Rating: Summary: The Greatest Multiplayer Shooter Made Review: This game isn't as fun as good-looking, but it's still an incredible ride to play! The graphics are the center stage in this title. If you have a high-performance PC, the graphics are breathtaking! From the scenery to the smallest details, Unreal 2003 looks great! The sound is good, with the music being the best. Otherwise, the players become repetitive and the announcer is just plain annoying to hear. TURN HIM OFF!! The conrol scheme is typical, and movement is the same as most other PC first-person shooter titles out there, which is good. As for characters, the aliens are corny, the robots are too human, and the geneboosted humans you love to hate! The real surprise lies after beating the Single Player mode, and getting Malcolm, Brock, and Lauren. The fun part of the game is just killing and killing sprees! The downside is repetition. Of course, the game doesn't really get old with all the environments and characters to play as. Overall, get the game just for the beautiful graphics and levels. You'll feel like you are really travelling from planet to planet and space station to space station!
Rating: Summary: Unreal Tournament gets an unfair rap from average users... Review: Let me start this review by stating that I'm a fairly finicky gamer. I disliked Half Life: Counter Strike, immensely enjoyed the No One Lives Forever games, and was disappointed by Unreal 2 (though the game had its good merits). As much as I loved the first Unreal Tournament, after spending some quality time with UT2003, I can honestly say that this game is truly... better. Some people disliked the game because it was too demanding of their systems. This is bull. The engine is refined. A GeForce 3 Ti card on a system with no bottlenecks will run this game smoothly with moderate visual settings, but a GeForce 3 coupled with a 1Ghz proc. is expectedly slow. Why? Because as textures are bump mapped, when volumetric fog is thrown about the maps like candy, and when the poly counts are through the bloody roof, the DEVELOPER EXPECTS PEOPLE WITH DECENT SPECS TO PICK UP THE GAME. Don't cry when your ancient rig can't hang with the new big boys. Get a 9800 Pro or something and see what you're truly missing. Although it is easy to be disappointed with UT2003 when you find your favorite sniping rifle or map has been removed or modified, most players will begin to appreciate the near perfect balancing scheme Digital Extremes put into place. There are no overpowering weapons dominating the field. New game modes like the insanely intense Bombing Run replace the game mode stripped from the original. The addition of the double jump imposes players with addictive, arcade-feel action... causing firefights to last for minutes, not moments. Realism isn't the deal here. Fun is. In conclusion, Unreal Tournament 2003 has an insane amount of content right out of the box. The Unreal platform is fast, beautiful, updated, hip, and stable. If you have the paltry fee required to purchase this game, then do so. I think you'll be happy.
Rating: Summary: Very pretty, but uninteresting gameplay Review: The first thing you'll notice is that this game is gorgeous on an adequate system (even a two-year old midrange desktop). Continuing in the UT tradition, the levels are varied, artistic, detailed, and very open, with plenty of options for getting from point A to point B and possibly changing destinations to point C in a hurry when you see three enemies barring your way. The graphics are truly stunning, and the physics engine is amazingly detailed. Unfortunately, you'll probably be seeing a lot of that detail as you crumple amusingly to the ground. Playing against bots or humans, no matter what your skill, you will die frequently. This is not inherently a bad thing, but the reason for it is. UT does have very balanced weapons, as many have noted, but they aren't balanced by strengths and weaknesses so much as they are all nearly equivalent, which when coupled with the frenetic action and crazy pace of the game removes any semblance of strategy, even from modes such as CTF. Because most weapons have similar damage rates, accuracy, and range, and because actual cover is rare, gameplay consists of running wildly around the map, shooting everything that moves with whatever weapon is at hand and hoping to avoid the fate you are trying to inflict on everyone else. This happens also to be why the bots are so fantastically good on high levels - it is not that the AI is particularly smart, as demonstrated by the unvarying tactics it uses, but rather that the AI, being computer-controlled, has perfect reflexes, unfailing aim (not that it cannot be dodged, but it can shoot wherever it intends to even while dodging frantically itself, whereas you are limited to your own ability to follow and react to what you see on the screen), and perfect situational awareness. It is possible to acquire some skill at the game, but this skill is purely in reflexes. That said, if you are looking for a simple frag-fest, a chance to blow up stuff while letting your brain relax, this is a great game for you. But if you want to play a good shooter that also has a modicum of tactical challenge, that lets you exploit your strengths and seek out an enemy's weaknesses, or a game with team play in which coordination, planning and cooperation actually count for something, look elsewhere. If, like so many FPS fans, you enjoyed these features of HALO (or CounterStrike, or Battlefield 1942, or . . .), you will find this game oddly lacking, even if you loved the original UT, as I did. (Although i find that I still like the old UT, albeit somewhat less than when i originally played it.)
Rating: Summary: Best looking game out.. Most uninteresting too Review: The engine is a work of art. Beautiful, unmatched graphics to anything out. But thats where the compliments end.. The game is so alike UT that you feel like you're playing the same game. weapons are mostly 90% the same. But somehow it's worse.. as others have mentioned here there doesnt seem to be as much skill involved. You run around a lot and keep moving and shooting and jumping. Gets old real quick and is pretty mindless. No new toys to try really unless you count the sniper rifle that reveals your position blatently everytime you use it (fires a streak of lightening). The intangible "fun-factor" aspect associated with any game is severely lacking in this one, other then the initial jaw dropping reaction to the beautiful graphics. In an age where other game manufacturers come up with refreshing ideas, this game has none. Kudo's for the developers for generating a top notch engine. I'm sure they'll sell many engine licenses and spawn a lot of UT2k3 based games. IT excells in the engine, so the mod scene and other games based on this engine should do for the engine what this game couldnt. Your money is far better spent on a game like Battlefield 1942, Medal of Honor - Allied Assault, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, or heck play the freeware game America's Army. all of those games are far superior to this one..
