Summary: Absolutely addicting game !!!!
Review: At 35 years old, I've played a lot of strategy, first person shooters, PS2 sports games, etc... and I've never found a game as addicting and immersive as Day of Defeat. For those of you who love WWII and video games, you must buy this. I would highly recommend Cable or DSL connection as well as a reasonably powerful pc and set of headsets. And you'll want to download the latest interface patch called STEAM, which greatly enhances the graphics, convenience, and stability of the game. And Day of Defeat offers the best squad level battles out there, bar none. Better than Call of Duty, Medal of Honor, and Battlefield 1942. The maps are much smaller and managable than in Battlefield 1942 and because of this, the battles are much more focused and intense. You will need to work with your team to capture objectives and this is why the game is so much fun. Do buy this game!!!

Summary: Beta 1.3 is good. 1.0 should be better
Review: Beta 1.3 is fairly fun already. With the addition of The Brits and the Bazookas it schould be better. Of course you can just dowload it if you already have HL. I reccommend doing that. If you dont have HL this is a good way to get a great game as well as all the mods for HL(downloadable incl; Counter-Strike, Natural Selection, Firearms, TFC)

Summary: Great visually, excellent playing
Review: Day of Defeat follows in the footsteps of Counter-Strike, as a uber-excellent mod of Half-Life that has been released as a stand-alone retail product.

Day of Defeat can be played on virtually all computers purchased within the past five years. However, it looks and plays totally modern. It's WW2 based environments are filled with gritty realism. The settings seems realistic, and the weapons are realistic - as realistic as a computer game can get.

The movement and gameplay is well-flowing and uncomplicated. As such, it is easy to immerse yourself into the feeling of fighting a battle, rather than fighting with your computer for which button to press.

The game has a voice-comm system which enables players to verbally talk with their teammates, so plotting our strategies and tactics in real-time adds to the teamplay aspect. Day of Defeat is an online, multiplayer game - so be ready to fight against people, not a computer program. Therefore, there is an exciting psychological aspect - you really need to play smart to outsmart the humans you're competing with. It is endlessly creative because of this human aspect.

There are 14 different "real WW2 battles" at which you can be an infantryman, submachinegunner, sniper, heavy rifle, machinegun or bazoka operator. You can choose to play as an American, British or German soldier.

If you don't have Half-Life and therefore can't grab Day of Defeat off the internet, it is well worth purchasing. You will be able to add custom models and maps as the game's players create them.

Even before DoD was retail, it was the most popular WW2 based game on the internet. The reason being it is a great game. Lots of action. Lots of teamplay. Lots of fun.

Summary: DoD Rocks!!
Review: Day of Defeat is a great multiplayer game. For pure, multiplayer infantry combat action it is light years ahead of Battlefield 1942, a game it is often compared to. The development team has always shown great attention to detail regarding player models, weapons, maps and general ambience. The detailed graphics and sound effects make you feel immersed in the action, as if bullets are really flying by your head. I have been playing this game for over two years now (it began as a downloadable Half-Life mod) and I am still heavily addicted to it. The game has evolved quite a bit in that time, with new additions keeping it fresh and allowing it to remain the most fun PC game I have ever played. Given its track record, there is an extensive community already established for new players to become a part of. There are tons of opportunities for league and clan play, tournaments, and online forums and resources. You should definitely buy this game!!

Summary: One of the Best Online WW2 Games Out There
Review: Day of Defeat is an online World War 2 game(based on the Half-life engine) set in the year 1944. It is solely European Theater(US/Britain vs. Germany).

When you pick your team you also get to pick different classes. For example German Grenadiers use Kar98 rifles & grenades and Allied Sergeants use Thompson submachine guns and m1a1 greasegun.

The action in DoD is VERY intense. A large part is due to the sound of the game. Day of Defeat has the BEST sound over any world war 2 game. You will actually feel like your in a War and not some deathmatch game. Just play the map dod_charlie and you will see what Im talking about.

The graphics are great if your on a high powered gaming rig(like me). Very smooth(60+fps).

Also this is one of the best team games out there, where you will actually have to rely on teamates to win the match, not just yourself. Also teamplay is boosted by the support of in-game voice communication(microphone needed), something more online shooters should have these days.

Overall Great WW2 game. You cant call yourself a WW2 first person shooter fan without this game.

Summary: Saving Private Ryan? I think not!
Review: Day of Defeat is basically counter-strike with an attempted WWII setting. It does not, nor will it ever feel like Saving Private Ryan, and whoever told you that this was an epic WWII game needs to get their head examined. While not a bad idea in itself, the game fails to convey the meaning of war. It is simply a pretty display of new textures and skins, and a lame attempt at character classes a la Return to Castle Wolfenstein. In the end, it is a mediocre spinoff that screams counter-strike. The levels feel cramped and it feels like you're playing laser-tag in a room rather than fighting a war out on the fields of battle. There are few maps and even fewer players actually playing the game. The Omaha level is a nice try (for the millionth time), but still no cigar. Consult Medal of Honor or Battlefield 1942 on how to get this level right. The game is multiplayer ONLY and requires a somewhat fast connection (cable is preferred). As far as system specifications go, it's the outdated half-life engine with new textures and you should be able to run it with the old system that's collecting dust in the attic. Purchase at your own risk or download for free if you have half-life or retail version of counter-strike. But if you really must have a WWII game with freedom of movement, so you don't feel like a rat in a maze...skip this title and get Battlefield 1942 instead.

