillery booming around, you still feel like everything else expected in combat is happening, we're just focusing on the infantry part here. The previously mentioned games are also great, but if you like WWII action games as much as I do, you'll try them all and should NOT pass this one up! I'll see you on line!

Summary: One of the best online game experiences
Review: From the start DOD encourages team based play. Yes, it uses the old half life engine, which isn't that bad, come on!! but enables players with older PC's to run it at higher resolutions so enabling easier targeting of enemies. While the scenery may be graphically dated, the actual game physics are spot on. The sound of bullets whizzing past, hitting different surfaces and the tracer fire eminating from some distant location is completely mesmerising. Seeing your team mates being struck down by enemy gunfire, their helmets spinning off and their bodies slowly falling into a crumpled heap is a sight to behold.
What DOD delivers is solid, team based, gameplay that anyone with a broadband connection can easily enjoy. The maps aren't big but this keeps the fighting tight and tense. I've played Battlefield 1942, yeah, visually, it's great but there is a real sense of being lost in some vast battlefield with bullets hitting you from nowhere. In DOD, there are so many occasions when you and your team mates are stuck in a corner with grenades and machine gun fire forcing you back. One of you has to make a decision and the result can either be an immense failure where all of you are massacred in a whirlwind of blood and bullets or sublime victory where you all charge the enemy and they flee before your onslaught. Again, I will repeat, DOD really makes players work as a team, more than any other online game I have played. Medal of Honour for example, a fine game, still has the stupid Quake 3 idiots running around shooting all and sundry. It has 'Free for all' maps for goodness sake! These just encourage pointless 'shoot to score' mentality and I feel is holding the online gaming scene back.
Ignore the Counter Strike cynics, Valve know what they are doing and DOD delivers big time!

Summary: Gets boring after so many hours
Review: Graphics are good, but over all, I enjoy Battlefield far better than this when it comes to WWII game. Unlike Battlefield, all you do is just shoot guns and shoot guns and shoot guns. That's it. There isn't much of tactics other than just get flags. No airplanes, tanks, ships, nothing. In Battlefield, you can ride so many different type of vehicles, anti-aircraft guns, stationally guns, get on different types of airplans, ships.. so much more than just shooting guns. Medal of Honor is similar to this, but again, Medal of Honor is far better. Medal of Honor has missions to complete. All you do on this game is just shoot each other and get flags.....that's it. You can just keep running until you find somebody who does not have name tag showing up as "friendly". When you throw a grenade, you can see on map, so not much of tactics for that.

If you enjoy just shooting guns w/o much of tactics, this is the one for you. If you want more challenge, get some other games

Summary: Addicting, Fun, cant stop playing
Review: i downloaded Day of Defeat 1.0 today, and i must say that it is a great addition to the Halflife Family. I have played this game since the original mod came out 2 years ago, but this is the best by far. The graphics are astonishing, the gameplay is exciting, and the action will make your adrenaline rush.

This game takes place during world war 2, and you can choose to play as either a German, American, or British. Use all of the famous weapons used in world war 2, including the Kar 98, the Enfeild, and the tompsohn sub machine gun. This game is online only, but the game never ceases to amaze me. if you already have halflife or Counterstrike, you can ...purchase this game right here on amazon.com. If you like Battlefield 1942, but tired of the flying and the slow gameplay, i recomend this game.

P.S. i reccomend you have a cable modem for this game to improve game speed.

Summary: Has held its own for over 2 years
Review: I figured I had to throw my 2cents in..I've played DOD for over 2 years, and have devoted timeout just to drive to my bros and play. I've played SOF, BlackhawkDown, CS, and BF1942. Nothing compares to DOD. True, BF42 lets you drive a tank and a plane. If you wanna play Rambo, then buy BF42. If you wanna be a real soldier, crawling on your belly and calling for backup (through your mic, of course) then buy DOD. I've just built a new computer strictly to play DOD with, even though an old pc would work just fine. Low-lag, free servers, and a cool community for "noobies". If you wanna learn more before purchase, check out the dayofdefeatmod website. Listen to the guys talk about "Tactics", and you'll see just how fun this game is. Nothing reminds me of my old Army days like DOD. See you all on the servers!--Hawkeye

Summary: Great Game
Review: I have been playing DoD since 1.2, it was an awesome game then, and still is, I considered 3.1 as one of the best DoD versions ever, but when 1.0 came out I was a bit dissapointed, but it quickly grew on me and after about 30 mins of play I was hooked on it. Truly a great game

Summary: best WWII game ever made
Review: I have been playing this game for 3 years and i am still hooked. sure the graphics arn't as good as newer games but they serve their purpose. If graphics are all you care about then by all means skip this game and miss out on one if not the best experiance i have ever had in gaming. The level design and character classes are amazingly acuarate in it is just flat out a blast to play. anyone who compares this game to counter strike is frankly retarted. This game differes from CS in an uncountable number of ways. This is in no way another CS. it is its own game and one thats 100X better than counter strike. BUY THIS GAME

Summary: Realism Emulation
Review: I have most World War 2 PC games, and I've had Day of Defeat for about a year. Each update to it made it slightly better, and im glad to see it go retail and recieve the attention it deserves.

The thing I like about it most and what is the most impressing about DoD, as opposed to a game such as Battlefield 1942 or Medal of Honor, is Valve's perspective on the atmosphere of these World War 2 battles and scenarios. The game achieves realism more than any other, and the sound effects, visuals and overall feeling are possibly the best for World War 2.

With the new DoD, there is now a map to look at, which will help since I tend to get lost in most of its levels. There are alot more weapons, and the restoration of each different player class being assigned to a general task (For ex. the demolition man may have to blast a hole in a wall in order to create an alternate route to enemy headquarters).

Voice communication is also optional in DoD, so you can talk to other plays on your team via a microphone, about team strategy or just to chat. Besides Counter-Strike, Day of Defeat is the most sucessful Half-Life MOD, and now retail game, and has drawn the attention of many players. I advise the purchase of DoD if you have any interests in World War 2 or are looking for a solid, modern warfare, First-person shooter.

Summary: ON-LINE ONLY!!!!!!
Review: I HAVE NEVER PURCAHSED A GAME THAT WAS LIMITED TO ON-LINE GAME PLAY. THIS REALLY HITS A LOW. SURE, I REALIZE THAT MANY PEOPLE HAVE THE CAPABILITY TO PLAY THESE GAMES BUT I AM NOT ONE OF THEM. WHY EVEN MAKE A GAME LIMITED TO MULTIPLAYER?
ATTENTION BUYERS: PLEASE READ THE FINE PRINT! DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON GAMES YOU WON'T PLAY! I HAVE SPENT ALOT OF MONEY ON GAMES ONLY TO FIND OUT THEY ARE NOT WHAT IS REPRESENTED BY THE MANUFACTURER.
*SHOULD HAVE READ THE FINE PRINT.