Rating: Summary: Same game, just better Review: If you liked the original Unreal Tournament, there is absolutely no reason not to get this one. It has the same fast paced slaughter groove and the same general feel of the original. The graphics are amazing. The beat games like Halo and even match up with games like Halo 2. This game rocks in more ways than one. Though for the most part, it is just a great remake of the original UT, some of the changes made are just superb. There is now excellent rag doll physics and beautifully gorey blood effect. People blow up into many little bloody chunks when you nail them with a rocket launcher. All this being said, there are a few sad changes. The got rid of the sniper (the reason being it was incredibly cheap, but it's still sad). They have gotten rid of assault (there is no exscuse for this). But both of these painful changes are coming back in the UT 2004 edition, so dont worry too much. Another thing, the announcer doesn't suck at all, if you are a fan of UT at all you understand that the voice is Dark comedy and it all adds to the feel of the tournament. OUT OF TEN... SOUND: 8 (it's good... but nothing special) GRAPHICS: 10 (orgasmic) A.I: 9 (they think... but more often they kill) GUNS: 10 (rock ON!!) GAMEPLAY: 10 (thats what its all about man)
Rating: Summary: hi, ut 2004 is out guys. Review: get that instead of this thing.
Rating: Summary: Frustratingly close Review: The original Unreal Tournament is hands down my favorite game of all time. As a result, I was first in line to purchase the follow-up, virtually sight unseen. There are a lot of little changes that bother me, such as the absence of the sniper rifle, the weakening of the rocket launcher, and the awful remaking of classics like "Lava Giant" and "Facing Worlds." But the gameplay is still stellar, the AI unbelievable, and the graphics are a definite improvement. But what kills this game for me is the framerate. That's it. I've got a good machine (1 Ghz PIII, GeForce 3), and am accustomed to reasonable framerates, but UT2003, no matter what I set the resolution at, wouldn't climb over 20. For a game so frought with action, a constant awareness of what's going on is priority one, and frankly, this game fails to live up. Based on the professional reviews I've read, there are similar complaints all around. So, instead, pick up a copy of Unreal Championship for your Xbox (same game, better framerate), or better yet, the original, classic Unreal Tournament. Oh, and bring back the old announcer. The new one [stinks].
Rating: Summary: OK single player, great on line gameplay Review: Think of Unreal Tournament 2003 as a great-graphics weapon fest. As a first person shooter it has an OK single player mission series, but the game really shines in its on line tournament play. Yes, there is a single player mode. You go around shooting things, learning about the weapons and maps. Play with the six races and various classes to learn which best appeals to you and your gameplay style. The character choices are interesting, and the sound draws you into the game. The booming wrestling-match commands give you that tournament feel. On the down side, there is a lot of cursing in the default taunts, so this is yet another reason the game isn't great for younger kids (apart from the obvious violence). The graphics and physics are truly amazing. They've gone an excellent job both with indoor and outdoor maps. Players who are used to the Doom-like graphics of some other games out there will really appreciate the attention to detail put into the development here. The way in which your character moves, and the world through which you are moving, are both very realistic. The weapons represent a good mix of styles. Some might complain that some of the uber-weapons from previous releases are missing - but there's a reason for that, it's called gameplay balance. The weapon set you have available here helps ensure that you have to use some brains and strategy to win, not just raw button-mashing ability. Where the game really shines is multiplayer. This is what it was made for. Once you've spent enough time in single player to learn the controls, races and weapons, be sure to head on line! You can play classics like deathmatch, capture the flag, bombing run (like football) and domination (a control-area setup). Highly recommended for any on line fan of first person shooters!
Rating: Summary: Nothing new... Review: Epic Megagames have really jumped the boat since their heydays, but they were very lucky with Unreal and Unreal Tournament. Both were fantastic and simple games to play which hearld back to the days of DOOM. Now with Unreal Tournament 2003 you get improved graphics and lots of added features from the original game. Strange thing is though, when I started playing the game I thought I was playing the original. The graphics may look prettier but I didn't notice them, neither did I care about the new skins either, this is a shoot it if it moves type of game you don't have time to look at the pretty pictures, you've got to keep moving and that's why this game fails because basically the gameplay is the same as the first game. A huge, but expected, disappointment from this once great game developer. Unreal Tournament 2004 is coming soon and it looks like it's jumping on the GTA bandwagon by adding vechiles for you to control. I'd say wait for that one, but if you can't wait buy the original Unreal Tournament, it's cheaper and it won't need a powerful computer, UT2003 is a joke.
Rating: Summary: Terrible Unreal Game! Review: The original unreal tournament is the very definition of fun. It was interesting, and I could play the demo for hours without becoming bored. The game remained interesting with cool characters, maps, and weapons. Then they released new maps, mods(relics in particular), and assault mode. That game was a success. Unreal Tournament 2003 changes the original into a lame game. There are all new guns, and worst of all... There are uninspired new maps. The new 2-fort is a sand like level that doesn't have the same feeling. The other maps just don't have anything to be talked about. The all new guns I mentioned? Crap. They all blow except the redeemer. The new sniper rifle(lighting gun!) is retarded. The new pistol is pretty stupid. There's also a gun now which instead of doing damage, it pushes the opponent. This is rather useless in pretty much any situation. If you are on the top of a tower it is good, but that is rare. Get the original Unreal Tournament or Unreal Tournament 2004. They both rock, and this game can just be skipped.
