Summary: Half-Life: Blue Shift
Review: Half Life : Blue Shift is a first person shooter, It is the second expansion pack to half life, created by gearbox the same company that did opposing force, Built on the quake2 half life engine. BS supports three video modes Software Rendering, Direct 3D, Open GL (Default and 3dFx mini). BS is a stand alone game meaning that you dont need the orginal half life for installation, Play half life before you play this game or else you would not understand the story and it might spoil you half life gameplay when you play later. Here you play a security gaurd Barney Calhon in the black mesa research center, When you are taking the tram ride to work in the first level of the orginal game half life you could see a security gaurd pounding on the door, That is the charecter you play here. The graphics, sound and charecter details are much better here, There are even reflective surfaces, You could see one when you are in the tram ride, But still the graphics are nowhere by today's standard's. Blue Shift has the same weapons from the orginal game, No really orginal weapons and not all half life weapons either. The Crowbar is here, That's good, It is the best weapon that needs no ammo, But the crossbow is not available, You could get all HL weapons only if you cheat. BLue shift does not have many monstors, No new monstors or tough ones. Another surprise is that BS does not have the big boss climax either, Though it has a good ending, I liked the half life ending, But not many gamers did, All gamers would love the BS ending if only it did not come very soon. Though blue shift is very short with very few weapons, Few monstors and dated graphics, It is a must if you are a Half Life fan.

Summary: Blue Shift is Mind Blowing Fun
Review: The Half-Life series is, without a doubt, the most fun I have ever had with a computer game. The game's sound effects and graphics are incredibly realistic, and make you feel as though you are in the game yourself!! As you round a corner, three aliens rush toward you, and you nearly jump out of your skin. The aliens look so...alien...and they move like they are alive! Blue Shift makes the whole Half-Life experience even better, with new enemies, new friends, and new areas to explore. Best of all, it's even more frightening than the original. An added bonus is the HD pack, which, when installed, upgrades the weapons and characters of all the games in the Half-Life series. If you haven't played any of the Half-Life games before, I recommend trying the original Half-Life first, which won the Game of the Year award in 2000. However, if you are familar with Half-Life, purchase Blue Shift ASAP.

Summary: Could be Better
Review: When I heard there was another addition to Half-Life being released, I knew I had to get it. The original Half-Life is by far the best first-person shooter game I have ever played. Blue Shift was a great new idea, but severly lacked development. The new high definition pack definitly brought new life to the first two episodes of half-life, but as a stand-alone game, it needed more attention to detail and to the length. The game is extreemly short and easy to beat. I give it 3 stars for the effort.

Summary: Blue Shift gives me the Blues
Review: Blue Shift, I knew Half-Life and let me tell you, you are no Half-life!"

Disclaimer. I loved Half-life. So it is reasonable that any game that might be compared to it would fall short. Even acknowledging that fact Blue Shift was an extreme disappointment.

Length: It took me roughly 2 hours to get through Blue Shift- roughly the length of a good demo. Half-life, of course, took weeks of seemingly never ending fun. Opposing Forces, although not as exciting as Half-life, was very respectable in length.

Innovativeness: There are no new weapons. There are no new opponents. Worse, the very few irritating things, which were found in Half-life and Opposing Forces, are EMPHASIZED in Blue Shield. For example, those irritating crabs that periodically would attack from vents in Half-life and Opposing Forces appear around every corner in Blue Shield. Not interesting, only a nuisance which detracts from the game. Remember the great music found in Half-life and Opposing Forces, which would set the mood and accompany significant events and the change of locations. For example when you successfully launched the satellite. Don't look for it in Blue Shield, because it isn't there. Unlike Half-life (and to a lesser extent Opposing forces) I did not find myself saying "Wow, What great detail." or "I can't believe they thought of that." The incredible lack of innovativenessng was notable.

Plot: Same plot as Half-life but from a security guard perspective. I liked the way the plot interconnected with Half-life and Opposing Forces. For example, periodically you might see Freeman or the Administrator. Unfortunately, these connections were very infrequent.

Overall Rating. Poor. Blue Shift has none of the wit of Half-life.