Summary: Day of Defeat = Best WWII Multiplayer Game
Review: Day of Defeat is by far one of the most realistic war games (Rougue Spear is close as well) I have ever played. You should ignore any review that compares this to Counter-Strike, especially on the basis of realism because these two games are COMPLETELY different. Counter-Strike's "realism" consists of snipers running around and jumping while looking through scopes and firing accurately. Also accurately firing AK-47s from the hip on full automatic mode while running around. Counter-Strike, realistic? HARDLY. In Counter-Strike, kills = victory. Sure, there are objectives that are usually ignored because players want to improve their stats instead of complete objectives. This isn't an attack on CS, but I need to say this to separate the two mods.

Sure, CS can be fun and all but it's usually just a round based deathmatch. Day of Defeat is completely different. In DOD, kills don't mean anything if you don't complete the objective because killing isn't the objective. The pathetic excuse for realism CS boasts is far surpassed by DOD. Sure, you can run around firing full automatic, but you your chances of hitting anything you'd want to hit are slim. In reality, accuracy comes from firing while standing still. Snipers aren't ridiculously powerful in DOD as AWP fanatics are in CS. Each class has a niche on the battlefield, and while snipers are quite dangerous at a distance, a rifleman or a soldier equipped with a submachine gun can easily butcher any snipers within range. I'm also pleased by the fact you can be a rifleman without being at a huge disadvantage like you would be in Battlefield 1942 or Medal of Honor. And rocket launchers are not ridiculous like Medal of Honor. Unlike Medal of Honor, they actually serve a purpose and aren't as cheap. You can't wander the map blowing people away while on the move. No, you have to shoulder the launcher to be able to fire, then your movement speed is greatly reduced. Even when you fire, your blast radius isn't as large.

So comparing CS to DOD is unfair becaue they are two completely different things. If you like realism, you'll most likely like this game.

Summary: Infinitely better than CS, but...
Review: Day of Defeat is very similar to CS. Not in terms of gameplay mechanics, community, and visuals, but in the path they followed.

Anybody playing the game must undoubtedly know that it was originally a mere modification (that's a real understatement) before it went retail. Because of this, it had a smaller community that would allow them to make additions and changes that would otherwise be very risky. Counter-Strike was also originally like this. Sadly, now that anybody can get their hands on it, it has suffered from being turned into something "n00b" friendly. While this is a blessing to any newcomer, it gives DoD some serious hits.

The tension that existed in the "mod" is no longer there. I used to feel that I was an actual soldier in the trenches, but now I feel like I'm just a spectator. I don't recall soldiers having radars that could pick up grenades, rendering the explosives completely useless. I also don't recall them being able to see their teammates names flashing above their heads. Originally, you needed to be careful about who you shot. With the friendly fire almost always on, you needed to ask yourself "Are my teammates in that room? Is that guy in the shadows a friendly? Should I shoot or not?". Now it's just a blind rushing run of shooting anything without a name tag. Also, the ability to pick up any dropped weapon, while more realistic, allows for some pretty cheap tactics such as the ability to mix-and-match your own weapons loadout without any of the inbalances. *Sigh* I do miss DoD being a beta.

But it's not all clouds and rain. Weapons function realistically and the game has so many features that CS should be put to shame and think twice about calling itself a "realistic shooter". The sound effects and the visuals have taken major overhauls since the previous beta and it's simply amazing. I do not joke at all when I say that the game goes head-to-head (and sometimes wins) against games such as Medal of Honor. This is an amazing achievement when you consider that this is all being done on a modified Quake 1 engine.

However, my conclusion is the same as the one I gave for CS. It WAS an excellent mod. It IS NOW a pretty good mod. But in terms of a retail product, it's average. A better idea would be to buy Half-Life and download it along with Counter-Strike and almost any other awesome mod you can find. That way you pay for an excellent SP experience but get an potentially limitless amount of FREE MP games. Also, with Half-Life 2 hitting shelves in September (and the game is looking to be the best ever), you better catch up on the original story so you're as ready as you can be for the second installment.

Summary: DO NOT BUY THIS GAME
Review: First let me explain why I don't want you to buy this game. Day of Defeat is a wonderful gaming experience. The levels are well done and promote teamwork. Its a historically accurate, and fun game. However, it is a MOD for half-life. That means, if you own half life, you can download this game FOR FREE. You can buy Half-Life for 20 bucks, and get this game as well. Sure, it's nice to have a printed manual and box, but the retail version of this game is abhorrent. You will get disconnected for no reason, and I found myself unable to play Counter-Strike (another great mod for half life) at all. Terrible!

The answer is simple. If you want this game (which I would highly recommend at 5 stars), buy half-life and download it for free. you will also get the awesome half life single player game.

and to those who say that the game is dated: yes, it is. however it doesn't look like complete crap, and most computers will be able to run and enjoy it.