Worth the money? Nope, Sorry, I can't recommend (as much as I want to) its purchase.

Summary: half-life blue shift
Review: i generally liked the game, but it seemed to be much to short. very easy too. not as challenging as opposing force or half-life.

Summary: Yes, I enjoyed it.
Review: Im just done playing BS, quite a challenge. Im very new to the HL game/series. I have an edition without the OF. Otherwise the rest of the the stuff were on the disc. Since Im a very new HL-fan it didnt take that much to impress me. However, I am a bit disappointed that: 1) There was so much playing in the dark. I had to wait for my flahlight to recharge. Not funny and not so good for your eyes either I think. 2) No new monsters or weapons. Too bad. They could at least have added the aliens from OF. Anyway, I liked the HD-pack, and the game had some real hard puzzles. I had to 'cheat' and look on planethalflife's site twice... I did not finish the game that quickly but ok, it was over a bit too fast I think... Anyway Im glad they relased this game, I want more and more and more games in the HL-series...

Summary: Good game, but...
Review: I was disappointed in Blue Shift due to fact it was VERY short. If this was longer, and harder to complete, I would be more content.

Summary: Let down by Blue Shift
Review: I confess I don't follow the world of computer games very closely, so I don't know if this expansion pack was particularly anticipated. I loved the original Half-Life and enjoyed Opposing Force, the first expansion set. I was excited to see a new Half-Life adventure was available.

I was pretty disappointed though, mainly because of the scope of the game. It is quite short. I would guess it is about a third the length of each of the other two. I finished it in just over two days. The scope is also limited in that you get far fewer weapons than in the previous two. There are no energy or alien weapons in particular. Like the previous two games, this one gradually became more difficult as you progressed, but it ended rather abruptly after reaching only perhaps medium difficulty.

Opposing Force had introduced a number of new features: ropes; the ability to make use of other characters, in particular soldiers, since your character was a soldier; new types of alien monsters. I had been a little ambivalent about these features, and their absence in Blue Shift was refreshing. I had enjoyed the original Half-Life more, and I had the feeling that Blue Shift was somehow getting back to the basics. This was a welcome change.

Blue Shift did introduce some innovations of its own, particularly the non-renewable flak jacket and helmet. The presence of certain artifacts from earlier games that were otherwise not connected with Blue Shift (the HEV chargers, e.g.) was an interesting touch that provided continuity. Some of the sound effects were improved (though I could have done with a little less mood music). But these small improvements could not make up for the overall limitations of the game.

Other conspicuous absences: In each of the previous two games, one of the most gratifying segments involved shooting down a helicopter with a rocket launcher. We were deprived of this David and Goliath moment in Blue Shift. There were very few chances to use a big, stationary gun either. And perhaps most disappointing was the absence of a big, climactic final battle against a mammoth enemy that takes time, ammo and smarts to defeat.

There are many worse games out there, I'm sure. If you enjoy FPS games, you'll enjoy Blue Shift. But don't get your hopes up. You'll just be let down.

Summary: Paying the phone bill
Review: Blue Shift is more of the fantastic Half Life series, but not nearly enough. It's over way too quickly -- I repeat, way too quickly -- though what there is is, as usual, super At the end, I had the uneasy feeling that gearbox and VALVe, co-creators of the great Half Life sequel, Opposing Forces, made Blue Shift secondly to satisfy the insatiable appetities of Half Life fans, and firstly to pay their phone bills. Thirty-plus bucks is a lot for so little. My advice: wait till the game goes on sale.

Summary: Uninspired and way too short
Review: As a Half-Life fan, I must say how disappointed I am with Blue Shift. It's far too short (took me about 6 hours), too easy (no hard puzzles to solve), and limited in scope (you don't even see all the monsters or get all the weapons you do with original Half-Life). Is it worth the money? Barely. Even if you look at it as just a 'filler' until HL2, it's still very unsatisfying. If you're an HL fan, go ahead and order, but don't waste your time standing by the mailbox for it to arrive. It's just not worth getting excited about. INSTEAD try Gunman Chronicles (uses the HL engine) and actually drive a tank this time !
